LONDON -- Vauxhall, which is owned by PSA Group, will cut an extra 241 jobs from its Ellesmere Port plant in northwest England in the latest cuts at the site, deepening union concerns over the factory's future.

Vauxhall said in October last year it would cut about 400 out of the then 1,900 people at the factory. The company announced a further 250 jobs losses in January as PSA restructured the money-losing Opel/Vauxhall business it bought from General Motors in 2017.

"The restructuring is necessary to make it a competitive plant when compared to the benchmark," Vauxhall said in a statement.

Vauxhall builds the Astra Sports Tourer station wagon at Ellesmere Port and the brand has seen its UK sales fall 11 percent so far this year, faster than the overall decline of 7 percent in Europe's second-biggest autos market.

The automaker said the announcement was not related to Britain's imminent departure from the European Union.

PSA CEO Carlos Tavares said earlier this year that the French automaker will decide in 2020 whether to make fresh investment to keep the plant open.

Britain's biggest trade union, Unite, said it was seeking urgent assurances over the future of the site.

"Unite will not tolerate the death by a thousand cuts of Ellesmere Port and will leave no stone unturned in securing the future of the plant and its skilled workforce," said Unite regional coordinating officer Mick Chalmers.

venture factory in Kolin, Czech Republic, which makes the Citroen C1, the Peugeot 108 and the Toyota Aygo minicars.

PSA and Toyota will also expand their partnership in light commercial vehicles. Starting at the end of 2019, PSA will supply Toyota with a small van from its plant in Vigo, Spain, which this year has started producing the newest generation of the Citroen Berlingo, Opel Combo and Peugeot Partner, in both commercial and passenger variants. PSA has made the Toyota Proace medium van at its factory in Hordain, France, since 2012.

Such collaborations are common in the light commercial vehicle segment. Toyota said in a news release that it would share the cost of developing and industrializing the new small van.

Toyota will take ownership of the Kolin factory in January 2021. The joint venture -- Toyota Peugeot Citroen Automobile Czech, or TPCA -- was started in 2002, and an opt-out clause allowed either automaker to review the arrangement. The factory will become a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Europe, which has seven other plants in Europe.

The news was first reported by the French financial newspaper Les Echos, which also reported that PSA would not renew the C1 and 108 when production ends in 2021.

Toyota did not specify future production plans at the Czech factory, which produced 199,000 vehicles in 2017. The company said that it would continue to produce the current models, and "intends to continue production and employment in the future."

"Our commitment to the Kolin plant demonstrates Toyota’s philosophy of producing cars where we sell them and our long-term manufacturing presence in Europe," Didier Leroy, Toyota Motor Europe vice president, said in a news release.

Small SUV

The Kolin factory has an annual capacity of 300,000 units with production split between the Aygo, C1 and 208. Industry sources said Toyota could build a small SUV or crossover at Kolin. Toyota said earlier this year that it would add a B (small)-segment SUV based on the Yaris subcompact hatchback at its plant in Valenciennes, France, with an investment of hundreds of millions of euros.

PSA has not said whether it would replace the 108 and C1, which are built on Toyota's B-Zero platform. Citroen CEO Linda Jackson told Automotive News Europe in October that she thought the segment "would evolve."

"I think in the future we’ll need to think about what those customers want -- most are urban, so they’ll want electric, but will they be wanting that size of car, or a different type?" she said.

Groupe PSA Poissy plant to produce an additional vehicle
download-pdfdownload-imagedownload-allWed, 20/02/2019 - 13:30

The allocation of a new Opel/Vauxhall B-SUV* was made possible by the initiatives taken to enhance performance at the plant
Investments realised since 2016 have made of Poissy plant the first one of Groupe PSA to assemble on the multi-energy CMP** platform

The Poissy plant has been working on its transformation project since 2016 to strengthen its competitiveness. The Groupe PSA manufacturing concept of multi-vehicle and multi-energy assembly line has been implemented with success. The new production line with the new multi-energy CMP platform is already operational with the launch this year of DS 3 Crossback in both electric and internal combustion versions. The resulting improvement of its manufacturing performance enabled the Poissy plant to secure production of the new Opel/Vauxhall B-SUV model that will join its new production line.

The advanced process of production on the same line of ICE*** and BEV**** for vehicles based on CMP platform, as well as PHEV and ICE models in other plants for EMP2 platform, is a key asset of Groupe PSA to remain flexible with energy transition and accompany customers shift in demand.

“Poissy employees are proud to lead the way this year with the first implementation of this state of the art manufacturing process for our Group. Having an additional vehicle is the clear recognition of our performance improvement and I would like to thank all the teams that created the conditions to make it happen” said Frédéric Przybylski, who manages the Poissy plant. “It’s also a big responsibility and we are committed to achieve the highest levels of efficiency and quality for the satisfaction of our customers.”

“Our multi-vehicle, multi-energy production advanced concept, that we are developing accross our plants, will enhance our agility in the context of energy transition. This is a key asset that will make the difference in the coming years and a strong lever to support our electrification offensive” added Yann Vincent, Executive Vice President, Manufacturing & Supply Chain. “We’re right on track to meet our objective of having an electrified version of all our new vehicles starting in 2019 and offering electric or plug-in hybrid versions for 100% of our models for our 5 brands by 2025.”

PARIS -- PSA Group raised its medium-term profit guidance on Tuesday after reporting record full-year sales and earnings, buoyed by the success of its Peugeot 3008 and 5008 SUV models.

PSA's recurring operating income jumped 43 percent to 5.69 billion euros ($6.46 billion) in 2018, giving a 7.7 percent profit margin, helped by its acquisition of Opel-Vauxhall. Sales advanced 19 percent to 74.03 billion.

The financial performance "demonstrates the ability of our group to deliver a profitable and recurring growth", said CEO Carlos Tavares.

The Paris-based group said its 4.5 percent average margin goal for the 2019-2021 period would henceforth include the less profitable Opel-Vauxhall division, effectively raising the benchmark.

Strong sales of its latest Peugeot SUVs have helped PSA to build on its steady recovery from near-bankruptcy in 2013-14. Tavares is applying the same discipline at the Opel division acquired from General Motors in 2017.

The Peugeot-Citroen-DS (PCD) division, housing its legacy French brands, reported a record 8.4 percent operating margin as sales rose 18.9 percent despite adverse currency moves and higher raw-material costs. Opel-Vauxhall (OV) recorded a 4.7 percent margin on sales of 18.31 billion euros.

Analysts had expected group recurring operating income of 5.61 billion euros on revenue of 74.76 billion, based on the median of 10 estimates polled by Infront Data for Reuters.

Tavares finalmente vuole rivedere la strategia internazionale: Peugeot sbarcherà in Nord America, Citroën in Cina, Opel in Sud America e in Russia.

Serve aggiungere altro? No, non serve.

small to satisfy the global ambitions of Chief Executive Officer Carlos Tavares.

The French maker of Peugeot, Citroen and Opel cars is seeking a deal that will expand its footprint outside of Europe, according to people familiar with the matter. Tavares has met with advisers to consider potential collaborations or mergers, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the matter is private.

The deliberations are very preliminary and potential targets haven’t recently been approached, the people said. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is attractive to PSA for its exposure to the U.S. and its premium Jeep brand, but Tavares also sees General Motors Co. as a good fit and Jaguar Land Rover as a possibility, the people said, while cautioning that such deals would be difficult to reach.

A spokesman for PSA declined to comment on any specific plans, declined to make Tavares available ahead of the Geneva car show this week. He referred to the CEO’s comments at an earnings press conference last week, when Tavares, asked about plans for about 9 billion euros ($10.2 billion) in net cash, said that strategic opportunities were “open for discussion,” while cautioning the money would also help in a downturn.

“We think we are in a good position both in terms of running the operations and also in terms of strategic vision” with regard to electrification, autonomous driving and mobility, Tavares said on Feb. 26. “We have done our homework, and we think we are on the right path.”

Spokesmen for Fiat Chrysler and JLR owner Tata Motors Ltd. declined to comment. A GM spokesman didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

PSA Group Plots Comeback in North America With Peugeot Cars

PSA shares pared gains after Bloomberg reported on the plans and were up 0.9 percent at 4:24 p.m. in Paris. Fiat Chrysler was down 0.9 percent in Milan. GM shares traded as much as 0.4 percent lower before midday in New York.

Manufacturers are under intense pressure to combine efforts on the slowing market for combustion-driven vehicles, to save cash for expensive new technologies like electrification, autonomous driving and app-based services. With more signs that sales volume has peaked, Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen AG are working toward a broad partnership that would include commercial vehicles and autonomous driving, while BMW AG and Daimler AG are collaborating on a range of shared- and self-driving efforts.

Tavares, who in five years at the helm has turned around the flagship Peugeot brand and GM castoff Opel, still relies on Europe for more than 80 percent of PSA’s unit sales. A U.S. partner would potentially further Tavares’s plan, announced last week, to bring the Peugeot brand back to North America. The company, which makes the 308 compact and 3008 SUV, plans to ship vehicles in from Europe or China from 2026. An alliance could pave the way for local production without a prohibitive investment.

A deal would also help PSA build scale. The French company sold 3.9 million cars last year, enough to qualify as a volume producer but nowhere near the 10 million-plus that VW, Toyota Motor Corp. and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance churned out, giving them added leverage to squeeze out costs.

Fiat, GM, JLR

Italian American carmaker Fiat Chrysler is focused on steadying the management team and operations since former CEO Sergio Marchionne passed away in July, the people said. It hasn’t held any recent discussions with PSA regarding a combination, they said. Fiat and Peugeot extended their van cooperation to include vehicles under the French manufacturer’s Opel and Vauxhall brands in February.

GM has little interest in the European market, two of the people said. Under CEO Mary Barra, the U.S. automaker has been shedding low-margin businesses and investing in self-drive technology and mobility services instead. Merging with or acquiring PSA would be a complete reversal -- and is something GM could have pursued when it sold Opel to the French company two years ago, said one of the people.

Despite the obstacles, analysts have started to speculate on options for PSA. At J.P. Morgan Securities, analysts including Jose Asumendi suggest a European passenger-car partnership with Ford or a cooperation deal with JLR as potential solutions. Jefferies International Ltd. analyst Philippe Houchois, in a note on Monday, also suggested JLR as a possibility.

Bloomberg News reported last week that Tata is exploring options for JLR -- including the sale of a minority stake in the struggling British carmaker. The U.S. is its biggest market, while China, which has slumped recently, is still among its largest. Both the Jaguar sports car and luxury Land Rover nameplates would bring PSA the cachet it’s seeking to layer over its efficient production platform, where Tavares has lowered costs, and has made plans for electric cars.

Tata said last week that there’s “no truth to rumors that Tata Motors is looking to divest its stake in JLR,” while declining to elaborate.

“Given high earnings, the equity story is shifting to strategic opportunities,” he said.

Dovessi scommettere 5 cent, direi JLR

Psa potrebbe aiutare FCA in Europa e ricevere aiuto in Nord America.
Rimangono tutte speculazioni.

Ariquoto sulle nuove alleanze.

Citroen is counting on design and lower-cost models to break into the tough market of India.

The French brand plans to launch sales in India no later than the end of 2021. Citroen's move into India is part of a strategy by parent PSA Group to reduce its dependence on sales in Europe, with Peugeot returning to North America and Opel making a push into Russia.

As part of that strategy, PSA is creating a range of lower-cost vehicles for international markets, similar to Renault's Global Access program for affordable cars such as the Logan, sold under the Dacia or Renault brand depending on the market.

Citroen's models for India will be the first in the lower-cost range, CEO Linda Jackson told Automotive News Europe.

Jackson declined to give further details, except to say that they would be "appropriate and relevant for the Indian customers."

Small SUVs such as the Renault Kwid have been successful in India, whose buyers prefer hatchbacks and crossovers to sedans.

Local ventures

Citroen's cars for India will be built as part of two joint ventures that PSA set up in 2017 with CK Birla Group, one of which is a manufacturing partnership with Hindustan Motor Financing Corporation for the assembly and distribution of PSA vehicles in India. At the time of the announcement, PSA said it would produce up to 100,000 vehicles annually.

The other, PSA Avtec Powertrain, has just started production of engines and gearboxes at a factory near Bangalore, with a capacity of 300,000 engines and 200,000 gearboxes annually.

PSA CEO Carlos Tavares said the Avtec plant had just started exporting transmissions, and was "extremely, extremely profitable." Tavares said the savings from producing in India had already made that joint venture self-sustaining, Tavares said at the Geneva auto show earlier this month.

PSA has tried in recent years to break into India. A joint venture with Premier to build Peugeot 309s from kits foundered in the late 1990s, as did a similar one with Tata to build Peugeot 307s. A plan to invest 650 million euros in a factory in Gujarat fell apart in 2012 amid PSA Group's financial issues.

Ambassador nameplate

As part of the CK Birla arrangement, PSA also acquired the rights to the Ambassador brand nameplate. The Ambassador was a Morris Oxford-based sedan produced for decades by Hindustan Motor, and more than half a million are still on Indian roads today, mostly as taxis.

Jackson said Citroen and PSA were considering whether and how to use the Ambassador name. "I want to be very careful how we use the name because you need to be credible when you use it and not just assume that everybody will say, 'Yes,' that's a good idea."

The potential for growth in India is huge, Jackson said.

"All of the forecasts for India say the market is expanding exponentially," she said, with passenger car sales of about 3.6 million vehicles in 2018 expected to grow to six million by 2025, which would make it the third-largest market after China and the United States.

IHS Markit projects annual growth of 7 percent and a total passenger car and light-commercial vehicle market of 9.5 million units by 2030.

Four brands -- Maruti Suzuki, Tata, Hyundai and Mahindra and Mahindra -- together have more than 80 percent of the Indian market, with the remaining 20 percent held by a mix of European, Asian and North American brands, many of which have seen their fortunes rise and fall.

Design advantage

Jackson said Citroen would stand out with its design, as well as local production and a focus on initial quality and after-sales service.

"We think that Citroen's unique styling offers something slightly different, and it could be a good way for us to have a faster impact on the market," she said.

Puneet Gupta, associate director of automotive forecasting at IHS Markit in India, said Citroen had a chance to succeed but that it is hard to compete with the top brands.

Existing brands "understand the country very well, they can price their products very well, and they have a solid network base,” he said.

Still, there is room for new players as the market grows and space opens up for electrification, a government priority to reduce dependence on foreign oil, Gupta said. “That doesn't mean that it will be a cakewalk; it will be very tough and challenging, but nevertheless there are real disruptions,” he said.

Anil Sharma, associate director for automotive and transportation at Marketsandmarkets Research, said India’s leading automakers were able to quickly respond to technical innovations, so Citroen would have to build “a strong and evenly spread product pipeline, and develop positive word of mouth through after sales service.”

“There is certainly some space left for new brands and OEMs in the Indian market,” he said. ”However, a lot will depend on which segments it decides to play into as well as on its price, positioning, and sourcing strategies.”

Sharma suggested that Citroen’s best chance is to focus on low-volume, high-price models which primarily sell in urban markets. “Competing head-on with the established players in the mass-market segments is unlikely to yield positive results,” he said.

Jackson said it was important for Citroen to listen to what Indian customers wanted rather than try to impose European tastes or designs on the market.

"We need to have the mindset that we are going into India for Indians, and that's why we have a local team that is defining exactly what should be in vehicles in terms of technology," she said. "It may sound a bit blunt. It's an important point, because there is sometimes an arrogance of Europeans that says, 'I've been very successful in Europe, so I'm going to take exactly the same product and put it into India.' Well, that's not going to work."

PSA Group CEO Carlos Tavares has the backing of the Peugeot family to seek more acquisitions for the automaker. Tavares is reportedly seeking a deal that will expand the company's footprint with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles or Jaguar Land Rover seen as potential candidates.

The Peugeot family would support a new acquisition if an opportunity presented itself, Robert Peugeot, the president of Peugeot family holding company FFP told French daily Les Echos in an interview.

"We supported the Opel project from the start. If another opportunity comes up, we will not be braking, Carlos knows that," Robert Peugeot said. There were no concrete projects at the moment, he said. "The Opel operation is an exceptional success, we didn't think that the recovery could be as fast," he told the paper.

The Peugeot family is one of PSA's three main shareholders, along with the French government's investment bank Bpifrance and China's Dongfeng Motor. Each has a 12.23 percent stake.

Les Echos reported that Fiat Chrysler is often mentioned as a candidate for possible consolidation operations. "With them, as with others, the planets could be aligned," Robert Peugeot said.

Robert Peugeot: PSA's Opel acquisition has been "an exceptional success."
The major investments required for emissions reduction, electrification of vehicles and research into autonomous vehicles means that midsize automakers need to look for economies of scale in order to compete with sector giants such as Renault-Nissan, Volkswagen Group or Toyota.

PSA acquired the Opel-Vauxhall business from General Motors in 2017 and has boosted its profitability.

Earlier this month Bloomberg reported that Tavares has met with advisers to consider potential collaborations or mergers. The deliberations are very preliminary and potential targets have not recently been approached, sources told Bloomberg.

Fiat Chrysler is attractive to PSA for its exposure to the U.S. and its Jeep brand, but Tavares also sees General Motors as a good fit and Jaguar Land Rover as a possibility, the people said.

At the Geneva auto show, Fiat Chrysler CEO Mike Manley said FCA would look at "any deal that would make Fiat stronger."
