One of the most distinctive design elements of the redesigned Opel Astra unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show is its “floating” roofline, an element likely to appear on future Opels -- and by extension, future Buicks.

Opel made the new Astra compact a bit smaller than its predecessor, but managed to increase interior space. That’s good for weight reduction and roominess. But it creates a styling problem.

“When you keep the same height but squeeze some size out of the car, it becomes more square-ish and can look taller and stumpier,” Opel design chief Mark Adams said in an interview. “That’s not good, so we needed to hide it visually.”

A key solution: Adams' team blacked out the C-pillar, near the rear of the car, and extended the chrome strip that runs along the roofline through the pillar to the car’s spoiler. It gives the appearance that the rear of the roof is floating on its own above the body.

“With a conventional C-pillar, your eye visually travels to that C-pillar and then stops,” Adams says. “What this does is allow your eye to travel all the way through it. You’re stretching the shape, making the car look lower and more coupe-like.”

Nissan deploys the same trick in the 2016 Maxima and some other vehicles.

Ed Welburn, GM's global design chief, says the floating roofline is “an element that you’ll be seeing on future Opels.” My translation: you’ll see it in Buick showrooms someday too, as Buick and Opel’s design language continues to converge.

These are the latest spy pictures of the replacement for the Vauxhall Meriva - and they show that the new car will move away from its pure MPV heritage and get conventional doors instead of the controversial rear-hinged back doors of the existing model.

The new model - which is likely drop the Meriva name - is expected to be revealed towards the end of 2016 ahead of first deliveries taking place in early 2017. It's the first car to come from Vauxhall's partnership with PSA Peugeot Citroën, announced in 2012, and will result in new models for both French manufacturers in the near future.

The existing Meriva promised greater ease of access from its rear-hinged back doors, but the continued presence of a B-pillar meant that the gains were modest - and the expensive, complex construction appears to have been abandoned for the next generation. Our spy photographer managed to capture an image with the rear door open - and it has a more conventional front-hinged design.

Sales of traditional MPVs continue to fall across Europe and Vauxhall appears to have taken the strategic decision to morph its entry-level MPV into a fresh new crossover. A similar move was taken by Renault last year, with the revitalised Espace taking on a more SUV-like shape rather than keeping its MPV proportions. Such a move has allowed Renault to capitalise on the growing demand for small SUVs and crossovers in Europe.

The new Meriva is likely to benefit from shared engines with the Corsa and Astra. Although development is still in the early stages, Vauxhall is also deciding whether to use PSA engines to power the Meriva as well as its own units.

Vauxhall is likely to raise significantly the perceived quality of the cabin, with improvements to fit and finish, as it has in the new Corsa and Astra. The IntelliLink infotainment system is expected to be transferred from the Corsa and Astra, and is likely to be standard on all but entry-level models. It features a 7.0in colour touchscreen located on the centre console between the driver and front passenger.

The Meriva won’t be the only new entrant into this growing market for long, as Ford is expected to launch two new crossovers based on the Fiesta and Focus by 2016. Ford and Vauxhall will then take the fight for sales to Dacia, Fiat and Nissan, all of which are already established in the small crossover sector with the Duster, 500X and Juke respectively.

La prossima Meriva avrà un nome ed una missione diversi dall'attuale, cercherà spazio nel segmento B-crossover/suv.
Il segmento B-mpv era pieno di promesse rimaste poi sulla carta, la prima Meriva arrivava a vendere più di 200.000 unità mentre la seconda generazione non sfonda le 60.000.
Non sono molto convinto di questa strategia, hanno in casa già la Mokka che è un trionfo, chi si comprerebbe questo pseudo crossover senza trazione integrale?.
Presentazione prevista per fine 2016 con commercializzazione per inizio 2017.

Sono uscite anche le foto spia della C3 Picasso e di lato e al posteriore Meriva e C3 Picasso sembrano identiche.

Da queste foto spia la Meriva e la C3 Picasso differiscono solo per il frontale.

Neumann vuole con questa terza generazione rilanciare la Meriva, nutro fortissimi dubbi su questa speranza.

Beh dopo il 3/4 posteriore di astra sw e del restyling pesante di corsa da Opel c'è da aspettarsi il peggio a livello di stile:-)

Ricostruzione
Mi domando come pensano di venderla, non sembra bella, non è né suv né minivan, ha la concorrenza in casa di Astra sw e Mokka più la cugina C3 Picasso.

Anche se in modo meno "fumettistico" hanno ripreso il concetto di 500L ,ibrido tra mpv e suv,che mi pare sia ormai la più venduta della categoria anche in Europa grazie però quasi esclusivamente al successo che ancor oggi ha in Italia.
Cmq se si vedono le foto dei prototipi le proporzioni sono più alte da mpv rispetto a questo rendering.

Opel/Vauxhall's Meriva replacement will ditch the minivan looks of the current model for crossover styling but it won't be a SUV.

The Meriva successor will have a "very stylized" design that is softer than the off-road look of the automaker's Mokka subcompact SUV, CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann said.

With sales of SUVs and crossovers booming, automakers face the challenge of giving their people movers a high-riding, SUV-like look while still maintaining the roominess and practicality of minivans.

Opel rival Peugeot has swapped boxy minivan looks for a rugged SUV appearance with its latest 3008 and 5008 models. Another rival, Renault, has given its Scenic and Espace vehicles softer crossover styling while – like Peugeot -- ditching the boxy styling of previous generations.

For the Meriva replacement, Opel has gone a similar design route to Renault for technical reasons. The model will use a PSA Group platform as part of an industrial partnership between its parent General Motors and the French automaker.

Neumann said Opel originally wanted the Meriva successor to be a minivan like the current car but the plan was dropped because the automaker could not make the design work on the PSA platform. "We tried to do a Meriva and failed and so we said maybe this is not the right car," he said, adding that a crossover design looked much better.

The model will be built at Opel's factory in Zaragoza, Spain, where the current Meriva is produced. Opel also will build the replacements for the Peugeot 2008 and Citroen C3 Picasso in the factory as part of the GM-PSA partnership.

Neumann said the Meriva successor will look very different to the Peugeot and Citroen models. "We didn’t want to come with a badged version of something," he said in a roundtable discussion with journalists at the Paris auto show earlier this month.

Opel has not said whether the model will keep the Meriva name. It's due to go on sale next year after an expected debut at the Geneva auto show in March.

Crossover blitz

The Meriva successor is the first of three new SUV-styled crossovers planned by Opel.

The next will be a compact SUV/crossover that will replace the Zafira minivan and the Antara SUV, which is currently being run out. The compact model will be built by PSA in its plant in Sochaux, France, which builds the Peugeot 3008. It is expected to go on sale in 2018.

The car will plug a big gap in the line-up for Opel, which currently has no model to compete against strong-selling mainstream SUVs such as the Nissan Qashqai, Ford Kuga, Hyundai Tuscon and Kia Sportage.

The third SUV/crossover will be midsize car that will share a platform with the Insignia. This model will have much tougher in looks compared with the softer subcompact and compact crossovers, Neumann said.

Opel's midsize SUV will be built on a GM platform shared with the Buick brand, reports have said. It expected to go on sale by 2020 and will be built at Opel's main factory in Ruesselsheim, Germany.

Karl Thomas Neumann, ceo di Opel, ha rivelato qualche dettaglio sulla prossima Meriva ( non si sa se il nome verrà mantenuto, probabilmente no), la base tecnica sarà la stessa delle prossima 2008 e C3 Picasso, la produzione avverrà nell'impianto Opel di Saragozza.
L'impostazione stilistica seguirà l'esempio della Renault Captur quindi più filante di una monovolume ma non una vera e propria suv per non pestare i piedi alla Mokka.
Neumann ha anche confermato la C-Suv ( sempre su pianale Peugeot, sostituirà sia la Zafira che la Antara) e la Monza suv.
