Chrysler Reboots Companywide Product Plans: Goldmine of Info, Lots of Delays, Six Alfas?
January 31, 2013 at 12:35 pm by Justin Berkowitz

Chrysler’s special penchant for soap-op drama is almost enough to forgive its equally fierce passion for product changes and delays. What other company dumps the whole four-year plan on a Powerpoint slide? Hint: Only those looking for an empire’s worth of fortune in investment money. On a conference call yesterday, Chrysler and Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne put the cards on the table for 2012 and for the product plan through 2016. Analysts liked the financial news, but we’re disappointed. Other than Ram and Jeep, virtually every other Chrysler-Fiat brand gets no new product until 2015. Here’s the breakdown, as inspired by our new subscription to Soap Opera Digest:

Chrysler
Old Plan: Compact 100 hatchback in 2012, new 200 and mid-size crossover in 2013.
New Plan: New Chrysler 200 in early 2014. Make Eminem cry. New crossover, 100, and a mystery model in 2015.
Secrets Revealed: 200 will get the nine-speed automatic transmission.
Cliffhangers: Do we really have to wait until 2015 for the 100 hatchback? We’ve seen advanced-stage test cars on the road.

Jeep
Old Plan: Subcompact B-segment crossover, Compass/Patriot replacement, and Liberty replacement all in 2013.
New Plan: Whoa, slow down there, Maestro. Liberty replacement in 2013, ComPatriot replacement in 2014, subcompact crossover in 2015.
Secrets Revealed: Liberty replacement debuts at the New York auto show in April, sales begin in May. It’s the first use of the nine-speed auto.
Cliffhangers: What’s the other new model listed for 2015? We know no more Jeeps get SRT versions, sadly.

Dodge
Old Plan: Subcompact B-segment car and Avenger replacement in 2013, Grand Caravan in 2014.
New Plan: B-segment car is dead, the Avenger isn’t being replaced (though it may vanish), Grand Caravan delayed to 2015.
Secrets Revealed: The suits knew the Dart powertrain lineup was a mess from the beginning, and will be “realigned” later this year. Think 184-hp 2.4-liter engine and six-speed automatic.
Cliffhangers: Is the Dart a surreptitious Avenger replacement? Marchionne describes it as a “D-segment sedan for C-segment price.” Will Dodge or Chrysler (or both) get the new minivan?

Ram
Old Plan: Large and small vans in 2012, possibly a unibody mid-size pickup in 2011.
New Plan: Large Fiat van rebadged as Promaster debuts at Chicago auto show in February, smaller Promaster City van in 2014.
Secrets Revealed: Marchionne expects Ram to join Jeep as the primary driver of the group’s growth in the U.S. for the next year or more.
Cliffhangers: Are they really giving up on the Durango-platformed mid-size pickup?

SRT
Old Plan: Don’t break SRT into a separate brand.
New Plan: Break SRT into a separate brand. Order new stationary. Throw parade celebrating success. Refreshes in 2014 and 2015, rear-drive Barracuda in 2016.
Secrets Revealed: Viper may get a light refresh in 2014 or 2015.
Cliffhangers: How is SRT expected to be a standalone brand if it has only one unique model for the next three years?

Fiat
Old Plan: Sell more 500s than Mini can sell hatchbacks.
New Plan: Say Mini has never been the target. 500L in 2013, 500X crossover and five new models in 2015, another one the next year.
Secrets Revealed: Fiat counts variants like the the 500 and 500C as separate models, so the “five new models” thing is misleading.
Cliffhangers: Seriously though, six new models or variants? Fiat said in December that it wants every future model to be a 500 or Panda spinoff. And we ain’t getting the Panda.

Instrumented Test: 2013 Ram 1500 SLT V6 8-Speed Automatic
Photos and Info: 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee: New Looks, New Trim, New Diesel
Instrumented Test: 2013 Fiat 500 Turbo
Alfa Romeo
Old Plan: Relaunch in U.S. in 2012 2013 with 4C, SUV, other models soon after.
New Plan: Begin work on future delay announcements. 4C sports car in 2013. Four models in 2015, one more in 2016.
Secrets Revealed: “Relaunch Alfa in the U.S.” really meant “Offer one low-volume Alfa in the U.S.,” which already happened with the 8C.
Cliffhangers: Will this plan for Alfa’s return be any different than the others? Will the models it’s planning to bring ever come to exist anywhere? Their development has been delayed for eons. Will VW finally offer the right price to buy Alfa from Fiat?

Da CAR and driver.

Automotive News
July 24, 2013 - 2:52 pm ET -- UPDATED: 7/24/13 3:50 pm ET - adds detail
DETROIT -- In a sweeping change from the product plan Chrysler Group outlined this year, the lives of the Dodge Avenger, Dodge Grand Caravan and Jeep Wrangler have been extended, The Detroit News reported today.

The newspaper, citing supplier sources, said the current Avenger would continue through 2015, a year longer than planned; the Grand Caravan through 2017, an extension of 2 years; and the current Wrangler through 2018.

Chrysler spokesman Gualberto Ranieri declined to comment on the report.

If true, the product extensions might signal that the automaker and its corporate parent, Fiat S.p.A., are trying to conserve cash in the face of economic pressure in Europe and a planned purchase by Fiat of remaining Chrysler shares.

The mid-sized Avenger sedan had been expected to end late this year or in the first quarter of 2014 as Chrysler's Sterling Heights assembly plant in suburban Detroit geared up to produce the next generation Chrysler 200 sedan.

CEO Sergio Marchionne said this year that the next Chrysler 200 -- which shares a platform with the Dodge Dart and Jeep Cherokee -- would be shown in January 2014. The Sterling Heights plant, with two body shops, will have the capability to produce the redesigned Chrysler 200 and the older Avenger.

Since taking operational control of Chrysler in 2009, Marchionne has sought to end the Daimler-era practice of producing similar vehicles to compete against one another in Chrysler showrooms. He has said the automaker should have one minivan going forward, for example, and not the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan.

Chrysler purchasing head Scott Kunselman told Automotive News this week that the automaker has begun bid preparation for its next minivan program.

Which of the minivan nameplates will survive has been the subject of more than a year of speculation, but no definitive answer -- even from the top executives of each brand.

The hot-selling Jeep Wrangler was to be refreshed in 2016, which would provide time for the Toledo plant where it is made to expand its constrained capacity.

Jeep brand head Mike Manley said last month that a new optional diesel engine would be available with the next refresh of the Wrangler, and said earlier that a long-sought pickup version would wait until additional production capacity could be found.

Automotive News
October 31, 2013 - 6:45 am ET -- UPDATED: 10/31/13 10:30 am ET - adds detail
TURIN -- Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has promised his fourth revival strategy in nine years for the struggling Alfa Romeo brand.

"We continue to work in a pretty determined fashion in trying to reshape the Alfa Romeo platform and I think we will be in a position to outline more at the end of the first quarter of 2014," Marchionne said.

Alfa's often-delayed return to the U.S. retail market is key to hitting Marchionne's volume projections for the premium brand. The Alfa 4C sports coupe was expected to be on sale in the U.S. by the end of this year, but has been delayed until at least next summer.

Questions also remain over whether the 4C -- and by extension other Alfa imports to follow -- will be retailed through the small Maserati dealership network affiliated with Fiat, or through the Fiat brand network affiliated with Chrysler. Maserati has fewer than 70 dealers in the United States, while the Fiat brand, under Chrysler, has about 210 dealerships.

Alfa's future is a key part of Marchionne's effort to turn around Fiat Group, which on Wednesday lowered its profit target for 2013 because of persistent losses in Europe and slumping sales in Brazil.

Marchionne, during a conference call with analysts Wednesday, said he would reveal a new five-year strategy for Fiat Group and Chrysler next year -- most likely in late April in conjunction with the companies' first-quarter earnings report.

The CEO's comments came after Fiat said its full-year trading profit, or earnings before interest, taxes and one-time gains or costs, will miss an earlier forecast by as much as 13 percent. Fiat forecast full-year trading profit in a range of 3.5 billion euros to 3.8 billion euros. That's below the company's previous range of 4 billion euros to 4.5 billion euros. Third-quarter earnings fell 9 percent to 816 million euros ($1.12 billion).

New underpinnings

For Alfa, the plan focuses on a new rear- and all-wheel-drive architecture that is being developed by a small team of engineers who report directly to Harald Wester, Fiat-Chrysler's chief technical officer as well as CEO at Alfa and Maserati.

Sources say the engineers, who are based at Maserati's headquarters in Modena, Italy, aim to make the architecture flexible enough to be used by the Chrysler and Dodge brands.

Alfa needs the architecture to compete better with German rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz, which offer rwd and awd cars favored by many driving enthusiasts.

With a global volume of about 102,000 units last year, Alfa sold less than one-tenth as many cars as BMW and Mercedes. The key reasons are: Alfa is product starved – its only models are the MiTo subcompact, Giulietta compact and the low-volume 4C coupe – and it is selling almost exclusively in slumping Europe.

To help reverse this trend, the new architecture is expected to underpin at least four new Alfa models: the Giulia mid-sized sedan and wagon, a large flagship sedan and a mid-sized SUV. The first of these vehicles is due to debut in Europe in late 2015 or early 2016. All Alfa models built on this new architecture also will be sold in the United States, expanding the automaker's oft-delayed bid to gain a foothold in the world's second-largest market.

One source said the architecture could also underpin the replacements for the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger large sedans, as well as the future Dodge Challenger coupe.

In the first nine months, Alfa European sales decreased by 30 percent to almost 51,000 units, according to data from industry association ACEA.

Marchionne's original plan for Alfa, revealed in April 2010, called for annual sales of 500,000 units by 2014. Due to several delays in new product launches, Alfa's global target was lowered to 400,000 units in September 2011. In October 2012 the goal was reduced to more than 300,000. The next revision comes next spring.

Alfa said the plan is "top secret" and refused to comment.

Alfa Romeo Leans on Ferrari Horsepower in Brand Overhaul

Fiat SpA (F) is turning to the cachet and horsepower of Ferrari as part of its latest effort to transform struggling Alfa Romeo into a profit machine.

Fiat plans to develop a new line of rear-wheel-drive sedans and sport-utility vehicles to bolster Alfa Romeo and take on the likes of Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, people familiar with the matter said. The models will start to hit the market in 2016, and high-end versions will be equipped with motors developed by Ferrari, the Fiat-owned supercar maker, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private.

Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne’s sought-after turnaround of Alfa Romeo has been going nowhere. Since the executive took the reins at Fiat in 2004, Alfa Romeo’s annual deliveries tumbled 56 percent to 74,000 cars. In 2012, he scaled back a sales target for the Italian nameplate by 40 percent as promised models were delayed by a spending halt in Europe. With auto demand in the region recovering and Fiat armed with more resources thanks to the takeover of Chrysler, it may be now or never for the sporty brand.

“This is the last chance for Alfa Romeo,” said Giuseppe Berta, a professor at Bocconi University and the former head of Fiat’s archives. “Marchionne’s bet is a long shot. To beat the German premium brands, he needs to make Alfa unique. His best chance is Ferrari engines and Italian design.”

Ditching MiTo

Fiat is considering ditching the current versions of Alfa Romeo’s MiTo and Giulietta hatchbacks, which accounted for 99 percent of sales last year, under the plan, which is still being finalized, the people said. The relaunch of the Italian brand, which became a cultural icon with the 1960s film “The Graduate,” will be boosted by selling cars through Jeep’s international dealer network, widening Alfa’s reach, they said. Fiat declined to comment on Alfa Romeo’s past performance and future development plans.

The Italian manufacturer will unveil its plans for Alfa Romeo in May as part of a Detroit presentation of the strategy for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, the company being formed by the combination of the Italian carmaker and Jeep’s parent.

The revival of Alfa Romeo is key to Marchionne’s plans for the merged carmaker. With allure stemming from classics like the iconic Duetto spider of the 1960s, Alfa has the potential to help drive profit for the group, in the same way that Audi does at Volkswagen AG, by commanding higher prices than mass-market models bearing the Chrysler, Dodge or Fiat badges. The association with Ferrari could add an extra boost.

Six Alfas

“We want to exploit Ferrari’s know-how for Alfa Romeo engines,” Marchionne said at the Detroit auto show in January. “It would be foolish not to.”

Audi, the BMW brand and Mercedes-Benz, which have benefited from a rebound in the U.S. and growing demand in China, have all posted global sales records in recent years, bolstering their parent companies’ earnings with higher profit.

The target is to roll out at least six new Alfas in the next five years, including two SUVs, to boost sales more than fourfold to 300,000 cars over that time frame, the people said. The underpinnings of the cars will also be used in Chrysler vehicles to spread development costs, they said.

Alfa’s relaunch has to some degree already started with the 4C sports car, which went on sale last year in Europe and will make its U.S. debut at the New York auto show next month. The first model in the new push will be a mid-sized sedan that may be called Giulia, reviving a model name from the 1960s.

Jeep Showrooms

“This is long overdue,” said Roberto Ferrari, head of the Alfa Romeo dealer association in Italy. “We’ve been waiting for years for a clear and definitive strategy for the brand and a full lineup of products.”

To broaden its reach, Fiat plans to sell Alfa Romeo models through Jeep’s 1,700 dealers outside North America, giving it a distribution network that better competes with BMW’s 3,200 sales outlets worldwide, the people said. Last year, 90 percent of Alfas were sold in Europe, where it has almost 1,200 of its 1,400 dealerships globally.

The move is based on the idea that both brands appeal to consumers seeking alternatives to mainstream competitors and can co-exist because there’s little potential that Jeep SUVs and performance-oriented Alfa Romeo cars cannibalize each other.

“The strategy to mix SUVs and sporty sedans in the same showroom makes sense,” said Ian Fletcher, an analyst with market researcher IHS Automotive in London. “But success can’t be taken for granted.”

Unused Capacity

The new models and the linkup with Jeep and Ferrari may not be quite enough. IHS forecasts Alfa Romeo sales peaking in 2017 at 243,000 cars, 19 percent below Marchionne’s goal. Still, that would be triple last year’s sales and the highest deliveries in more than 10 years.

The growth would help fill unused capacity at Fiat’s Italian factories, a primary source of the manufacturer’s losses in Europe of 520 million euros last year. Marchionne expects Alfa Romeo to anchor his strategy to build upscale cars in Italy for export worldwide to return to profit in the region.

The new Giulia will be assembled at Fiat’s Cassino factory near Rome, said the people. The engines, versions of the V6 motors Ferrari developed for Fiat’s exclusive Maserati brand and adapted by Fiat engineers, will likely be produced at sites in Pratola Serra or Termoli in southern Italy, said the people.

“Alfa Romeos have to be produced in Italy with an Italian powertrain,” Marchionne said this month at the Geneva motor show, where the brand debuted the spider version of the 4C. “Some things belong to a place, and Alfa belongs to Italy.”
