Volkswagen Group will create joint ventures and help finance battery production to persuade skeptical cell suppliers to back its aggressive push for mass producing electric vehicles, VW purchasing chief Stefan Sommer told Reuters.

VW has said it will buy 50 billion euros ($56.57 billion) worth of battery cells and has identified Sweden's Northvolt, South Korea's SKI, LG Chem and Samsung SDI as well as China's CATL as strategic partners.

"Not every supplier is convinced that electric mobility will come on such a large scale. You need to spend more time convincing them to invest in the auto industry," Sommer told Reuters.

VW said that by 2025, it needs 150 gigawatt hours' worth of battery production capacity in Europe and another 150 in Asia. By 2030 this figure will double.

"These producers need to prioritize between making a new smartphone or building a new battery factory. So even the battery cell producers are asking: will production volumes scale up quickly?" Sommer said.

The automaker is retooling 16 factories to build electric vehicles and plans to start producing 33 different electric cars under the Skoda, Audi, VW and Seat brands by mid-2023.

Customers have been slow to adopt electric vehicles in large numbers because of the limited operating range and long battery recharging times, and because of a lack of charging infrastructure. This has unnerved potential suppliers.

"When it comes to normal components, suppliers have the opportunity to sell to other carmakers, if VW buys less. But with electromobility we all know: if it does not work for VW, then it won't work for others," Sommer said.

This is why VW provides suppliers with finance for tooling and shares the risk of installing new production capacity by making new factories a joint venture.

"The tendency is to do joint ventures. The suppliers are still asking themselves, is this market going to take off or not? Meanwhile they realize it is an opportunity," Sommer said.

Joint ventures have the advantage of giving VW an early insight into manufacturing progress as a new plant is erected. "We have built up our own expertise, which we share with suppliers, which helps when we build a new plant. It gives us an early indication if there are teething problems," Sommer said.

"We have not been able to build as many cars as we wanted to. Our supplier is not delivering the numbers that we need."

From 2021 Volkswagen will use electric battery cells using a composition of nickel, manganese and cobalt in a ratio of 8:1:1, Sommer said, adding that one supplier was still using a ratio of 6:2:2.

For the Chinese market, Volkswagen sees potential for using lithium Iron based batteries, known as LFP. These have lower energy density than NMC cells, but Chinese drivers tend to stay within large cities and do not travel long distances by car.

"The necessity for a long operating range is less important in China," Sommer said.

Solid state electric battery cells will replace NMC cells and become mass production ready in the second half of the 2020's, Sommer said.

"Solid state cells can be made in existing battery factories. It will be the same producers and the same factories where solid state batteries are made," Sommer said adding that round 60 percent of the tools can be reused for next generation cells.

Volkswagen may even build its own battery cell manufacturing plants in China, Sommer said, but said that for now the automaker is relying on its Chinese joint venture partners FAW, SAIC and JAC to find suitable battery suppliers.

Volkswagen AG and Ford Motor Co. will cooperate on electric and self-driving car technology, sharing costs on a global scale to take a major step forward in the industry’s disruptive transformation.

VW will invest $2.6 billion in Ford’s autonomous-car partner Argo AI in a deal that values the operation at more than $7 billion, the two manufacturers said Friday in a joint statement in New York. This includes $1 billion in funding and VW contributing its Audi $1.6 billion Autonomous Intelligent Driving unit.

“While Ford and Volkswagen remain independent and fiercely competitive in the marketplace, teaming up and working with Argo AI on this important technology allows us to deliver unmatched capability, scale and geographic reach,” Ford Chief Executive Officer Jim Hackett said.

Unprecedented shifts facing the auto industry are forcing players to consider new partnerships and potential consolidation. VW, the world’s top automaker, offers the industry’s most ambitious roll-out of electric models, while Ford, also in the top 10, is developing advanced self-driving technology with Argo.

For VW, the Argo investment offers an opportunity to potentially catch up with Alphabet Inc.’s Waymo, and General Motors Co.’s Cruise unit. Road tests and accumulating huge amounts of data are critical for the further development of self-driving cars, and few apart from Waymo are equipped to do it alone.

“It took a while to get this deal done, but it’s because we actually sorted out a lot of the hard problems,” Bryan Salesky, Argo AI’s co-founder and CEO, said in an interview. “We have a clear line of sight to production, vehicle supply and we have clear line of sight to where we want to go to market and how.”

Besides sharing costs for the development of self-driving cars, Ford will use VW’s electric-car underpinnings that form to backbone of the most aggressive rollout of electric cars in the industry with Volkswagen spending some 30 billion euros ($34 billion). Adding more vehicles to production lines would help gain scale and save costs, and offer Ford a platform to better comply with tougher rules on carbon-dioxide emissions in Europe.

Ford will build at least one mass-market battery car in Europe starting in 2023 and deliver more than 600,000 European vehicles based on VW’s platform, dubbed MEB, over six years. A second electric model for Europe is “under discussion,” it said.

Driverless Startup Argo AI's Mission To Save The Future Of Ford
Bryan Salesky
Teaming up with its U.S. peer is one of the key initiatives of VW Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess to overhaul the German industrial giant. Both sides reiterated on Friday the tie-up does not include entering equity ties between Ford and VW.

For Ford, a deal with VW fits with CEO Jim Hackett’s $11 billion overhaul of the company, which includes exiting the slow-selling sedan market in the U.S., shifting to focus on commercial vehicles in Europe and investing in electric-truck startup Rivian Automotive Inc. Geographically, the companies complement each other, with Ford strong in the U.S. and VW a leader in Europe and China.

“Our global alliance is beginning to demonstrate even greater promise , and we are continuing to look at other areas on which we might collaborate,” VW CEO Diess said.

Volkswagen will end production of the Golf SportWagen and Golf Alltrack wagons at the end of 2019, leaving the brand's U.S. dealers wagonless for the first time since 1965.

The slow-selling two-wheel and all-wheel-drive wagons are victims of the growth of crossovers, which now account for more than half of Volkswagen's sales in the U.S. The brand plans to add three crossovers over the next three years: the Atlas Cross Sport, the ID Crozz battery-electric vehicle and a subcompact crossover expected to arrive in 2021.

Crossovers "have definitely assumed the mantle of family haulers from the station wagons and minivans we remember from our childhoods," Volkswagen of America CEO Scott Keogh said in a statement. "But as we look towards the future, both our expanded [crossover] lineup and the upcoming ID family of electric vehicles will bring the opportunity to combine the style and space people want in a variety of ways."

Both wagons have been built at the automaker's plant in Puebla, Mexico. The same plant also produced the Beetle, which ended production this month.

Through the first six months of the year, Volkswagen said it sold just 5,123 SportWagens and Alltracks in the U.S., down 36 percent from the previous year.

Station wagons have been a staple of Volkswagen's U.S. lineup, beginning with the 1600 Squareback in 1965. The brand previously offered wagon versions of the larger Jetta and Passat before launching the Golf SportWagen for the 2015 model year.

In compenso arriveranno 3 suv

1) Atlas sport 2019
2) Id crozz 2020
3) Tharu 2021

Audi Almost Cheapened Out On The Next A4, Thought About Basing It On MQB Platform

BY MICHAEL GAUTHIER | POSTED ONAUGUST 5, 2019 10

Audi introduced the facelifted A4 earlier this year, but details are already starting to emerge about the next-generation model.
According to Automobile Magazine, the redesigned car is codenamed the B10 and is expected to arrive in 2022 or 2023.

That isn’t too surprising, as the current model was introduced at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, but the report claims Audi flirted with the idea of a bargain basement redesign. In the wake of the costly dieselgate scandal, the automaker was reportedly looking for ways to cut costs and explored basing the next-generation A4 on the MQB platform that underpins an assortment of models such as the Volkswagen Golf.

2020 Audi A4 4

The switch would have saved the company over a $1 billion (£822 / €892 million), but Audi insiders reportedly fought to keep the model on the MLB platform. They eventually won out and it appears this was for the best as one source told the publication the MQB-based design proposals simply “looked okay” as they had proportions that were “clearly those of front-wheel-drive cars with a dash-to-axle ratio similar to the A3.”

The MLB-based proposals were significantly better looking and reportedly received a standing ovation. The resulting car supposedly looks like a “shorter and sportier A6.”

Little else is known about the upcoming A4, but it appears the company shifted cost cuts elsewhere. Audi has already confirmed the TT will be dropped and replaced by a “new emotive model in the same price range,” but that appears to be just the tip of the iceberg.

Also Read: Audi Is Killing The TT, Will Replace It With An Emotional EV

While nothing is official, the publication suggests the A3 and A5 Convertibles will be merged together and the resulting vehicle will be based on the MQB platform. It could also spawn “various iterations of a compact coupe.”

Likewise, the A5 and A7 Sportback are rumored to be replaced by a single five-door hatchback. However, it would be based on the MLB platform.

The A8 is also rumored to be in jeopardy, but it could survive by becoming more closely aligned with the Porsche Panamera. That being said, the company appears to be favoring replacing the model with an all-new A9 flagship which would reportedly spawn a “Q9 e-tron grand coupe.”

Bugatti has been going back and forth regarding the launch of an SUV, and the latest info, coming from CEO Stephan Winkelmann himself, isn’t that enlightening as to whether or not they’re going to make it.
In a sit-down with AutomobileMag, Winkelmann confirmed that the design of the SUV is complete. However, the board of management has yet to approve it, despite receiving positive feedback from potential customers.

“The design is done”, said Winkelmann when asked about the fast SUV. “Some potential customers have seen it, and they liked it. One or two influential people in Wolfsburg were complimentary about it. But at this point, there is no budget and no decision.”

Also Read: Chiron’s Top Speed Run Is Not A Priority, Bugatti CEO Says

So, why did they choose to go down the crossover lane instead of, say, a super saloon or a hypercar with an electrified powertrain? “Because crossovers are in strong demand. So far, nobody is doing a high-performance, high-end luxury CUV. Because of the battery situation, it’s too early for an electric hypercar”, Winkelmann explained.

“Having said that, the more generously packaged CUV would almost certainly be battery-powered. With the Galibier Concept, Bugatti has in 2011 demonstrated that a super luxury sedan is compatible with our portfolio. But time has moved on, and I’m skeptical that a sedan can generate enough volume in today’s commercial environment. After all, we’re not talking 100 cars a year here, but 600 to 800.”

The SUV isn’t the only big news from Bugatti, who might also decide to build a meaner version of the Chiron to crack the 500 km/h (311 mph) barrier.

In spite of previously denying a top speed run or the development of the rumored Chiron SS (SuperSport), Winkelmann admitted that “it is still a possibility”. However, “there are quite a few ifs involved, like if someone is willing to supply suitable tires, or if the return on investment meets the target.” They won’t turn to electricity for the extra power, though, at least not now.

What the future holds for the Chiron is still unknown, but some sort of evolution is being planned. Bugatti’s CEO left the door open for a number of options, including more power, less weight and new body styles. The only thing that’s certain is that it will stay with us for quite some time, as “we may stretch that cycle via an interim update”.

A drop top version isn’t being ruled out either, although “if the roof must come off, this can only be done properly, with a reengineered and much stiffer monocoque”, said the exec. “So, let’s wait and see.”
