Decisamente banale.

WOLFSBURG, Germany -- Volkswagen AG will assemble a new family-hauling crossover at its plant in Chattanooga and invest $900 million to expand the factory in a push to double U.S. sales of VW-brand vehicles by 2018.

Production is slated to begin in late 2016 at the Chattanooga plant, Volkswagen’s sole U.S. assembly site, where it builds the Passat mid-sized sedan. Volkswagen will invest $900 million in the project and add about 2,000 jobs at the plant, CEO Martin Winterkorn said today in a press conference near the company’s headquarters here.

VW will also open a North American vehicle design and development center in Chattanooga to be staffed by about 200 engineers to better cater its vehicles to the North American market, Winterkorn said.

Winterkorn said the initiatives reflect VW’s long-term commitment to the North American market.

“We are now launching the second phase of the Volkswagen campaign in the U.S.,” he said in a statement. “With the midsize SUV, the expansion of the Chattanooga plant and the new development center, the focus is on the wishes of the U.S. customer.”

In prepared remarks, Winterkorn said, “Our big objective is clear: By 2018, the Volkswagen brand wants to sell about 800,000 vehicles per year in the U.S.”

Last year, VW tallied 407,704 U.S. sales, a 7 percent decline from 2012. This year’s sales are down 13 percent in a U.S. market that continues to expand.

The decision to expand in Chattanooga also shows that the U.S. South remains competitive in the eyes of overseas auto executives despite the ascendancy of Mexico, where luxury marques BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi have all announced plans to start production by 2020.

The new, mid-sized VW crossover is based on the CrossBlue concept vehicle shown at the 2013 Detroit auto show. It was developed specifically for the U.S. market using Volkswagen’s new MQB toolkit.

The seven-seat CUV will fill a gaping hole in VW’s U.S. vehicle lineup, where it is expected to compete against vehicles such as the Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer and Toyota Highlander.

The new crossover is key to VW’s growth plans. The overall U.S. market is expanding on demand for crossovers, pickups and SUVs — where VW’s lineup is thin.

In his remarks, Winterkorn said the new crossover will be “large, attractive and with many high-tech features on board.”

VW Group of America CEO Michael Horn has said that he sees the large crossover becoming one of VW’s four core U.S. models, along with the Jetta compact sedan, the Passat and an Americanized heir to the Tiguan compact CUV.

Even before the CrossBlue’s unveiling in early 2013, the crossover was expected to be built at the Chattanooga plant, which opened in 2011 with an annual capacity of 150,000 vehicles and employs about 2,500 people.

Frank Fischer, who led the Chattanooga plant until March, told Automotive News last year that building an assembly line for the new crossover would increase the plant’s capacity to 250,000 units per year.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and officials from Tennessee’s economic development agency offered about $300 million in incentives for VW to build the plant in the state and hire more employees.

But the decision became tangled in politics around a contentious UAW vote, as Haslam warned workers that voting for union representation would make it harder for the state to attract businesses. Talks between VW and the state were put on hold, but resumed after line workers narrowly rejected UAW representation in February.

The state gave VW a new offer of tax breaks, training and infrastructure improvements also worth about $300 million, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper reported in June, citing unidentified VW sources.

In his remarks, Winterkorn thanked Haslam, Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn), Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke and Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger for their work related to the plant.

The opening of the Chattanooga plant marked VW’s first U.S. production since the closure of a Westmoreland County, Pa., assembly plant in 1988. VW’s only other North American assembly site is a nearly 50-year-old factory in Puebla, Mexico, that builds small cars such as the Jetta, Beetle and Golf.

The UAW, which created a members-only union local in Chattanooga after losing an organizing effort surrounded by controversy in February, welcomed the news.

"The UAW knew that withdrawing its objections to February's tainted election, in consensus with Volkswagen, would expedite the company's decision on the new product line,” Gary Casteel, UAW secretary-treasurer, said in a statement. “The fact that the new line is being announced four days after the rollout of UAW Local 42 in Chattanooga reinforces the consensus that the UAW has reached with the company.”

WOLFSBURG, Germany -- The next crop of Volkswagens coming to the U.S. will bare their teeth and flex their muscles to convey a more aggressive design message aimed at American consumers.

They also will include a new small crossover with a footprint similar to the Golf hatchback, VW executives say, that could arrive in the U.S. in late 2017.

The new design strategy is the result of a more market-focused approach that is forcing Volkswagen to venture beyond the conservative styling that has worked so well for it in Europe and China but failed to inspire much passion for the brand in the U.S., where it has been present for more than 65 years.

Take the new midsize crossover that VW is preparing to build at its Chattanooga factory. At nearly 200 inches long and more than 78 inches wide, it's the largest vehicle VW ever has designed, similar in size and proportion to the Audi Q7, says Klaus Bischoff, chief designer for the VW brand.

The still-unnamed crossover borrows many design elements from the Cross Coupe GTE concept shown at the Detroit auto show, including the notch-tooth grille, creased hood and a sharp-angled character line that runs from the fenders through the beltline. Detail work such as intricate headlights that integrate structural elements that begin from the grille, and metal side vents below the A-pillars, are almost Audi-like in their execution.

"This has to be bold. It has to be a statement," Bischoff said during a tour of Valhalla, as Volkswagen's design studio here is known, for Automotive News and a few other media.

Klaus Bischoff, chief designer, VW brand: "This has to be bold. It has to be a statement."

No photography was allowed inside VW's closely guarded studio, but the sheet metal of each vehicle on display clearly indicated that VW is entering a new phase of more expressive design, a break from the more conservative look of the U.S. Passat and Jetta.

In addition to the new midsize crossover, VW showed final production versions of the redesigned Tiguan compact crossover arriving stateside in 2017 and the freshened Passat due out later this year.

Bischoff says VW needed to step up its design game to stand out in the U.S., where the brand's 2 percent market share pales compared with the double-digit shares it holds in Europe, China and other major markets.

Since Martin Winterkorn took the helm as CEO of Volkswagen AG in 2007, Bischoff says, VW has adopted a more market-specific approach to design, with more consumer clinics and feedback from dealers in overseas markets during the design process.

For example, designers were sent back to the drawing board after feedback from U.S. consumer clinics indicated that the front face of the midsize crossover needed to be more sheared and imposing than the downward-sloping front end on an early iteration of the vehicle, Bischoff said.

"The competition is brutal, and we are not allowed to bring cars into production that do not win clinic testing," Bischoff said. "This car has to be the best."

VW is aiming two more crossovers at the U.S. in coming years: a long-wheelbase version of its redesigned Tiguan, arriving in 2017, and the new small crossover to slot below it. Winterkorn was quoted this month by German newspaper Die Welt as saying that the automaker will follow up the midsize crossover with a smaller SUV that will be "Golf-based."

The smaller offering would share the overall proportions and size of the T-Roc concept shown at the 2014 Geneva show and would compete with new subcompact crossovers such as the Mazda CX-3 and Honda HR-V.

Bischoff acknowledged that U.S. market tastes were a big factor in the small crossover's design. He declined to say when such a vehicle would debut, but asked about its progress, Bischoff said, "It's done."

The redesigned Tiguan on display at Valhalla retains the overall proportions of its predecessor but with updated lines, plus shorter front and longer rear overhangs. Wheel arches are rounded compared with the hard angles seen on the midsize crossover, but some themes are shared, including wraparound taillight designs and grille execution. It grows 2.2 inches in length to 176.7 inches.

The larger Tiguan coming to the U.S., meanwhile, stretches to 184.6 inches long, Bischoff said, creating more cargo room and addressing a shortcoming of the current Tiguan that repelled some U.S. buyers.

The freshened Passat is also a substantial change from the model on sale now, with all-new sheet metal from the A-pillar forward, including a new hood, fenders, grille design and headlights. Taillights are also new.

The major midcycle update reflects VW's recognition that design changes, not just new powertrains or content improvements, fuel demand in the U.S.

The more Euro-centric approach has "been our philosophy for a long time," Bischoff said. That approach, he added, "while successful in Europe, does not seem to be the remedy for the rest of the world."

Volkswagen has started work on a line-up of five new SUVs aimed directly at the US market.

The plans for the SUVs, most of which will end up for sale in global markets, were revealed to Autocar by VW board member and technical chief Heinz-Jakob Neusser at the recent New York show.

Neusser, who is responsible for ‘brand and development’, said VW would build three new mainstream SUVs and at least two “coupé versions” of those same models.

The move comes on the back of another bad year for the VW brand in the US as it tries to make headway in America’s booming new car market. Last year VW sales in the US fell by around 10% to just under 367,000 units, despite the
US market being up by 6%.

The company now believes that it has a future product in the pipeline that will appeal to a US market that is shifting rapidly to crossovers and SUVs.

Neusser said he had travelled to meet US dealers last year, bringing a number of future VW production models with him. It was at that meeting that the dealers laid out their request for as many new SUV models as possible.

Work on the production version of the five-metre-long, seven-seat CrossBlue SUV, which will be built at VW’s new factory in Tennessee, is already under way. A sportier version, previewed by the CrossBlue Coupé, is also in development.

Both cars will be built on the longest version of the new MQB platform, making them around 250mm longer than the new Passat Estate and longer even than the new Skoda Superb. The CrossBlue would, however, be positioned below the next-generation Touareg.

The CrossBlue is expected to appear later next year. There is no news yet on whether it will be offered for sale in Europe, although importing it from the US would be entirely feasible. Both Mercedes-Benz and
BMW build big SUVs at their southern US plants and export them worldwide.

Indeed, Volkswagen has just been granted permission to significantly extend its Chattanooga factory, adding 130,000sq ft as part of a £600 million investment, according to local press reports.

Next in the new VW SUV range will be a replacement for the Tiguan based on the long-wheelbase Golf platform. Neusser said the new car will be long enough to accommodate three rows of seats and is expected to begin production late next year. Unlike the five-seat Tiguan, however, this larger model is unlikely to be sold in Europe.

A more sportily styled version of the new Tiguan is also planned, with both cars set to be exported from VW’s plant in Puebla, Mexico.

The third SUV model line was described by Neusser as the “Polo SUV”, which indicates that it will be part of the new Polo family due in spring next year. This will be a key model for VW in the European market.

While the likely styling of the new baby SUV was previewed by the Taigun concept, there will be two significant differences. Firstly, the Taigun concept was just 3.86m long, because it was based on the Up city car, and secondly it had a three-door body.

The production Taigun will be a five-door model (the three-door Polo body is being dropped on the next-generation model) and around 4.1m long, making it a direct competitor for the successful Nissan Juke.

Other product actions planned to shore up VW in the US will include a major overhaul for the US-market Passat later this year.
