VW’s U.S. CEO Has Seen the Future and it’s All About SUVs and BEVs
Regaining the “cool” factor with a radically revamped line-up.
by Paul A. Eisenstein | Oct 14, 2019

VW Group of America CEO Scott Keogh introduces the new Atlas Cross Sport, one of at least three new SUVs in the automaker’s pipeline.
Few brands had the “cool” factor of Volkswagen back in the 1960s, when products like the Beetle and the Microbus won over millions of American buyers, young and old.
The German automaker is hoping to rebuild its hip brand identity – while moving past the “god-awful stupid mistake” it made by rigging its diesel engines – with an array of new SUVs and BEVs set to roll out during the next several years, Volkswagen Group of America CEO Scott Keogh told TheDetroitBureau.com.
While it’s far too early to tell how battery-electric vehicles like the ID Buzz microvan will fare in the market, there are signs that VW is regaining some of its luster. The automaker has defied the overall downturn in the U.S. market this year largely due to its expanding line-up of utility vehicles.
(First Look: 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport)
Just three years ago, the older Touareg and Tiguan models accounted for a mere 14% of Volkswagen brand sales in the States. This year, the SUV share surged to 52%, Keogh said during a discussion at the Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee. And that’s likely not a high point, he added, following the debut of the automaker’s latest utility vehicle, a two-row version of the big Atlas dubbed the Sport Cross.
“This is a massive swing,” said Keogh, as the first of the new models rolled off the Chattanooga assembly line.

The production version of the VW ID Buzz is “on track” for a 2022 launch, according to Keogh.
The Cross Sport is just one of an assortment of upcoming Volkswagen utility vehicles, Keogh said during the subsequent conversation. He confirmed at least two more will follow, including a base model notably smaller than the current Tiguan, suggesting there is “a massive opportunity for SUVs in the A-segment.”
Yet another SUV, sized somewhere between that entry model and the Tiguan is also in the works.
VW unveiled the production version of its first long-range battery-electric, dubbed the ID.3, at the Frankfurt Motor Show a month ago. That hatchback won’t come to the U.S., but a crossover using the same, new all-electric platform will become the first BEV to charge into American showrooms.
“We will be showing that off sometime in February (2020) and it will be retailed starting at the very end of the 2020 model-year,” Keogh said, adding that it will get some variation of the “ID” nameplate that future all-electric Volkswagen products will get in Europe and other global markets.
Initially, the electric utility vehicle will be produced abroad but “then we will manufacture it here … sometime in calendar-year 2022,” said Keogh, noting that it will be the first of at least two all-electric products to be assembled at the Chattanooga plant once an $800 million expansion is completed.

The ID.3 is the first production model off VW’s new MEB all-electric architecture, but it won’t come to the U.S.
The automaker has not said much about the other product except to note that it will share the same underlying modular architecture as the ID.3 and ID crossover. Dubbed the MEB, it will underpin the majority of the future battery-electric vehicles coming from the various Volkswagen Group brands in the years ahead.
(De Nysschen Returns! Named Volkswagen’s North American COO)
That includes the production version of the ID Buzz, a wildly popular concept vehicle meant to bring back the old Volkswagen Microbus in modern form.
There have been some concerns that the project was running behind schedule but, “That car is on track,” Keogh said. “It will launch in Europe in 2022, but we’ll have to do some localization before it comes here.”
Volkswagen faces a number of challenges, among them a perception that its products are more costly than those from U.S. and Asian rivals. But Keogh said he believes that VW’s all-in commitment to electric vehicles – an investment running over $12 billion – will ensure the economies of scale that actually will help it undercut its competition.
“Let’s not use the word, cheap,” he said, when asked how low its electric models will go. The better word for the electric crossover, he added, will be “Affordable. Right now, $33,000 or somewhere around there. I think that’s the center of the market.”

Porsche’s Taycan is one of numerous electric vehicles that will be marketed through other VW brands, a total of about 50 BEVs due by 2025.
There are other challenges that VW has to face down, Keogh added. Among other things, that includes the “god-awful stupid mistake” of cheating on diesel emissions standards. The scandal may have broken four years ago but. Keogh acknowledged, “There are customers who were wronged who are not going to forget it too quickly.”
The best VW can do, he stressed, is to show it is a better company, one making better products. And he is hoping that the marque’s SUVs will be a case in point. While Keogh said it remained a matter of debate how big the battery-car market will be, “I think this is a new opportunity Volkswagen can take advantage of because it’s the one time where we can leverage our global scale to get some competitive pricing,” while also delivering a mix of style, performance and other characteristics that will harken back to the “magic moment back in the ‘60s.”
(Volkswagen Gets a New Look — and a New Sound)
With products like the Beetle and the Microbus, he said, “we provided transportation for the millions (in the U.S.). We had a heck of a cool car that caught the zeitgeist of America. I think we have that opportunity with our electric models to be the brand that introduces a cool car at a cool price.”

1) Atlas Cross sport
4) suv elettrico ID4X
5) versione coupè della ID4X
6) suv elettrico sui 5 metri
7) Microbus elettrico.

Tesla Inc Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said on Tuesday the electric-car maker will build its first European factory as well as an engineering and design center in Berlin.

By building a plant in Germany, Tesla will be able to add the “Made in Germany” accolade. Berlin also has earmarked financial support for manufacturing electric car battery cells.

Musk, in a tweet, said that Tesla will build batteries, powertrains and vehicles, starting with Model Y lower-priced sports utility vehicle at the Berlin factory.

Last month, Tesla said it expected its European factory to start production in 2021. The carmaker is also gearing up to open its factory in Shanghai.

Musk made the announcement about the Berlin plant at the Golden Steering Wheel awards ceremony in Germany. He said the factory will be near the new Berlin airport. Musk had said in June last year that Germany is the frontrunner for its first factory in Europe.

“Tesla is coming to Brandenburg with a big investment,” Dietmar Woidke, state premier of Brandenburg, which surrounds Berlin, said in a statement. “We lobbied for this for a long time in intensive talks and with good arguments.”

The company is yet to prove it can be consistently profitable. Tesla has said it expects to be cash flow positive, but faces big investments with the launch of new factories and development of products including a pickup truck and a semi-truck.

Musk’s appearance at the awards ceremony is another example of Tesla’s efforts to co-opt marketing tactics employed by German manufacturers, which have a reputation for quality.

Tesla, for instance, has tested its cars on the Nordschleife, the notorious northern loop of the Nuerburgring racing track, as a way to burnish the brand’s reputation for reliability and sporting prowess.

The company has an engineering firm in Pruem, Germany, that specializes in automated manufacturing systems for battery-making plants.

In October, Reuters reported that Tesla is aiming to start production for its factory in China amid uncertainties around orders, labor and suppliers.

I nuovi target.

Weitere Wechsel in Ingolstadt

Bugatti Automobiles is looking to broaden its appeal by flanking the 2.5 million-euro ($2.7 million) Chiron supercar with a slightly more accessible alternative.

The potential second model line would be an electric-powered grand tourer or crossover that could seat up to four people and would cost between 500,000 and 1 million euros.

The French boutique automaker is in discussions with parent Volkswagen Group about the investment, Bugatti CEO Stephan Winkelmann said in an interview at Bloomberg's office in Berlin.

"The industry is changing fundamentally, and we have to address what opportunities there are to develop Bugatti as a brand going forward," Winkelmann said.

Securing funding for such a niche project is a "hard fight," he said.

The plan shows how even automakers decoupled from the day-to-day realities of transport are grappling with the gradual end of the combustion-engine era. For Bugatti, it's less about emissions and more about the changing definition of progress and innovation.

Winkelmann, who previously ran VW Group's Lamborghini brand, is trying to make Bugatti viable enough to potentially survive outside the German auto group and head off the risk of being phased out once again.

Since the 2015 diesel-cheating scandal, VW Group has been taking a closer look at its portfolio amid the growing burden of investing in electric cars and self-driving technology.

Bugatti has long been viewed as prime example of VW Group's engineering extravagance. It was revived under former Chairman Ferdinand Piech in 1998 after the brand had largely faded from existence in the 1950s.

Volkswagen rebuilt the Molsheim-based marque around a hulking 16-cylinder engine, rolling out the Chiron's predecessor in 2005 after a series of development issues.

The elite nameplate offers limited opportunities for sharing parts and technology. Because of high development costs and low volumes, the Veyron -- Bugatti’s first model under VW control -- was considered one of the biggest money losers in the auto industry.

Winkelmann said that Bugatti is "earning decent money" these days and that the brand now needs to justify itself with a business case, rather than just engineering feats.

After setting a speed record earlier this year when a Chiron derivative drove faster than 300 mph (483 kph), Winkelmann said Bugatti is done pursuing such performance milestones and is looking to increase its cache as a luxury brand.

Bugatti limited the production run of the Chiron to just 500 vehicles, and fewer than 100 are still up for grabs. It currently crafts some 100 highly customized cars per year including the $8.8 million the Centodieci, which is based on the Chiron.

The addition of a cheaper model would be a massive expansion, with output surging by more than 600 vehicles annually, said Winkelmann, who was a key driver behind Lamborghini’s decision to add the Urus SUV.

Ferrari, which has more than tripled in value since its public listing, has become a poster child for the potential of an independent elite car brand and raised interest in potential spinoffs by VW Group. But the recent struggles of Aston Martin highlight the challenges in replicating the strategy.

VW Group CEO Herbert Diess is pushing the group's high-end brands to generate better returns and mapped out a plan last year to pool Bugatti in a so-called super-premium group that includes Bentley and Lamborghini. Porsche would lead the division.

Winkelmann said that combination of brands "would be unique in the auto industry."

Three new members, Dr. Arno Antlitz, Dirk Große-Loheide and Dr. Sabine Maaßen, will join the Board of Management of AUDI AG in 2020. Dr. Arno Antlitz will become the new Chief Financial Officer of AUDI AG on March 1, hereby exchanging his area of responsibility with the current Audi CFO Alexander Seitz, who will become CFO at Volkswagen Cars. Dirk Große-Loheide will be the new Audi Board of Management Member for Procurement and IT as of April 1; he succeeds Dr. Bernd Martens. The new team is to be completed with Dr. Sabine Maaßen, currently CHRO of Thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG, who will take over Board of Management responsibility for Human Resources at AUDI AG from Wendelin Göbel on April 1.
The Chairman of the Supervisory Board of AUDI AG, Dr. Herbert Diess, stated on the changes in the Board of Management: “Audi is realigning itself for the future. To this end, the first key measures have been initiated by the Audi Board of Management under Bram Schot. It is now important for the new CEO, Markus Duesmann, and his future team to make Vorsprung durch Technik an unmistakable maxim for action at Audi. This must be the mission of the Audi management. I thank Bram Schot and his colleagues for their good work.”

Peter Mosch, Chairman of the General Works Council and Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of AUDI AG: “Following the decision to appoint Markus Duesmann as the new Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi, further decisions have been made today for the future of the company's leadership. We welcome the new Board of Management members Dirk Große-Loheide and Dr. Arno Antlitz, as well as Dr. Sabine Maaßen, who will be of particular importance to the workforce in her function as Board of Management Member for Human Resources and Labor Relations Director. We look forward to positive and successful cooperation in the interests of the employees and the company, and we would like to thank the departing members of the Board of Management.”

Dirk Große-Loheide (55) is responsible for procurement at the Volkswagen brand. A graduate in economics, he has worked at the Volkswagen Group for the past 28 years. He has exceptional knowledge of the industry and great procurement experience. Große-Loheide will take over Board of Management responsibility for Procurement and IT on April 1 from Dr. Bernd Martens (53), who introduced the mandatory sustainability rating for suppliers at Audi, the first car brand to do so. In this way, the premium brand makes sure that environmental, social and governance criteria are applied also in the upstream value chain. This sustainability rating is to become an industry standard.

Dr. Arno Antlitz (49) has played a major role at Volkswagen Cars in the development and implementation of the future pact and the turnaround plans in the regions. This has created the financial strength required for the Volkswagen brand to systematically initiate its electric strategy. After two and a half years in Ingolstadt, Alexander Seitz (57), the current Member of the Board of Management of AUDI AG for Finance, China and Legal Affairs, will take over the position of his successor Dr. Antlitz in Wolfsburg on March 1, 2020. With the Audi Transformation Plan (ATP), he has created the right conditions and financial basis to strategically realign the company and secure its future. The ATP has a volume of 15 billion euros and is designed to improve earnings on a sustainable basis.

Dr. Sabine Maaßen (53) has been at Thyssenkrupp since 2016 and has been Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) there with responsibility for the Steel Europe business area since 2018. Previously, the doctor of law and trade unionist of many years’ standing was legal counsel on the board of the IG Metall trade union. As an employee representative, she has already held several supervisory board positions in the automotive industry, in which she has developed a deep understanding of the sector. Dr. Maaßen will take over Board of Management responsibility for Human Resources from Wendelin Göbel (56) on April 1. Göbel joined Audi in 1987 and has worked for the Volkswagen Group in various positions for more than three decades, since 2017 as Member of the Board of Management for Human Resources and Organization. In the past two and a half years, Göbel has made the human resources division of the Four Rings fit for the future and has initiated decisive steps for the transformation of the company.

Volkswagen making good headway with transformation
€19 billion for future technologies through 2024, of which €11 billion for e-mobility
Model and electric offensive in 2020: 34 new models in total
Newly-established Car.Software organization starts operating on January 1, 2020
“Transform2025+” strategy gaining foothold
Financial metrics improve in 2019 as world market shrinks
The Volkswagen brand will be launching 34 new models worldwide next year, including twelve SUVs and eight electric or hybrid vehicles. Volkswagen COO Ralf Brandstätter commented: “We are at the beginning of a new era. We mean business with e-mobility. The brand will be investing €19 billion in future technologies through 2024, €11 billion alone in the further development of e-mobility. And Volkswagen starts the biggest electric offensive in the automotive industry next year: The ID.31 goes on sale in the summer, soon followed by the ID.Next2, our first electric SUV. Our ID. family makes emission-free mobility accessible to many people for the first time. That is New Volkswagen.”

The brand continues to stand by its commitment to the Paris climate goals. Vehicles and the company are to achieve a carbon-neutral balance by 2050. CO2 emissions from production are to be halved by 2025. Volkswagen is well on track in this respect thanks to its electric offensive.

The digital transformation roadmap is an important stepping stone for the company in its modernization and digitalization efforts. Signed off in 2019, the roadmap follows on from the pact for the future and focuses in particular on further improvements in competitiveness and earnings power over the coming years. It also lays the groundwork for expanding the software expertise of the brand and the Group. The Car.Software organization will already begin operating as an independent business unit in January 2020. By 2025, the in-house share of car software development and vehicle-related services is to rise from under ten percent today to at least 60 percent.

2019 sees the Volkswagen brand in the homestretch. COO Brandstätter underscored the strong team performance: “In a shrinking overall market the Volkswagen brand has won market shares worldwide and significantly improved its operating result. Ongoing restructuring of core business, including the positive effects of the pact for the future, and the success of the worldwide SUV offensive have been key to this achievement. Improved earnings in the regions and successful WLTP management have been just as important.” The pact for the future signed in 2016 is also bringing results. Some €2.6 billion of the planned €3 billion cost savings will have already been achieved by the end of 2019.

CFO Arno Antlitz said: “Our strategy is gaining a foothold. Our vehicles are convincing customers and our consistent discipline with respect to costs and investments is having a positive impact. We therefore confirm our target of an operating return on sales of four to five percent for the full year 2019 in a difficult market environment. As announced, we expect to generate cash flow from operating activities significantly in excess of one billion euros in 2019. Our financial targets for 2020 remain unchanged. Furthermore, we reaffirm our targets for 2022 of an operating return on sales of at least six percent and cash flow in excess of 2 billion euros.”

Production has also become more efficient in 2019, with the brand exceeding its annual productivity improvement target of five percent. The improvement by the end of the year is expected to be more than seven percent.
Last, but not least, 2019 was a successful year for vehicle premieres: In particular the Golf 8 and ID.3 as well as the T-Cross, Teramont3, T-Roc R4, and T-Roc Cabrio5 were extremely well received by customers.

ID3
ID4
Arteon shooting brake
Atlas Cross sport
Molti suv solo per la Cina (almeno 4)
Golf GTI
B-suv coupè detto anche Nivus
Suv compatto e pseudo Polo 4 porte per l’India

Volkswagen brand will look at axing at least one of its minivans to reduce costs as customer demand shifts away from people carriers to crossovers and SUVs.

The brand has already dropped the New Beetle, Scirocco coupe, Phaeton sedan and the Eos cabriolet. These were niche vehicles, while VW's minivans still sell relatively well.

"We need to see whether we still need to have three minivans in our range with the Golf SportsVan, Touran and Sharan," VW brand finance chief Arno Antlitz told Automotive News Europe at a press event here.

The Touran compact minivan is the best-selling model of the three vehicles. Touran sales in Europe fell 14 percent to 69,814 in the first 11 months, according to JATO Dynamics market researchers. Sales of the Golf SportsVan, which is positioned between the Golf hatchback and Touran, dropped 26 percent to 40,215. Sales of the Sharan large minivan were up 1.7 percent to 20,854.

VW brand's T-Roc and Tiguan compact SUVs have much higher sales volumes. European sales of the Tiguan rose 2.2 percent to 245,056 through November and T-Roc sales increased 46 percent to 193,963.

VW is scrutinizing its model, engines and transmission lineups as it seeks to reduce costs to deliver a profit margin of 6 percent or more by 2022, up from an expected 4 percent to 5 percent next year.

Antlitz said VW had reduced costs significantly by eliminating about 30 percent of engine-gearbox combinations. "In the past someone from sales would invariably say that there was some important customer group that needed a particular combination," he said.

The switch to WLTP type approval rules in Europe, which caused supply bottlenecks because automakers had to certify their cars under the new regime, was beneficial because it led to reduced engineering complexity, Antlitz said.

"Although it cost us about 500,000 euros, the changeover did have a positive effect. We didn’t have the luxury anymore to maintain this number of combinations, so cuts were easier to implement," he said.

VW has expanded its SUV lineup in recent years with the T-Roc and T-Cross as it seeks to increase sales of higher-margin SUVs to help fund an industry-wide shift toward low-emission vehicles.

The brand has increased its share of SUVs sold to 37 percent in Europe and 42 percent in the U.S., Chief Operating Officer Ralf Brandstaetter said at the same event.
