Ford is overhauling its management and product planning to accelerate the arrival of new models – such as a Nissan Qashqai rival – and self-driving technology after the surprise departure of CEO Mark Fields.

Jim Hackett, Fields’ replacement, joined the Ford management board four years ago. He is said to be refocusing the top management ‘Business Plan Review’ (BPR) meeting towards future product and strategy rather than weekly problem solving.

Together with a senior management overhaul and a clearer focus on communicating technology developments, Hackett will try to arrest Ford’s 40% share price decline, which prompted the end of Fields’ three-year reign as CEO, despite Ford forecasting profits this year of $9 billion (£6.95bn).

“You have to look at the share price as the main driving force in this decision,” a source told Autocar. Fields is also said to have, in the eyes of the board, lost focus on the current business while attempting to turn Ford into a ‘mobility services’ company.

Why Ford's ex-CEO Fields wasn’t the man for the job

The Hackett-led shakeup will put Ford of Europe president Jim Farley in charge of all selling activities as the new head of global markets. The president of Ford’s operations in the Americas, Joe Hinrichs, will take control of product development and manufacturing. Raj Nair will move from chief engineer to become president of Ford North America and Hau ThaiTang, who was chief engineer on the 2005 Mustang, will lead global product development and purchasing. Ford of Europe COO Steven Armstrong will take over Farley’s former position.

Hackett’s move to overhaul its top management BPR meeting will change the focus of one of the major advances in the Fields/Alan Mulally era, which has been credited with pulling Ford’s departmental silos into a common direction.

Significantly, it will free Ford’s top managers to concentrate on introducing self-driving technology, electrification and new revenue streams from mobility services alongside new model launches.

Day-to-day operations, it is understood, will be handled by a secondary organisational set-up.

There are no plans for Ford to follow General Motors and sell off its European arm because the division is now a valuable asset. After years in the doldrums, it has been making profits since 2015. It also engineers powertrains, platforms and models that are sold globally. “Selling Ford of Europe is not going to happen,” a source told Autocar.

Ford’s product planning process will be freed to better identify global trends, like the emergence of the B-segment SUV and C-segment crossover.

Under Fields and his predecessor, Mulally, Ford’s product planning was organised under the ‘One Ford’ banner to deliver individual models engineered to multiple global standards.

Hackett said: “What One Ford doesn’t do as well is deal with a lot of complex strategies, with many elements.”

Mainstream models such as the Fiesta and Focus thrived under the One Ford regime. Both are brilliant to drive and the Fiesta is consistently the UK’s best-seller and recently outsold the Volkswagen Golf as Europe’s number one. One Ford has also delivered compelling performance models such as the Focus RS, Mustang and GT.

2017 Ford GT review

But to make production, models had to be viable in all key markets — North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. As a result, development of spin-off models like B-segment SUVs has been patchy.

One view is that the complexity of global planning for One Ford models hampered decision making and encouraged ‘one size fits all’ vehicles.

Product planning on a global basis has certainly led to some below-par models such as the Ecosport SUV, engineered in Brazil, built in India and not up to European standards. The latest Ecosport is doing better and European sales were up 42% to 9200 in the first quarter of 2017, according to market analysts JATO. But rivals from Peugeot, Renault and Vauxhall-Opel each outsell it by up to three to one.

To better match European expectations, production of the Ecosport will be moved from India to Romania this autumn. The car will get a new interior and under-skin improvements.

But the Ecosport has already been re-engineered three times in its five-year lifespan. And with hindsight, the costs associated with that would have better been allocated to a higher-quality initial design.

There is another element to moving Ecosport production. Adding its volume bails out the Craiova plant, whose B-Max compact MPV is selling in a shrinking market. It built only 40k units last year, despite being planned at over 100k.

Ford to release mass-market autonomous car in 2021

Ford is also moving to add a new European-themed crossover, codenamed C430, which can finally provide it with rival to the market-leading Qashqai. But it won’t arrive until 2019 — 13 years after the Nissan soft-roader’s debut.

Hackett might reflect that, given the choice again, Ford might not have spent scarce resources on re-engineering the Fusion for Europe, where it sells in a shrinking segment.

Hackett didn’t provide any detail on his plan to transition Ford to electrified powertrains, although finance director Bob Shanks confirmed that $4.5bn (£3.47bn) continues to be earmarked for new EVs and $1bn (£770m) for autonomous vehicles, with a target of a Level 4 self-driving car by 2021.

Ford’s main thrust on EVs is a 13-model line-up, including an SUV in 2020, possibly badged Model E, with a 300-mile range.

Rivals are being readied for a similar launch date, so Ford’s product planning is looking on schedule in this cutting-edge technology.

poi salendo arrivi a 20mila (tanto captur quanto ecosport)

500X vs Countryman vs Juke vs 2008
http://www.quattroruote.it/news/prove_s ... ideo_.html

Megane--> Koleos
Golf--> Tiguan
Corolla--> Rav4
Focus--> Kuga
etc..

Vedremo, i costruttori sembrano abbastanza sicuri.

Ford Motor Co (F.N) will export the next-generation Focus compact car from China to North America in 2019, rather than from Mexico as earlier planned, saving the company $500 million, a top executive said on Tuesday.

It is the first major manufacturing investment decision made by new Chief Executive Officer Jim Hackett, who succeeded Mark Fields in late May. Discussion about the small-car production shift from Mexico to China began "a couple months ago" under Fields, said Joe Hinrichs, president of global operations.

PUBBLICITÀ

The decision also signals a shift in strategy at Ford, which is responding to low fuel prices and to U.S. consumer demand by de-emphasizing small cars while boosting U.S. production of trucks and SUVs.

Ford on Tuesday said it would invest $900 million at its Kentucky truck plant to build the redesigned Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator full-size SUVs this fall. It plans to export the Navigator to China and has contingency plans to build more of the big SUVs at an Ohio plant if demand grows.

In January, after U.S. President Donald Trump criticized Ford for shipping small-car manufacturing to Mexico, Ford said it would kill plans to build a $1.8-billion Focus plant in San Luis Potosi and instead produce the new Focus at an existing plant in Hermosillo.

The White House had no immediate comment.

Although it is cheaper to build and ship cars to the United States from Mexico than China, "this was not a variable cost decision," Hinrichs said in a Tuesday morning briefing. "It allows us to free up a lot of capital" because Ford now has to retool only one plant - the existing Focus factory in Chongqing - rather than two to supply North America.

The current Focus will be phased out of production in Wayne, Michigan in mid-2018, according to Hinrichs. The Wayne plant will begin building a new Ranger midsize truck in late 2018 and a Bronco midsize SUV in 2020.

Ford executives told Trump last year that moving production to Michigan of bigger vehicles that were more profitable would secure the Wayne plant's future - a decision later praised by Trump.

No U.S. jobs will be affected by shifting Focus production to China, Ford said, adding that it employs more U.S. hourly workers and builds more vehicles in the United States than any other automaker.

The United Auto Workers declined to comment.

Hinrichs said "the capital saving outweighs the risk" of having to pay a potential border tax on the Chinese-built Focus.

Ford U.S. Focus sales have fallen 22 percent this year, as low gas prices have helped spur more buyers into larger vehicles. Ford's full-size F-series pick-up remains the best-selling U.S. vehicle by a wide margin.

Ford stock fell 0.4 percent at $11.19.

Hinrichs said Ford remains a major exporter to China, shipping about 80,000 vehicles a year from North America.

General Motors Co (GM.N) has been exporting Buick and Cadillac cars from China to the United States, as has Volvo Cars, a unit of Chinese automaker Geely (0175.HK).

Assolutamente no, ci hanno addirittura perso.
We're winning, se domani. :vomito

(Reuters) - Ford Motor Co Chief Executive Jim Hackett is reviewing the automaker's operations in India and other markets, as well as Ford's future product programs including plans to build a self-driving commercial vehicle in 2021, according to company officials and other sources familiar with that review.

Hackett, who took over as CEO in May, has told investors he is working on a 100-day review of Ford's operations but has so far provided few details of the process, except to indicate that it is looking at the automakers' luxury vehicle strategy, the future of its small vehicles and investments in emerging markets.

Ford Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks told Reuters in an interview that the review covers a range of issues, including Ford's strategy for India.

"We have a lot of work to do (as) we address issues of how to fix India," Shanks said. "Everything is on the table."

General Motors Co in May said it would stop selling cars in India but continue to produce vehicles there for export. Shanks said no decisions have been made and noted that Ford has a larger business in India than GM did. "We are very cognizant that will be the third-largest market in the world," he said.

"Some big decisions will be made," Shanks said, but he cautioned Ford may not disclose all those decisions at the end of the 100-day review.

Hackett is addressing challenges that have contributed to a nearly 8 percent decline in Ford's share price this year.

The review of the Lincoln luxury brand includes whether current plans will meet former CEO Mark Fields' ambitious targets for growth and revenue, people familiar with the process said.

Ford has set a target of putting a self-driving shuttle into commercial ride-sharing fleets by 2021. Hackett is reviewing the investment and timing for that project, the sources said.

Hackett also assessing whether to reduce and consolidate production of models such as the Fiesta subcompact and two midsized sedans that are built in multiple locations around the world, but are experiencing slowing demand.

One proposal would shift production of the next-generation Mondeo mid-sized sedan from Europe to Mexico, where it would share an assembly line with its sibling, the Ford Fusion, avoiding the cost of retooling two plants.

Shortly after he took charge, Hackett approved a proposal to shift production of the next-generation Focus for North America from Mexico to China, saving the company an estimated $500 million by consolidating two factories into one.

Hackett also is said to be questioning a plan to build at least half a dozen future models, including replacements for the Ford Mustang and Explorer and Lincoln Continental, on a new flexible platform that is designed to accommodate both front- and rear-wheel-drive vehicles.

MUMBAI -- Ford Motor and Indian automaker Mahindra and Mahindra are exploring forming a strategic alliance as the U.S. automaker tries to gain a foothold in a country that’s set to become the world’s third-biggest car market.

The companies said in a joint statement on Monday the areas of potential cooperation include connected cars, mobility programs, electric vehicles and sourcing among other areas.

"The agreement of intent between the two companies will allow each to leverage their mutual strengths during a period of unprecedented transformation in the global automotive industry," the two companies said.

The development is an about face for Ford after previous CEO Mark Fields had put the company's business in India under review. Jim Hackett, who became CEO after Ford's board ousted Fields in May, has now found a way to stay in India while sharing costs with Mahindra on product development and sourcing. In May, GM announced it was stopping sales in the Indian market.

The India plan is one of the most significant Ford has made in the first four months under Hackett, who had said he would conduct a 100-day review of Ford's business. The former CEO of office furniture maker Steelcase is scheduled to lay out his strategy to investors on Oct. 3 in New York.

A flood of new vehicles are slated to enter India over the next five years, intensifying competition in the country's $30 billion auto market, which is expected to rank behind only China and the U.S. in sales by 2020, the Indian automakers association said earlier this month.

Ford re-entered India in mid 1990s, when the country opened its car market for foreign investment, by partnering with Mahindra. The two companies set up a factory near the southern city of Chennai and started making the Escort sedan. Ikon, Fusion, Fiesta, Figo and other models followed, but nothing gave the carmaker the success of Suzuki Motor and Hyundai Motor in India. Ford and Mahindra ended their partnership in 2005.

A flood of new models are slated to enter India over the next five years, intensifying competition in the country's $30 billion auto market, which is expected to rank behind only China and the U.S. in sales by 2020, the Indian automakers association said earlier this month.

Tough market

An alliance would come as foreign car makers such as Volkswagen, General Motors and Fiat Chrysler have struggled in India where nimbler rivals such as Suzuki and Hyundai have cornered roughly two-thirds of the market.

In May, GM said it would stop selling cars in India from the end of this year, drawing a line under two decades of battling in one of the world's most competitive markets where small cars make up the bulk of sales.

The potential alliance would explore Ford leveraging Mahindra's distribution reach within India and Mahindra looking to benefit from Ford's reach in other emerging markets, the companies said.

"Teams from both companies will collaborate and work together for a period of up to three years. Any further strategic cooperation between the two companies will be decided at the end of that period," they said.

Globally, traditional automakers are weighing how best to work on new, disruptive technology, from electric vehicles to autonomous driving, that require hefty investment and have turned companies such as Google and Tesla into rivals. One way is by joining hands.

Toyota said last month it planned to take a 5 percent share of smaller Japanese rival Mazda as part of an alliance that will see the two build a $1.6 billion U.S. assembly plant and work together on electric vehicles.

'Committed to India'

Ford is among the top exporters of cars from India and manufactures and exports vehicles and engines from its plants in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and Sanand in Gujarat.

"Ford is committed to India and this alliance can help us deliver the best vehicles and services to customers while profitably growing in the world's fifth largest vehicle market," Jim Farley, Ford executive vice president and president of global markets, said in the statement.

Farley said the growth potential in the utility-vehicle space and the growing importance of affordable electric vehicles in India are aligned with its strategic priorities.

The company has invested over $2 billion in India and plans to spend more to set up a global engineering centre in the southern city of Chennai that will help tweak products for the local market and more swiftly adapt to changing consumer trends.

Ford is increasing its focus on driving down costs by sourcing more parts locally and using more common features across models to achieve economies of scale.

DETROIT (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co (F.N) plans to slash $14 billion in costs over the next five years, Chief Executive Officer Jim Hackett told investors on Tuesday, adding that the No. 2 U.S. automaker would shift capital investment away from sedans and internal combustion engines to develop more trucks and electric and hybrid cars.

Most of those savings will not show up on Ford’s bottom line until 2019 and 2020, Hackett and other Ford executives said, reflecting the industry’s long product engineering lead times.

Ford will be open to more partnerships to spread the costs and risks of simultaneously developing new technology and services while churning out profit from selling trucks and sport utility vehicles in North America, Hackett said during a nearly two-hour presentation. He cited a partnership with ride services company Lyft to deploy future Ford self-driving cars, an alliance with Indian automaker Mahindra (MAHM.NS) and a potential alliance with Chinese electric vehicle maker Zotye.

The automaker reaffirmed a goal of achieving 8 percent automotive operating margins and generating returns that exceed the cost of capital. Ford will provide a financial forecast for 2018 in January. Ford Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks said it could take until 2020 or later to achieve the 8 percent margin goal.

Other automakers have warned that shifting to all-electric vehicles could undercut profit margins. “I don’t think we should walk off a ledge where we destroy the earnings power of the company,” Hackett said, saying Ford is planning for a third of vehicles to still have internal combustion engines by 2030 - the year some European governments have proposed banning petroleum fueled cars.

Hackett, former CEO of office furniture maker Steelcase Inc (SCS.N), took the top post at Ford in May after his predecessor Mark Fields was pushed out. At the time, Hackett promised to tell investors after 100 days how he would improve the “fitness” of Ford to compete as the auto industry becomes more digital, more electric and less wedded to selling one vehicle at a time to individuals.

Ford shares were little changed after hours as Hackett and other executives presented their outlook. Ford shares had risen 2.1 percent on Tuesday, up with other automotive stocks as the industry reported the highest sales pace in a dozen years. However, the company’s share price is down 30 percent since July 2014.

Hackett has signed off on a series of moves, including a plan to shift production of Ford Focus compact cars from Michigan to China. He also hired a company outsider, Jason Luo, to lead Ford’s business in China, the world’s largest car market, where Ford is revamping operations and looking to expand partnerships in electric vehicles.

Ford is playing catch up in some areas. By 2019, Ford plans to equip all U.S. models with built-in modems and to install mobile internet connections in 90 percent of global vehicles by 2020, Hackett said.

Rival General Motors Co(GM.N) has been installing built-in mobile broadband connections in its U.S. vehicles since 2015 and now has about 7 million 4G LTE connected vehicles on the road globally, a spokesman said on Tuesday.

Of Ford’s $14 billion in promised cost reductions over five years, $10 billion will come from material costs and $4 billion from reduced engineering costs, Hackett said.

“We have too much cost across our business,” Hackett said.

By 2022, Ford plans to cut spending on future internal combustion engines by a third, or about $500 million, putting that money instead into expanded electric and hybrid vehicle development, on top of $4.5 billion previously announced. Ford had already promised 13 new electric or hybrid vehicles within the next five years.

Ford is “looking to build sustainably profitable BEV (battery electric vehicle) business” in segments where “we have a strong revenue presence,” Jim Farley, head of global markets, told investors.

Farley also said Ford is looking “carefully” at marginally profitable or unprofitable operations in Europe and Latin America, and could look to partnerships in those markets.

Electric vehicles will mean auto factories can have a final

assembly area that is half the size, requires half the capital investment and 30 percent fewer labor hours per car, said Joe Hinrichs, president of global operations.

GM on Monday said it planned to launch 20 new all-electric vehicles by 2023.

One way to cut costs will be to offer fewer variations of Ford’s models, Hackett said. The slow-selling Ford Fusion midsize sedan can now be ordered in 35,000 combinations of features, colors and powertrain options. The future model will come in just 96 combinations, meaning fewer parts to design, produce and store in inventory, Ford showed in a presentation.

He said Ford also will cut the time it takes to engineer a new car by 20 percent, and invest in “factories of the future” that will occupy less space and use more robots.
