esatto.
CMP:
segmento B (corsa, 2008, nuova punto) termico ed elettrico
B Suv (2008, nuova Mokka, Alfa suv piccolo, ecc) termico ed elettrico.

EMP2
Segmento C (308, ecc)

Even so, the French side is being very generous financially in exchange for gaining control of the boardroom. Peugeot boss Carlos Tavares will have the casting vote. Is it worth it?

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is making an all-out push to clear away tens of thousands of vehicles that its dealers haven’t ordered, adding to tensions over a new data-driven production strategy that can lead to swelling inventory.

The Italian-American automaker is offering its most aggressive discounts since the financial crisis to sell certain 2019 model-year cars under its Dodge, Jeep and Ram brands, internal marketing documents show. In a conference call last week, sales staff were asked to work overtime to press the company’s network of 2,400 dealers to take more vehicles and shrink the unassigned inventory to zero before Christmas.

For Fiat Chrysler, now in a merger deal with France’s PSA Group, the sales blitz marks a costly scramble after it accumulated a stock of as many as 70,000 unassigned cars for the month of December. The company says the build-up is the result of a year-old system to streamline manufacturing by using data analytics to forecast demand, which can cause supply to wax and wane. But it’s also leading to internal strains, with some employees expressing frustration that the cars produced don’t match market preferences, according to the conference call and people with knowledge of the matter.

The magnitude of discounts Fiat Chrysler is resorting to in order to coax dealers to take on the vehicles sends a troubling signal for the automaker’s most important region. Spending on incentives impinges on earnings, and the company is almost entirely reliant on the money it’s making in North America. The situation also shows the challenges carmakers face when adopting new technology to overhaul entrenched practices.

Carrying the Load
Fiat Chrysler earns almost all its money from North America

In a perfect world, auto companies manufacture only as many cars as the market is willing to absorb, based on dealer orders. If they make too many, they may ply consumers with incentives to move metal, or lay off factory workers and cut production; too few, and they can either raise prices, or ramp up output to meet demand. The problem is that cutting production means a lower return on the billions invested to produce a vehicle, so it’s often cheaper to overproduce and then use incentives to subsidize sales.

Four dealers told Bloomberg last month that they were being prodded to take cars from what they called a sales bank –- a stock of vehicles the manufacturer built despite lacking orders for them from retailers. The decades-old practice is frowned upon in the industry because it can obscure supply figures and increase pressure on dealers to take vehicles they don’t want. Inventory numbers reported to third-party researchers only count cars on dealer lots.

Predictive Data

Fiat Chrysler disputes that it’s operating a sales bank. It says the car build-up is a temporary side effect of the predictive analytics system, which saved the company 400 million euros ($445 million) through the third quarter, and trimmed 140,000 units from its total inventory. It was put in place by North America Chief Operating Officer Mark Stewart, who joined last year from Amazon.com Inc.

“Our new supply chain management strategy based on predictive analytics continues to work well for us, even as we continue to refine it,” said Niel Golightly, Fiat Chrysler’s global chief communications officer.

The automaker’s shares slipped as much as 0.3% as of 10:30 a.m. in New York. They’re up 4.5% this year, trailing a 28% gain for the S&P 500 Index.

Fiat Chrysler’s stock of excess inventory can fluctuate. The company had a supply of 40,000 unassigned cars in the third quarter that eventually was whittled down to 5,000. The number swelled to 60,000 in November, and 70,000 in December, according to a person with knowledge of the matter, who asked not to be named because the figures are private. It was down to 25,800 vehicles this week.

In the internal marketing email last month, the company outlined new incentives to move “bank units.” Fiat Chrysler has been offering employee pricing that it’s touted as the most aggressive since 2008, shaving 5% off what the dealer pays, plus applying additional rebates to certain vehicles.

Employee pricing is “pretty rare” and was a big boost to sales in November, said Josh Towbin, co-owner of Towbin Automotive in Las Vegas. “It’s working for us, we like it a lot,” said Towbin, who added he hasn’t felt pressured to take unassigned cars.

Still, a Dec. 11 conference call with field sales staff revealed representatives in the automaker’s nine sales regions are working overtime, including during the weekend, to urge dealers to take more cars and empty out the bank by the end of this week.

Several staff expressed frustration on the call that the vehicle configurations dictated by the analytics system don’t match market demand, undermining the company’s claims that its supply is based on software that predicts the most-wanted packages. For instance, the inventory includes 2019 heavy-duty Ram Bighorn trucks with 20-inch wheels that cost $1,600, while dealers want trucks with 18-inch wheels that come standard, one sales executive separately told Bloomberg.

Even dealers who do need fresh inventory aren’t willing to take vehicles from the bank because of the undesirable configurations, people said during the call.

“I know that not all the dealers are playing ball,” Mike Koval, U.S. director of Ram brand product marketing, said on the call. Of the 2,400 Fiat Chrysler dealerships in the U.S., more than 60% have refused to take more than five units in December, he said. “I don’t know what the magic formula is, but we need to work together to crack that code.”

Fiat Chrysler put a limit on dealer orders in December to instead work through existing cars in the sales bank, Bloomberg reported last month. Going forward, dealers will again be able to order cars from the plants, in tandem with production dictated by the analytics system, Koval said on the call. However, the surplus of cars is likely to continue.

“As we look forward to Q1 2020, it looks like there’s really no end in sight on this stuff,” he said. “This might be the new normal for a while.

The purpose of any merger is to reap the benefits of a larger market share and see potential costs savings. However, a big part of a merger’s success is determined by how the new company tackles both the strengths and weaknesses of the combined assets. It is important that the new siblings do not compete with one another to ensure the merger can expand the group’s presence in the market.

Fiat against Peugeot, Citroen and Opel?

The Fiat brand presents the biggest area of uncertainty for the new group. It currently faces a number of challenges, including an aging lineup, lack of key models and minimal presence outside of Italy and Brazil. In contrast, Jeep is an appealing counterpart, benefitting from a strong reputation among consumers worldwide.

Fiat’s global sales highlights the difficult situation the brand is facing. In 2009, when Chrysler Group was acquired by Fiat Group, brand sales accounted for 3.7% and 8% of global and European markets respectively. However, as of November this year, market share has fallen to 1.5% globally and 5% in Europe.

Alongside the need to renew their model lineup, Fiat must work to strategically position themselves in the market. The lack of brand identity means it is difficult to both describe and place Fiat within the automotive landscape. Over the last two decades, their product plan has lacked strategic vision, including an unusual combination of city-cars (Seicento, 500, Panda, Uno, Mobi), big wagons (Croma, Freemont), midsize pickups (Fullback) and sport cars (124 Spider, Coupe, Barchetta).

Carlos Tavares intends to reposition Fiat as the ‘small car’ brand of the new group. It is likely that the strategy will place Fiat in a new field, away from its siblings – Peugeot, Citroen and Opel. This is because it would be difficult to add a fourth mainstream player to the already crowded portfolio.

It is likely that the new strategy will place Fiat in a new field, away from its siblings – Peugeot, Citroen and Opel.

REPORT THIS AD

REPORT THIS AD

As a result, Fiat will be able to operate in a new segment and make use of its best values: charming, friendly, lovely and funny cars. Instead of adding more models in the B and C mainstream segments, that would most likely result in cannibalisation alongside its French and German cousins, Fiat will be able to focus on iconic models, including city-cars, subcompacts, small SUVs and small MPVs. It is important to consider that city-cars accounted for 42% of Fiat global passenger car sales in H1 2019, and more than half of its volume in Europe.

This repositioning would exclude the Punto and Tipo from the product plan for the coming years.

DS or Alfa Romeo

The other big question that emerges from this merger is how the premium strategy will take shape. The current state of affairs for the Alfa Romeo and DS is quite complex. For instance, despiteDS Auto recording a sales increase of 8.2% to 43,700 units in September 2019, it is facing serious issues with its line-up. Apart from its two SUVs, the remaining products posted double-digit sales decreases and two of them are due to leave the market shortly.

FCA is also facing a number of challenges, with predictions for Alfa Romeo 2019 sales dropping to less than 100,000 units – this being approximately 25%-28% less than in 2018. This negative trend seems to be in juxtaposition to their product offensive that began in 2016, featuring the Giulia and Stelvio. Nonetheless, the lack of new products since 2017 has damaged the expected growth seen in 2018.

It seems that the new group will aim to position the brands in differing markets. For example, DS is likely to boost its Chinese operations through new products that could eventually arrive in Europe, while Alfa Romeo will focus on North America and Europe, receiving a lifeline from the incoming Tonale C-SUV. Nevertheless, this does not mean that either brand is safe from failure. If the strategy does not work, DS does not have a healthy heritage to support it.

Jeep to share its SUV DNA with Peugeot and Opel

Tavares is aware that Jeep is the crown jewel of FCA, however, despite new vehicles expected to hit South America and European markets in 2020, the brand needs more products. To achieve this, the best approach would be to share the costs with other mainstream brands – and the best candidates are Peugeot and Opel.

As Opel hopes to expand its presence outside of Europe, presenting itself as the German brand of the group, they could start developing SUVs in collaboration with Jeep. With Jeep positioned as the American off-road lifestyle-oriented brand, its SUVs could instead wear a mainstream European style under Peugeot and Opel brands. On top of this, we must remember that SUVs accounted for 40% of PSA+FCA’s passenger cars global sales in H1 2019, and Jeep represented 49% of its SUV volume during the same period.

Lancia and Vauxhall will survive

It is unlikely that the newly merged company will discontinue Lancia in Italy and Vauxhall in the UK, as they are not the only unique-country car brands in the world. For example, Holden is only available in Australia and New Zealand, Jetta operates purely in China, and Samsung exists solely in South Korea. In the case of Lancia, the brand could benefit from the new Fiat city-cars/SUVs replacing the current Ypsilon, one of the top-selling cars in Italy.

Secondo me i tedeschi della opel avrebbero fatto peggio.
Maserati analista arrivato in ritardo :-) :-)

Articolo interessante.

their sales decimated by the coronavirus outbreak, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group have postponed their shareholder meetings and are looking at ways to boost cash reserves ahead of their planned merger.

The two automakers have turned to their banks to secure much-needed cash, and FCA is considering debt guarantees that the Italian government approved on Monday to support local companies, a source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.

FCA, whose legal headquarters is in the Netherlands but operates factories in Italy, could qualify for the government program, which offers more than 400 billion euros ($433 million) worth of liquidity and bank loans to companies hit by the pandemic, the source said, adding that no decision had been made.

A spokesman for FCA declined to comment.

In December, PSA and FCA signed a memorandum of understanding that would create the world's fourth-largest carmaker, with shareholders of each group holding 50 percent in the new entity.

The crisis set off by the virus has virtually erased demand for new vehicles and disrupted supply chains, pushing automakers to temporarily halt most production.

In late March, FCA secured a credit line worth 3.5 billion euros, with an initial 12-month term that can be extended by six months. This added to existing credit facilities worth 7.7 billion euros.

However, FCA would need to cut its ordinary dividend if it decides to pursue state aid from Italy. The emergency decree says companies looking to apply for Italy-backed loans must refrain from approving dividend payments for a year.

FCA's decision to postpone the shareholders' meeting to late June has analysts speculating that its ordinary dividend worth 1.1 billion euros could be canceled or postponed.

"While the merger process is proceeding, the postponement of the AGM will raise markets' concerns of a potential cancellation of the ordinary dividend," said Monica Bosio, an analyst at Intesa Sanpaolo.

Martino De Ambroggi, an analyst at Equida, said that the most likely outcome is that both FCA and PSA cancel or postpone their ordinary dividends.

PSA, which proposed a similar 1.1 billion euro dividend, also decided to postpone its annual shareholders' meeting, to June 25. But the automaker is not expected to tap state funding, a source close to the company said.

The French automaker, which is led by CEO Carlos Tavares, said on Monday that it had agreed to new credit lines worth about 3 billion euros. It is sitting on undrawn credit facilities worth about 3 billion euros.

Dividend questioned

FCA’s share price has fallen around 45 percent since late February when the virus started spreading in northern Italy. PSA's stock is down 32 percent.

As part of the merger agreement, FCA is set to pay a 5.5 billion-euro special dividend to its investors. Bankers and analysts have questioned FCA's ability to pay such a windfall at a time when companies are looking to preserve cash.

A source close to the deal said that while both parties were still committed to the tie-up, they needed to see how the crisis evolved before deciding whether to renegotiate merger terms.

Analysts at Jefferies have said the merger is key to the two firms' long-term competitiveness but that some adjustments are "inevitable." They pointed to the special dividend, which is expected to be paid in early 2021, just before the deal closes.

A study by Alix Partners predicts that global auto sales could fall by 22 percent to 27 percent this year, a decline of 19 to 24 million fewer vehicles.

This means global automakers would be below break-even, losing more than 100 billion euros in cash flow globally, the study said, adding that for every month of idled production in Europe, automakers would lose 7 billion euros of cash flow.
