The classic Volkswagen Camper van could be revived as a battery-electric vehicle, according to company board member Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser.

Speaking at the New York show, Neusser revealed that VW engineers and designers were working on a new Camper van concept using a small electric motor driving the front wheels and battery packs stored under the floor.

Neusser told Autocar that the design of the original VW van was "so iconic" that any attempt at a new model would have to have three "very important" design cues: "First the wide, solid, D-Pillar, second the boxy design of the centre section and, thirdly, the front end must have a very short overhang. The distance from the A-pillar to the front end must be very short."

The key to achieving the unique front-end design is the fact that an electric motor would allow a much lower "bonnet line" than a conventional petrol engine. This, in turn, would allow the A-pillars to be placed much further forward than in a conventional MPV.

Such a car, he said, with an attractive cost base could make it into production. Work on the concept was currently ongoing at VW, Neusser confirmed.

Vorrei ricordare che questo progetto e' colpito da una sfiga pazzesca in Vw, nel 2004 fu cancellato quando ormai era pronto alla produzione e la versione del 2011 su pianale Mqb pure non raggiunse gli obbiettivi di redditività per essere prodotta.

Volkswagen is planning to reveal an updated version of its Microbus camper van concept at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next January prior to an official announcement by its chairman, Martin Winterkorn, confirming the iconic van’s return to the German car maker’s line-up.

Described as a close preview to a planned production version of the Microbus to be produced at Volkswagen’s Puebla factory in Mexico from 2017, the updated concept is set to showcase a newly developed electric drive system among other contemporary connectivity technologies.

The zero local emission driveline, which relies on the Volkswagen Group’s latest lithium-ion battery technology as used by the Audi R8 E-Tron and upcoming Audi E-Tron Quattro concept, is claimed to provide a range of between 400 and 500km (250-310 miles) depending on the driving conditions. It is planned to be offered alongside more conventional turbocharged four-cylinder petrol and diesel powerplants on the production Microbus, which senior Wolfsburg sources describe as being smaller than the latest Multivan.

Volkswagen’s plans to resurrect the Microbus form part of a broader commercial vehicle strategy aimed at significantly bolstering its sales performance in the US market. Other proposed new models under consideration include a range of pick up trucks boasting varying cabin combinations as a rival to the likes of the Ford Ranger.

Secondo autocar Vw avrebbe approvato il microbus ( non solo in versione elettrica) per il 2018.

Secondo automobilwoche Vw presenterà il concept del prossimo Bulli a Ginevra invece che a Las Vegas come programmato, il pianale sarà il MEB cioè una variante dell' MQB pensato per veicoli elettrici, produzione a partire dal 2019 in Messico.

La concept sarà presentata al CES di Las Vegas a gennaio.

Volkswagen shifted its focus from diesel to hybrid and electric powertrains in the wake of the widely publicized Dieselgate scandal. The Wolfsburg-based car maker is developing a modular platform for battery-powered cars, and German media outlets are reporting it’s also in the early stages of designing a plug-in hybrid hatchback aimed squarely at the Toyota Prius and the Hyundai Ioniq.

The model is tentatively called XL3, a name that draws a parallel to the futuristic, ultra-efficient XL1 (pictured) sold in strictly limited numbers in Europe. While the XL1 takes the form of a sleek coupe with room for up to two passengers, the XL3 will launch as a compact four-door hatchback with an aerodynamic silhouette similar to the Prius’ and space for at least four passengers. Its front end will be characterized by C-shaped LED daytime running lights, a styling cue borrowed from the XL1, and blue trim elements.

Power will come from a gasoline-electric plug-in hybrid drivetrain made up of a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder TSI engine rated at 140 horsepower, and a 35-horsepower electric motor connected to a battery pack. With both power sources running, the XL3 will return approximately 80 mpg in a mixed European cycle. With the turbo four shut off, the hatchback will be capable of driving on electricity alone for relatively short distances.

Volkswagen has confirmed plans to build more green cars, but it hasn’t commented on rumors of a Prius-fighting model. German magazine Auto Bild believes the hatchback will be presented to the public at a major auto show in 2018, so we could see it appear on our roads in time for the 2019 model year — over two decades after the original Prius was introduced in Japan. In Germany, it will cost about €30,000 (roughly $33,000) before government incentives are factored in.

The VW Group can leapfrog its rivals in electric car technology if it achieves scale across all of its brands effectively, according to the firm’s technical development boss, Frank Welsch.

Volkswagen boss Matthias Müller revealed at the Geneva motor show that the firm would launch an electric family car with a range of 500km (310 miles) and a recharge time of 15 minutes for a price lower than that of an equivalent Golf. Insiders had previously told Autocar that the VW Group’s highest management sees the potential for it to be the first iconic electric car and the perfect vehicle to banish memories of the Dieselgate emissions scandal.

“The MEB platform toolkit gives us the perfect opportunity to gain scale by using the platform solution in as many ways as possible,” said Welsch. “If we can achieve scale then all sorts of things will become open to us, from reduced costs to faster R&D.”

Welsch also revealed that a heavily revamped VW e-Golf will go on sale at the end of this year or early next year, with a claimed electric range of 186 miles, up from the current model’s 118 miles. “Cell technology is moving forward quickly,” he said, “and will move even faster in future.”
