Spy shots of new smaller Jaguar SUV show look of baby F-Pace, expected to go on sale by the end of 2018

Here’s the proof that Jaguar has taken development of its baby SUV to the next stage – by running a shortened version of its F-Pace as a test mule on UK roads.

In February this year, our spy photographers caught what looked like a modified Range Rover Evoque testing on roads near Jaguar Land Rover HQ in Gaydon, Warks. However, a DVLA plate check revealed the model in question was in fact registered as a Jaguar, not a Land Rover.

The car seen here is a later development mule of the new sub-F-Pace model, now with a more appropriate Jaguar bodyshell. It’s expected to go on sale within the next two years, priced from around £28,000. It was also previously thought to be called Jaguar E-Pace, although that name is now unlikely to be used.

Due to design constraints, Jaguar is not able to use a shortened version of the F-Pace’s chassis for the smaller car. Instead, the new model is expected to be based on the smaller (and older) Evoque. This is the same LR-MS chassis found on the Land Rover Discovery Sport, which isn’t due for replacement until 2022 at the earliest – proving there’s plenty of life in the platform.

Jaguar’s chief designer Ian Callum suggested earlier this year that any smaller model would need to move to a transverse-engined layout. “We’ve done front-wheel-drive studies, because everybody knows that if you go smaller than XE or F-Pace, you’ve no choice but to go that way,” he said.

“The only way you’re going to get the look on the car is to turn the engine sideways. It is challenging, and we’ve clearly looked at how we could do it. You get that long snout otherwise, which looks out of proportion.”

As such, entry-level editions of the small car could be front-wheel drive – the first Jag to use that layout since the X-Type. Four-wheel drive will be offered on the bulk of the range, though, including the more powerful variants.

This latest mule has been registered as a diesel-electric, hinting that JLR is working on alternative powertrains to help the LR-MS chassis through the next decade. Petrol or diesel-based hybrid tech would see CO2 drop below 100g/km, and could allow fuel economy of more than 70mpg. As with the Evoque, the baby Jag is unlikely to benefit from more powerful six-cylinder engines, focusing on refined four-cylinder units.

As the XF followed in the footsteps of the XE, we anticipate Jag’s smaller SUV to take design cues from the F-Pace. The flat nose – also evident on the Evoque mule – will remain, but with shorter overhangs (the alteration to the rear is particularly evident on this mule).

This is likely to ensure a smaller cabin and reduced boot space, although the car should be more than a match for rivals like the BMW X1 and forthcoming Mercedes GLB. It will be more practical than an Evoque, too, as its wheelbase should be slightly longer.

We’d expect official information to be revealed next year, ahead of showroom-ready models arriving in 2018.

Jaguar is testing an all-electric compact SUV for a predicted launch in 2019 – if this latest test mule and its chassis codename are any indication.

These new pictures show what appears to be a shortened F-Pace exterior and a quick search of DVLA records reveals the car is listed as 'Jaguar X590', which is the codename given to the car maker's yet-to-be-revealed all-electric platform.

Reports so far have suggested this codename would be reserved for Jaguar's first EV model, a four-door coupé to rival the Tesla Model S and Porsche Mission E. But its use on an SUV suggests the electric technology is also being tested for a future (and heavily rumoured) Model X rival.

Despite its similar dimensions, the electric SUV isn't expected to be an adapted version of Jaguar's future E-Pace SUV, which is due in 2017 and based on the new steel Land Rover Discovery Sport platform. Instead, the electric SUV will most likely sit on the same aluminium architecture as the XE and F-Pace because, unlike the E-Pace's underpinnings, the platform was designed with an all-electric powertrain in mind, as well as various hybrid and plug-in hybrid applications.

Jaguar has refrained from commenting, but given that an all-electric model is almost certainly expected in the coming years, it would make sense if today's mule were a test car for that.

Sources suggest the electric SUV will feature four inboard electric motors mounted on each corner, retaining the use of driveshafts, although there remains the possibility of Jaguar making a technology leap with in-wheel motors.

Jaguar Land Rover parent firm Tata has previously pioneered the technology and insiders say the company has made significant progress in overcoming the problem of the additional unsprung weight of in-wheel motors.

If predictions for this electric model are correct, Jaguar could offer three SUVs before the end of the decade – the F-Pace, the E-Pace and the electric SUV – with a fourth, the J-Pace, likely to join them in 2020.

Jaguar has been given the green light to launch a compact all-electric SUV by 2018, putting it ahead of its Range Rover sister brand in the race to get a battery-powered vehicle into showrooms.

The electric Jaguar is due to be revealed by the end of this year. There’s no word yet on what the vehicle will be called, but E-Pace, a name that Jaguar has trademarked, is a distinct possibility.

Autocar understands the electric SUV will be based on the Jaguar Land Rover EV platform unveiled a year ago at a low-carbon vehicle event in Bedfordshire. Although the project was called the Evoque_e, Autocar understands Jaguar is now leading the project, and the styling of the new EV has recently been signed off.

The E-Pace is believed to be slightly smaller than the F-Pace, with a lower roofline and even more dramatic styling.

Jaguar Racing is launching a factory Formula E effort - read more here

It’s also thought that the emphasis with the E-Pace project will be on showing how electric drive can deliver vivid performance and handling, as well as exceptional refinement. The new Jaguar will be an example of how battery power can underpin a serious performance car.

Allowing Jaguar to launch JLR’s first EV will help the brand to shake off its remaining ‘old world’ image and will link into its upcoming Formula E race series entry.

The E-Pace is packaged to ensure that it’s classified as an SUV under US market legislation. This is important, because JLR needs to sell EVs in some numbers over the next decade in the important Californian market in addition to internal combustion models.

With the brand emphasising performance and handling prowess, the new electric Jaguar is set to get all-wheel drive. Although this new platform uses aluminium construction, it has little in common with the structures used to underpin JLR’s current generation of aluminium cars.

The front and rear crash structures, suspension mounting points and sills are all made of aluminium. However, much of the strength of the structure comes from the battery pack, which forms the backbone of the structure and takes up the whole floor area. Autocar understands this structure is easy to scale and a slightly wider and longer version of it will underpin the planned Range Rover EV.

We got a behind-the-scenes look at Jaguar's Formula E operations - get the full story here

In the prototype, JLR said the lithium ion battery pack was rated at 70kWh, but that’s likely to be slightly bigger in the production car for an maximum range of 280 to 300 miles in ideal conditions.

The motors in the JLR EV platform have been designed by the company itself. Dubbed Electric Axle Drive (EAD), they are designed to be cheaper to make and longer-lasting than existing ones. The JLR design doesn’t use rare earth magnets and has aluminium winding instead of the more common, and more expensive, copper.

A senior JLR engineering source said the material cost of the motors is around 60% lower than more conventional designs and should have a “30% longer life”.

The front motor develops 114bhp and drives the front wheels through a single-speed transmission. The rear motor is good for 195bhp and drives through a two-speed ZF gearbox, adapted from the unit used by the BMW i8, Autocar understands. Combined output is around 308bhp, but torque hasn’t yet been revealed.

The E-Pace has been spied testing, get your first glimpse at the car here

Twin motors should permit very dynamic tuning of this platform, offering torque vectoring for stability control and to help the car turn in to corners. It will also be possible to switch between front, rear and all-wheel drive almost instantaneously.

Autocar understands the future Range Rover EV will be bigger than the E-Pace. Land Rover design boss Gerry McGovern has already strongly hinted about a “longer and lower” future generation of new Range Rover models that could introduce a more modern idea of a luxury interior.

Like the E-Pace, any Range Rover EV would need to have a smaller frontal area as a fundamental part of an energy-saving design. In the same way that the Audi Q6 e-tron has a notably lower roofline than an Audi Q7, a Range Rover EV would need to be aerodynamically much more efficient than today’s models to maximise the battery range. Height-adjustable air suspension will probably be used to offer both decent off-road performance and a road-hugging stance for higher-speed travel.

The Range Rover EV is unlikely to arrive before 2019. This bigger EV platform could also be adapted for a future range-topping Jaguar EV road car to take on the Porsche Mission E and future Teslas.

The Jaguar E-Pace baby SUV has been spotted for the first time as a full-bodied mule, ahead of its unveiling in early summer.

Sitting below the F-Pace and similar in size to the Range Rover Evoque, the five-seat E-Pace will rival models such as the Audi Q3.

The new SUV is set to use the Land Rover Discovery Sport’s steel platform and could be built alongside that model at the brand’s Halewood plant.

Comment: Why the E-Pace could be Jaguar's best seller

Spotted near JLR’s Gaydon HQ, the E-Pace resembles the F-Pace, with both the grille and roofline reminiscent of those of its larger sibling. It will also feature the latest development of Jaguar’s Incontrol Touch Pro infotainment system and showcase the firm’s improving interior quality.

It is expected to use 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol and diesel Ingenium engines, which are produced at Jaguar Land Rover’s Engine Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton.

In the Discovery Sport, the 178bhp 2.0-litre Ingenium diesel achieves 0-62mph in 9.9sec and 53.3mpg combined, while the 148bhp diesel records 11.7sec and 57.6mpg. The E-Pace will be lighter than the Discovery Sport, so these figures should improve.

Launching a car in such a fast-growing segment is likely to boost Jaguar’s sales. The F-Pace is the fastest-selling Jaguar yet, and a smaller SUV could do better still.

The new Jaguar is set to be unveiled in May, away from the motor show circuit. It will appear after the anticipated Range Rover Coupé, which is due at the Geneva motor show in March and is set to target the US market, which is key to JLR’s SUV fortunes.

The E-Pace is expected to undercut the Evoque, which starts at £30,600, and will cost significantly less than the F-Pace, priced from £35,020.

A Jaguar spokesman said: “We do not discuss our future product plans, but we are expanding our product ranges. As a result, there are many Jaguar and Land Rover development vehicles being tested at any one time.”
