Mahindra & Mahindra has unveiled five electric SUVs based on Volkswagen Group's MEB platform as the automaker seeks to expedite its lagging switch to battery-powered cars in India.

Mahindra is the second customer for VW Group's MEB platform after Ford, which will begin production this year of an MEB-based electric SUV built in its plant in Cologne, Germany.

The Mahindra electric SUVs will be sold under two brands -- XUV and BE, the automaker said in a video presentation on Monday.

The vehicles were conceptualized at the Mahindra Advanced Design Europe in the UK.

They will be underpinned by Mahindra's new Inglo electric platform, which will offer battery capacity ranging from 60 to 80 kilowatt hours and fast-charging of up to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes, Mahindra said. It did not specify the range of the EVs.

The BE brand's SUVs will have a bold design and will target non-mainstream buyers. The BE concept is shown.
More than 1 million vehicles will be produced by the brands over the duration of the deal, VW said in a statement.

"The partnership not only demonstrates that our platform business is highly competitive, but also that the MEB is well on track to become one of the leading open platforms for e-mobility," Volkswagen management board member Thomas Schmall said.

Schmall declined to provide firm numbers but said that the agreement would translate into a significant operating result that he said would be comparable to a medium-sized brand within the VW Group.

Mahindra's VW-based SUVs will be called the XUV.e8, XUV.e9, BE.05, BE.07 and the BE.09. The first of the five electric SUVs will be launched by the end of 2024 in India while other four should be out by 2026, Mahindra said.

Mahindra has said it expects electric models to account for 20 to 30 percent of its total SUV sales by March 2027.

The company sells some of India's most popular combustion-engine SUVs, including the Scorpio and Thar.

Producing a range of clean vehicles is crucial for Mahindra to break the dominance of rival Tata Motors in India’s nascent electric car market.

VW Group technology chief Thomas Schmall (sitting, front left) and Rajesh Jejurikar (front, right), Mahindra's executive director for automotive business, exchange documents during a signing ceremony for the provision of EV components.
Mahindra is a local leader in electric three-wheelers, but currently sells only one electric car, the e-Verito, despite having a first-mover advantage with its purchase of an India-based EV maker in 2010.

India's adoption of EVs has fallen behind other major countries such as China due to sparse charging infrastructure and the high upfront cost of battery-powered cars.

Decarbonizing transport is key for India, which is the world's third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, to meet its goal of becoming net-carbon zero by 2070.

In a sign of how the market is getting crowded, Indian ride-hailing firm Ola Electric said on Monday that it plans to start producing electric cars in 2024 with a range of up to 500 km (310 miles) and prices of less than $50,000.

Reuters and Bloomberg contributed to this report.

A4 e A6 avranno eredi ancora a benzina.

Porsche has lined up investor interest for its initial public offering at a valuation of as much as $85 billion, signaling one of Europe’s biggest-ever listings is poised to go ahead despite market headwinds, according to people familiar with the matter.

Volkswagen Group’s sports-car brand has secured pre-orders that exceed the shares on offer at a valuation between 60 billion and 85 billion euros ($85 billion), said the people, who asked not to be identified because discussions are private.

Porsche plans to announce its intention to float in Frankfurt in the first week of September after a supervisory board sign-off, barring unexpected market shocks, they said.

Big-name investors including T Rowe Price Group and Qatar Investment Authority have already indicated interest in subscribing to the IPO in that valuation range, the people said.

Porsche has also been gauging interest from billionaires including the founder of energy drink maker Red Bull, Dietrich Mateschitz, as well as LVMH Chairman Bernard Arnault, the people said.

Spokespeople for VW and Porsche declined to comment, while representatives for the potential investors did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The high demand in the so-called shadow order book -- which is built up ahead of the formal bids collected during the IPO roadshow -- is a good sign for the listing that market observers hope will re-open Europe’s nascent IPO market.
Many European and U.S. institutional asset managers that typically invest in major German IPOs have so far shied away from making firm commitments due to corporate governance concerns, the people said.
Still, Porsche has enough demand to nearly fill the shadow order book at the top end of the range and is oversubscribed at the lower end, the people said.

IPO investors will be sold preferred shares in Porsche that do not carry voting rights. The powerful billionaire Porsche and Piech clan, which controls VW through voting stock, would receive a special dividend to fund buying a blocking minority stake in Porsche.

Capital market jitters amid Russia’s war against the Ukraine and soaring energy prices and galloping inflation have cast doubts over Europe’s IPO market in general, which has been anemic year-to-date.

Some fund managers have in private conversations with Porsche’s management voiced concerns about the surprise appointment of the unit’s CEO, Oliver Blume, to the helm of VW, which will continue to hold the bulk of its shares.

:briaco ) verrà annunciato in autunno.

PRAGUE -- At the end of August, Skoda’s third CEO in three years took to the stage of the O2 arena here to address the Czech automaker’s persistent dilemma: How to differentiate itself from other VW Group brands and outside competitors without harming a long streak of healthy profit margins.

Klaus Zellmer, the former VW brand sales chief and longtime Porsche executive who took over at Skoda July 1, unveiled a concept previewing a flagship seven-seat electric SUV -- complete with an updated logo -- that will also set a new design course for Skoda.

The blocky and simple "modern-solid” look of the Vision 7S concept will appeal to Skoda’s core target market of adventurous families, without taking buyers from the likes of VW, executives told the audience.

"We are not after VW passenger car customers,” Zellmer told Automotive News Europe at the event. "We want to attract customers that are not within the wider group. This is why we have made the design so different from where we are today.”

Skoda’s success in selling its value-first, Czech-built hatchbacks, station wagons and SUVs across Europe has led to profit margins that have consistently beaten those of the VW brand (see interactive graphic, below). Skoda has also far outperformed VW Group’s Spanish brand, Seat, which sells at a similar price point.

Tapping into cheaper Czech labor and utilizing economies of scale from VW Group platforms and technologies has been a winning combination -- but it has also reportedly led to friction within the German parent group.

VW workers in Germany have in the past called for some Skoda production to be moved there to fill unused capacity, and also for Skoda to pay higher royalties for using common platforms.

One suggested direction for Skoda is that it become a rival to Renault’s low-cost Dacia brand.

In 2019, the German press reported that VW Group CEO Herbert Diess had suggested that Skoda be moved down market; last year, the group’s head of sales at the time, Christian Dahlheim, said the brand was "ideally positioned to tackle segments where people are not able to afford higher-priced cars."

Skoda, however, has strongly resisted any attempt to move the brand downward. The unveiling of the Vision 7S was another forceful message from Skoda that its future in Europe will be a continued rivalry with mainstream brands such as Renault, Ford, Peugeot and Hyundai and Toyota, and not just among the entry models.

Klaus Zellmer was named CEO of Skoda in April 2022. He took over the job July 1. He was formerly in charge of sales at VW brand.
Indeed, Skoda has shown it can compete and win in the biggest segments where its rivals struggle. The Kodiaq midsize SUV, for example, is the clear leader in its segment this year with sales of 42,660, almost double that of the closest combustion engine rival, the Peugeot 5008, figures from Dataforce show.

Zellmer pointed out that half of those Kodiaq sales were the seven-seat version, which he said indicates demand for a full-electric equivalent. "We see a clear market out there for a car like that,” he said.

During his speech in Prague, Zellmer promised a further 7.6 billion euros ($7.5 billion) of investment in electric mobility and 700 million euros in digitalization by 2026. He also announced three new EVs, including the seven-seat SUV to be sold alongside the current Enyaq iV coupe and crossover by the same date.

The Vision 7S, a seven-seat concept shown at the end of August, previews one of three new EVs coming from Skoda.
EUROPEAN MODEL LAUNCHES
Late 2023: New Superb midsize
Late 2023: Kodiaq midsize SUV refresh
2024: Octavia compact refresh
2024: Compact EV SUV below Enyaq iV
2026: Small EV (potentially called Elroq)
2026: Flagship 7-seat electric midsize SUV
2027: Compact EV hatchback*
Source: Skoda; *LMC Automotive estimate
The first will be a compact SUV smaller than the Enyaq coming in 2024, while the second, expected in 2025, is a small car based on VW Group’s MEB Entry platform and announced earlier this year for production in Spain.

By 2030, Zellmer forecasts 70 percent of Skoda sales in Europe will be EVs, the same ratio as VW Group overall in the region.

Skoda’s established timetable for rolling out new electric cars is the best proof that the brand’s position is secure within the VW Group, said Sammy Chan, an analyst at LMC Automotive.

With Seat losing out on EVs to its more upmarket offshoot, Cupra, Skoda can now rest easy.

"Skoda's EV planning secures its spot in the VW Group as Volkswagen's closest relative,” Chan said.

The acceleration in Skoda’s EV plan is evidence of the electric momentum in Europe as brands start tackling mass market segments, Patrick Hummel, analyst at the bank UBS, wrote in a note. "The challenge still remains how automakers can source enough batteries and raw materials,” he said.

Skoda's sales goal is to be fifth among volume brands in Europe, sales head Martin Jahn said at the Prague event. Skoda now sits in seventh place, behind Hyundai and Ford, after a tough seven months during which supply chain woes cut sales by 23 percent.

Sales of the brand’s best-selling Octavia hatchback and station wagon have fallen 43 percent this year, according to figures from Dataforce, after production was further hit by a February fire at a Grupo Antolin factory making door panels for the compact family.

Despite the sales knock, Skoda’s first-half revenue was up compared with the same period in 2021, indicating a stronger mix led by models such as the Kodiaq, which saw sales climb 2.4 percent, and the Enyaq, up 47 percent.

Skoda's best-selling nameplate is the Octavia, with 200,771 sales in 2021. Of those, 111,513 were station wagons (left) and 89,258 sedans. But overall sales of the compact family are down this year.
Slump in China
While the brand’s future in Europe looks secure, its position overseas is much more complex.

For much of the last decade up to 2020, Skoda’s biggest single market was China. The country accounted for up to 30 percent of the brand’s sales, but last year that figure had dropped to 13 percent, with just 54,401 cars built there.

The brand’s dramatic collapse in China has continued this year with sales of just 27,675, down 65 percent in the first seven months, according to data aggregator Bestsellingcarsblog.com.

So important has China been for Skoda that it designed market-specific models such as the Kamiq GT and Kodiaq GT, sportier versions of current SUVs. In total the brand has nine models on sale from four different production plants operated by VW Group joint venture companies, but those levels are clearly not sustainable.

Skoda sold just 507 Kodiaq GTs in China in the first seven months of this year, for example.

"Our European strategy is clear, it’s our key market. For China we need a new strategy,” Jahn told Automotive News Europe. He would not be drawn into whether one option was to leave the market entirely.

The brand was at least profitable in China this year, Jahn said. "We were losing money, but now we are in the black for 2022. We focused on profitable models and we did not push volumes,” he said.

The rise of domestic brands in China have hit many foreign volume-oriented automakers, but Skoda’s lower price positioning there has left it particularly vulnerable.

"China is a competitive battleground at the moment, and we have seen a lot of price competition,” Zellmer said. "We have not made a decision [about what we will do] but this is our homework.”

The loss of China’s volume has meant Skoda has backed away from its 2018 target of 2 million sales by 2025. The year it made that prediction represented its peak of deliveries at 1.25 million, before China’s collapse, the pandemic and subsequent supply chain shocks cut 2021’s delivery figure to 878,000.

How to approach growth outside of Europe is one of Skoda’s most pressing concerns. "We need a solution. Not just for China but for the rest of world,” Jahn said.

Potential in India
One market that is taking off is India, which in the first half of 2022 overtook China to become the brand’s third-largest market, after Germany and the Czech Republic.

Skoda sold 33,387 cars in India through July, according to data from Bestsellingcarsblog, up 292 percent, following the launch of the new Kushaq small SUV and Slavia small hatchback.

Skoda developed the cars on a heavily localized MQB-A0 platform aimed at emerging markets with less stringent emissions standards such as India.

The evolution of MQB-A0 represents the start of a wider strategy push into new markets after Skoda last year was handed the responsibility for developing the combustion-engine platform for the whole VW Group to compete in price-sensitive markets. VW has since launched the Taigun SUV on the platform in India.

"We see huge potential to grow in emerging markets," former Skoda CEO Thomas Schaefer said last year, citing Vietnam. Other potential markets include Brazil.

It is unclear how much sales growth Skoda can realize from the platform. A long-rumored VW factory in Southeast Asia has not yet materialized, and in July Skoda halted production at a Russian factory in Nizhny Novgorod run by Russia’s GAZ Group as a result of the war in Ukraine.

The plant built the Octavia, Karoq small SUV and Kodiaq, while VW also shut its plant in Kaluga that built the Rapid compact for Skoda.

Russia was a big market for Skoda. It was the sixth-biggest brand there in 2021 with sales of 90,443, according to data from the Association of European Businesses.

Skoda executives have set strict conditions for any relaunch in Russia.

"The war would have to end with acceptable outcomes for all parties, the sanctions would have to be lifted, and the logistics would have to work,” Jahn said. "Under these conditions we would consider [restarting production].”

For now Skoda has returned to being primarily a European brand, where its prospects are strongest. But there are still headwinds here for Zellmer.

The heavily unionized workforce in the Czech Republic, home to its Mlada Boleslav and Kvasiny plants, is in a strong position to push for wage increases and it is difficult to reduce headcount there, hampering cost-cutting efforts.

The VW Group has also yet to greenlight a rumored battery plant in the Czech Republic to supplement its growing network of announced European locations.

But showing off a future seven-seat electric SUV with a large 89 kilowatt-hour battery pack, unique styling and no direct VW brand rival could be just the thing to nudge the battery plant decision in Skoda’s favor.

Porsche AG are planned to begin trading on 29 September 2022.

Depending on the final number of placed preferred shares and the final setting of the offering price, the gross proceeds (including potential over-allotments) varies from EUR 8.71 bn to EUR 9.39 bn.

Furthermore, on 5 September 2022, Volkswagen AG declared the intention to transfer 25 % plus one share of the ordinary share capital in Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG to Porsche Automobil Holding SE at the placement price of the preferred shares plus a premium of 7.5 %. Depending on the final offering price, the gross proceeds from the transfer varies from EUR 9.36 bn to EUR 10.10 bn. Volkswagen AG and Porsche Automobil Holding SE entered into such Share Purchase Agreement today.

In the event of a successful IPO, Volkswagen AG will convene an extraordinary general meeting in December 2022, at which it will propose to its shareholders to distribute in the beginning of 2023 a special dividend of 49 % of the total gross proceeds from the placement of the preferred shares and the sale of the ordinary shares. This amount is divided equally among the 501,295,263 outstanding ordinary and preferred shares of Volkswagen AG.

Publication of material related party transactions pursuant to section 111c of the German Stock Corporation Act

The Share Purchase Agreement underlying the transfer of 25 % plus one share of the ordinary share capital in Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG is dated 18 September 2022 and has been entered into between Porsche Holding Stuttgart GmbH as seller and Porsche Automobil Holding SE as purchaser with the involvement of Volkswagen AG as warrantor. Currently, Porsche Automobil Holding SE holds approx. 53.3 % of the ordinary share capital and in aggregate approx. 31.9 % of the share capital of Volkswagen AG, with the latter holding 100 % of the shares in Porsche Holding Stuttgart GmbH. Hence, Porsche Automobil Holding SE is deemed to be a related party (nahestehende Person) of Volkswagen AG and Porsche Holding Stuttgart GmbH within the meaning of section 111a para. 1 sentence 2 of the German Stock Corporation Act. Volkswagen AG’s Supervisory Board consented to the conclusion of the Share Purchase Agreement on 5 September 2022 pursuant to section 111b para. 1 of the German Stock Corporation Act.

Pursuant to the Share Purchase Agreement, Porsche Automobil Holding SE acquires the ordinary share package from Porsche Holding Stuttgart GmbH in two tranches of 17.5 % (plus one ordinary share) and 7.5 % of the ordinary share capital in Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG. The purchase price per ordinary share sold which is to be paid by Porsche Automobil Holding SE as consideration is equal to the placement price plus a 7.5 % premium. Such consideration is considered by external experts to be within an adequate range.

The closing of the first tranche is subject to the condition precedent that the preferred shares be fully placed in the course of the IPO within the price range and that the placement shares be delivered in book-entry form against payment of the offer price. The closing of the second tranche of ordinary shares is subject to the condition precedent that the first tranche be closed and that the special dividend of 49 % of the total gross revenue from the placement of the preferred shares (including potential over-allotments) and the sale of the ordinary shares be paid out.

Under the Share Purchase Agreement, Volkswagen AG as warrantor provides several warranties to Porsche Automobil Holding SE, putting Porsche Automobil Holding SE substantially in the same position as the future holders of the preferred shares from the IPO. In addition, Volkswagen AG provides a few other warranties that are customary in the market and most of which are limited to Volkswagen AG’s positive knowledge (positive Kenntnis).

Volkswagen AG’s Executive Board considers the terms and conditions of the Share Purchase Agreement to be in line with third party standards and are therefore to be considered as appropriate. This assessment has also been confirmed by independent external experts.

Volkswagen Group brands have been instructed to prepare for a stock market listing as a training exercise, CEO Oliver Blume told a German business paper.

With the advice of a banking team, chief executives and financial officers at each brand are working on sharpening their focus with capital markets in mind, Blume told Handelsblatt, without commenting on whether further listings were planned.

VW Group's listing of Porsche last Thursday prompted speculation of further listings as a means of unlocking value in the group, which executives view as strongly undervalued.

The group's brands include theAudi, Bentley and Lamborghini luxury marques as well as the VW, Skoda and Seat mass-market brands.

With the advice of a banking team, chief executives and financial officers at each brand are working on sharpening their focus with capital markets in mind, Blume said.

The results of the exercise would be presented at a capital markets day next year.

"It should be understood like a training session," Blume said. "Within the Volkswagen Group I sense a clear motivation to give capital markets a higher relevance."

Porsche is already worth almost as much as its former parent, which Blume told Handelsblatt underlined the potential hidden value in the group.

VW chief financial officer Arno Antlitz told Reuters last week the next listing on the cards was of the group's battery unit PowerCo, declining to specify whether other brands like Audi could also be put on the market.

Hier will Schäfer nachbessern.

Vedremo.

A crossover version of the popular Volkswagen ID 3 family hatchback is on the way as Volkswagen looks to capitalise on the still fast-growing small SUV market.

CEO Thomas Schäfer has confirmed that the company is “working hard to develop an additional compact SUV based on the ID 3 so that we can also launch a Volkswagen product in this fast-growing vehicle segment”.

The Volkswagen ID 4 is currently the German brand’s smallest electric SUV, sharing the MEB platform with the ID 3, but its footprint is significantly bigger than its hatchback counterpart.

Volkswagen will also introduce two versions of its highly anticipated entry-level EV, which is billed to cost around £20,000, described as “a small car and a sporty crossover variant” by Schäfer. They will be in a similar, albeit electric, vein to the combustion-engined Volkswagen Polo and Volkswagen T-Cross.

These are among 10 new EVs to be launched by 2026, which Schafer claimed means Volkswagen will have the broadest electric portfolio in the automotive industry.

“From the entry-level e-car with a target price of under €25,000 to the Volkswagen ID Buzz and the new flagship Volkswagen ID Aero, we will have the right offer in every segment,” he said.

He added that the Volkswagen Group's MEB platform, which is currently the base du jour for EVs, continues to make “significant advances, for example in terms of range, performance and helpful features”.

The MEB platform will bow out later this decade, to be replaced by a new architecture called SSP (scalable systems platform), on which all volume-selling Volkswagen Group models will be based.

Schäfer said that Volkswagen is “shedding old habits” in terms of its product line-up, focusing on core models in the future and “noticeably simplifying our model range and packages over the next ten years”.

Inevitably that will mean some well-known ICE models will be no more and there will be significantly fewer specification options.

Schäfer said: “In each segment we compete in, we want to live up to our Leading Volume motto: do less but get it right.”

He was talking as he marked 100 days in the CEO role, in which he said there are three key focuses: best brand, best team, best results.

Talking about the latter, Schäfer said, in what appeared to be a subtle dig to the previous management: “Admittedly, in the past, this was more a snare than an impetus. That’s finally over now. Volkswagen, Seat, Cupra, Skoda and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles: we’re leveraging the huge potential of the brand group volume to give us a competitive edge.”

He said the brands were clearly positioned and differentiated to address different customers, while there was a “lean engine room working behind the scenes on synergies and efficiencies”.

He reconfirmed that Skoda will develop the new Skoda Superb and Volkswagen Passat, as well as hold responsibility for India and the entry-level MQB A0 platform, while Seat and Cupra are leading the charge for small EVs. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles meanwhile is running its autonomous driving development and Volkswagen is in charge of developing the new SSP platform.

Across its 23 production plants, Volkswagen is shifting the focus from individual models at each factory towards grouping by platforms. Schäfer said that by applying a principle of “develop once, implement worldwide”, it will save €220 million (£190.6m) this year. Its overall goal is to ensure 20% efficiency gains in synergy, 8% return on investment across its volume brands and that those brands account for 80% of entire group volume.

Schäfer also repeated his previous comments on the strength that he believes there is in the Volkswagen brand, saying: “People have smiles on their faces and pull out their smartphones when they see a Volkswagen Beetle, Bulli [Microbus] or Volkswagen Golf GTI. To us, our heritage is not a burden but a real asset.

“And that’s exactly what we want to build on again. Internally, I said to my team: “VW has to become a love brand again!”. A friendly brand that people like. A brand that listens and offers exactly what our customers want – especially in the electric and digital age of mobility
