more than 14,000 salaried staff and factory workers and close seven factories worldwide by the end of next year, part of a sweeping realignment to prepare for a future of electric and self-driving vehicles.

Four factories in the U.S. and one in Canada could be shuttered by the end of 2019 if the automaker and its unions don’t come up with an agreement to allocate more work to those facilities, GM said in a statement Monday. Another two will close outside North America. The Detroit-based company’s shares surged on the plan, which includes abandoning some of its slower-selling sedan models.

The planned job reductions, which triggered political pushback in the Midwest U.S. and Canada, come on the heels of surprisingly strong third-quarter earnings. GM Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra is trying to make the company leaner as U.S. auto demand slides from a record in 2016 and sales in China -- GM’s other profit center -- are also in a slump. Barra is also shifting resources toward building electric cars and, eventually, vehicles that drive themselves.

“We’re taking these actions while the economy is strong,” Barra told reporters in Detroit. “This industry is changing very rapidly. We want to make sure we’re well-positioned. We think it’s appropriate to do it while company is strong and the economy is strong.”

GM jumped as much as 7.9 percent to $38.75, the highest since July, as of 12:20 p.m. in New York trading. The stock is still down about 7 percent this year.

The plan to lop 15 percent of salaried workers follows a round of buyouts that GM offered to about a quarter of its longer-tenured workforce at the end of October. GM said the cuts will boost automotive free cash flow by $6 billion by the end of 2020 and result in one-time charges of up to $3.8 billion in the fourth quarter of this year and first quarter of 2019.

GM also said that the company will jettison the Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Impala and Cadillac CT6 sedans next year. The Chevy Volt plug-in hybrid will also be dropped along with the Chevy Cruze compact, which will be made in Mexico for other markets.

Too many of GM’s factories are operating on a single shift to build models that have fallen out of favor, leading its plants to run about 1 million vehicles short of their full capacity, said Kristin Dziczek, vice president of industry, labor and economics for the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

"Most of the one-shift plants are sedan plants,” Dziczek said. “That’s a real mismatch in a market where 40 percent of the vehicles sold are crossover utilities.”

The likely shutdowns have already opened up GM to political pushback, with Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeting that he has expressed “deep disappointment” with Barra directly. The U.S. plants are in places that have been economically devastated by job losses and pressure on wages for decades, which helped lead to the 2016 election of Donald Trump as U.S. president.

U.S. Senator Rob Portman, a Republican from Ohio, said he’s “deeply frustrated” with GM’s decision to shut down a plant in Lordstown and is pressing Barra to come up with an alternative product for the factory.

A White House spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Barra is reducing staff from operations that make conventional cars and hiring people who can design electric cars or add software prowess to GM Cruise LLC, the automaker’s autonomous vehicle unit in San Francisco. That means GM needs to allocate more resources to purely electric cars, unlike the hybrid Volt, and to autonomous technology, Barra said.

GM is cutting more than 6,300 hourly and salaried workers at its plants and 15 percent of the salaried workers in North America for a total of more than 14,000. The totals are imprecise in part because there may be some double-counting with employees who are taking the October buyout offer.

The company has marked a sedan plant in Detroit, a compact car plant in Ohio, and another assembly plant outside Toronto for possible closure. Also at risk are two transmission plants, one outside Detroit and another in Baltimore.

While GM is buying out and laying off workers in its core auto operations, the automaker has added close to 1,000 people in the past year at Cruise.

Tesla

Tesla

February 2.485
March 3.820
April 3.875
May 6.250

July 30 14.250
August 75 17.800
September 115 22.250
October 145 17.750

Cadillac, the brand that pioneered the electric starter at the dawn of the automotive age, has been tapped to lead General Motors' march toward an all-electric future and a new era of vehicle development.
GM plans to use the 117-year-old luxury brand as a catalyst to launch and expand electrified technologies across its lineup. A Cadillac vehicle will be the first to ride on GM's next-generation EV platform in 2021.

Reuss: Big outlay for EVs
"In short," he said at a presentation to investors last week in New York, "Cadillac is going to be about Cadillac once again."
The move marks a departure from GM's strategy of using the bread-and-butter Chevrolet brand as the focus of its electrified vehicles after its 2009 bankruptcy, starting with the Volt plug-in hybrid and later the all-electric Bolt EV. It reflects a bet that Cadillac is better equipped to project GM's credentials as a technological innovator against the likes of Tesla Inc. and that luxury customers will be less sensitive than Chevy buyers to the price premiums that electric powertrains carry.
‘The real answer'
Since plug-in vehicles began hitting the market in the earlier part of the decade, Cadillac's competitors have been moving aggressively to adopt electrified powertrains, particularly plug-in hybrids, as they prepare for stricter regulations in China and Europe.
Reuss said GM will prioritize investments on EV propulsion systems over traditional internal combustion engines. Hybrids, he said, will not be part of GM's future in the U.S., though it was unclear if he was referring to plug-in hybrids such as the Volt, which GM plans to discontinue in the U.S. GM also dropped a plug-in version of the Cadillac CT6 sedan from its U.S. lineup. But last year, it introduced the Buick Velite 6, a plug-in hybrid similar to the Volt, for China.
Reuss said GM has chosen to spend resources "on getting the real answer," which is zero-emission vehicles. GM has already committed to launching at least 20 new or redesigned battery EVs or fuel cell-powered vehicles globally by 2023, as part of a broader corporate mission of "zero crashes, zero emissions, zero congestion."

Getting ahead of global regulations will be an important motivator for Cadillac, which has relied on China as a key driver of growth in recent years. A substantial number of the new Cadillac EVs will be going to China, GM said.
In 2017, China became Cadillac's No. 1 market — years earlier than the company's executives expected. Even as China's market slowed last year, Cadillac's sales there rose 17 percent to 205,605 vehicles, compared with a 1.1 percent decline, to 154,702 vehicles, in the U.S.
img02GM believes Cadillac "will continue its strong momentum in China" despite growing headwinds such as a near-term market downturn and pricing and regulatory pressures, said GM China President Matt Tsien.
In China, as in the U.S., Cadillac plans to introduce a new or redesigned model every six months on average through 2021, a timetable that began with the launch of the XT4 last year.
Overall, GM plans to introduce more than 20 new, redesigned or freshened vehicles in China in 2019, some of which are expected to be among the 10 new-energy vehicles — a Chinese regulatory category that includes full-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids — planned by 2020. GM then plans to double its new-energy vehicle lineup in China by 2023, Tsien said.
Exclusive ride
GM's major push toward electrification will begin with the introduction of the company's next-generation EV platform, known as BEV3. Reuss said the platform will be exclusive to Cadillac for an undisclosed period.
A slide for the investor event showed 11 potential model types emanating from BEV3 — from small crossovers and cars to vans and seven-passenger SUVs. No pickups were featured in the graphic.
"BEV3 is the canvas upon which we will paint a profitable EV program," Reuss said, citing it as the reason the company is "so bullish" on its EV plans.
For now, Reuss said, profits from GM's pickups and full-size SUVs will be "carrying a lot of the weight" for covering the costs of its future technologies.Reuss has said GM is doubling the resources allocated to electric and autonomous vehicle programs in the next two years.
The EV strategy was part of a bullish presentation that cheered GM investors last week, pushing its shares up 7 percent on Friday, Jan. 11. GM said it expects to boost earnings this year in the aftermath of a strong 2018 that exceeded its guidance and internal expectations.
Positioned to perform well
The healthy 2019 forecast includes earnings of $6.50 to $7 a share and adjusted free cash flow between $4.5 billion and $6 billion. That compares with 2018 earnings guidance of $5.80 to $6.20 a share and automotive free cash flow of $4 billion. GM said it expects to beat those numbers when it reports year-end results Feb. 6.
CEO Mary Barra said GM is positioned to perform well "regardless of external factors" affecting the automaker and overall industry.
GM's ongoing restructuring, which includes reducing its North American salaried work force by 15 percent and closing as many as five North American plants, will result in cost savings of $2 billion to $2.5 billion this year, CFO Dhivya Suryadevara said.
GM expects total U.S. industry sales — including medium- and heavy-duty trucks — to be in the low 17 million range this year. Total industry sales last year were roughly 17.7 million, including light-vehicle sales of 17.3 million.

Riuscira´finalmente Cadillac a rifiorire?

General Motors' Brazil unit is in advanced talks with Sao Paulo state to receive tax incentives, the company told public officials and union representatives at a meeting on Tuesday, a few days after telling workers in a memo that it was losing money in the country.

GM's top executives in South America attended the meeting along with union representatives and mayors of the two cities where the automaker's Sao Paolo state plants are based. Two officials representing the two cities told Reuters GM disclosed the tax incentive discussions at the meeting.

"They told us that the conversation with the state is very advanced, very positive," said Alberto Marques Filho, secretary of innovation for the city of São Jose dos Campos, where one GM plant is based and where the meeting took place.

GM declined to comment.

A representative for the state government said in a statement it has "been working to show the public that it is advantageous to keep the company in Sao Paulo."

GM's dominance

GM is the undisputed market leader for small cars and trucks in Latin America's largest economy, but it was not revealed until recently that the automaker was losing money there.

Earlier this month, GM CEO Mary Barra said the company had lowered its break-even point in the region in recent years by 40 percent, but it still faced "unacceptable losses that need to be addressed."

"We've begun work with key local stakeholders, dealers, suppliers, unions and government officials to take all necessary actions to generate acceptable returns in the near term or to consider other options," she added at an investor presentation on Jan. 11.

Worker warnings

GM posted a memo in its plants in Brazil warning workers that it had experienced deep losses in the past two years and could not keep operating that way. GM has yet to comment on the memo, which was seen by Reuters.

GM, which is undergoing a global restructuring, also has announced thousands of layoffs in the United States and Canada. It also plans to shut two plants outside the United States which it has not yet identified.

The automaker is also looking to negotiate future investments with its unions, the governments of cities where it operates, and suppliers, said José Auricchio, the mayor of another GM plant location, Sao Caetano do Sul.

Auricchio and Marques Filho said GM had told them at the meeting that the governor of Sao Paulo, Joao Doria, had personally participated in five meetings with the automaker to discuss tax incentives.

The memo added that any turnaround plan for GM would require "sacrifices from everyone."

Last year, Brazil's federal government granted carmakers with local plants a 15-year package of tax breaks, extending subsidies for an industry that has struggled to compete.

Economy Minister Paulo Guedes, who took office with a new government this month, has said Brazil cannot afford to keep subsidizing powerful industries, arguing that an end to protectionist policies will make the economy more competitive.

General Motors' self-driving unit Cruise is backing off plans to deploy autonomous taxis by the end of this year, the latest indication of how auto and tech companies are struggling with the challenges of taking humans out from behind the wheel.

Automotive News reported in June that Cruise faced regulatory and technical hurdles in meeting its goal of launching a fleet of autonomous taxis by the end of 2019.

While Cruise is accelerating efforts to get its autonomous Chevrolet Bolts ready, it’s not going to be able to validate their performance and safety in time for 2019, CEO Dan Ammann said in an interview and blog post. GM set that target a year and half ago, with Ammann -- then the president of the automaker -- saying they could “change the world.”

GM's Cruise is the latest company in the burgeoning autonomous-driving space, which has drawn billions in investment, to run into speed bumps. Google affiliate Waymo planned to be the first to start a driverless ride-hailing service before the end of last year. But by the time the calendar flipped to 2019, it was only available to about 400 test families in suburban Phoenix, and its entire fleet of Chrysler minivans still had drivers behind the wheel.

Of course, the consequences of blowing deadlines pale in comparison to fatal crashes. An Uber Technologies test vehicle killed a pedestrian crossing the road in Arizona in March 2018, and at least three Tesla customers have died on U.S. roads while using its Autopilot system.

While Cruise won’t have autonomous taxis ready this year, its CEO says a public deployment isn’t far off. There’s “a clear line of sight” for the company to roll out self-driving cars in San Francisco next year, he said in the interview.

To pull this off, Cruise is rapidly expanding testing in the city, building out its electric-car charging infrastructure to power the vehicles and working with government officials and the community to prepare for the debut.

“There is a specific reason we are moving ahead with the next steps of scaling up infrastructure and scaling up tech,” Ammann said by phone. “Cruise cars are a very present thing and will be even more present. It’s going to be clear that we’re up to something, and that something is around the corner.”

Greater challenge

With Cruise missing its goal, it’s becoming clearer that AV software is a greater technological challenge than many had anticipated. When Volkswagen Group announced earlier this month that it would invest in and partner with Ford’s autonomous-car affiliate Argo AI, the latter was candid about how much work still remained.

“You see all kinds of crazy things on the road, and it turns out they’re not all that infrequent, but you have to be able to handle all of them,” Argo CEO Bryan Salesky said at the time, adding that scenes of driverless cars going anywhere are still “way in the future.”

In China, the world’s largest auto market, the man widely known as the father of the country’s electric-car industry recently voiced doubts about vehicles zipping around entirely on autopilot.

In his blog post, Ammann wrote that the stakes of safety are too high try out Cruise’s tech with the public and iterate the way tech companies might otherwise do with new software.

“When you’re working on the large-scale deployment of mission-critical safety systems, the mindset of ‘move fast and break things’ certainly doesn’t cut it,” Ammann wrote. “With such high stakes, our first deployment needs to be done right and we will only deploy when we can demonstrate that we will have a net-positive impact on safety on our roads.”

Big investments

GM Cruise has raised $7.25 billion, with T. Rowe Price Associates being the latest to invest at a valuation that has steadily risen to $19 billion. SoftBank Group’s Vision Fund and Honda have also put money into the company, and GM Cruise now has about 1,500 employees. When its San Francisco fast-charging station is ready, it will be the largest in the U.S., Ammann said.

The first deployment of GM Cruise’s technology will be in a car similar to the electric Chevrolet Bolt that the company has been testing. In the future, there will be a new model, Amman wrote in the blog post. GM, Cruise and Honda engineers have been developing an electric vehicle designed for self-driving and ride-hailing services, he said.

Ammann said he’s being cautious about deploying the technology in cars on public roads, and making sure the public is ready. Any snafu could set back regulatory and public support.

“Society is looking for these advancements to be brought out in a different kind of way,” he said in the interview. “Underlying that is really this goal to gain wide-scale acceptance of the tech. To get full-scale buy-in, it’s really important that we do it the right way.”

General Motors Co. will revive the Hummer name to sell a new family of electric pickups and SUVs and will tout the return with a Super Bowl ad featuring NBA star LeBron James, two people briefed on the matter said on Friday.

The vehicles will be sold under the GMC nameplate.

Reuters reported in October that GM planned to build a new family of premium electric pickups at its Detroit-Hamtramck plant beginning in late 2021 and was considering reviving the Hummer name, citing several people familiar with the plans.

The Wall Street Journal reported GM's decision to move forward earlier on Friday. GM declined to comment.

GM is considering selling the battery-powered truck in existing dealerships under the marketing name “Hummer by GMC,” Bloomberg reported Friday.

GM also has a large SUV in the works for Hummer. It will be produced soon after the pickup truck if the brand relaunch proves successful, Bloomberg reported.

If the company follows through with that plan, it would address the two biggest problems that doomed Hummer 10 years ago: its gas-guzzling image and its costly network of stand-alone showrooms.

Hummer, a rugged, off-road brand with roots in the military, was dropped in 2010 after GM's 2009 bankruptcy that also resulted in the demise of Pontiac, Saturn and Saab. GM eventually shuttered Hummer after a deal to sell the brand to an obscure Chinese machinery maker was blocked by Chinese regulators.

GM acquired the Hummer brand in 1998 and sales of the vehicle peaked in 2006 before declining precipitously at the end of that decade as gasoline prices soared, hurting demand for the 10-miles-per-gallon Hummer H2.

GM plans to build four electric vehicles at its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant in Michigan by the end of 2023, LMC Automotive told Automotive News in November.

Detroit-Hamtramck was one of four U.S. plants slated to close last year as part of a sweeping restructuring plan, but it was spared by the new labor contract with the automaker that UAW members ratified in October.

GM agreed to invest $3 billion and use the factory to build electric pickups and vans.

Production of the rumored Hummer and another EV likely will start in 2021. It will be followed by electric Sierras and Escalades in 2023, LMC Automotive said.

The investment moves the automaker into a part of the EV market that is largely untested and where GM has a higher likelihood of turning a profit, analysts said.

Ford Motor Co., Tesla Inc. and upstart Rivian are also planning electric pickups.

Electric versions of pickups and SUVs – the heart of the U.S. market – could help Ford and GM generate the significant sales of EVs they will need to meet tougher emission standards and electric vehicle mandates in California and other states.

The Trump administration is moving to roll back those standards – and eliminate extra credits that automakers receive from EV sales – but the electric trucks are a hedge if California prevails.

General Motors Co. will leave Australia, New Zealand and Thailand by year-end as it exits poor-performing markets and focuses on new technologies such as self-driving cars and electric vehicles.

The largest U.S. automaker will take $1.1 billion in charges mostly in the first quarter, of which $300 million is cash, to cover the costs of leaving those markets, it said in a statement. The restructuring marks the end of the 164-year-old Holden brand in Australia, while in Thailand, GM is withdrawing the Chevrolet badge and selling its Rayong plant to China’s Great Wall Motor Co.

Chief Executive Officer Mary Barra is shrinking GM to the point where it gets almost all of its profits from the Americas and China. She’s reducing the company’s global presence and betting on technology rather than pouring money into struggling markets.

“I’ve often said that we will do the right thing, even when it’s hard, and this is one of those times,” Barra said in the statement. “We have the right strategies to drive robust returns, and prioritizing global investments that will drive growth in the future of mobility.”

The downsizing is part of a long-running strategy at GM since the Detroit-based company emerged from bankruptcy in 2009. The company pulled the Chevrolet brand from Europe in 2015, left Russia that same year and sold its German Opel unit and British Vauxhaul brand to France’s Peugeot SA in 2017.

The company will wind down sales, design and engineering operations in Australia and New Zealand and retire the Holden brand by 2021. GM President Mark Reuss ran Holden in 2008 and 2009, but since then its market share has fallen to 4.1% from almost 13%.

The reorganization kills off an Australian icon. Holden produced the country’s first wholly locally made car in 1948. By the end of the century, the Commodore sedan was the country’s best-selling car and remained so until 2011.

Australia’s Dying Manufacturers Get No Aid From Weak Dollar (2)

But the brand’s future in Australia has been in doubt since GM closed its Holden factory in the South Australian suburb of Elizabeth in 2017. The company has been struggling in Australia for several years with low sales volumes and high manufacturing costs.

As GM downsizes overseas, the company is pouring money into electric vehicles in a bid to catch Tesla Inc. GM has already spent several billions to develop self-driving cars with Cruise LLC, which it bought in 2016.

With Australia and New Zealand being chopped from GM’s global network of markets, the company’s primary focus other than the U.S. will be China, Mexico and South America
