- Volkswagen Group will build the next-generation VW Passat and Skoda Superb midsize model lines at a new plant in Turkey.

The 1-billion-euro ($1.09 billion) factory will have a maximum annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles and create about 4,000 jobs, both at the plant and surrounding suppliers, according to an internal document seen by Automotive News Europe.

The factory will be located in Manisa, 40 km (25 miles) northeast of Izmir on Turkey's western coast. The production start is scheduled for 2022.

VW picked Turkey for the factory because of "positive macroeconomic conditions" including an 80 million-strong population that rivals Germany's in size and its location amid growth markets, according to the company document.

A VW spokesman would not comment on the details of the plant, saying only that the company was in the "final stages of negotiations."

The plant will serve future growth of surrounding markets, especially in eastern Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

The VW brand will operate the factory. About two-thirds of the 300,000 production volume will be for the Passat.

The factory will allow VW to move Passat production from Emden, Germany, and turn Emden into a factory building only electric cars. It will also give Skoda much-needed extra capacity at its plant in Kvasiny, where it builds the Superb.

VW had looked at sites in eastern Europe for the plant, narrowing the choice to Turkey and Bulgaria.

Turkey has a relatively low car density of about 150 cars per 1,000 inhabitants as well as a qualified workforce and a well-developed supplier structure.

Importantly, the country also is a key destination for the Passat sedan, which struggled after a plunge in the value of the Turkish lira.

In the first seven months, Turkey's domestic car market dropped by nearly half to 212,605 vehicles. Two years earlier 481,982 vehicles were sold over the same period.

Experts say producing locally as a hedge against currency fluctuations is the most cost-effective way of servicing demand in Turkey.

Volkswagen Group is in talks with other manufacturers on sharing the key technology underpinning its future Porsche and Audi electric cars as it seeks to build scale and spread development costs.

“There’s definitely interest,” Ulrich Widmann, head of development at Audi for the joint engineering project, said at a press briefing in Munich. “We’re having conversations. Sharing technology to generate scale effects is the only way to achieve the turnaround in electric cars, both economically and ecologically.”

Widmann declined to identify manufacturers who have shown interest in adopting the so-called Premium Platform Electric (PPE) underpinnings, which are being developed by Porsche and Audi as the basis for their full-electric vehicles starting in 2021.

“Given the huge research and development investment required for the transition to battery-electric vehicles, many smaller luxury names could be interested including Aston Martin, McLaren and Maserati,” Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Michael Dean said. “You couldn’t rule out BMW and Mercedes-Benz, which would provide a German premium solution,” he added.

VW is making an unprecedented push to dethrone Tesla as the leader of premium electric cars while at the same time keeping at bay traditional rivals that include Toyota Motor and General Motors. VW’s mass-market electric technology will debut with the namesake brand’s ID3 hatchback.

Deals to share electric expertise are already advancing, with Ford Motor agreeing earlier this year to use VW’s main electric-car platform for a high-volume car in Europe. The pact is worth between $10 billion and $20 billion over six years and the manufacturers are in talks over adding a second model that would be based on VW technology.

Tesla challenger

Audi plans to launch 30 electrified vehicles by 2025, two-thirds of them will be full-electric models. The timeline is part of the effort by VW Group’s largest profit contributor to electrify its entire lineup, including compact models such as the A3.

Following the delayed start of Audi’s e-tron, based on tweaked technology from the brand’s combustion-engine underpinnings, the manufacturer will tap the Porsche Taycan’s J1 platform to introduce the high-performance e-tron GT toward the end of 2020. Audi’s Q4 e-tron will be based on another platform, the MEB, and produced starting in 2021 in Zwickau, Germany, alongside the ID3.

Audi’s presentation in Munich included a thinly veiled challenge to Tesla in the form of a futuristic design concept for a midsize sedan that could be launched “after 2021,” according to design chief Marc Lichte. He declined to comment on the exact timing and price, but the presentation left little doubt about the strategic importance of the project and that Tesla’s Model 3 is the prime target.

Still, Audi is struggling to reverse declining sales and risks falling further behind German rivals Mercedes and BMW if it doesn’t turn the corner soon. Talks with labor unions over cost cuts and the location of future car production have been dragging on for months.

Emissions tests

The difficulties of complying with more complex emission tests that took effect last year have weighed on the manufacturer and labor officials have sharpened rhetoric against CEO Bram Schot. Parent VW could ill-afford a decline in Audi -- a cash cow within the group -- pledging to revive profits through 15 billion euros ($16.4 billion) in savings by 2022.

Earlier this year, Schot mapped out plans to cease making Audi’s iconic TT coupe and replace it with a battery-powered model. The next version of its flagship A8 sedan could also go emissions free.
Audi is also mulling an end to the $170,000 R8 supercar as it funnels spending into the rollout of 20 full-electric cars by 2025. Sales of electrified vehicles, including hybrids, are forecast to account for 40 percent of deliveries by then.

Audi is targeting slightly higher deliveries and revenue this year, and an operating profit margin between 7 percent and 8.5 percent. That should shift to between 9 percent and 11 percent as early as next year, helped by a sales reorganization.

Manager Magazin prevedeva almeno 15.000 posizioni in eccesso.

Volkswagen AG is weighing options for its Lamborghini supercar brand, as the German manufacturer moves ahead with an overhaul aimed at more than doubling its market value and getting ahead of an expected industry shakeout, according to people familiar with the matter.

The options VW is mulling include a sale or stock listing, said the people, who asked not to be named because the deliberations are confidential and no decisions have been made. Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess plans to focus future expansion on the group’s main global brands -- VW, Porsche and Audi -- in a push to channel resources more efficiently and avoid duplicated efforts.

A Volkswagen representative declined to comment. The German automaker’s American depositary receipts climbed as much as 5.7% to $17.84 in New York trading.

Lamborghini’s stretch from supercars to roomier sport utility vehicles probably has helped boost its valuation to about $11 billion, making it a viable candidate for an initial public offering, analysts at Bloomberg Intelligence estimated in August. Sales of the Urus SUV have soared since its introduction in mid-2018. A redesigned Aventador and new hybrid supercar slated to hit the market next year may help boost margins beyond 30%, BI’s Michael Dean and Gillian Davis wrote in a report.

Diess’s Target

Investors have long urged Volkswagen, the world’s biggest automaker, to free up assets whose value is subsumed within a cumbersome structure that includes everything from Italian supercars to motorcycles and heavy trucks. While Ferrari NV, once part of Fiat Chrysler, is now worth about $30 billion, VW’s powerful labor unions have stood in the way of similar moves in Germany.

Diess, who took the helm in April 2018, has shown some success, completing an IPO of the Traton truck unit earlier this year, and has gained backing for the planned sales of units that make large diesel engines and transmissions. He’s also forged a broad alliance with Ford Motor Co. on commercial vehicles and electric-car and self-driving technology.

The 60-year-old CEO often emphasizes the urgency of maximizing VW’s value as it contends with a costly technology transition, and recently key members of VW’s founding Porsche-Piech clan have voiced support. He’s targeting a market value for Volkswagen of 200 billion euros ($220 billion), the people said, from about 81 billion euros now. His efforts are aimed at helping VW defy the auto industry’s current gloom and keep both existing peers and new rivals from the technology industry at bay.

In a Post-WeWork IPO World, New Age Auto Startups Are Now at Risk

In intense debates earlier this year, VW’s top management decided against pursuing the sale of units like Bugatti for now, partly because it was unclear if sub-scale assets could be divested without paying cash on top, according to one person. Still, smaller nameplates might face reshuffling going forward.

VW has started preparations to fold Lamborghini into a separate legal entity and the process might conclude toward the end of next year, according to the people.

Volkswagen Group has postponed the final decision whether to build a car plant in Turkey, a company spokesman said, amid international criticism of the country's military operation in Syria and concerns about potential reputational fallout.

"We are carefully monitoring the current situation and look with concern at current developments," a company spokesman said on Tuesday.

Earlier this month, VW established a subsidiary in Turkey's western Manisa province, while the company said that it was still in the final stages of negotiation and that it had not made a final decision on the factory.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday that she told Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan that the offensive must be stopped because it risked creating a humanitarian crisis.

European Union countries agreed on Monday to limit arms exports to Turkey, while U.S. President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on Turkey

The Turkish plant is scheduled to build the next-generation VW Passat and Skoda Superb midsize model lines wita maximum annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles, according to an internal document seen by Automotive News Europe.

Its production start was scheduled for 2022.

The document said VW had picked Turkey for the factory because of "positive macroeconomic conditions" including an 80 million-strong population that rivals Germany's in size and its location amid growth markets.

VW also considered sites in Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania and northern Africa as the plant's location.

VW’s U.S. CEO Has Seen the Future and it’s All About SUVs and BEVs
Regaining the “cool” factor with a radically revamped line-up.
by Paul A. Eisenstein | Oct 14, 2019

VW Group of America CEO Scott Keogh introduces the new Atlas Cross Sport, one of at least three new SUVs in the automaker’s pipeline.
Few brands had the “cool” factor of Volkswagen back in the 1960s, when products like the Beetle and the Microbus won over millions of American buyers, young and old.
The German automaker is hoping to rebuild its hip brand identity – while moving past the “god-awful stupid mistake” it made by rigging its diesel engines – with an array of new SUVs and BEVs set to roll out during the next several years, Volkswagen Group of America CEO Scott Keogh told TheDetroitBureau.com.
While it’s far too early to tell how battery-electric vehicles like the ID Buzz microvan will fare in the market, there are signs that VW is regaining some of its luster. The automaker has defied the overall downturn in the U.S. market this year largely due to its expanding line-up of utility vehicles.

Just three years ago, the older Touareg and Tiguan models accounted for a mere 14% of Volkswagen brand sales in the States. This year, the SUV share surged to 52%, Keogh said during a discussion at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. And that’s likely not a high point, he added, following the debut of the automaker’s latest utility vehicle, a two-row version of the big Atlas dubbed the Sport Cross.
“This is a massive swing,” said Keogh, as the first of the new models rolled off the Chattanooga assembly line.

The production version of the VW ID Buzz is “on track” for a 2022 launch, according to Keogh.
The Cross Sport is just one of an assortment of upcoming Volkswagen utility vehicles, Keogh said during the subsequent conversation. He confirmed at least two more will follow, including a base model notably smaller than the current Tiguan, suggesting there is “a massive opportunity for SUVs in the A-segment.”
Yet another SUV, sized somewhere between that entry model and the Tiguan is also in the works.
VW unveiled the production version of its first long-range battery-electric, dubbed the ID.3, at the Frankfurt Motor Show a month ago. That hatchback won’t come to the U.S., but a crossover using the same, new all-electric platform will become the first BEV to charge into American showrooms.
“We will be showing that off sometime in February (2020) and it will be retailed starting at the very end of the 2020 model-year,” Keogh said, adding that it will get some variation of the “ID” nameplate that future all-electric Volkswagen products will get in Europe and other global markets.
Initially, the electric utility vehicle will be produced abroad but “then we will manufacture it here … sometime in calendar-year 2022,” said Keogh, noting that it will be the first of at least two all-electric products to be assembled at the Chattanooga plant once an $800 million expansion is completed.

The ID.3 is the first production model off VW’s new MEB all-electric architecture, but it won’t come to the U.S.
The automaker has not said much about the other product except to note that it will share the same underlying modular architecture as the ID.3 and ID crossover. Dubbed the MEB, it will underpin the majority of the future battery-electric vehicles coming from the various Volkswagen Group brands in the years ahead.

That includes the production version of the ID Buzz, a wildly popular concept vehicle meant to bring back the old Volkswagen Microbus in modern form.
There have been some concerns that the project was running behind schedule but, “That car is on track,” Keogh said. “It will launch in Europe in 2022, but we’ll have to do some localization before it comes here.”
Volkswagen faces a number of challenges, among them a perception that its products are more costly than those from U.S. and Asian rivals. But Keogh said he believes that VW’s all-in commitment to electric vehicles – an investment running over $12 billion – will ensure the economies of scale that actually will help it undercut its competition.
“Let’s not use the word, cheap,” he said, when asked how low its electric models will go. The better word for the electric crossover, he added, will be “Affordable. Right now, $33,000 or somewhere around there. I think that’s the center of the market.”

Porsche’s Taycan is one of numerous electric vehicles that will be marketed through other VW brands, a total of about 50 BEVs due by 2025.
There are other challenges that VW has to face down, Keogh added. Among other things, that includes the “god-awful stupid mistake” of cheating on diesel emissions standards. The scandal may have broken four years ago but. Keogh acknowledged, “There are customers who were wronged who are not going to forget it too quickly.”
The best VW can do, he stressed, is to show it is a better company, one making better products. And he is hoping that the marque’s SUVs will be a case in point. While Keogh said it remained a matter of debate how big the battery-car market will be, “I think this is a new opportunity Volkswagen can take advantage of because it’s the one time where we can leverage our global scale to get some competitive pricing,” while also delivering a mix of style, performance and other characteristics that will harken back to the “magic moment back in the ‘60s.”

With products like the Beetle and the Microbus, he said, “we provided transportation for the millions (in the U.S.). We had a heck of a cool car that caught the zeitgeist of America. I think we have that opportunity with our electric models to be the brand that introduces a cool car at a cool price.”

1) Atlas Cross sport
4) suv elettrico ID4X
5) versione coupè della ID4X
6) suv elettrico sui 5 metri
7) Microbus elettrico.
