Volkswagen to Renew India Push With Tata Alliance Talks
Christoph Rauwald and P R Sanjai
22 febbraio 2017, 16:04 CET
22 febbraio 2017, 22:00 CET
New cooperation follows VW’s failed tie-up with Suzuki
Tata trying to shed budget-car image in Indian home market
Volkswagen AG is in advanced talks to team up with Tata Motors Ltd. as the German automaker takes another stab at India’s fast-growing demand for cars, according to people familiar with the matter.

A deal to jointly develop vehicles for emerging markets may be announced at the Geneva auto show in early March, said the people, who asked not to be identified as the plan isn’t public. There’s no guarantee an agreement will be struck, they said.

Volkswagen is exploring -- with its brands and “potential partners” -- ways to “enlarge the product portfolio with tailor-made solutions” in India, VW said in an e-mailed statement. It’s “premature to make any further disclosures at the moment.”

Tata Motors has nothing to announce but “as prevalent in the automotive industry, we regularly have discussions with different companies to explore future collaborations,” a spokesman said by e-mail.

Competition for India’s booming market of middle-class drivers is intensifying, with global manufacturers from Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV to Peugeot maker PSA Group expanding in the country. VW has been struggling for years to develop low-cost vehicles for emerging economies as its own technology proved too expensive. An alliance would give Tata Motors access to VW’s expertise, and sharing development will help both companies cut costs.
VW’s previous attempt to tackle emerging markets, through a small-cars partnership with Suzuki Motor Corp., ended with a fierce dispute two years ago.

Tata Motors, India’s fourth-biggest carmaker by volume, has been stepping up efforts to shed the budget image of its namesake brand. The company’s been losing money in its home market and relies on the Jaguar and Land Rover luxury brands to provide most of its revenue.

Tata’s local deliveries climbed 13 percent to 141,454 units between April and January. Volkswagen’s sales jumped 18 percent to 41,285 vehicles, ranking it ninth. Industrywide demand rose 9.2 percent to 2.5 million autos in the period.

India, with the world’s second-biggest population, is an attractive market for carmakers due its comparatively low level of vehicle ownership. There were 32 passenger autos per 1,000 drivers in 2015, compared with 102 in China and 765 in North America, according to an EY report.

Shares of Tata Motors rose 0.3 percent to 460 rupees in Mumbai on Wednesday. They have declined 2.5 percent this year, compared with the 8.4 percent gain on the benchmark S&P BSE Sensex Index.

Perchè non usano il know how interno?

Memorandum of understanding: Volkswagen Group and Tata Motors Ltd. to explore strategic alliance for joint development projects

• Long-term partnership on Indian sub-continent envisaged
• Goal: joint development projects to expand product portfolio
• ŠKODA to lead project for Volkswagen Group brands
• Project delivers on core initiative of "TOGETHER – Strategy 2025"

Matthias Müller, CEO of Volkswagen AG, Bernhard Maier, CEO of ŠKODA Auto and Günther Butschek, CEO und Managing Director of Tata Motors Ltd., have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which forms the basis for exploring long-term strategic cooperation in clearly-defined fields. The goal of the strategic alliance is to bundle the expertise of both car manufacturers with a view to jointly developing vehicle components and possibly also vehicle concepts.

For the Volkswagen Group, the signing of the MoU with Tata Motors Ltd. marks a further trailblazing step in the context of "TOGETHER – Strategy 2025". Under the terms of the memorandum, the Volkswagen Group and Tata Motors will explore possibilities for a strategic partnership in India.

In order to share responsibility among the Volkswagen Group brands, ŠKODA Auto is to lead the project. The first step will address topics such as the application of specific market knowledge as well as local development expertise. In the long term, the Volkswagen Group is looking to further expand its product portfolio in the fast-growing emerging markets.

"Our aim with the envisaged strategic partnership with Tata Motors is to lay the foundations in the Group and the brands that will enable us to offer customer-oriented mobility solutions in the emerging, fast-growing automobile markets, as elsewhere. By offering the appropriate products we intend to achieve sustainable and profitable growth in very different parts of the world. That is why we are systematically pursuing our regional growth strategy", Matthias Müller, CEO of Volkswagen AG, commented.

"We are delighted to announce our potential cooperation with Volkswagen Group and ŠKODA. We strongly believe that both the companies, by working together, can leverage from each other's strengths to create synergies and develop smart innovative solutions for the Indian and overseas market. This is in alignment with Tata Motors efforts to make itself ‘FutuReady' by embracing new technologies, fostering higher platform efficiency and offering solutions that connect with the aspirations of our customers", Günter Butschek, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Motors Ltd., commented.

"We are looking forward to the joint project with Tata Motors. Delegating project responsibility to ŠKODA underscores the great confidence of the Volkswagen Group in the ability of our brand. Together with Tata we will be specifying the concrete opportunities for collaboration over the coming months", Bernhard Maier, CEO of ŠKODA Auto, stated.

The contractual framework and the guidelines for a strategic cooperation between the Volkswagen Group and Tata Motors Ltd. will be examined and defined in detail over the coming months. Until then, the parties have agreed not to disclose any information.

Asked about budget car plans, Diess confirmed that VW was leaving development of an affordable car for the Indian market to Skoda, which is heading up a cooperation with local manufacturer Tata Motors, in order to focus on China.

"We are making progress with our own budget car plans in China, and we're in the process of choosing the vehicles' design. Here we are working together with our joint venture partner in the North (FAW), where the team is developing three projects in total - a sedan and two SUVs for a segment, which continues to grow," Diess said.

"We see a positive trend for us, since the price positioning of the local manufacturers is on the rise, which accommodates us. So, with the right brand, the right marketing campaign and the right retail structure, we definitely think we can participate in the growth starting 2019 and 2020," Diess said.

BERLIN -- Volkswagen Group's Skoda division said talks with India's Tata Motors on a strategic alliance have ended because the two automakers failed to achieve planned cost savings.

"The two companies have come to the conclusion that at the present point of time the technical and economic synergies cannot be realized in the desired way," Skoda said on Thursday.

But Skoda did not rule out the possibility for future cooperation with Tata after the "intensive and constructive talks" in past months.

The collapse of the talks is a further blow to VW's efforts to develop a cheap platform for Asian markets, after an earlier alliance with Suzuki also fell apart.

In March, VW and Tata Motors signed a memorandum of understanding for a long-term partnership to explore joint development of products for customers in India and other markets.

VW commissioned Skoda to lead the talks and explore a possible entry-level car platform using Tata's AMP vehicle platform.

Skoda dropped the idea of developing the AMP platform because of fears that it would need significant further investment to meet future crash-test and emissions requirements, said a VW Group source, who declined to be named.

VW and Skoda have decided to explore VW's MQB platform for possible further synergies, the source said.

The talks with Tata Motors ended amicably, the source said.

Devono tenere sotto controllo i costi.

FRANKFURT -- Volkswagen Group's Czech brand, Skoda, will aim to produce a low-cost car for emerging markets by 2020, despite the collapse of cooperation talks with India's Tata Motors, said Thomas Sedran, the group's head of strategy.

Skoda has developed "a series of ideas" for a cheap car for India that could then be used in other markets such as Brazil and Iran, Sedran said.

Skoda and Tata said earlier this month that talks on a strategic alliance had ended because the two automakers failed to achieve planned cost savings.

In March, the carmakers had signed a memorandum of understanding for a long-term partnership to explore joint development of products for customers in India and other markets.

Talks came to an end after Skoda dropped the idea of developing a car using Tata's AMP platform because of fears that it would need significant further investment to meet future crash-test and emissions requirements, a VW Group source said at the time.

Skoda Auto has confirmed that it will take the lead in developing a low-cost ‘Eco’ platform for the VW Group to serve cost-sensitive markets like India.

The first models to be built on the Eco platform are due in 2020, with the initial one likely to be a five-seat, mid-size SUV to rival the Creta. Both VW and Skoda will individually develop their own SUVs but will share the powertrain and other mechanicals.

With VW’s EA189 1.5-litre diesel due to be phased out before 2020, VW will need a diesel engine which is critical for the success of any SUV. It’s likely that a pared-down version of VW’s EA288 2.0-litre diesel will be used, while it’s also possible that VW could outsource a compact diesel from another manufacturer altogether.

The next model is likely to be a mid-size sedan that could replace the VW Vento and Skoda Rapid, which are due for a model change in 2021. Moving further down the pyramid, Skoda will finally get into the hatchback segment it had vacated since it discontinued the Fabia in 2013. However, this won’t happen till 2022 by which time VW will finally replace the Polo in India as well, but not before skipping the current generation (in Europe) altogether.

Hence, in the first phase of the product plan, VW and Skoda are expected to get three all-new models each. An SUV, a mid-size sedan and a premium hatchback.

Skoda is tight-lipped about volume projections but suppliers say they have been asked to quote for a production run between 1,80,000 and 4,00,000 units, a large chunk of which will go for exports.

INTERVIEW WITH Bernhard Maier, Chief Executive Officer, Skoda Auto

On the alliance with Tata Motors, re-engineering the MQB platform for India and the potential of the Indian market.

Bernhard Maier

Why did the MoU for an alliance with Tata fall through?
We had good and constructive discussion with Tata Motors. Both parties concluded that the desired economic synergies could not be achieved. We at Skoda are now developing a new strategy based on the Volkswagen Group’s successful MQB A0 platform and are very confident about this approach for the Indian market. However, the possibility of future cooperation with Tata is not ruled out.

In the next five years, where do you see Skoda in India?
We have ambitious plans for Skoda in India and aim to strengthen our presence across segments. We just started in our Strategy 2025, the biggest product campaign ever in the history of Skoda, and we are strongly focusing on the SUV segment. These segments are by far the fastest growing segments in the entire world and this is true for India as well. So we are starting with the Kodiaq now and are looking forward to come up with some interesting new products in the years to come. We will also evaluate the Karoq for the Indian market.

India is one of the most promising economies with a dynamically evolving automotive industry, and this market will play an important role in Skoda’s global growth strategy. As part of our new strategy for the market, we are planning to re-enter to volume segments. Our goal is a market share of 5 percent in the Indian market after 2025.

How do you plan to reduce costs of the MQB platform for India?
One of the aspects we have to look at intensively is finding out how to lower the cost of technical development. In this regard, we are looking at establishing a local engineering centre in India. Additionally, we need to develop a solid supplier base in India, which will provide us with a cost advantage without compromising on quality. We will also have to tackle the issue of competitive material costs.

When can we expect the first models based on a localised MQB A0 platform for the Indian market and when can we see the first products?
The launch of the first products based on this strategy will coincide with the changing regulations in 2020 (shift to BS-VI). We are evaluating various volume segments and the compact SUV and hatchback segments look to be particularly exciting.

Will you be developing products for the VW Group and Volkswagen brand in India as well?
Our strategy is, of course, closely linked to the development of the VW Group in India. Therefore, we will also be considering sharing the platform with VW. However, each brand and product will have its own identity.

Will you be looking at exports from India?
First of all we need a stable footprint in India itself, but in the future we want to produce cars not just for the local market but also to export. Currently, we have our footprint in 102 international markets and we are planning to be in 120 markets by the end of the year 2025. So there are some markets that are good for cars produced in India.

Is the low cost structure of the Indian market a bit challenging?
When you talk about India, we are not only talking about the third biggest market in the world, we are also talking about the most competitive one when it comes to cost-sensitive products. This is a challenge which we are happy to take to see how competitive we can be.
