Hyundai-Kia:
Hyundai, Kia sales drop to seven-year low on China weakness, forecast better 2020

Joyce Lee, Hyunjoo Jin

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's Hyundai Motor (005380.KS) and affiliate Kia Motors (000270.KS) turned in their lowest sales in seven years in 2019 as business in China slumped, missing their target for a fifth straight time, but forecast better numbers for 2020.

Weak 2019 sales underline the challenges Hyundai Motor Group has been facing, including a string of annual profit declines at Hyundai and higher costs to develop future technologies even as the global auto market stagnates.

“The market environment is very uncertain and internal and external challenges will intensify,” Group heir apparent Euisun Chung said on Thursday. But he reiterated that the Group would continue to focus on profitability and technology investment.

Hyundai and Kia reported a 3% drop in their combined global sales to 7.19 million vehicles for 2019, falling short of their target to sell 7.6 million vehicles.

Their sales have slumped in China, the world’s biggest auto market, offsetting a recovery in the United States where demand for their new sport utility vehicles and a favorable currency exchange rate have helped.

“TOO AGGRESSIVE”

Hyundai and Kia, however, said they expect combined sales to rise 5% to 7.54 million vehicles this year, without giving any further details. That compares with a 0.4% growth in global market projected by its think tank and a 0.9% contraction forecast by Moody Investors Service.

But analysts caution it will be a daunting task for the car makers, together the world’s fifth-biggest by sales, to meet their target for this year.

“I think Hyundai Motor’s target may be too aggressive ... my guess is that it assumed a recovery in China, but that’s not easy,” said Kim Pyung-mo, analyst at DB Financial Investment.

“Hyundai underperformed the (China auto) market in November, and it’s too early to say that China’s industrial demand will be seeing a complete recovery.”

The global auto market is widely expected to stay sluggish in 2020, as demand shrinks further in the United States and Europe, signaling more competition for Hyundai and Kia.

PLANS

Hyundai and Kia plan to launch redesigned SUVs like Hyundai’s Tucson and Kia’s Sorento in 2020.

They will also accelerate their push for mobility services such as ride-sharing, and have plans to establish operations in the United States, Europe and Asia, said Chung, Hyundai Motor Group’s executive vice chairman.

The Group, which in 2019 announced a joint venture with U.S. autonomous driving technology company Aptiv (APTV.N), plans to operate autonomous vehicles in select regions in 2023, and reach commercial production by the second half of 2024, Chung added.

Hyundai Motor shares fell 2.1% prior to the sales announcement, while Kia Motors stocks dropped 4.1%.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Daimler (DAIGn.DE) sold 2.34 million Mercedes-Benz passenger cars in 2019 for a ninth consecutive year of record sales, it said on Thursday, putting the German carmaker in pole position to retain the title of biggest-selling premium car brand.

Stuttgart-based Daimler claimed it had retained the title of best-selling luxury car brand. However, rival BMW (BMWG.DE), the brands of which include Mini and Rolls-Royce, has yet to give a breakdown of its global sales.

As a carmaking group, BMW sold 2.52 million vehicles last year to beat Daimler’s 2.46 million Mercedes-Benz and Smart vehicles over the same period.

Mercedes-Benz said it posted sales records in Germany, China and the United States thanks to strong demand for its sports utility vehicles and high-end limousines.

Daimler said Mercedes-Benz sales rose 6.2% in China, where local customers ordered the top-end Maybach Mercedes-Benz S-Class limousine at a rate of more than 700 vehicles a month.

Volkswagen's (VOWG_p.DE) premium arm Audi (NSUG.DE) said it had sold 1.84 million cars last year, up 1.8% year on year, thanks to a 4.1% jump in Chinese sales including Hong Kong.

Audi said it sold 19,500 electric e-tron models in Europe last year while Daimler declined to provide a figure for how many electric Mercedes-Benz EQC models it delivered to customers.

Audi:

Despite challenging conditions, Audi can report a positive performance of deliveries to customers for 2019: Approximately 1,845,550 cars represent an increase of 1.8 percent. In all three core markets, the Four Rings delivered more automobiles in 2019 than in the previous year. In China, the company set a new record with a total of 690,083 vehicles delivered (+4.1%). In the United States, deliveries continued at the very high level of 2018 with an increase of 0.4 percent. And demand in Germany increased by 4.3 percent. In the month of December, the company delivered approximately 176,000 cars, 13.9 percent more than in December 2018.

“After a mixed first half of the year, we successfully caught up in the second half,” says Hildegard Wortmann, Member of the Board of Management for Sales and Marketing at AUDI AG. “In 2019, we clearly showed the potential of our brand and our young model portfolio. Although the demands placed upon us will remain high in 2020, we have set the course for further growth.”

In terms of the model range, Audi increased its deliveries in the C-SUV segment in 2019 by 46.2 percent compared with the previous year. This is primarily due to the positive performance of the Audi e-tron and Audi Q8, although the models have only recently become available in all core regions. The first all-electric large-scale production model of the Four Rings was launched in Europe in March, came to North America in early summer, and has been available as an imported model in China since November. In a cross-segment electric-SUV comparison, the Audi e-tron is the market leader in Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Sweden and Austria. The model is also the first ever electric car to receive the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award in the United States.

In China, Audi delivered more vehicles than ever before last year. 690,083 automobiles represent an increase of 4.1 percent. Audi achieved a new record of 71,487 cars in the month of December (+9.0%). On the one hand, the Four Rings achieved growth in full-year 2019 for the locally produced premium models A4 L (+3.0% to 168,189 units) and Q5 L (+17.0% to 139,297 units). On the other hand, demand for the A8 L flagship in the luxury class had a very positive effect with 12,451 units delivered (+21.6%). The Audi Q2 L e-tron, the first locally produced electric car, also set an important milestone for the electrification of the Chinese model range in the final quarter of 2019. Local production of the Audi e-tron will start by the end of 2020.

In the United States, Audi once again achieved a high volume of deliveries in 2019 and completed the year at the prior-year level with a total of 224,111 automobiles delivered (+0.4%). Throughout the year, the key drivers were once again the new full-size models, with demand rising sharply for each of them (Audi A6 +68.6% to 17,807 cars, Audi A7 +28.6% to 4,955 cars, Audi A8 +85.3% to 2,963 cars). In 2019, one in three Q8 models was delivered to a customer in the USA. Despite strong December sales in the North America region (+12.3% to approximately 29,000 vehicles), deliveries for the full year were slightly down on 2018 (-1.8% to about 270,100 units).

Numerous political and economic uncertainties, model changes and the aftereffects of WLTP conversion were key features of Audi’s business in Europe in 2019. Across all models, deliveries on the home continent rose by 3.5 percent to approximately 769,650 units in the full year. Audi achieved significant growth in the final quarter primarily due to prior-year effects. The new Audi Q3 provided positive impetus, with sales rising by 55.5 percent to 93.900 units. With around 19,550 models delivered, the Audi e-tron was extremely well received by European customers, with more than a quarter of that number delivered in Norway. In Germany, the manufacturer completed the year with a 4.3 percent increase to 271,613 units.

Jaguar Land Rover's sales dip in 2019, but show signs of recovery

Reuters Staff

LONDON (Reuters) - Carmaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) posted a 6% fall in full-year sales on Friday after a challenging year in which its performance was hit by the weakening Chinese autos market and falling demand for diesel vehicles in Europe.

FILE PHOTO: Jaguar Land Rover unveils the new Jaguar F-Type model during its world premiere in Munich, Germany, December 2, 2019. REUTERS/Michaela Rehle

Retail sales stood at 557,706 vehicles in 2019, hit by a 13.5% slump in China, but in the last six months the firm reported double-digit growth in the country, with overall company sales up 1.3% in December.

“2019 was a year of two halves,” said Chief Commercial Officer Felix Brautigam.

“Over the last six months we saw a marked improvement in China, where intensive work with our retailers, combined with significant process and product improvements are starting to gain traction.”

At the start of 2019, JLR announced plans to cut around 10% of its workforce and it has been pursuing measures to reduce costs and improve cash flows by 2.5 billion pounds.

The company, owned by India's Tata Motors (TAMO.NS), returned to the black in the three months to the end of September 2019, posting a 156 million-pound ($204 million) profit.

TAMO.NSBMWG.DE

JLR, like much of the car industry, has also faced the challenge of stepping up investment in zero and low-emissions vehicles as regulations tighten while simultaneously dealing with a drop in demand for some conventionally-powered models.

It has paired up with BMW (BMWG.DE) to jointly develop electric motors, transmissions and power electronics which should allow it to share some of the high costs of advancing the green technology

Volkswagen Passenger Cars brings 2019 to a successful close

Volkswagen brand boosts global deliveries by 0.5 percent compared with 2018 to 6.28 million vehiclesIncreases in Europe, South America, Asia-Pacific and the USAMore than 80,000 electric vehicles delivered (+60 percent)

Porsche has shrugged off any effects of the shrinking global market last year, posting a 10% increase in deliveries in 2019 from the year before.

Deliveries of Volkswagen's <VOWG_p.DE> Skoda Auto dropped slightly in 2019 to 1.24 million vehicles, from 1.25 million in 2018, mainly due to weaker sales in China, the company said on Monday.

Skoda said deliveries in China dropped by 17.3% while shipping to other markets were up 5.3% last year.

PSA Group's global vehicle sales fell 10 percent last year to 3.49 million, compared with a record 3.88 million in 2018, as the automaker suffered from declining volumes in China, the Middle East and Africa.

In its European home market, PSA's sales declined by 2.5 percent in 2019 to 3.11 million vehicles, with its Opel-Vauxhall brand, which dropped its Adam, Karl and Cascada models, suffering the steepest fall, down 6.4 percent.

In Europe, helped by an increase in sales of light commercial vehicles, PSA maintained its position by achieving a 16.8 percent market share in a market that was up a slight 1.3 percent, the automaker said in a statement on Thursday. In 2018, PSA's market share had jumped 3.8 points versus 2017 to reach 17.1 percent.

PSA said 2019 was a year of consolidation for its Peugeot marque. The brand's new generations of the 208 and 2008 small-car segment vehicles will support its sales growth in 2020, PSA said.

Citroen had the strongest growth among the top 12 best-selling brands in Europe in 2020,the company said.

The DS brand was PSA's only brand to boost sales globally last year, with an increase of 17 percent to 62,512 units. The Peugeot brand saw a fall of 16 percent, Citroen declined 5.1 percent and Opel/Vauxhall fell 5.9 percent.

PSA's best-selling models recorded sales declines.

The Peugeot 208 small hatchback, the No. 1 best-seller, fell by 5.9 percent to 277,562; the second-ranked Peugeot 3008 compact SUV fell by 8.6 percent to 242,332; the Citroen C3 small hatchback was down by 4.1 percent to 241,092; and the Opel Corsa small hatchback fell by 2 percent to 230,971.

Big gains for established models included a jump of 126 percent for the Opel Combo small van, which relaunched on a PSA platform, to 64,009 sales; and the Peugeot 508 midsize sedan and station wagon, up 245 percent to 59,967, also with the launch of a new generation.

PSA's sales in China plunged 55 percent to 117,084 vehicles, a 10th of the 1 million-a-year target it had set itself a few years ago.

Sales volumes were also down 23 percent in a contracting Latin American market and 44 percent in the Middle East-Africa region, punished by the group's forced withdrawal from Iran under threat of U.S. sanctions.

The company gave no sales forecasts for the current year.

PSA and FCA said last month they had agreed on a binding merger in a $50 billion deal that will pave the way to the creation of the world's fourth-largest automaker.

PSA's French rival Renault is due to publish its 2019 global sales on Friday.

Groupe Renault consolidates its positions in its core markets and maintains its global market share
• Groupe Renault maintains a market share of 4.25% in a market down 4.8%. Sales volumes totaled 3.8 million vehicles, down 3.4%.

• Over the last quarter, the group recorded an increase in sales thanks to the success of New Clio in Europe, Arkana in Russia and Triber in India.
• The group is consolidating its positions in its core markets: Europe grew by 1.3%, in Russia it confirmed its solid leadership with 29% market share, in Brazil Renault became the fourth brand, gaining two positions, and in India, Renault is the only brand to have gained in passenger car volume.
• For the group, 2020 will mark a new stage in its electric offensive with the launch of Twingo Z.E. and the deployment of its new E-Tech hybrid and plug-in hybrid offers.
• The attractiveness of new products to customers will enable the group to continue to improve its price positioning initiated in 2019.

Boulogne-Billancourt, 01/17/2020

"Group sales rose in the last quarter thanks to the success of new launches in the group's core markets such as Europe, Russia, and in India, where Renault is growing strongly. In 2020, we will benefit from full-year sales of our best-selling New Clio and New Captur, as well as the acceleration of our electric and hybrid offensive, notably with New ZOE, Twingo Z.E. and E-Tech technology. We will continue to improve our price positioning initiated in 2019, supported by the quality and attractiveness of our new products" said Olivier Murguet, Sales and Regions Executive Vice President, of Groupe Renault.

In 2019, Groupe Renault sold 3,753,723 vehicles worldwide, down 3.4% (-130,550 vehicles of which -183,000 in the Iranian, Argentinean and Turkish markets) in a market that declined by 4.8%.

Worldwide sales of the group's electric vehicles rose 23.5% to 62,447 vehicles. New ZOE, launched at the end of 2019, will be the flagship of the electric range in 2020. In the light commercial electric vehicle segment, Kangoo Z.E. remains the undisputed leader, with a growth of 19.2% to 10,349 vehicles. In China, the group launched Renault City K-ZE in November and recorded 2,658 sales in two months.

In the light commercial vehicle segment, the group volumes rose 0.7% to reach a new sales record. This record was achieved thanks to the performance of the Renault brand in Europe, which rose 3.6% in a market that grew by 2.8%.

Renault Pro+ maintained its two European leaderships for another year in terms of sales volumes for vans and light commercial vehicles, as well as sales of electric light commercial vehicles.

In Europe, sales rose 1.3% in a market up 1.2%.

Clio is the leader in the B-segment, with 45% of New Clio sales in the top-of-the-range version. Clio 4 is maintained in the range to provide a broader customer offering. Captur remains the leading SUV in its category. ZOE saw its volumes grow by 19.1% (47,027 vehicles).

The Dacia brand set a new sales record for the seventh consecutive year in Europe, with 564,854 vehicles sold (+10.4%). This increase was driven by the performance of Duster and Sandero.

In Russia, Groupe Renault led the way with a market share of 29%, up 1.4 points. Sales rose 2.3% in a market that contracted by 2.6%.

LADA sales rose 0.6% to 362,356 vehicles, confirming its leading position with a 20.7% market share. LADA Granta and LADA Vesta confirmed their position as the best-selling vehicles in Russia. In December 2019, the iconic Niva model joined the group.

The Renault brand also grew by 5.8% to 144,989 vehicles sold, thanks to the successful launch of Arkana in the second half.

In Brazil, sales volumes rose 11.3% to 239,174 vehicles and market share reached a record 9% (+0.3 point) thanks to the good results of Kwid. The market remained dynamic and grew by 7.4%.

In India, the group's strategy is beginning to bear fruit. Renault is the only brand to make progress in 2019 in the passenger cars segment. Sales rose 7.9% in a market that contracted by 11.3%. The increase was mainly due to the successful launch of Triber and the success of New Kwid. Market share reached 2.5%, up 0.45 points compared to 2018.

Triber, the compact vehicle with unparalleled flexibility for transporting up to seven people, launched in August, has already recorded 24,142 sales, with more than half of these in the premium version. Triber is positioned in a segment that is expected to account for nearly 50% of the Indian market by 2022.

Outside of the core countries, the group is the leader in Africa, Turkey, Colombia and Romania.

For the group, 2020 will mark a new stage in its electric offensive with the launch of Twingo Z.E. and the deployment of its new E-Tech hybrid and plug-in hybrid offers.

oyota Motor Corp.’s luxury Lexus brand posted a double-digit sales gain last year, taking its 30th anniversary in stride as strength in China and Europe offset stalled demand in North America.

The brand, which debuted in 1989, grew 10% to 765,330 vehicles worldwide, Toyota said in a statement Monday, powered by strong sales of its UX subcompact crossover and best-selling RX sports utility vehicle.

China sales soared 25% to 202,000 vehicles in 2019 and deliveries in Europe climbed 14% to 87,000 vehicles. But in North America, the brand’s largest market, sales came to 325,000 vehicles — which Toyota said were “level with prior year.“

Lexus’ shift toward smaller and more fuel-efficient vehicles such as hybrid gas-electric motors has proved popular in China and Europe, but an aging product lineup in the U.S. — where larger vehicles rule the road — has cost it market share and momentum.

Toyota has long sought to make Lexus a global brand, and its rapid growth in China and Europe after years of sluggishness is helping realize that goal. Company officials say they haven’t forgotten about the U.S. market — which it once dominated — and have a series of newer vehicles in the offing.

Sales in the U.S. fell 0.1% last year to 298,114 vehicles. That marked a fourth straight year of declines and the lowest level since 2013.

Lexus sold its 10 millionth vehicle last year, a testament to its success over other Japanese luxury brands such as Nissan Motor Co.’s Infiniti and Honda Motor Co.’s Acura, whose cumulative worldwide sales total 2.6 million and 5.4 million, respectively.

But the Toyota premium brand still trails behind German rivals. Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz saw 2019 sales rise 1.3% to 2.34 million vehicles, besting No. 2 BMW AG’s 2% gain to 2.17 million vehicles.

Non so come faranno.

Audi Q4 e-Tron, BMW i4 and iX3, Ford Mustang Mach-e, Honda e, Jaguar XJ, Mini Cooper SE, Peugeot e-2008, e-208 and Opel/Vauxhall Corsa e as well as EV versions of their midsized vans Peugeot Traveller, Citroën Spacetourer and Opel/Vauxhall Zafira Life, Polestar 2, Porsche Taycan, Tesla Model Y, Volkswagen ID.3 and ID4 and Volvo XC40 EV.
