Volkswagen will endlich mit Billigautos punkten

Skoda’s CEO Bernhard Maier has an ambitious vision for the company’s future. Volkswagen’s Czech arm wants to conquer the Indian car market on behalf of the VW group. “We could start selling cars in India in early 2021,” Mr. Maier told Handelsblatt in an exclusive interview. “In a first step, we are planning a production of more than 300,000 cars per year,” he said.

Skoda is developing a platform for Volkswagen, which is set to produce affordable and smaller cars targeted for the Indian market. Volkswagen owns production sites in India, where Skoda is planning to produce these vehicles. “We will only be able to stay within our budget by producing them on site in India,” Mr. Maier said. In the long term, the VW Group wants to gain a market share of 5 percent in India.

It is not an easy undertaking, as competition is fierce in India, the 58-year-old admitted. Volkswagen has been unsuccessful twice in trying to secure a partner in India for budget cars. In August last year, talks collapsed between VW and India’s Tata Motors about jointly producing a car for customers in India and beyond. An earlier alliance with Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corp failed in 2015.

“We are aware of our responsibility and will continue to contribute to the reduction of emissions through clean and innovative technologies.”
Bernhard Maier, CEO, Skoda
Foreign carmakers like Volkswagen are trying to break into one of the biggest and most promising car markets. India could become the world’s third-largest car market by 2020 after China and the United States. Three million cars are sold annually in the world’s second most populous nation, but this number could rise to six million within a few years.

Maruti Suzuki dominates the Indian car market with an impressive market share of 49.6 percent followed by Hyundai Motor India, Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors, according to the Society of Indian Auto Mobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

While inexpensive smaller models are particularly popular in developing countries like India, Mr. Maier suggested that a price point of $5000 per car could be difficult to meet. As technical requirements in terms of emissions and safety are tightening in India, so will costs. “The exhaust and safety standards in India will be closely tied to European levels in 2021,” Mr. Maier said.

Speaking of emissions: Volkswagen’s Dieselgate scandal also had an impact on Skoda. But Mr. Maier is convinced: “Diesel has a future, there’s no doubt. For frequent travelers on long journeys, the diesel remains worthwhile.” But, he added, “natural gas and affordable hybrid systems are interesting alternatives.”

The recent landmark ruling allowing German cities to ban diesel vehicles has led to “great uncertainty” among people who are dependent on their car every day, he added. “Regardless of this, we are aware of our responsibility and will continue to contribute to the reduction of nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide emissions through clean and innovative technologies,” Mr. Maier said.

Taking this into account, Skoda is currently hashing out details for the biggest investment program in the company’s history: an electric car expansion. “We will invest €2 billion ($2.46 billion) in electric mobility and automation over the next five years,” Mr. Maier told Handelsblatt. By 2025, Skoda will offer 10 different e-vehicles, he said.

Skoda, headquartered in Mladá Boleslav, is the biggest company in the Czech Republic. Currently, it produces about 1.2 million vehicles a year at 15 sites. By the middle of the next decade, this number could rise to 2 million, Mr. Maier said.

India is not the only market Skoda is focusing on. Mr. Maier said Skoda planned to double car sales in China to 600,000 by 2020. SUVs are gaining popularity in China, where the segment grows at a higher rate than in Europe. That is why Skoda will launch two new SUV models in China. The country is already the biggest market worldwide for the company.

The Volkswagen Group board is set to give the go-ahead for an estimated €1 billion (approximately Rs 8,000 crore) investment by its Czech subsidiary, Skoda Auto, to revive its operations in the Indian market. The revival plan is known internally as ‘India 2.0.’ Autocar India had first reported Skoda’s plans to take the lead in developing products for the VW Group, for India and emerging markets. An official announcement is expected to be made later this month, which will officially put Skoda in charge of the VW Group’s India operations.

As a first step, Skoda is likely to take over VW’s Chakan plant, which will be the production base for a slew of future high-volume models Skoda plans to develop. However, according to company sources, the transfer of the Chakan plant from Volkswagen to Skoda could face hurdles due to complicated structural issues between the two companies that would first have to be resolved.

A large part of the proposed investment would be used for retooling the Chakan plant and building a new production line to manufacture cars built on the MQB platform, the current global architecture that underpins almost all small and mid-size VW Group cars. A new engine plant - to manufacture MPI and TSI derivatives of the EA211 petrol engine family - is also likely to be a part of the fresh investment.

The MQB production line will be built in parallel to the existing line that will continue to produce cars built on the older PQ25 platform, such as the Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Vento, Ameo and Polo. However, the older model range will eventually be phased out by around 2020 and be replaced by a fresh model line-up, built on the MQB platform, which will include - for the first time - a mid-size SUV, followed by a sedan and a hatchback for each of the respective brands.

The first model for both, VW and Skoda, will be a mid-size SUV that’ll rival the Hyundai Creta. Speaking exclusively to Autocar India on the sidelines of the Geneva motor show, Oliver Stefani, Skoda’s head of design, hinted that the SUV could borrow design cues from the Vision X concept, a compact SUV positioned below the Kodiaq and Karoq. “What we are looking at is a car that will draw inspiration from the Vision X, but, after my recent visit to India, I have realised we would need to offer more space in the rear”, said Stefani.

Styling of Skoda's Creta rival likely to mirror that of the Vision X concept.
The VW equivalent for India is likely to mimic the VW T-Cross’ design, but in the quest to dramatically reduce costs - a prerequisite for entering the Indian market - the Skoda and VW SUVs could share some body panels. Talking exclusively to Autocar India, VW’s global head Herbert Diess, said “It is common for us to share some body panels, like just the side body panels and still have products that look very different.”

Volkswagen's mid-size SUV for India will borrow design cues from the T-Cross.
What’s clear is that there will be no more ‘badge-engineered’ products like the Skoda Rapid and VW Vento, and each brand will get products that are clearly differentiated with their own distinctive design.

The next-generation Vento and Rapid, which have been long overdue, are expected soon after the mid-size SUV. Again, these will be all-new cars donning a completely new look. The current Vento has been criticised for looking too understated, and it’s likely that the next-gen model will be designed with more flair to suit local tastes.

The VW and Skoda hatchbacks will come last as – for them to be profitable at the lower price point they’d be pegged at – they need to be produced in large volumes with a high level of local content.

VW will reduce the length of the latest generation Polo to under four metres for India.
This would mean expanding and upgrading the dealer network for higher sales and focusing on deep localisation to drive costs down, which takes time. The VW hatchback will essentially be the latest-gen European Polo but snipped to under four metres in length to get the ‘small car’ tax advantage. For Skoda, the hatchback could mean the return of the Fabia, which was discontinued in 2014.

A new range of petrol engines - starting with a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated (MPI), three-cylinder motor developing a modest 76hp - are expected to power the next-gen Polo and Skoda hatch. In fact, this new engine just made its debut in the current Polo. The four-cylinder 1.2 TSI that powers the current Vento is likely to be replaced with a more efficient three-cylinder 1.0 TSI turbo-petrol developing 115hp. The 1.0 TSI will also finally replace the Rapid’s ageing 1.6 MPI petrol (EA111).

Skoda could bring the Fabia back to India; it had been discontinued back in 2014.
A big challenge will be the lack of a diesel engine for some of these new-generation cars. VW’s decision to not upgrade the 1.5-litre EA189 diesel motor (which was at the heart of the diesel scandal) to BS-VI standards will, in effect, spell its demise after the new emission norms come into play in April 2020. The only locally produced diesel engine option for the entire VW Group after 2020 will be the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder EA288, which will be a good option for the mid-size SUV but not for the mid-size sedans and hatchbacks that need a small-capacity diesel motor.

With no replacement for the EA189 1.5 diesel being developed, both VW and Skoda will have a petrol-only option for their smaller cars. This would limit sales to an extent, as the market share for small diesel cars in India, though shrinking, will still be substantial. To find more volumes, VW and Skoda India will increase their focus on export markets as well.

This new innings for Skoda, in India, means life has come full circle for the Czech carmaker. It was the lead brand for the VW Group when it first came to India, in 1999, and after nearly 20 years, it’s entrusted with that responsibility again. But, it’s not a done deal till the VW Group board finally signs off the ‘India 2.0’ project.

Mumbai: Skoda Auto India Pvt. Ltd, tasked by parent Volkswagen AG to lead the group’s India operations, will present an ambitious India investment plan of more than 1 billion euros to the German company’s board in two-three weeks.

If approved, this will be the largest inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) into the Indian auto sector.

Skoda India seeks to create the Volkswagen (VW) group’s first engineering centre in India and simplify the business structure of the group in the country, according to two people aware of the development.

The company also seeks to build at least six new body styles on the MQB (Modular Transverse Matrix) platform and develop India as an export base for such models, the two people cited above said, requesting anonymity.

The VW board will evaluate the strategy and take a decision within two months, said one of the two people with direct knowledge of the matter.

“Skoda has been entrusted with the responsibility of driving VW Group operations in India and Russia. According to that, the Indian team has prepared a business plan that proposes to invest more than €1 billion in India—the single largest such investment in the sector,” the person said.

Email queries sent to Skoda India did not receive responses till press time.

Seeking to drive greater volume on a global level, VW, at the end of 2016, decided to task the local subsidiary of the Czech carmaker with the entire re-development of the MQB platform—the current global architecture that underpins almost all small and mid-size VW group cars—for developing countries, including India. Mint reported this first in August.

The move was result of a feasibility study that VW had conducted on its partnership with Tata Motors Ltd, which was later called off.

Skoda has not really picked up pace in the Indian car market after debuting more than 15 years ago.

According to data provided by industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam), Skoda India clocked a mere 17,387 units in FY18 sales, an increase of 26.8% from a year ago. In comparison, India’s luxury car market leader Mercedes-Benz India Pvt. Ltd sold 15,330 units during the period.

Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd sold 45,329 units in the fiscal year gone by, a decline of 22.5% from a year ago.

At least six new body styles will be developed by Skoda India, starting from the B-segment, according to the new business plan, Mint has learned. These include small cars such as the Hyundai i20, Suzuki Swift and Skoda’s own Fabia.

While some of the new brands will be introduced based on the MQB platform, the plan is to retain the premium models of both Skoda and Volkswagen. The new models will have “significantly different styling” so that they can be used by both Skoda and Volkswagen.

There are also plans to simplify the structure of VW group companies in India, as the current structure does not give complete authority to any of the group’s Indian subsidiaries such as VW, Skoda or Audi. While these subsidiaries have their independent sales and service units, they share two manufacturing units in Aurangabad and Chakan, which are affiliated to an independent entity.

:leggi

INDIA 2.0’: Volkswagen Group invests one billion euros in project led by ŠKODA AUTO

Volkswagen Group is investing one billion euros in the implementation of the project
Together, ŠKODA AUTO and Volkswagen will develop new models in the A0 segment for the Indian market
The first model to appear as part of the project will be an A0 SUV – to be showcased in 2020
Technical development of new products will predominantly take place in India to ensure closest proximity to the market

ŠKODA Member of the Board for Sales and Marketing, Alain Favey, ŠKODA CEO Bernhard Maier, Managing Director of ŠKODA AUTO India Private Ltd Gurpratap Boparai and ŠKODA Member of the Board for Finance and IT, Klaus-Dieter Schürmann (from left to right) today at the press conference concerning the project „INDIA 2.0“ in New Delhi.

ŠKODA AUTO CEO Bernhard Maier and Gurpratap Boparai, Managing Director of ŠKODA AUTO India Private Ltd, announced details of the ‘INDIA 2.0’ project at a press conference in New Delhi today.

Going forward ŠKODA AUTO is responsible for leading Volkswagen Group’s planned model campaign on the Indian market. Volkswagen Group is investing one billion euros into the implementation of the project, primarily between 2019 and 2021. To ensure closest-possible proximity to the market, a project centre is being set up in India where, for example, vehicle development will take place.

ŠKODA AUTO CEO Bernhard Maier said, “Experts predict that in the next few years India is going to become the third-largest automotive market worldwide. With our ‘INDIA 2.0’ project we are now creating the right conditions for sustainable growth there. Our objective is ambitious, but achievable: together with the Volkswagen brand, we are seeking a market share of up to five per cent in the long term, depending on market and segment development.”

Gurpratap Boparai, Managing Director of ŠKODA AUTO India Private Ltd, added, “With the ‘INDIA 2.0’ project, ŠKODA AUTO and Volkswagen Group are in an excellent position to optimally confront the dynamics of the Indian car market. In India, we will offer top-class products at prices that amount to a paradigm shift in the automotive industry. We will manufacture the new products locally based on the heavily localised MQB A0 platform, which already fulfils the stricter emission and safety standards that are expected to come into force in India in 2020.”

Initially, ŠKODA AUTO is developing the sub-compact MQB A0 platform with a focus on India (MQB-A0-IN). In the second phase, ŠKODA will be assessing the possibility of exporting vehicles manufactured in India. ŠKODA and Volkswagen will develop several products based on this platform. The model campaign will begin in 2020 with an SUV.

To ensure that the planned models will fulfil the requirements of Indian customers to the utmost extent, ŠKODA AUTO is looking to be as close to the market as possible from the very start. The technical development of the new products will therefore predominantly take place in India. To this end, the car manufacturer plans to gradually create new jobs.

In July 2018, the Volkswagen Group announced investments of around one billion euros as part of the INDIA 2.0 project. In January 2019, a new technology centre was opened in Pune, India, where vehicles will be developed based on the localised MQB-A0-IN subcompact platform, tailored to the wishes and requirements of local customers. The first step in the model campaign will involve ŠKODA AUTO Volkswagen India Private Limited launching a mid-size SUV model that will be available from both ŠKODA and Volkswagen. The company will be presenting the studies at the Auto Expo 2020, which is held in New Delhi from 6 to 9 February 2020.
