PARIS -- PSA Group plans to eliminate 1,300 French jobs in 2018 using a new form of voluntary cuts introduced by President Emmanuel Macron, an official for the CFTC union said.

The departures, roughly equivalent to buyouts, are part of 2,200 voluntary job cuts planned this year, CFTC leader Franck Don said on Tuesday.

PSA aims to hire 1,300 workers on permanent French contracts in 2018 along with 2,000 younger staff on internships or time-limited work-study contracts. "The number of new hires and voluntary outplacements will therefore be balanced," the company said in a statement

PSA is among a first handful of companies that have announced plans to use the new flexible labor measures introduced by decree within months of Macron's election last May.

Unions have criticized the so-called collective contractual termination agreements, which let companies negotiate layoffs without having to prove they are in financial difficulties. Clothes retailer Pimkie is seeking union approval to cut 208 jobs under the new measures.

PSA said on Monday that it will cut 250 more jobs at its Vauxhall plant in Ellesmere Port plant in northwest England on top of around 400 cuts announced last year, reducing the plant's output to one shift.

LONDON, Jan 11 (Reuters) - The new boss of Peugeot’s British Vauxhall brand said the future of the carmaker’s Ellesmere Port plant, where a third of the workforce is being cut, is closely linked to Opel-Vauxhall’s sales, which have nosedived in Britain.

Peugeot acquired Vauxhall and Opel last year when it bought General Motors’ loss-making European arm and has been pursuing a restructuring plan to return it to profitability.

On Thursday the French automaker appointed sales and marketing officer Stephen Norman to lead its British Vauxhall brand and Irish Opel unit, just days after the French carmaker announced further job cuts in Britain.

On Monday it said another 250 jobs would go at its Ellesmere Port plant in northwest England, on top of 400 cuts last year, reducing the workforce by a third to make it more efficient, but renewing workers’ fears about the future.

Stephen Norman, who takes over as Vauxhall managing director on Feb. 1, told reporters on Thursday the future of Ellesmere Port was connected to the firm’s sales performance.

“The two are inextricably linked,” Norman said.

“If we manage to make a radical improvement in Vauxhall’s fortunes in the UK and my future colleagues in Opel across the continent do the same in their markets, particularly in Germany, then there will be a requirement not only for every possible unit of production that we’ve got but maybe even more besides.”

Norman will need to turn around sliding sales in what has traditionally been Opel-Vauxhall’s biggest market and where demand fell 22 percent in 2017, compared with an overall market decline of 5.7 percent, according to industry data.

He faces the challenge of defending Ellesmere Port with Peugeot due to decide as soon as this year whether to keep the plant open with new models, in the latest test of Britain’s ability to attract investment as it leaves the European Union.

Norman, who joined PSA Group in May 2014 as Chief Marketing Officer and was appointed Senior Vice President, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer in 2016, said Brexit made planning harder.

“So long as there are two, three or possibly more sets of viable hypotheses (due to Brexit) with different forecasts and different financial parameters, it’s very difficult to make a clear decision,” he said. (Editing by Stephen Addison and Mark Potter)

DETROIT -- PSA Group CEO Carlos Tavares said he planned to meet next week with UK unions and government officials to discuss the future of the automaker's' Vauxhall plant in Ellesmere Port, where Tavares said production costs are twice those of its plants in France.

PSA has already begun cutting jobs at the plant in moves that would reduce the workforce by a third, or 650 jobs. This has provoked protests from unions.

Tavares told reporters during a briefing in Detroit that a hard Brexit which results in tariffs on exports of UK-built vehicles would increase pressure to cut costs.

He said the plant is at efficiency levels similar to where PSA stood four years ago, when Tavares began his turnaround effort at the French automaker.

PSA took over the Ellesmere Port factory, which builds the Astra compact model, last year when it acquired Opel and Vauxhall from General Motors.

"What counts is to bring (UK) plants to the level of cost and quality that is the same as Continental Europe," Tavares said.

'Open' to alliance

Separately, Tavares said he is "very open" to a potential alliance in Latin America. He was responding to a question about Ford's signal two days ago that it was exploring options for its money-losing Latin American business.

Tavares declined to say whether PSA planned to discuss a partnership with Ford. Asked if he had talked with Ford executives, Tavares said, "not so far."

Tavares was in Detroit to promote PSA's plans to gradually re-enter the U.S. market, starting with ride services.

At the Automotive News World Congress he said PSA will offer 40 electrified models across its five brands -- Peugeot, Citroen, Opel, Vauxhall and DS -- worldwide by 2025.

Opel is considering cutting further investment in its Zaragoza plant in Spain after failing to reach a deal with unions on wages and working conditions.

The move would threaten production of the next Corsa subcompact model at the factory.

PSA Group, which acquired Opel from General Motors last year, says the Zaragoza factory is less competitive than its other two plants in Spain due to higher wages, lower hours and lower flexibility.

Zaragoza has been operating since 1982 and has built the Corsa for decades. It employs around 5,300 people and was running at 80 percent capacity in 2017 when it made 382,250 vehicles.

Corsa production could be moved to another factory if an accord cannot be reached, an Opel Spain spokeswoman said. "There will only be investment if a plant is profitable, but the Opel plant in Spain is at a disadvantage to other PSA factories in Spain," the spokeswoman said on Thursday.

Months of talks with unions aiming to increase the plant's competitiveness had failed to reach a deal, she said.

Besides the Corsa, the Zaragoza factory builds the Adam, Crossland X and Mokka cars sold by Opel and the Citroen C3 Aircross, according to Automotive News Europe's car assembly plant map. The Corsa is also built in Eisenach, Germany.

Zaragoza's regional government said it had called for an urgent meeting with Opel bosses to evaluate the situation.

Through November, European sales of the Corsa fell 11 percent to 220,159, according to data from JATO Dynamics.

As it looks to ways to return Opel and sister brand Vauxhall to profit, PSA is cutting jobs at Vauxhall's Ellesmere Port plant in England, which builds the Astra compact, to improve its competitiveness. PSA CEO Carlos Tavares said in September that PSA factories appear to be more productive than plants operated by Opel/Vauxhall.

- Opel denied a report that its loss widened to more than 1 billion euros ($1.24 billion) last year.

Citing boardroom sources, Handelsblatt reported that Opel, which General Motors sold to PSA Group last August, racked up more than 1 billion euros in operational losses in 2017.

In 2016, GM's European business, mainly Opel and its UK sister brand Vauxhall, lost $257 million, an improvement on a $813 million loss in 2015.

An Opel spokesman told Automotive News Europe on Tuesday that the Handelsblatt report was false. "This figure doesn’t exist inside Opel/Vauxhall, as it is not available."

Opel lost money for 19 years under GM ownership. PSA CEO Carlos Tavares hopes to pull off a recovery at the German automaker like he did at PSA, which rebounded from near-bankruptcy. Opel's PACE business plan targets an operating margin of 2 percent in 2020 and 6 percent by 2026.

Tavares has said acquiring Opel will help unlock economies of scale and synergies within the group.

Despite new product launches in 2017 including the Grandland X compact SUV, Opel’s sales slipped 5 percent last year to 936,753, according to data from JATO Dynamics, in a European market that grew 3.3 percent overall.

Opel's losses accelerated toward the end of last year with the company losing around 4 million euros ($4.74 million) every working day, Automobilwoche, a sister publication of Automotive News Europe, reported last September.

Tavares has said Opel's factories are less efficient than PSA's and has cut jobs at Vauxhall’s Ellesmere Port factory in northwest England.

PSA is expected to report Opel results at its 2017 earnings conference on March 1

Buoyant sales of new models helped French carmaker PSA Group (PEUP.PA) shrug off losses at newly acquired Opel to lift 2017 revenue, profit and operating margin to new records.

PSA shares surged as much as 8 percent on Thursday after the maker of Peugeot, Citroen, Opel and Vauxhall cars said net income rose 11.5 percent to 1.93 billion euros ($2.35 billion) on a 20.7 percent revenue increase to 65.21 billion.

Rebounding from a 2012 brush with bankruptcy, PSA is pursuing an ambitious turnaround under Chief Executive Carlos Tavares, former second-in-command to Renault (RENA.PA) boss Carlos Ghosn. The group is also racing to bring the Opel lineup into compliance with EU carbon emissions targets.

“We have a very agile company, and we know how to move around the chaos,” Tavares told reporters and analysts in a presentation at group headquarters.

Operating income jumped by almost a quarter to 3.99 billion euros even after a 179 million euro Opel loss since the Aug. 1 consolidation of the former General Motors (GM.N) business. The group-wide automotive operating margin edged down to 5.9 percent from 6 percent.

Strong sales of a revamped Peugeot 3008 compact SUV and Citroen C3 mini improved PSA’s product mix, lifting operating profit by 904 million euros and revenue by 4.5 percent, excluding Opel. French rival Renault also posted record full-year sales and profits last month.

PSA shares were up 6.6 percent to 19.85 euros at 1140 GMT, the biggest rise by a European blue-chip stock and extending their gains so far this year to around 10 percent.

Reiterating 2021 goals that include a 6 percent automotive margin without Opel, compared with 7.3 percent in 2017, Chief Financial Officer Jean-Baptiste de Chatillon said the targets would be reviewed next year and hinted they could be raised.

“Let’s see in 2019,” Chatillon told reporters when asked about the likelihood of a guidance increase. “We’re certainly doing quite well right now.”

PSA’s full-year results beat analyst expectations of 1.9 billion euros in net income, 3.53 billion in operating profit and 64.68 billion in revenue, based on the median estimates in an Inquiry Financial poll for Reuters.

While Opel burned through 1.46 billion euros in cash in the last five months of 2017, Bernstein analyst Max Warburton said he saw room for strong improvement in working capital that accounted for about one-third of the drain.

“The core business is so handsomely profitable that it gives PSA time and flexibility to sort out Opel,” Warburton said.

In a sign of the stiff challenge posed by tightening EU emissions targets and declining sales of fuel-efficient diesels, however, CEO Tavares implicitly criticized governments for the slow rollout of electric-car charging networks.

Financial penalties for non-compliance should be reduced where charging infrastructure remains inadequate, Tavares said in a Financial Times interview published on Thursday. “Consumers will not buy (electric) cars that they are not able to charge.”

The French carmaker raised its proposed dividend to 0.53 euros per share from the 0.48 euro payout on 2016 earnings.

Was macht sie da so sicher?
Nennen Sie bitte Beispiele.

Opel leidet seit Jahren an strukturellen Problemen.
