Ford said on Monday it had started negotiations with German worker representatives about potential job cuts at its Saarlouis plant following a decision to discontinue production of its Ford C-Max model.

"We can confirm that we are entering into formal negotiations with our Works Council with the objective of ending production of C-Max/Grand C-Max at Saarlouis," Ford said in a statement.

"As we continue to match production to consumer demand, the consultation process also will include necessary adjustments to the workforce at Saarlouis."

Saarlouis employs more than 6,190 staff, but the van segment is shrinking and tougher emissions rules will require costly investments.

"Keeping the vehicle compliant with all regulatory obligations would require a very high level of investment for this model," Ford said.

Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE) and Ford Motor Co (F.N) said on Tuesday they will join forces on commercial vans and pickups and are exploring joint development of electric and self-driving technology, actions meant to save the automakers billions of dollars.

Ford and VW announced their partnership against the backdrop of the Detroit auto show. The tie-up, which starts with sales of vans and medium-sized pickups in 2022, will not involve a merger or equity stakes, the companies said.

“It is no secret that our industry is undergoing fundamental change, resulting from widespread electrification, ever stricter emission regulation, digitization, the shift towards autonomous driving, and not least the changing customer preferences,” Volkswagen Chief Executive Herbert Diess told reporters and analysts on a conference call.

“Carmakers around the globe therefore are investing heavily to align their portfolios to future needs and accelerate their innovation cycles,” he added. “In such an environment, it just makes sense to share investment.”

A deal centered around vans and pickups had been expected. Investors are now focused on the potential for additional deals they believe could offer greater savings. Those include potential deals around development of electric or self-driving vehicles, as well as combining forces in markets including North America, South America, Europe or China.

The two CEOs did not discuss in detail alliances in specific markets including Latin America, where Ford is losing money.

The expanding alliance, which will be governed by a joint committee that includes the CEOs of both companies, highlights the growing pressure on global automakers to manage the costs of developing electric and self-driving vehicles, as well as technology to meet tougher emissions standards for millions of internal combustion vehicles they will sell in coming years.

“You can’t do this alone,” Ford’s chief executive, Jim Hackett, said on the call.

Ford will provide more details on how the alliance affects Ford’s regional operations in coming weeks, but does not expect any job cuts in its plants as a result of the alliance, he said.

Ford will engineer and build medium-sized pickups for both companies, Volkswagen said. Ford officials said the VW pickups will initially be available only in the South American, European and African markets.

Ford will also engineer and build larger commercial vans for European customers, while Volkswagen will develop and build a city van. Vans could be built in Ford’s plant in Turkey, VW said.

The companies estimate the commercial van and pickup cooperation will yield improved annual pretax operating results starting in 2023.

Ford and VW have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop electric and self-driving vehicles, Diess said. Both executives said they were optimistic those deals would be finalized but provided no timeline.

Sources previously said the framework of such a deal would include VW investing in Ford’s autonomous vehicle operations, including its Argo AI business.

VW shares were up 0.7 percent at 145.08 euros in Frankfurt on Tuesday. Ford shares were down 2.7 percent at $8.75 on the New York Stock Exchange in late morning.

“Automakers aren’t just competing with each other anymore, they’re under intense pressure from well-funded tech companies,” said Jessica Caldwell, executive director of industry analysis at Edmunds.

“Cutting costs by sharing vehicle architectures and manufacturing facilities is just table stakes in this new world,” she added.

U.S. AND CHINA SLOWDOWNS

Europe’s biggest automaker and the No. 2 U.S. automaker have been exploring closer cooperation as trade frictions force carmakers to rethink where they build vehicles for Europe, the United States and China. Slowdowns in the world’s largest auto markets - China and the United States - have ratcheted up the pressure to cut costs.

The tie-up with Volkswagen is a big bet for Ford’s Hackett since he took over in May 2017 from the ousted Mark Fields with the mandate to speed up decision-making and cut costs. Some analysts and investors have been frustrated by Ford’s laggard stock price and a perceived lack of details from Hackett about the Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker’s $11 billion restructuring.

The two companies previously shared vehicle development and assembly in South America in a joint venture called Autolatina, which was dissolved in 1995.

Last week, Ford said it would cut thousands of jobs, discontinue building money-losing vehicles and look at closing plants as part of a turnaround effort for its unprofitable European business. Ford’s president of global markets, Jim Farley, said on the conference call that the company will do “whatever it takes” to get Europe back to profitability.

Hackett also reiterated that Ford, which is controlled by the Ford family, remains committed to the dividend, which some investors have speculated could be at risk.

Last month, Volkswagen announced another 3 billion euros ($3.4 billion) of cost cuts as part of its effort to improve profit margins and fund its shift to electric cars and automated driving.

On Monday, Volkswagen said it would invest $800 million to build an electric vehicle plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, prompting U.S. President Donald Trump to congratulate the city and state in a post on Twitter the following day.

But the White House has been pushing to end subsidies on electric vehicles that would help the plant and the alliance.

warned of dire consequences for U.K. factories employing more than 7,000 people if British politicians fail to agree on a plan to avert a no-deal split from the European Union.

While cautioning that it has yet to reach any decision, the U.S. auto giant said a hard Brexit would be “catastrophic” for the U.K. auto industry and its own production facilities in a statement Wednesday.

“We have long urged the U.K. government and parliament to work together to avoid the country leaving the EU on a no-deal-, hard Brexit-basis,” the Dearborn, Michigan-based carmaker said in the release. “We will take whatever action is necessary to preserve the competitiveness of our European business.”

Ford made the comments after Britain’s Times newspaper reported earlier that the manufacturer had used a telephone call with Prime Minister Theresa May to reveal that it had stepped up preparations to move production out of Britain. There’s currently a political impasse around the premier’s plan as she seeks to renegotiate its terms with the EU to win backing from a majority of lawmakers.

Ford employs 13,000 people in Britain, more than half of them at plants in Bridgend, Wales, and Dagenham, near London, which make engines for gasoline- and diesel-engine vehicles respectively.

Office Merger

The company said last month when announcing thousands of job cuts across Europe that it would merge its U.K. head office with a nearby technical center to cut costs, while warning that measures in the event of a no-deal Brexit would be significantly more dramatic.

BMW AG said separately Tuesday that it’s taking Brexit-related decisions “as late as operationally possible” as the clock counts down to the March 29 split without a negotiated settlement in sight. Auto-industry investment in the U.K. dropped 46 percent last year to the lowest since the global financial crisis as other brands with British plants put key decisions on hold.

While carmakers are stockpiling parts to safeguard U.K. output should supply chains be disrupted after a no-deal break, many have also brought forward planned maintenance stops to April to help eke out components at such a critical time. The German company will idle its Oxford Mini plant from April 1.

Jaguar Land Rover, Britain’s biggest carmaker, said last month it would scrap 4,500 posts in response to a sales slowdown blamed on Brexit, as well as a drop in China sales and slumping diesel demand. PSA Group’s Vauxhall Ellesmere Port site is in doubt as it mulls plans for the next Astra.

In the biggest blow to date, Nissan Motor Co. this month reneged on plans to built the X-Trail sport utility vehicle at the U.K.’s largest car plant in Sunderland, northeast England.

— With assistance by Oliver Sachgau

Ford Motor Co. is considering closing two plants in Russia as part of its global plan to restructure operations in unprofitable regions, three industry sources told Reuters.

If the closures go ahead, Ford would probably produce only light commercial vehicles in Russia, two sources said.

After running up fourth-quarter losses in all regions outside North America, Ford is making cuts in Europe, closing down vehicle lines in South America and laying off thousands of workers in China.

In Russia, where Ford has the capacity to produce 360,000 vehicles a year, the U.S. carmaker could close its site in the northern Leningrad region and one of its plants in the central region of Tatarstan, three sources in the industry said.

The sources said no final decision had been made.

The Focus and Mondeo passenger car models produced at the Leningrad region plant, and the EcoSport and Fiesta models produced in Tatarstan would no longer be made in Russia and production of the Kuga and Explorer models may also be discontinued in Russia, sources said.

Ford's business in Russia is operated via a joint venture with Russian automaker Sollers.

A spokeswoman for Ford in Russia said discussions were ongoing about reorganizing the Russian business as part of Ford's new global strategy.

"A final decision will be made in the second quarter of 2019," the spokeswoman said. Currently, "all plants are working as normal," she said, but declined to comment on whether the plants in the Leningrad region and Tatarstan would close.

Two additional sources — a regional government official and a manager at another Russian automobile company — said Ford was considering closing the Tatarstan plant.

Less money, fewer models
Ford is incurring heavy losses from its operations in Russia, two sources familiar with the situation told Reuters.

It sold 53,234 vehicles in Russia last year, up 5.7 percent from 2017 but well behind 13 percent growth in Russia's overall car market, and its share of the Russian market has fallen to 3 percent from 3.8 percent in 2013.

Its key competitors in Russia — Avtovaz, Volkswagen, Kia, Hyundai and Toyota — are seeing their share increase, and their sales outpace the market.

Both Ford and Sollers declined to comment about the financial health of the business.

The Kuga and Explorer models are produced at a different Ford plant, also in Tatarstan.

All five sources said this plant would remain open, but one of the sources said that the plant would continue producing only the Ford Transit model, a light commercial vehicle.

Loan restructuring
Ford was the first international carmaker to launch vehicle assembly in Russia, opening a plant in St Petersburg in 2002. In 2011, it set up a joint venture with Sollers, and the venture took out a 39 billion rouble ($593 million) loan from Russian bank Vnesheconombank, or VEB.

VEB representatives told Reuters that Ford and Sollers were considering different options to restructure their joint business, and restructuring of the loan was also under discussion.

"VEB's relations with Ford Sollers are of a long-term, sustainable nature," the bank said. "There are no violations of any mutual obligations."

Ford and Sollers each hold a 50 percent stake, but Ford has controlled the business since buying up preferred shares.

Sollers now has an "effective" stake of just 0.33 percent, its CEO Vadim Shvetsov was quoted last month as saying by the Interfax news agency. He was also quoted as saying that in his view Ford's business in Russia would have to reorganized.

"It's already clear now that Ford is not competitive in some segments," Interfax quoted Shvetsov as saying last month about Ford's passenger vehicle production in Russia. "The last stress analyses are now being tallied."

A spokeswoman for Sollers declined to say on Tuesday whether closures of the plants in the Leningrad region and Tatarstan were under consideration.

Ford Motor Co. is aiming to cut 5,000 jobs in Germany as it seeks to return to profit in Europe, a spokesman said on Friday.

"We are looking at more than 5,000 positions in Germany, including temporary workers," the spokesman said.

Intanto come immaginavo...

MOSCOW -- Ford Motor's Russian joint venture, Ford Sollers, will close two assembly plants and an engine factory, exiting the country's passenger-car market to focus on light commercial vehicles.

The move is part of a restructuring that will see Sollers assume control of the venture, which is currently led by Ford, the company said in astatement.

Passenger vehicle production to cease by end June 2019, with closure of two vehicle assembly plants – Naberezhnye Chelny and St. Petersburg – and an engine plant in Elabug, Ford said.

The St. Petersburg factory builds the Focus and Mondeo models and Naberezhnye Chelny makes the Fiesta small car and Ecosport crossover.

Ford said the closures would lead to "significant" job losses, without giving details.

"The new Ford Sollers structure supports Ford's global redesign strategy to expand our leadership in commercial vehicles and to grow the business in Europe in those market segments that offer better returns on invested capital," Steven Armstrong, president, Ford of Europe, said in the statement.

Ford was the first international automaker to launch vehicle assembly in Russia, opening a plant in St Petersburg in 2002. In 2011, it set up a joint venture with Sollers in which Ford and Sollers each hold a 50 percent stake, but Ford has controlled the business since buying up preferred shares.

Sales of new cars in Russia are expected to rise 3.6 percent this year, marking a slowdown from last year, according to an estimate from the Association of European Businesses lobby group.

"The Russian passenger vehicle market has been under significant pressure in recent years, with recovery slower than expected and a shift to lower priced passenger vehicle segments," Ford said.

Ford said in January that it was putting its European business including Russia under review in January as part of a broader restructuring of money-losing operations.

The company has the capacity to produce 360,000 vehicles a year in Russia.

ord Motor Co. plans to eliminate about 7,000 salaried jobs -- about 10% of its global white-collar workforce -- as pressures mount on automakers to keep pace with massive technological shifts amid signs global car demand has peaked.

Eliminating the positions will save Ford about $600 million a year, Chief Executive Officer Jim Hackett wrote in a memo to employees Monday, seven months after the company informed employees of a salaried workforce “redesign.” The majority of the cuts will be completed by May 24 in North America, and by the end of August in markets including Europe, China and South America.

“To succeed in our competitive industry, and position Ford to win in a fast-changing future, we must reduce bureaucracy, empower managers, speed decision making, focus on the most valuable work, and cut costs,” Hackett wrote. “Ford is a family company and saying goodbye to colleagues is difficult and emotional.”

Ford shares briefly moved higher before the start of regular trading but were down 0.3% to $10.26 as of 10:15 a.m. Monday in New York trading. The stock has climbed 34% this year after plunging in 2018.

Read More: What Peak Car Will Mean for the Auto Industry Around the World

The dismissals are designed to shrink Ford’s management structure by 20% and streamline the number of organizational layers to nine or less, from 14, Hackett said. The number of jobs cut is far less drastic than the 25,000 that a Morgan Stanley analyst predicted last year.

In the U.S., there will be 800 “involuntary separations,” including 500 this week, according to a Ford spokesman. Some 1,500 U.S. employees have already accepted voluntary buyouts, bringing the total number of salaried job cuts in Ford’s home market to 2,300.

As of April 25, Ford had 196,000 employees worldwide, down from 202,000 at the end of 2017.

Struggle to Cope

The memo provides additional details of a company-wide salaried job reduction that Ford notified employees of in October, and is part of a broader $11 billion restructuring. Other changes focus on product development, such as the creation of a new vehicle architecture and design team and greater investments in infotainment, software development and electrification.

The cuts come as many global automakers are struggling to cope with consumers’ preference for crossovers and SUVs over sedans, slumping sales and the cost of electrifying their lineups to meet stiffer emissions restrictions in markets including China and Europe.

General Motors Co., Volkswagen AG and Tata Motors Ltd.’s Jaguar Land Rover also are eliminating thousands of employees as the rise of electrification and self-driving vehicle technology reshapes the global auto industry.

“Ford is squeezing every cent they can out of the current business by cutting employees, cutting products and getting out of unprofitable businesses so they can put more money into future technology like electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles and mobility services,” said Michelle Krebs, an analyst with car-shopping researcher Autotrader. “The danger is cutting so much that you hurt today’s business and eat your seed corn.

Follow @Brexit, sign up to our Brexit Bulletin, and tell us your Brexit story.

Ford Motor Co. is planning to close a U.K. engine factory as part of an overhaul of its unprofitable European operations in an $11 billion global restructuring.

The Bridgend, South Wales plant, which employs about 1,700 workers, builds engines for several Ford models in Europe, including the Fiesta and B-Max. Its future became uncertain 18 months ago when Jaguar Land Rover said it would end a contract to make motors for its vehicles.

“Changing customer demand and cost disadvantages, plus an absence of additional engine models for Bridgend going forward, make the plant economically unsustainable in the years ahead,” Stuart Rowley, head of Ford Europe, said in an emailed statement on Thursday.

While Ford reiterated its commitment to other U.K. plants such as Dagenham and the remainder of an almost 9,000-strong British workforce, the planned closure of Bridgend by September 2020 was condemned by labor groups.

“Ford broke promise after promise to the U.K.,” Unite Union General Secretary Len McCluskey said by email. “The company has deliberately run down its U.K. operations so that now not a single Ford vehicle -- car or van -- is made in the U.K.”

Brexit Plans

In common with other automakers with a U.K. manufacturing presence, the future of Ford’s remaining operations in the country may depend on how the British government proceeds with a plan to leave the European Union by Oct. 31. The Dearborn, Michigan-based carmaker warned earlier this year that a so-called no-deal exit would have “catastrophic” implications for its operations in the country, where it is the top-selling auto brand.

The Bridgend closure follows the decision by Honda Motor Co. to shutter its Swindon plant in 2021 with the loss of 3,500 jobs. Nissan Motor Co. no longer plans to build the X-Trail sport-utility vehicle in Sunderland, northern England, while Jaguar Land Rover is cutting 4,500 positions worldwide, many of them in the U.K.

Ford is also closing factories in Germany, France and Russia as part of a deep retrenchment in Europe to weed out slow-selling models. The company wants to focus mainly on its commercial van and pickup truck businesses on the continent, where Ford made a pretax loss of $398 million last year.

COLOGNE, Germany, June 27, 2019 – Ford is launching a new business model and fresh vehicle line-up as part of the most comprehensive redesign in the history of its business in Europe. The company also is on track to significantly improve its financial results in Europe this year, paving the way to sustainable profitability and its longer-term goal of delivering a 6% EBIT margin.

“Ford will be a more targeted business in Europe, consistent with the company’s global redesign, generating higher returns through our focus on customer needs and a lean structure,” said Stuart Rowley, president, Ford of Europe. “Implementing our new strategy quickly enables us to invest and grow our leading commercial vehicle business and provide customers with more electrified vehicles, SUVs, exciting performance derivatives and iconic imported models.”

The new European operating model and resulting organization are effective July 1. Three new business groups – Commercial Vehicles (CVs), Passenger Vehicles (PVs) and Imports – are established to facilitate fast decision-making centred on customer needs. Each has a dedicated management organisation including leaders responsible for marketing, manufacturing and product development.

The Commercial Vehicles group will be led by general manager Hans Schep and based at the company’s CV centre of excellence in Dunton, U.K., which is being strengthened through facility improvements and investments to enhance technical skills.

Ford intends to grow its leadership as the top-selling CV brand in Europe, including leading the pickup segment, and to double its CV profitability in Europe in the next five years. This growth will be supported by its strategic alliance with Volkswagen, its Ford Otosan joint venture in Turkey and a restructured Ford Sollers joint venture in Russia.

The Passenger Vehicles group, under general manager Roelant de Waard based in Cologne, Germany, will lead a future portfolio of European-built cars and SUVs.

Cross-functional project teams are dedicated to running each vehicle nameplate, empowered to adjust design and manufacturing to focus on customer needs. European passenger vehicle development, including battery electric vehicles, will be centred in Cologne-Merkenich.

The Imports group will comprise a niche portfolio of iconic passenger vehicles including Mustang, Explorer and an all-new Mustang-inspired fully electric performance utility coming in late 2020. Ford expects to more than triple passenger vehicle imports into Europe annually by 2024.

Three new vehicle nameplates

Ford is freshening and expanding its vehicle line-up in Europe, introducing at least three new nameplates in the next five years as it continues to grow its utility vehicle portfolio, including the all-new Mustang-inspired fully electric performance utility. The new nameplates are in addition to all-new Kuga, Puma and Explorer Plug-In Hybrid coming by early 2020.

Fuel economy improvements and CO2 reductions are being realised through improvements in conventional powertrains, country-specific vehicle portfolio management and a broad range of new hybrid and full electric propulsion choices.

Every new Ford passenger vehicle nameplate will include an electrified option, delivering one of the most comprehensive line-ups of electrified options for European customers. A future family of battery electric vehicles will be assembled in Europe.

“Our future is rooted in electrification,” added Rowley. “We are electrifying across our portfolio, providing all of our customers with more accessible vehicle options that are fun to drive, have improved fuel economy and are better for our environment.”

Broad-based efficiency improvement actions

The foundation of Ford’s new operating model in Europe is a broad-based efficiency improvement program designed to support the new business groups.

Manufacturing efficiency is being improved through the previously announced proposed or confirmed closure or sale of six assembly and component manufacturing plants by the end of next year:

· Proposed closure of Bridgend Engine Plant in South Wales

· Closure of Ford Aquitaine Industries Transmission Plant in France

· Closure of Naberezhnye Chelny Assembly, St. Petersburg Assembly and Elabuga Engine Plant in Russia

· Sale of the Kechnec Transmission Plant in Slovakia to Magna

As a result, Ford’s manufacturing footprint in Europe will be reduced to a proposed 18 facilities by the end of 2020, from 24 at the beginning of 2019. In the U.K., the Ford of Britain and Ford Credit Europe headquarters in Warley also will close later this year and operations consolidated in Dunton.

In addition, Ford is implementing shift reductions at its assembly plants in Saarlouis, Germany, and Valencia, Spain, as well as a more streamlined management structure and marketing and sales operations.

In total, approximately 12,000 jobs will be impacted at Ford’s wholly owned facilities and consolidated joint ventures in Europe by the end of 2020, primarily through voluntary separation programs. Around 2,000 of those are salaried positions, which are included among the 7,000 salaried positions Ford is reducing globally.

“Separating employees and closing plants are the hardest decisions we make, and in recognition of the effect on families and communities, we are providing support to ease the impact,” said Rowley. “We are grateful for the ongoing consultations with our works councils, trade union partners and elected representatives. Together, we are moving forward and focused on building a long-term sustainable future for our business in Europe.”

Ford Motor is developing a family of electric vehicles aimed at European markets.

The automaker is working on the vehicles at its European development center in Cologne, Germany, Ford of Europe President Stuart Rowley told journalists on a conference call Thursday, June 27.

No timing for any launch was given, but a source close to the automaker said the vehicles would arrive "in the next couple of years."

Rowley would not comment on size or body styles.

Next year Ford will begin European sales of an upscale electric SUV said to be inspired by the Mustang sports car and potentially called Mach E. The vehicle will imported from the U.S.

The new EVs will be built in an unidentified plant in Europe. Ford would not comment on whether the new family of EVs would use VW’s MEB electric platform as part of a collaboration between the two companies, whose relationship includes working together on commercial vehicles.

VW has said it’s keen to widen the customer base for MEB outside its own brands as it seeks to spread the high cost of electrification by improving the economies of scale.

In January, Ford CEO Jim Hackett said EVs could be a fruitful area of collaboration between the two companies.

“Both the EV and AV [autonomous vehicles] are big costs for investment,” Hackett told investors during a conference call. “Both are really important to both companies’ future. That is part of the incentive to find ways to cooperate.”

At first, Ford was slow to offer electrification in Europe, after slow sales of an all-electric version of the previous Focus. But the company recently announced plans to offer three plug-in hybrids in Europe. PHEV versions of the new Kuga compact crossover, Explorer large crossover and Transit Custom van are expected to be on the market by early next year, while a full-electric version of the Transit will be launched in 2021, Ford has said.

Automakers are being forced to ramp up electrification plans in response to tough new European legislation beginning in 2020 that sets average carbon dioxide targets of 95 g/km, down from an average of 120.5 g/km last year.

However, automakers fear that the push from legislation won’t be matched by customer demand for EVs, which are more expensive than vehicles with an internal-combustion engine.

“Electrification is going to grow over the years, but it’s not going to grow to the extent all the experts are telling you," Ford’s former CEO, Mark Fields, told a mobility conference in Israel in June.

Fields said that would be a problem for automakers already struggling to create sustainable profits. “They are going to have to first restructure the margins of the business,” he said. “And on top of it, you’re going to have to incentivize demand.

“If you throw in, during that time period, a recession that’s going to happen at some point, that’s going to put a lot of pressure on the OEMs.”

Ford of Europe plans to cut 12,000 jobs, or around 20 percent of its workforce on the continent, by 2020 as it seeks to improve margins and cut losses. It will close or sell six plants by the end of next year, including the Bridgend engine plant in south Wales, a transmission plant in France, a transmission joint venture with Magna International in Slovakia and two assembly sites and an engine plant in Russia.

Ford also announced last week that it would introduce two more SUV nameplates in Europe within the next five years. The vehicles are expected to be built in Europe, rather than imported, the source close to the automaker said.

The soon-to-expand alliance between Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen AG has the potential to transform the global auto industry and increase pressure on other manufacturers developing electric and self-driving cars, analysts said.

By potentially licensing its electric-vehicle platform to Ford, VW could guarantee some profit from electric vehicles next year and gain “an unassailable scale advantage in the market,” said Angus Tweedie, a Citigroup analyst. In return, Credit Suisse analysts said VW may provide “crucial public validation” for Ford’s autonomous-vehicle business, including partner Argo AI.

Ford and VW have scheduled a press conference for 8 a.m. Friday in New York to update investors on the alliance they first formalized in January. The two are expected to extend existing cooperation on commercial vehicles and mid-size trucks to also include joint work on self-driving and electric-car technology, people familiar with the talks have said.

Representatives for Ford and VW declined to comment ahead of Friday’s press conference with chief executive officers Jim Hackett and Herbert Diess. Ford shares were up 0.4% to $10.15 as of 1:25 p.m. Thursday in New York.

Ford may leverage its access to VW’s electric-car architecture to comply with stricter European emissions rules, Citi’s Tweedie said. The U.S. automaker may make “cost-plus” payments to VW on the order of 400 million euros ($450 million) in 2020 alone, he estimated.

Credit Suisse said an an expanded alliance between the two companies could combine VW’s strength in EVs with Ford’s in autonomous vehicles, allowing both to “address these challenges in a more capital-efficient manner.” Broader cooperation will force other mass-market carmakers to “seek more synergies” to remain competitive, analysts led by Daniel Schwarz wrote in a report.

“A VW investment in Ford’s AV business would provide a crucial public validation data point (similar to SoftBank’s investment in GM Cruise), and could be just the start of external capital for Ford’s AV business,” Schwarz said. VW and Ford are the Credit Suisse analysts’ top auto stock picks in Europe and the U.S.

Chissà come risponderanno Daimler e BMW.

ETROIT --  Ford Motor Co.’s Joe Hinrichs, 53, will retire as president of automotive, and Jim Farley, 57, president of new business technology and strategy, will become COO, Ford said.

The changes are effective March 1. Farley will report to CEO Jim Hackett.

Ford said the changes are meant to "accelerate its transformation into a higher-growth, higher-margin business."

On Wall Street, Ford shares fell 2.5 percent in early trading to $8.04.

Hinrichs had been at Ford for 19 years while Farley joined the company in 2007.

"Jim Farley is the right person to take on this important new role," Hackett said in a statement. "Jim's passion for great vehicles and his intense drive for results are well known. He also has developed into a transformational leader with the imagination and foresight to help lead Ford into the future."

Farley is expected to retain his role as head of Ford Smart Mobility, the company's  autonomous vehicle unit, and its partnership with Argo AI, a Pittsburgh-based autonomous technology firm.

Hinrichs was well-respected in Ford’s factories and recently helped the automaker come to terms on a new four-year contract with the UAW.

“I thank Joe for his tremendous leadership over the past two decades,” Hackett said. “Joe was instrumental to Ford’s ability to survive the Great Recession a decade ago without bankruptcy or taxpayer bailout, and successfully headed Ford’s operations in Asia Pacific and North America. Most recently, Joe oversaw our global portfolio of iconic vehicles, helped forge a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship with the UAW and was regularly sought out as an authority and promoter of smart global trade.”

In addition, Hau Thai-Tang, Ford’s chief product development and purchasing officer, will take on an expanded role and will report to Farley, Ford said. He will add responsibility for the company’s Enterprise Product Line Management and connectivity arms.

“Hau will be the primary architect as we bring together the vehicle architecture and software stack to create products, services and experiences our customers will love,” Hackett said. “ We are moving forward with an integrated approach to vehicles and connected services, all anchored in an obsession for the customer, great design and a commitment to strong returns.”

A press conference is set for later this morning. The Wall Street Journal reported the move earlier
