FRANKFURT -- General Motors' Opel unit said today it will build a Buick model for the United States at its plant in Ruesselsheim, Germany.

Opel said production would begin in the second half of the decade without naming the model. Opel currently produces the Insignia mid-sized sedan, which shares the same underpinnings as the Buick Regal, at the Ruesselsheim factory near Frankfurt.

Opel also said it will stop exporting vehicles to China in January 2015.

Opel will invest 245 million euros ($336.62 million) to build a new model in Ruesselsheim, the company also said today. It will annouce details of the model before the end of the year.

"With the investment in a new, additional model for Ruesselsheim, we will take another important step in our multi-billion dollar model offensive with which we will pave the way for Opel’s profitable growth," GM President and Opel Supervisory Board Chairman Dan Ammann said in a statement.

Opel said its supervisory board had also given the go ahead for future production of an additional variant of the Insignia. In 2015, it will also add output of the Zafira Tourer minivan at Ruesselsheim.

Building Buicks in Germany will help to improve capacity utilization as GM seeks to end losses at its European operations.

GM is hoping to strengthen both brands by more closely aligning their products, a strategy that could shave development costs and time, and increase their respective product offerings in major global markets, GM executives said in interviews at the 2013 Frankfurt auto show.

Supplier sources said the next-generation Adam minicar, due in late 2018, is being designed and engineered for sale in the United States and possibly in China.

Former GM CEO Dan CEO Dan Akerson said last year that GM is aligning its product development teams much more closely and that would mean more synergies between Opel and Buick.

China costs

The company said it had decided to stop plans to expand in China because such a step would cost a triple-digit million amount. Opel sold only 4,365 cars in China last year, compared with Buick, which sold 810,000 cars.

"This is a long overdue decision," Opel CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann said in the statement. "It would have cost hundreds of millions of euros to raise awareness of the Opel brand [in China] and to expand the distribution network."

The move builds on GM's global reorganization of its brands worldwide. In December, GM said it would pull its Chevrolet brand out of Europe and that its Holden unit would stop manufacturing cars in Australia.

Reuters and Bloomberg contributed to this report

Vauxhall will replace its Meriva and Zafira people carriers with SUV-styled MPVs within the next two years, as well as introducing a luxurious flagship SUV. Our exclusive images show the look of the new trio, which will give Vauxhall direct rivals to Nissan’s highly successful Juke, Qashqai and X-Trail ranges.

Thanks to a partnership with the PSA Peugeot-Citroen Group, the GM brands are forging ahead with plans to replace the Meriva and ageing Zafira MPVs with cars that, they say, are better suited to current market demands.

• Best SUVs to buy now

As our images show, the Meriva and Zafira will ditch their MPV bodies in favour of a high-riding, SUV-style look. Our sources have confirmed that both cars could arrive as soon as 2016.

Fashion

At the recent Paris Motor Show, Vauxhall’s chairman and managing director Tim Tozer told us: “We describe these types of cars as CUVs. These are the cars that in the next generation we’re working with PSA on. We’re committed to cars that can carry all a family needs, but with the style that’s in fashion.”

Image 2 of 11

Now an insider has revealed to Auto Express the brand’s CUV (crossover utility vehicle) plans and thanks to the PSA agreement, the two models will also spawn two new cars from Peugeot or Citroen.

“The Meriva and Zafira will make way for two SUV-style cars jointly developed with the PSA Peugeot-Citroen Group,” we were told. “These cars are core to Vauxhall’s future plans – they have to be replaced, but the development costs are high.

“The PSA Group partnership is 50:50 and the big benefit is scale. There is not sufficient volume in these models for us to invest so we are spreading the cost between us.”

Our source added that one of the new cars would be built by Opel-Vauxhall while the other would be made in a PSA Group factory in Europe. Both plants will have Vauxhall and Peugeot-Citroen models coming off their production lines, although which factory will build which model – Meriva or Zafira – hasn’t yet been agreed.

Image 3 of 11

While the cars will share their architecture and technology with Peugeot-Citroen versions, our source told us the four new models will not look the same – the family association will “not be in tin, but in powertrain and suspension components”.

The insider said: “It’ll only be the media who know of the joint development – the average UK customer will not know these cars came off the same lines. As a guideline to how the Vauxhall and PSA cars will differ, just look at how different the Astra and Peugeot 308 are.”

These two new SUVs are expected to arrive in late 2016, and it’s believed the seven-seater Zafira Tourer will continue to be sold for a while before being replaced completely.

Our images show the replacements will use Vauxhall’s 2.0 design language, which focuses on the front of the car – with a large grille and sizeable air vents in the front bumper – sleek headlights and a rear quarter-light treatment that gives the impression of a floating roof.

Image 4 of 11

Vauxhall and PSA are working hard to downsize their current petrol and diesel engine line-ups, so the Meriva and Zafira replacements will most probably use highly efficient four-cylinder and turbocharged three-cylinder engines.

And our source also hinted at a range- topping SUV. Our image shows a crossover taking design cues from the Monza concept that could provide Vauxhall with the halo car it needs to move its brand perception upmarket.

General Motors boss Mary Barra has revealed that a range-topping Vauxhall SUV is in development.

The new model, announced as part of Barra's trip to Vauxhall parent Opel's Rüsselsheim manufacturing plant, will sit alongside the Insignia and act as the firm's second flagship model.

The SUV forms part of Vauxhall's long-term product plan, announced in June of this year, which aims to bring 27 new models to market by 2018. The new Corsa supermini, upcoming Astra and Viva city car are among the more prominent models to be included in the plan.

Up to 17 new engines will also be introduced as part of the strategy.

While the new SUV will act as a premium flagship for the brand, at least two other high-riding models are likely to appear in the immediate future.

Opel boss Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann revealed earlier this summer that his company was eyeing up a compact crossover to rival the Dacia Duster. Such a model could well form the basis of a replacement for the Meriva MPV.

The Zafira MPV is also due to be replaced in the near future, and like the Meriva is expected to ditch its people-carrier looks in favour of more muscular, SUV-esque styling.

GM has already announced it will invest €245 million into Opel's Rüsselsheim plant to help meet "future requirements" - including the production of the new SUV.

Barra today announced an extra €500 million investment in Opel's engine and transmission plants. She also revealed a third shift is being added at Opel's Eisenach plant to cope with increased demand for the Adam and Corsa.

Barra said: "Opel/Vauxhall is of high strategic importance for GM. The product offensive with 27 new models and 17 new engines has enjoyed a very successful start. These additional investments will help the brands shine again and further strengthen our position in Europe. They are a clear sign of GM’s commitment to Opel/Vauxhall, to Germany and to Europe.

will launch a range-topping SUV before the end of the decade, with the new model combining dramatic coupé-like looks and seven seats with what insiders have described as a “value-for-money price tag”.

The new SUV will be joined by two new crossover models, which will slot between the new Astra and a revamped Insignia, with the result that by 2019 Vauxhall will have four SUV and crossover models in its line-up, including the existing Mokka.

Industry specialists say the boom in crossover and SUV sales is not likely to slow significantly over the next four years. Moreover, Vauxhall’s three MPV models — the Meriva, Zafira and Zafira Tourer — have all suffered sales slides as family-friendly crossovers and SUVs displace the traditional people-carrier.

The flagship SUV was announced in outline form late last year by GM CEO Mary Barra. She revealed that £189 million was being invested in Opel’s Russelsheim factory to update it for the next-generation Insignia and the new SUV. However, Autocar has now obtained more details about the new vehicle and its market positioning.

The large SUV will be based on an updated version of the Insignia’s Epsilon 2 platform, which also underpins Cadillac, Chevrolet and Buick models.

This new platform is being developed under the name ‘E2XX’. According to announcements from GM in the US, the new structure will get a significant 10cm wheelbase stretch (taking it up to a substantial 2.83m), with the whole structure being a substantial 136kg lighter than Epsilon 2 architecture.

Other changes are expected to be made that allow a more radical interior dashboard design to be use, while at the rear, the rear of the floorpan and structure have been further modified to improve luggage space and accommodate a third row of seats in the SUV.

GM sources also say the new structure is being engineered to further improve “real-world” ride and handling.

Work is now well under way on the styling of the new SUV, under design boss Mark Adams. Sources promise a look that will be “dramatic” and much more coupé-like than today’s rival models from Hyundai and Kia.

One company source said Adams’s team was hoping to strike the same sort of balance between usability and dramatic style as that achieved by the Range Rover Evoque. The dashboard design is also expected to be a significant step forward, featuring a large central screen and a reduction in the number of manual controls.

All-wheel drive will be an option, but there’s no news on what the engine range might be. GM Europe has announced significant investment in its engine and transmission plants, so expect a range of new petrol and diesel engines above the 1.4 and 1.6-litre units launched in the new Astra.

Manufacturing the new SUV and the new Insignia on the same production line will also improve the economies of scale involved in making these large cars in Germany. By 2020, the production line could be building nearly 200,000 units a year - a figure that is double today’s numbers.

Well before the big SUV arrives, Vauxhall-Opel will have two new compact crossover models, which will be key to improving sales in Europe.

Both models are being co-developed with PSA Peugeot Citroën on shared platforms. The smaller crossover will replace the Meriva and is expected to go on sale next year.

The Meriva has been something of a success for GM Europe, with sales of original model peaking at 203,000 in 2004 and the Mk2 at 127,000 in 2011. Since then, however, sales have collapsed, slumping to 57,000 last year. Replacing the existing conventional MPV-style model with a crossover is likely to result in a significant sales boost.

The larger crossover model will in effect replace the ancient Antara and the recently axed Zafira MPV, although the bigger and plusher Zafira Tourer will live on. The new medium crossover, which is expected to be the sister car to the new Peugeot 3008, will arrive in 2017.

Vauxhall's four-model plan

2016 Vauxhall Compact crossover - This model, which is being co-developed with PSA, is expected to share a platform with the replacement for the Peugeot 2008. Vauxhall’s version will replace the Meriva baby MPV and be built at the GM factory in Zaragoza, Spain.

2017 Vauxhall Medium crossover - This other co-production with PSA will in effect replace the Zafira seven-seat MPV and the old Antara SUV. PSA’s version will be the new Peugeot 3008.

2017 All-new Vauxhall Insignia - Based on the new E2XX platform, the Insignia will get a significant wheelbase stretch in order to greatly improve rear cabin space and access. Styling is said to be coupé-like, despite the size of the car. The interior will also take a step into the future with extensive use of TFT screens.

2019 Flagship SUV - The big SUV will offer three rows of seats and what is claimed to be the same kind of stand-out styling as the Range Rover Evoque.

Comment - Will the strategy work?

Over the past two decades or so, Vauxhall-Opel’s share of the European car market has halved. In the first half of the 1990s the share was just short of 13%, with sales of 1.5 million vehicles.

Last year total sales hit just 881,000 units, which is significantly less than the 1m vehicles sold in 2010 during the aftermath of the credit crunch. Like other mid-market players, Vauxhall-Opel has been hit both by the rise of brands such as Skoda, Hyundai and Kia and the seemingly endless expansion of the premium brands.

This new strategy for the second half of the decade is clever. Riding the crossover wave is common sense, if a tad slow off the mark. But at the top end, Vauxhall sees an opportunity to step in where the premium makers are failing. It’s not just the showroom price of a premium car that’s high, but also the costs involved in servicing and repairs as the car gets older.

Offering super-slick styling, more radical interiors, no-excuse modern powertrains and “value for money prices and sensible aftermarket costs” could, say planners, open up a useful market niche for the company.
