Mercedes-Benz plans to preview the first step in what high ranking insiders describe as a broad-based electric vehicle strategy with the unveiling of a new pure electric powered SUV concept at the upcoming Paris motor show.

The new concept, currently undergoing construction at Mercedes' prototype workshop on the outskirts of Stuttgart in Germany, is said to provide “a clear insight” into the external appearance, interior appointments, technical layout and overall dimensions of the German car maker’s first truly dedicated electric vehicle - a uniquely styled SUV conceived to take on the Tesla Model X as well as new electric SUVs planned by Audi and Jaguar.

Mercedes-Benz set to release four EVs by 2020

The new zero-emissions SUV, tentatively planned for introduction in 2019, is the first in a series of a new electric vehicles currently under development by Mercedes, including an advanced upmarket saloon rival to the Tesla Model S and the recently unveiled Chinese LeEco LeSee, which has been conceived around the very latest in autonomous driving technology.

Up until now, Mercedes-Benz has based its limited number of production electric vehicles around existing models, namely the Smart Fortwo and Mercedes B-Class.

With the unveiling of the new SUV concept in Paris in late September, Mercedes will make public its plans for a range of uniquely styled and engineered electric vehicles to be offered as an alternative to its existing range of more traditional petrol, diesel and hybrid models.

As well as providing clues to a new electric vehicle platform under development at Mercedes – elements of which will be shared a soon to be unveiled hydrogen fuel cell propelled version of the GLC - the new SUV concept is also set to previews a brand new design language, developed by a team of in-house designers and set to be adopted by upcoming production version of the new electric SUV.

“We’ve created a whole new look that takes into consideration the unique properties of electric vehicles,” a Mercedes-Benz official with knowledge of the new electric vehicle concept revealed to Autocar.

Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz marketing boss, Ola Källenius, has hinted the German car maker may move to boost its electric vehicle efforts with an entry into Formula E.

Speaking on rumours the German car maker is actively planning to join Jaguar, Renault, Citroen and Volkswagen in supporting the global single seater electric vehicle race series, Kallenius said: “There’s no decision at the moment, but we are looking at it with great interest. It provides an interesting platform for electric vehicles though it would be important for us to ensure there is a clear technology transfer to our road cars.”

Non rimarra´il solo EV nella gamma, si parla di altri 2 modelli che pero´non dovrebbero comparire prima del 2020.

Mercedes-Benz's parent company Daimler is closing in on the launch of a new all-electric brand to rival BMW i, according to reports in the German newspaper Handelsblatt.

The brand would feature new all-electric models produced by Mercedes and sister brand Smart, but wouldn’t include hybrid versions of existing models.

Autocar revealed last month that Mercedes was considering launching such a brand, but sales and marketing boss Ola Källenius said increasing its range of all-electric models was the first priority.

If Handelsblatt’s claims are to be believed, it suggests this decision has been reversed and that Mercedes will now launch its new zero-emissions cars under the new marque from the off.

Already confirmed for this year are three electric models, comprised of a zero-emissions B-Class and two electric Smarts. An all-electric SUV based on the Mercedes GLC is also due to be revealed at this year’s Paris motor show, before going on sale next year. Handelsblatt says the new brand will be launched alongside that reveal.

Källenius confirmed the launch of the electric SUV when he told Autocar: “At the end of next year we will launch a next-generation fuel cell vehicle, which is a zero-emissions vehicle based on the GLC platform”.

Mercedes has so far declined to comment on today’s news.

FRANKFURT -- Daimler has accelerated development of Mercedes-Benz electric cars, CEO Dieter Zetsche said, adding that he saw the vehicle segment gaining market share.

"We are adjusting our planning in this field," Zetsche told analysts on Thursday during a call on second-quarter results.

His remarks to analysts come as rivals Tesla Motors and Audi prepare their own push to ramp up premium electric cars.

"It is very important to get the right timing," Zetsche said. "As a tendency, and as a trend, we have become more bullish in that regard."

Daimler will reveal more about its plans for electric cars at the Paris auto show in October, he said.

Daimler's Chief Development Officer Thomas Weber said last month that the automaker will display a prototype of an electric-powered Mercedes car with a 500-km (310-mile) range at the Paris show. It will go on sale before 2020, he said.

On Thursday, Daimler reiterated it will increase spending in research and development, which it expects to be "significantly above" last year's 6.6 billion euros, which was already a step up from 5.7 billion invested in 2014.

Daimler will invest in developing new low-emission and fuel-efficient engines, alternative drive systems, autonomous driving technology and a new generation of batteries.

The company said the return on sales at Mercedes-Benz Cars had fallen to 6.4 percent in the second quarter, from 10.5 percent in the year-earlier period. Excluding one-off items like a charge to pay for a recall of vehicles equipped with potentially faulty Takata airbags, the division's return on sales would have been 10 percent, Daimler said.

Investments to roll out new models, such as the latest Mercedes E class, dented the margin. But Zetsche believes an aggressive product push will help Mercedes overtake BMW to become the biggest selling luxury carmaker by sales.

"We believe we can overtake BMW and Audi before 2020," Zetsche told German magazine Wirtschaftswoche.

Last year, BMW retained the title of largest premium automaker posting sales of 1.91 million BMW-branded passenger cars while Mercedes sold 1.87 million cars, compared with a 3.6 percent jump to 1.80 vehicles sold by Audi.

On a group level Daimler's second-quarter earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) fell 12 percent, as a 605 million euros one-off gain from the sale of stakes in Renault and Nissan failed to offset a charge of 400 million euros related to antitrust proceedings, a 244 million euros impairment on shares in BAIC Motor, and 241 million euros in losses from currency transactions.

Nonetheless Daimler said it was sticking to forecasts for slightly higher EBIT in 2016 and significant growth for unit sales.

Mercedes-Benz is planning its own distinct line of electric vehicles, challenging BMW and Tesla Motors Inc. in a bet that alternative-fuel cars have the potential to become profitable.
Mercedes will add two electric sport utility vehicles and two sedans, according to two people familiar with the plan, who asked not to be named because the details haven’t been disclosed. Mercedes will create a new sub-brand for the cars, though a name hasn’t been chosen yet, one of the people said. Chief Executive Officer Dieter Zetsche said in June that the company planned to unveil an electric car at the Paris motor show in September.
Tesla’s success with the Model S sedan increased the pressure on other luxury-car makers, even as the U.S. company struggles with missed financial goals and delays in new models. Germany’s luxury-market leaders need to show they too can make electric innovations that capture the imagination of buyers, and they’re facing emissions regulations that require low-pollution vehicles. Yet customers in Mercedes’s home market of Germany, in particular, have been skeptical of limited driving range, long charging times, comparatively high prices and at times quirky designs.

Mercedes had previously stuck to adding batteries and electric motors to existing models, a cheaper solution than rival BMW AG’s investment in carbon fiber and futuristic design for its “i” brand. Now their positions are reversed: BMW’s holding off on a new “i” model for another five years. Mercedes will start selling its electric line-up before the end of the decade, one of the people familiar with the plans said.
In addition to the e-cars, Mercedes parent Daimler AG is planning its first all-electric heavy-duty delivery truck by the start of the next decade. The company has also promised electric versions of each of the vehicles in the Smart city-car brand.
“When Tesla started coming up many years ago we decided at the time, and I believe correctly, that the technology wasn’t quite ready,” Wolfgang Bernhard, Daimler’s trucks chief, said in an interview last week at the urban e-truck’s unveiling. “Now we believe the time has come to earn money in e-mobility over the next five to 10 years.”
Christoph Sedlmayr, a spokesman for Daimler, declined to comment on the number and model type of electric cars planned, while adding there will be more than one.
Bremen Factory
The first of the new electric autos will be produced at the company’s factory in Bremen, Germany, according to one person familiar with the plans. From next year, the Bremen plant will also build a fuel-cell electric version of the GLC SUV that can be charged both with hydrogen and at a wall socket.
The prototype set to be introduced in September will be an SUV capable of driving about 500 kilometers (310) miles on a single charge. It will also show the distinct design Mercedes has developed to set its electric cars apart.
Mercedes’ previous efforts to establish clean-driving cars had mixed results. A fuel-cell version of the B-Class sold few vehicles because of a patchy refueling network and high costs. Otherwise, the brand restricted itself to electric versions of existing models such as Smart and the boxy B-Class, which had a 155-kilometer range.

Mercedes-Benz’s electric vehicle sub-brand is believed to be called EQ, after parent company Daimler AG filed numerous UK trademark applications centred around those letters.

The trademarks, which include EQA, EQC, EQE, EQG and EQS, as well as more terms, including EQ Inside, EQ Boost and Generation EQ were all filed this month, under the motor vehicle classification.

Most of the trademarks can be applied to current vehicles in the Mercedes line-up; EQA applying to the A-Class, EQC to the C-Class, and so on, while the EQ Boost trademark could be used on badging for hybrid models, much like BMW’s iPerformance badging for the 330e, X5 xDrive40e and 740e.

The EQ sub-brand is likely to start with an electric SUV to be shown in concept form at next month’s Paris motor show. The model is understood to be the first of four Mercedes EVs due before the end of the decade, including a model aimed squarely at the market held by the Tesla Model S.

Generation EQ and Generation MEQ have also been filed, as has Telligent. The language used in the filed trademarks suggests a family of models which demonstrates innovation, while EQ Boost suggests that the ‘EQ’ part of the trademarks is linked in some way to powering the cars.

Official sources at Mercedes would not comment on the matter, but it has long been reported that Mercedes will launch an electric vehicle sub-brand akin to BMW’s i sub-brand imminently.

Alongside a Mercedes' sub-brand and BMW's i, Audi’s e-tron sub-brand provides the third prong of the ‘big three’ premium brands’ electric vehicle product offensives. Jaguar has also been spotted testing and developing electric models recently, as well as reportedly holding talks with Ford and BMW about a shared battery manufacturing plant.

FRANKFURT -- Mercedes-Benz owner Daimler plans to roll out at least six, and possibly as many as nine, electric car models as part of its push to compete with Tesla Motors, BMW and Audi, a person familiar with the plans told Reuters.

Automobilwoche, a sister publication of Automotive News Europe, earlier cited company sources as saying Daimler would bring to market more than six electric car models between 2018 and 2024.

Bloomberg reported last month that Mercedes will create a subbrand for electric cars.

German firms are investing heavily in electric cars, a segment once neglected by the industry as customers shunned their limited operating range and high cost.

But a growing political backlash against diesel fumes and recent advances in battery technology to increase the reach of an electric car by up to 50 percent have spurred major investments by Volkswagen, Daimler and suppliers such as Bosch and Continental.

Reuters' source said Mercedes would also make an SUV model with a plug-in hybrid engine powered by fuel cells, which would have a range of up to 50 km (30 miles) on battery power and would then run on electricity generated by hydrogen.

Daimler remains on track to unveil a new electric car at the Paris auto show on September 28.


Mercedes sembrerebbe pronta ad un assalto in forze al mercato ( per ora minuscolo) dei veicoli elettrici.
Automobilwoche parla di 9 veicoli previsti entro il 2024, 3 arriveranno prima del 2020.
Il primo sarà la EQC un suv elettrico di segmento D, il concept verrà presentato a Parigi mentre la versione di serie arriverà nel 2019, ci sarà anche una versione a idrogeno con fuel cell.

Mercedes-Benz will launch 10 new electric vehicles by 2025 in a bid to become the global leader in EV technology, Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche said.

The 10 new models underpin the automaker's aim for electric cars to account for between 15 percent and 25 percent of its global sales by 2025, Zetsche said today at the auto show here.

Zetsche also confirmed that the new EVs will be launched under the umbrella of a new subbrand, dubbed "EQ." Mercedes previewed its first EQ vehicle with the Generation EQ concept, a battery-powered small crossover with a 500km range.

"EQ stands for a comprehensive electric ecosystem of services, technologies and innovations," Zetsche said.

Daimler said the Generation EQ is a "close-to-production" concept. Its electric drive system has two electric motors, with a system output that can be increased to up to 300 kilowatts thanks to scalable battery components, Daimler said in a statement. It also permanent all-wheel drive to deliver high-level performance.

Mercedes' new electric vehicles will be based on an architecture developed specifically for battery-electric models. "The wheelbase and track width as well as all other system components, especially the batteries, are variable thanks to the modular building-block system," Daimler said. The basic architecture is suitable for SUVs, sedans, coupes and other model series, it said.

Mercedes punta a mettere in commercio ben 10 modelli esclusivamente elettrici entro il 2025.

Der Stuttgarter Automobilkonzern Daimler Börsen-Chart zeigen will deutlich mehr als bislang in Entwicklung und Bau von Elektrofahrzeugen investieren. Konzernchef Dieter Zetsche kalkuliere mit 1 bis 1,5 Milliarden Euro jährlich, berichtet das manager magazin in seiner am Freitag erschienenen Ausgabe. Daimler hatte auf dem Automobilsalon in Paris Ende September den Aufbau einer eigenen Elektromarke EQ angekündigt. Das erste Modell der neuen E-Serie soll 2019 auf den Markt kommen und gut 500 Kilometer Batteriereichweite erreichen. Zielmarke für den ersten EQ seien 40 000 verkaufte Autos pro Jahr, sagen Unternehmensinsider.

Aktuelles Reichweiten-Ranking: So weit kommen die Elektroautos
Ab dem für 2020/21 geplanten zweiten Modell sollen die EQ-Modelle eine eigene Basisarchitektur bekommen. Diese Plattform sei für Limousinen und SUVs etwa ab der Größe der Mercedes-C-Klasse gedacht, heißt es bei Daimler. Sie solle so konstruiert werden, dass sie auf den gleichen Produktionslinien wie Modelle mit Verbrennungsmotoren gebaut werden könnten. Auf dieser Architektur solle jedoch zunächst nur ein Teil der Elektroautomobile gebaut werden, berichten Daimler-Manager.

Vertriebsvorstand Ola Källenius geht davon aus, dass 2025 zwischen 15 und 25 Prozent der verkauften Mercedes- und Smart-Fahrzeuge elektrisch angetrieben sein werden. Das würde bedeuten, dass der Konzern bis zu 750 000 Elektroautos verkauft. Die Fahrzeuge sollten langfristig nicht nur in Europa, sondern auch in China und wohl auch Nordamerika gebaut werden, berichtet das manager magazin weiter. Als zentraler Standort sei Sindelfingen vorgesehen. Konzernchef Zetsche hatte kürzlich angedeutet, dass das erste EQ-Modell 2019 in Bremen gebaut werden könnte.

Daimler will für die Elektromarke EQ und auch neue Mobilitätsdienstleistungen eine eigene Tochtergesellschaft gründen. Diese Einheit ähnele der Mercedes-Tochter AMG für besonders sportliche Modelle. Geführt werde sie von Axel Harries, heißt es in Stuttgart. Mercedes-Cheffinanzer Frank Lindenberg soll die Aufsicht haben.


Secondo Manager Magazin Daimler sarebbe pronta ad investire in maniera pesante nei veicoli elettrici, almeno 1,5 miliardi di euro l'anno ( dato che ogni anno Mercedes investe 5,8 miliardi non sarebbero 2 spiccioli).
Il primo veicolo sarebbe il D-suv a partire dal 2019, Mercedes attuerà una strategia molto simile a quella di Vw perché i modelli EV avranno un pianale dedicato ma sarà strettamente derivato da quello MRA.
In pratica questa È-suv sarà la versione elettrica della GLC.

Ma tutta questa corsa all'auto elettrica ( che a me piace, come concetto) prevede qualcosina sulle modalità di ricarica o si butta il prodotto sul mercato e poi sono problemi dei consumatori scoprire come tentare di conciliare tempi di ricarica e vita comune? Perchè finchè sono giocattolini come la twizzy si fa in fretta, finchè sono polmoni come la life o la zoe con autonomia al limite del sufficiente ancora ancora si fa qualcosa, ma se si comincia a parlare di pacchi batterie da 60kw come la futura Bolt, la I3, la Tesla ( nelle versioni più scarse) si fa presto a calcolare quanto ci vuole sfruttando tutti la corrente che si può avere in casa tenendo tutte le utenze, led del televisore compreso, spente.

Capitolo colonnine di ricarica pubbliche: premesso che ho letto certe tensioni e potenze degne di una sedia elettrica (con tutti i rischi del caso), poniamo anche che si mettano in giro colonnine con corrente erogata nell'ordine dei 40-50 kw (ora, da me, stanno mettendo quelle a 22kw). Vuol dire che per avere una ricarica completa o quasi serve almeno mezz'ora di tempo. Che va benissimo finchè le colonnine sono 10 e l'auto elettrica l'abbiamo in 20. Ma se le colonnine sono 500 e l'auto elettrica l'abbiamo in 5.000 il rischio di mettersi in coda ed aspettare 2-3 ore per poter ricaricare è ben più che aleatorio.

Questo lo dico da fan dell'auto elettrica; che mi piace un sacco, adoro tutte queste nuove proposte, ma poi il mondo reale è un'altra cosa.
Imho, per ora la soluzione Mirai (Toyota) è ancora quella più intelligente

Il problema, chiamiamolo così, delle colonnine, è che fanno il loro lavoro se tu puoi lasciarci attaccata l'auto per un po'. Ovvero se vai in un posto per fare qualcosa (shopping, incontri di lavoro, corsi, ufficio e via dicendo) e lasci li l'auto per qualche ora; quando hai finito trovi l'auto carica e sei a posto.
Ma il problema è se ti trovi a dover ricaricare mentre stai "girando", che con un uso intensivo dell'auto elettrica come fosse un'auto a motore termico non è ipotesi così peregrina. Col termico ti fermi al primo distributore, sei fortunato ed in 5 minuti fai il pieno, hai davanti un'auto ed i minuti diventano 10, due auto ed i minuti diventano 15. Ma se hai un'auto elettrica i primi 5 minuti diventano minimo mezz'ora, se davanti non hai nessuno....altrimenti possono diventare 1 ora, un'ora e 30, due ore. Che è una cosa semplicemente improponibile.
Detta in soldoni, la velcoità di trasferimento di energia dalla cisterna al serbatoio dell'auto con i combustibili fossili è immensamente più rapida che a trasferire elettroni dalla rete alle batterie

Ma tutta questa corsa all'auto elettrica ( che a me piace, come concetto) prevede qualcosina sulle modalità di ricarica o si butta il prodotto sul mercato e poi sono problemi dei consumatori scoprire come tentare di conciliare tempi di ricarica e vita comune? Perchè finchè sono giocattolini come la twizzy si fa in fretta, finchè sono polmoni come la life o la zoe con autonomia al limite del sufficiente ancora ancora si fa qualcosa, ma se si comincia a parlare di pacchi batterie da 60kw come la futura Bolt, la I3, la Tesla ( nelle versioni più scarse) si fa presto a calcolare quanto ci vuole sfruttando tutti la corrente che si può avere in casa tenendo tutte le utenze, led del televisore compreso, spente.

Capitolo colonnine di ricarica pubbliche: premesso che ho letto certe tensioni e potenze degne di una sedia elettrica (con tutti i rischi del caso), poniamo anche che si mettano in giro colonnine con corrente erogata nell'ordine dei 40-50 kw (ora, da me, stanno mettendo quelle a 22kw). Vuol dire che per avere una ricarica completa o quasi serve almeno mezz'ora di tempo. Che va benissimo finchè le colonnine sono 10 e l'auto elettrica l'abbiamo in 20. Ma se le colonnine sono 500 e l'auto elettrica l'abbiamo in 5.000 il rischio di mettersi in coda ed aspettare 2-3 ore per poter ricaricare è ben più che aleatorio.

Questo lo dico da fan dell'auto elettrica; che mi piace un sacco, adoro tutte queste nuove proposte, ma poi il mondo reale è un'altra cosa.
Imho, per ora la soluzione Mirai (Toyota) è ancora quella più intelligente


a breve-medio termine non ci sarà sviluppo di infrastrutture. Fiat ha chiaramente detto che la sua mobilità a medio termine è a gas.. quindi ciccia colonnine.

Molte concessionarie, come quelle mercedes, avranno la loro colonnina a disposizione dei clienti.

Detta in soldoni, la velcoità di trasferimento di energia dalla cisterna al serbatoio dell'auto con i combustibili fossili è immensamente più rapida che a trasferire elettroni dalla rete alle batterie

Verissimo. Mi viene da ridere quello che dice che ricarica la sera con i pannelli solari :D :D :D

Io sono un fan assoluto della propulsione elettrica; però è meglio tenere i piedi per terra, le problematiche da superare sono ancora elevate. Ho letto di studi avanzati su strade con ricarica ad induzione mentre il veicoli circola, ma quiando arriveranno veramente simili infrastrutture rimane un mistero; senza contare la tua correttissima osservazione sulla produzione di energia

Oltre ai 4 cilindri arriveranno anche i nuovi 6 cilindri in linea con potenze simili agli attuali v8 insieme al 6 cilindri diesel che avrà una potenza di 313 cavalli doppia turbina e circa 650 nm di coppia. Questi nuovi propulsori esordiranno con il my 2017 della classe S attesa per i primi mesi del 2017

Daimler sta spendendo cifre molto imponenti, hanno aperto 3 fabbriche di motori in 3 anni (4 se consideriamo l'alleanza con Nissan), anche se si arriveranno le previsioni di elettriche al 25% nel 2025 sarà ancora necessario investire nei motori a combustione.

Una volta usavano il diesel ed i test farlocchi di omologazione per abbassare le emissioni medie della gamma; adesso sono arrivati allo step successivo, modelli inutili per percorrere poche centinaia di km ( se va di lusso, in pianura) al colpo.

la ricarica veloce è sconsigliata anche da tesla per non rovinare le batterie..

500 km di autonomia li hai in pianura ed a velocità costante ( bassa). Tesla da 512 km di autonomia a 100 km costanti, che diventano già 406 km a 120 costanti. In pianura. Con cerchi da 19, perchè se si mettono i cerchi da 21 si perdono altri 20 km.
Nel'uso normale i 500 km di autonomia, considerando che trovare una ricarica, in giro, è molto più difficile che trovare un distributore, e quindi non si può arrivare al limite dell'autonomia ma bisogna essere prudenti e tenersi almeno una cinquantina di km di sicurezza, diventano meno di 350. Ovvero io un Trento Bologna e ritorno, senza fermarmi a ricaricare, difficilmente lo faccio.
Capitolo ricarica. Se mi trovo in riserva con la mia auto e devo fare il pieno e mi trovo davanti 3 macchine aspetto 10 minuti. Se mi trovo davanti 3 macchine elettriche aspetto 2 ore per loro più un'altra mezz'ora per me. Le ricariche veloci possono essere fatte a patto di usare cavi di diametro enormi con tensioni da sedia elettrica, e comunque deteriorano le batterie, tanto che mi sembra la stessa Tesla le sconsiglia dove si possano evitare. Edito, non mi ero accorto che la stessa cosa l'aveva scritta anche Ste. Addirittura mi sembra che il software di bordo riconosca le troppe ricariche veloci ed inibisca la garanzia. Senza contare che Tesla sta rifondendo a botte di 6-7.000 euro i clienti norvegesi che stanno facendo causa perchè le prestazioni non sono quelle premosse. Si spinge sull'acceleratore, dopo un po' l'elettronica vede il surriscaldamento e manda in protezione l'ambaradan. Ovviamente negli spari che si vedono su youtube, spettacolari, il tempo non è sufficiente per mandare in surriscaldamento l'apparato elettrico. Nell'uso comune, capita.

Ora come ora, con la tecnologia attuale, l'elettrica è un giocattolo per benestanti che possono permettersi più auto e sceglierne una a combustione per gli spostamenti intensivi o non pianificati. Nel mio caso, pe rmia moglie sarebbe stata perfetta. Prendendo l'Aygo a benzina abbiamo risparmiato 10.000 euro che non verranno mai ripagati da risparmi sul pieno, bollo gratis o minor manutenzione. Senza contare che l'Aygo ha una fruibilità, alla luce di cosa ho esposto sopra, immensa rispetto ad una segmento B elettrica.

E tutto questo, amaramente, lo dico da fan sfegatato di un'auto elettrica. Il futuro sono le celle a combustibile, non l'elettrico puro. Ma quello, dopo il dieselgate, è perfetto per abbassare le emissioni medie di gamma; Toyota, che non ha eccessivo bisogno di abbassare le emissioni di gamma, non propone elettriche, propone la Mirai. Che è una cosa seria e funziona, e pure bene. Peccato faccia schifo anche al buio, ma quello è un leit motive frequente sui prodotti ad alta tecnologia della casa giapponese

Come il vecchio proprietario dell'azienda per cui lavoro, che ha una tesla per arrivare al massimo a Milano (ma a quanto ne so non è che si fidi più di tanto ad andare se non ha la possibilità di ricaricare) affiancata da una S500.. (e non so che altro).

Mercedes-Benz is set to build on its newly established EQ electric car sub-brand with the unveiling of a zero-emission hatchback concept at the Frankfurt motor show in September, Autocar can reveal.

The new electric car concept, presently undergoing construction at Mercedes-Benz’s in-house prototype workshop near its headquarters in Stuttgart, is said to preview the German car maker’s planned entry-level EQ A. That model is planned to go on sale in 2020 as part of a full line-up of electric-powered models.

Conceived as a direct rival to the BMW i3 and an upcoming production version of the Volkswagen I.D., the new electric hatchback is among 10 new EVs being developed by Mercedes-Benz in an £8.6 billion programme and which are planned to go on sale before 2025.

The initial EQ model, the EQ C SUV, was unveiled in concept guise as part of a public debut for Mercedes-Benz’s dedicated electric car EQ sub-brand at last year’s Paris motor show. Recent trademark applications suggest there will there also be an EQ E and an EQ S.

First ride: Mercedes-Benz EQ concept car

Described to Autocar as a central pillar in Mercedes-Benz’s bid to become an electric car leader within the next decade, the EQ A hatchback is expected to be the volume seller of the EQ line-up with a price-tag of less than £35,000 when sales get under way in around two and a half years from now.

The second EQ model will play an important role in the future of Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler’s Car-To-Go car sharing division, with high-level executives suggesting it will be offered on a short-term drive away lease basis as part of a global mobility ‘ecosystem’.

Based around Mercedes-Benz’s new modular electric architecture (MEA) platform, the EQ A hatchback will follow the lead of the EQ C in adopting a conventional silhouette, with a defined bonnet line at the front, a traditional glasshouse housing a five-seat cabin and a hatchback-style tailgate at the rear.

Despite the similarities in shape with conventional combustion-engined hatchbacks, Autocar has been told it will receive the same black panel grille treatment and surfacing treatment as the EQ C.

Secrecy surrounds the driveline layout of the EQ A, although Mercedes-Benz hints at a cheaper and simpler solution than the set-up used by the EQ C. That suggests it will receive a single front-mounted electric motor, with drive sent to the front wheels via a fixed-ratio gearbox.

A more performance-orientated set-up, with a second electric motor mounted within the rear axle assembly and providing four-wheel drive capability similar to that seen on the EQ C, is also under discussion, according to sources.

Mercedes-Benz has confirmed the EQ C will be produced at its plant in Bremen, Germany, with other more upmarket EQ models, including the EQ E and EQ S, set to be assembled at its main manufacturing site in Sindelfingen, Germany. While remaining tight-lipped on where the EQ A production will take place, officials hint that it will likely be built on a special line at Mercedes-Benz’s original compact car plant in Rastatt, Germany.

The plant in Tuscaloosa exclusively provides worldwide clients with the SUV models GLE, GLS and GLE Coupé that continue the proud tradition of quality associated with Mercedes-Benz. With the upcoming production of the next SUV generation the plant will enhance its proven production portfolio with modern plug-in hybrids, responding flexibly and efficiently to market demand. With the additional integration of electric vehicles, the plant is shaping the future of electric mobility worldwide. The announcement was part of the 20-year celebration at MBUSI. Dignitaries attending the event included Alabama Governor Kay Ellen Ivey as well as other local and state officials.

“This is an exciting day for MBUSI and our entire team here in Alabama,” said Jason Hoff, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz U.S. International during the “All Team Member” meeting. “Looking back on 20 years of production, the Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa has been a success story from the beginning. We are now continuing this story with a clear vision for the era of electric mobility. We are proud that Tuscaloosa will be an integral part of our company’s evolution to electric vehicles contributing to the long-term success of Mercedes-Benz Cars.”

“The fact that Mercedes-Benz continues to expand its operations in Alabama makes a powerful statement about the quality of the global automaker’s workforce in the state, and underscores that we are achieving our goal of ensuring businesses in Alabama don't just survive, but thrive,” Governor Kay Ivey said. “For the past two decades, MBUSI has been a tremendous partner in the growth of our state, and we look forward to strengthening those bonds in the years to come.”

Tuscaloosa is home to Mercedes-Benz’s SUV production for the world market, having started production of the former M-Class (today the GLE) in 1997. As the first automotive manufacturing location in the State of Alabama, the plant also served as the catalyst for additional OEMs, automotive suppliers and supporting businesses to come to the area, creating thousands of jobs in the region and leading to Alabama's strong position as one of the key automotive business clusters in the United States. Mercedes-Benz exports more than 70 percent of its SUVs to markets around the globe. With an earlier investment of $1.3 billion announced in 2015, the plant is currently being expanded to prepare for the production of the next SUV generation including plug-in hybrid models. The plant expansion comprises a new Body Shop, major enhancements to the SUV Assembly Shop as well as upgraded logistics and IT systems.

Electric vehicles from the family of EQ branded products

Mercedes-Benz will start producing SUV models of the EQ brand in Tuscaloosa at the beginning of the next decade. EQ models will be integrated into the series production at the plant. This is possible because of the early investments in flexibility and technical equipment at the plant that offer trailblazing Industry 4.0 technologies. With the Tuscaloosa plant, Mercedes-Benz will have electric mobility hubs on three continents serving customers’ demand around the globe.

By 2022, the company will electrify the entire portfolio of Mercedes, offering customers at least one electrified alternative in all segments from smart to large SUVs. The company is planning to offer more than 50 electrified vehicle variants. At the same time, Mercedes-Benz will be continuously supporting the development of plug-in hybrids and the introduction of 48-volt-systems. The first EQ series model, EQC, will go into production in 2019 in Bremen, Germany. Technology and product brand EQ is an integral part of CASE, which stands for the intelligent combination of the strategic pillars of connectivity (Connected), autonomous driving (Autonomous), flexible use (Shared & Services) and electric drive systems (Electric).

Fifth Mercedes-Benz factory to produce batteries

The battery factory near plant Tuscaloosa will be part of the global battery production network of Mercedes-Benz Cars for local demand and export. In total, Daimler will invest $1.18 billion (more than one billion Euros) in the battery production network, which will also include production facilities in Germany and China. As in vehicle production, the battery production network will react flexibly and efficiently to market demand. This strategy ensures the ongoing availability of modern battery technology through local production hubs in Europe, China and the U.S. and puts Mercedes-Benz in a highly competitive position for its electric initiative. Construction work for the new one million square-foot facility in Tuscaloosa is expected to begin in 2018, with operations planned to start at the beginning of the next decade.

Expansion of logistics activities

Expanding its industrial footprint, Mercedes-Benz is also building a new Global Logistics Center and a new after-sales North American hub in Bibb County, five miles from the plant in Tuscaloosa.

The Global Logistics Center will support worldwide logistics operations connected with products “Made in Tuscaloosa” and will supply oversea assembly plants with car-kits, where Mercedes-Benz produces vehicles for local markets. Operations including brand new IT systems to support lean logistics processes in the new warehouse are scheduled to begin in 2019.

Additionally, Mercedes-Benz is consolidating the three existing after-sales warehouses at a new location. The new after-sales North American hub will be co-located with the new Global Logistics Center providing markets abroad with spare parts. This allows the company to meet rising market demands amid the growing variety of models. The new hub is scheduled to start its operations at the end of 2020.
