FCA to Expand Production Capacity in Michigan to Grow Core Brands, Electrify Jeep® Vehicles

$4.5 Billion to Build New Assembly Plant in Detroit and Add Production at Five Existing Michigan Facilities, Creating Nearly 6,500 Jobs

FCA total committed investments in the U.S. grow to nearly $14.5 billion since 2009, with nearly 30,000 jobs created to date
Investment would be next step in Company’s U.S. industrialization plan, announced in 2016 to expand Jeep® and Ram brands
Introduces two new Jeep-branded “white space” products in key market segments
Enables electrification of new Jeep models
$1.6 billion investment would convert Mack Avenue Engine Complex into manufacturing site for next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee and an all-new three-row full-size Jeep SUV, creating 3,850 new jobs
$900 million investment at Jefferson North to retool and modernize plant for continued production of Dodge Durango and next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee with 1,100 new jobs expected
Warren Truck 2017 investment increases to $1.5 billion for production of all-new Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, as well as continued assembly of Ram 1500 Classic with addition of 1,400 new jobs
All three assembly sites would also produce plug-in hybrid versions of their respective Jeep models with flexibility to build fully battery-electric models in the future
Sterling Stamping and Warren Stamping plants to receive more than $400 million total investment to support additional production, potentially creating about 80 new jobs at Sterling
$119 million investment to relocate Pentastar engine production currently at Mack I to the Dundee Engine Plant; production at Mack would end by Q3 2019
Projects contingent on land acquisition and the negotiation of development incentives with the cities of Detroit, Sterling Heights, Warren, Dundee and state of Michigan
City of Detroit has 60 days to deliver on commitments outlined in Memorandum of Understanding related to Mack and Jefferson North projects

February 26, 2019 , London - Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V. (NYSE: FCAU / MTA: FCA) confirmed today plans to invest a total of $4.5 billion in five of its existing Michigan plants, and to work with the city of Detroit and state of Michigan on building a new assembly plant within city limits. The move would increase capacity to meet growing demand for its Jeep® and Ram brands, including production of two new Jeep-branded white space products, as well as electrified models. The proposed projects would create nearly 6,500 new jobs.

The plant actions detailed in today’s announcement represent the next steps in a U.S. manufacturing realignment that FCA began in 2016. In response to a shift in consumer demand toward SUVs and trucks, the Company discontinued compact car production and retooled plants in Illinois, Ohio and Michigan to make full use of available capacity to expand the Jeep and Ram brands. Those actions have resulted in the recent launches of the award-winning all-new Jeep Wrangler and all-new Ram 1500, and the introduction of the newest member of the Jeep family, the all-new Jeep Gladiator, at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show.

“Three years ago, FCA set a course to grow our profitability based on the strength of the Jeep and Ram brands by realigning our U.S. manufacturing operations,” said Mike Manley, Chief Executive Officer, FCA N.V. “Today’s announcement represents the next step in that strategy. It allows Jeep to enter two white space segments that offer significant margin opportunities and will enable new electrified Jeep products, including at least four plug-in hybrid vehicles and the flexibility to produce fully battery-electric vehicles.”

The city of Detroit has 60 days to meet the terms of a Memorandum of Understanding, which requires the acquisition of property critical to the execution of the Mack project. The additional investments are subject to the successful negotiation and final approval of development packages with the state and other local governments.

Plant Investment Details
FCA would invest $1.6 billion to convert the two plants that comprise the Mack Avenue Engine Complex into the future assembly site for the next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, as well as an all-new three-row full-size Jeep SUV and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models, adding 3,850 new jobs to support production. The Company intends to start construction of the new Detroit facility by the end of Q2 2019 with the first three-row vehicles expected to roll off the line by the end of 2020, followed by the all-new Grand Cherokee in the first half of 2021.

Also as part of this announcement, the Jefferson North Assembly Plant would receive an investment of $900 million to retool and modernize the facility to build the Dodge Durango and next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee. FCA expects to create 1,100 new jobs at Jefferson North.

The reborn Mack facility would be the first new assembly plant to be built in the city of Detroit in nearly three decades. In 1991, Jefferson North was the last new assembly plant built in the city. When complete, Mack would join Jefferson North as the only automotive assembly plants to be located completely within the city limits of Detroit.

The Pentastar engines – the 3.6-, 3.2- and 3.0-liter – currently built at Mack I would be relocated to the Dundee Engine Plant as part of a $119 million investment. Pentastar production at Mack I would end by Q3 2019. Mack II has been idle since it ceased production of the 3.7-liter V-6 in September 2012.

FCA also confirms the investment at Warren Truck to retool for production of the all-new Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, announced in 2017, along with their electrified counterparts, would increase to $1.5 billion. Production is expected to launch in early 2021. In addition to the new Jeep models, the plant would continue building the Ram 1500 Classic, which is being extended to meet market demand. It is expected that 1,400 new jobs would be added. As a result of this investment announcement, production of the all-new Ram Heavy Duty will continue at its current location in Saltillo, Mexico.

To support the additional production, the Company’s Warren Stamping (Warren, Michigan) and Sterling Stamping (Sterling Heights, Michigan) plants would receive investments of $245 million and $160 million, respectively, with Sterling Stamping expected to add more than 80 new jobs.

This investment is part of the Company's capital spending plan presented in June 2018

Arriveranno versioni elettriche e plug in. Entro il 2022 sarà svelata il RAM pick up medio.

– Plug-in hybrid versions of the Jeep Renegade and Compass, the brand’s first two electrified models for Europe, could be exported to the U.S. if there is sufficient demand, said Fiat Chrysler Automobiles European head Piero Gorlier.

The two small crossovers were revealed at the auto show here.

Production of the Renegade plug-in hybrid will start before the end of 2019, while the Compass will follow in early 2020, said Jeff Hines, head of the Jeep brand for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Both the Renegade and Compass plug-in hybrids will have an electric motor coupled with a gasoline engine, starting with the four-cylinder, 1.3-liter engine launched in 2018. In full electric mode both will offer a 50-km (31-mile) range with a top speed of 130 kph (81 mph).

The Renegade power output will range from 187 hp to 236 hp, depending on the gasoline engine. It will accelerate from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in 7 seconds.

For both the Renegade and Compass, the combined emissions of carbon dioxide will be less than 50 grams per kilometer. Both feature an all-wheel-drive system where the rear wheels are powered by the electric motor only.

CO2 emission targets will drive a growing level of electrification, Hines said. That electrification, in turn, will provide more capability through enhanced all-wheel drive, he said, adding that the Renegade will be the “first real UV” in the small SUV segment.

The Renegade and Compass plug-in hybrids will be built in Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' plant in Melfi, southern Italy, which currently produces the Fiat 500X small crossover and the gasoline and diesel versions of the Renegade. Starting next year the factory also will produce all European versions of the Compass, which are currently imported from FCA's plant in Toluca, Mexico.

The Renegade and Compass plug-in hybrids could be exported to the U.S. if there is sufficient demand, said FCA's Europe head, Piero Gorlier.

The extra production is good news for the Melfi plant, where production of the Fiat Punto small car was terminated in mid-2018.

According to market researcher JATO Dynamics, the Compass was the most popular Jeep in Europe in 2018, with 74,740 units sold, up from 15,623 in 2017. It narrowly beat the Renegade, whose 73,275 units were up slightly from 72,238 sold in 2017. The Jeep brand as a whole posted a 56 percent sales gain to 166,586 units.

Bellissimi e interessanti grafici, dove li fanno così bene?

PSA Group approached Fiat Chrysler Automobiles this year about combining the two companies, but the Italian-American automaker rebuffed the overture, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Executives at the two companies are no longer talking, according to the report.

FCA executives don't like the idea because it would increase exposure to Europe's mature market, while the Agnelli family, with a controlling stake, isn't interested in a transaction financed with PSA stock, the newspaper reported.

A PSA offer would likely need to use equity for a transaction to keep debt from ballooning, since the automaker hasn't yet digested its acquisition of General Motors' European business.

FCA CEO Mike Manley has said he's not opposed to a deal that would make the company stronger.

"I want to find areas where cooperation — whether it is partnerships, whether it's joint ventures or whether it is deeper levels of equity cooperation that makes sense for us and whoever that is — [will] give better vehicles to our customers and a better return to our shareholders," Manley told reporters at the Geneva auto show this month. "I'm very open to it."

A combination of FCA and PSA, "from a volume perspective, would make sense," Richard Hilgert, senior equity analyst at Morningstar Inc., said this month.

Together, they would make almost 9 million vehicles a year, giving them the heft to compete with Volkswagen, Toyota Motor Corp. and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance in a way that neither can on its own, he said. This is particularly crucial in the small-car segments both are known for in Europe and South America.

And for PSA's Peugeot brand, planning a return to North America in 2026, Hilgert said FCA's U.S. retail network "would give them an opportunity to pitch to an established set of dealers."

PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles are exploring a partnership to share investments to build cars in Europe, according to people familiar with the talks.

The French carmaker and its Italian-American peer have been holding preliminary discussions to collaborate on a “super platform” -- the basic underpinning of a car model -- to reduce their investment costs in the highly competitive region, said the people who asked not to be named as the matter is private. Preliminary talks could be announced by the end of the first half, one of the people said.

ADVERTISEMENTSCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT
PSA Chief Executive Officer Carlos Tavares said earlier this month that his company is ready to seize opportunities for growth, less than a year after integrating the Opel and Vauxhall brands that it purchased from General Motors Co. Fiat Chrysler CEO Mike Manley said at the same time that he’d “clearly look into” a deal that would make the Italian-American carmaker stronger, including an alliance or a merger.

The partnership could eventually develop into a wider combination in the future, though the current focus is on the limited cooperation, two of the people said.

A spokesman for PSA declined to comment, and referred to comments Tavares made to the Wall Street Journal Saturday, where he said the company wasn’t targeting a “specific” partner and isn’t engaged in “deep” negotiations to find a tie-up.

‘Continuous Discussions’

“We have continuous discussions with our partners,” Tavares told the WSJ in response to a question about potential talks with Fiat. “There is no specific target — no specific, deep, ongoing negotiation.”

Fiat and Peugeot extended their cooperation on light-duty vans to include vehicles under the French manufacturer’s Opel and Vauxhall brands in February.

Carmakers are increasingly joining forces to share investments as the auto industry is facing a technological disruption driven by electric and self-driving cars. Stricter emission rules imposed by European regulators are also forcing the industry to shift away from traditional combustion engines.

Automakers are getting squeezed with valuations hovering at recession-like levels, while cash-rich Silicon Valley giants like Alphabet Inc. plot inroads into the industry to access data in future cars. With more signs that sales volume has peaked, Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen AG are working toward a broad partnership that would include commercial vehicles and autonomous driving, while BMW AG and Daimler AG are collaborating on a range of shared- and self-driving efforts.

Fiat Chrysler Chairman John Elkann shares former CEO Sergio Marchionne’s view that auto industry needs to consolidate to end duplication of investments. Marchionne said in his notorious "capital junky confession" speech in 2015 that the auto industry was wasting 2 billion euros ($2.2 billion) every week in product development and tooling costs which could be shared.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has agreed to pay Tesla hundreds of millions of euros so that the vehicles of Tesla are counted in its fleet to avoid fines for violating new European Union emission rules, the Financial Times reported on Sunday.

The step will let Fiat Chrysler offset carbon dioxide emissions from its cars against Tesla's electric cars, by bringing down its average figure to a permissible level, the paper said.

The report did not mention further financial details of the specific amount that Fiat Chrysler has agreed to pay Tesla.

Fiat Chrysler formed an open pool with Tesla on Feb. 25, the report added, citing a declaration with the European Commission.

Tesla and Fiat Chrysler did not immediately respond to a request by Reuters for comment on Sunday.
