Nissan's new CEO, Makoto Uchida, outlined a plan of attack for rebuilding the troubled automaker by reviving its U.S. business, cracking down on costs and increasing revenue through fresh product and next-generation technologies.

As for relations with estranged partner Renault, Uchida said he would focus on short-term gains that benefit all members of the Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi alliance while protecting Nissan’s autonomy. He said he is not focused on changing the companies’ cross-shareholdings for now.

"Nissan has enjoyed growth over the years thanks to the alliance," Uchida said at a press briefing on Monday in his first comments as CEO. "I intend to continue our alliance efforts while maintaining Nissan’s independence."

Uchida’s comments were delivered at Nissan’s global headquarters and came day after he took office.

Uchida takes the helm at at a critical turning point as Nissan battles slumping profits, an aging product portfolio and soured relations with 20-year French partner Renault.

Uchida is part of a younger generation of new leaders tapped to tackle those challenges and revive Japan’s No. 2 automaker from the scandal that enveloped it following last year’s stunning arrest of former Chairman Carlos Ghosn on financial misconduct allegations.

Uchida said Nissan must still reform parts of its corporate culture and blamed much of sales and profit trouble on the unrealistic goals set by Ghosn during his time at the helm.

“By trying to hit over-ambitious goals, we caused a rapid decline in our performance,” Uchida said. “We have to set objectives that are challenging but achievable and understandable.”

Joining the 53-year-old Uchida on Nissan’s new leadership team is just-appointed COO Ashwani Gupta, 49, a former executive with experience at Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi Motors. Backing them is Vice COO Jun Seki, 58, in charge of performance recovery and product planning.

Uchida replaced interim president Yasuhiro Yamauchi, who was selected in September to preside during the search for a successor to former CEO Hiroto Saikawa, who resigned that month.

Nissan’s board says Uchida’s top priority is to resuscitate profits.

He inherits a midterm revival plan from Saikawa.

That roadmap that involves cutting 12,500 jobs worldwide, consolidating the lineup and cutting global production capacity to 6.6 million vehicles a year from 7.2 million. Saikawa’s plan also calls for rebuilding U.S. sales to 1.4 million vehicles in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2023.

It targets parent company operating profit margin of 6 percent that year.

Uchida said he would reexamine that plan with Gupta and Seki after they settle into their roles.

Uchida said the U.S. recovery is making progress, without giving details.

Uchida aims to control costs by streamlining investments and front-line operations. He plans to increase revenue by introducing new technologies and vehicles, such as a next-generation, full-electric crossover.

“The most important pillar of the business transformation is growth through new products, new technologies,” he said. “I want our employees to feel proud that they work for Nissan.”

Nissan’s operating profit fell 70 percent in the July-September quarter, following a 99 percent plunge in the April-June period. For the current fiscal year ending March 31, the company expects operating profit and net income to both fall by more than half.

Operating profit margin is forecast to dwindle to 1.4 percent compared with the 2.7 percent to recorded in the previous fiscal year ended March 31.

Another priority for Nissan and the alliance is streamlining r&d and product development.

Japanese media reported on Dec. 1 that Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi are in talks to set up joint venture dedicated to next-generation technologies, including electrified drivetrains and artificial intelligence. Executives from the companies discussed the idea last week in France.

At the same meeting, the companies decided to create a new position of general secretary for the Alliance Operating Board. That person will report to the alliance board and the companies’ CEOs and be in charge of coordinating major alliance projects.

“The board members all agreed on programs to significantly enhance and accelerate the operational efficiency of the alliance for the benefit of the three companies, including action plans to maximize the contribution of the Alliance to support each company’s strategic plan and operating profit,” the companies said in a statement.

The secretary general will be named in the coming days, they said.

French media reported that French-Lebanese engineer Hadi Zablit has been picked for the post, French media reported. Zablit, 49, is currently the alliance's business development chief responsible for the development of Common Module Family A-segment platform, new technologies partnerships, mobility services and product planning synchronization.

Renault, which has a 43.4 percent stake in Nissan after it saved the Japanese automaker from financial ruin two decades ago, has for years been pursuing closer ties with its bigger partner, only to be rebuffed by Nissan.

TOKYO -- Veteran Renault engineer Hadi Zablit was named general secretary of the automaker's alliance with Nissan to accelerate business efficiencies across the companies.

Zablit, 49, is now a senior vice president of business development at the alliance.

He takes up the new position on Monday and will focus on maximizing the contribution of the alliance's scale to the profits of each company, the automakers said in a statement.

The announcement comes as Nissan and Renault try to mend ties amid falling profits a year after the arrest of former boss Carlos Ghosn. Nissan brought in a new executive team this week, while Renault is set to choose a new CEO in the coming weeks.

Renault has held a 43 percent stake in Nissan since the French automaker rescued Nissan from a financial crisis two decades ago. Their partnership has focused on using their combined scale to lower costs for research and development, procurement and production.

Both automakers and their junior partner Mitsubishi were shaken by the arrest of former chairman Ghosn last November on allegations of financial misconduct, which he denies.

This year, Renault tried to forge deeper ties with Nissan, only to be rebuffed by the Japanese automaker.

This week, Nissan's new CEO, Makoto Uchida, told reporters that the alliance had "to benefit each of its partners in terms of revenue and profit."

Uchida said closer capital ties with Renault were not a focus in the short term.

In a statement, the alliance said that it would announce further details of its efficiency plans in coming weeks.

Renault-Nissan says Zablit will focus on maximizing the contribution of the alliance's scale to the profits of each company.
Zablit, a French-Lebanese engineer, started his career at Renault in 1994 as a production process engineer in the powertrain division. He left in 2000 to work for Boston Consulting Group where he was the lead in the automotive sector for Europe, and co-lead for worldwide innovation practice.

Zablit returned to Renault in 2017. In his current role at Renault he is responsible for the development of the Common Module Family A-segment platform, automaker and new technology partnerships, mobility services, product planning synchronization and alliance investments.

Renault's board wants Luca de Meo, who heads Volkswagen Group's Seat brand, to become the automaker's next CEO, French reports said.

De Meo won out over Patrick Koller, CEO of the supplier Faurecia, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP) and Les Echos.

The board chose de Meo as their preferred candidate at its meeting on Tuesday, the reports said.

De Meo, 52, won the support of the French government, Renault's biggest shareholder with a 15 percent stake, AFP said.

However, a stumbling block to de Meo's appointment could be a non-compete clause he has with VW Group, Les Echos said.

De Meo, an Italian executive, emerged as favorite for the Renault CEO post because of his success in making the Spanish brand profitable. He also speaks French and started his career at Renault before working for Toyota and Fiat.

Renault's interim CEO, Clotilde Delbos, the automaker's finance boss, was not considered for the CEO job because she is relatively new to the industry and has only a financial background, reports said.

Renault has been searching for a new CEO since its board ousted Thierry Bollore in mid-October, as the French automaker and its alliance partner, Nissan, cleared out managers closely associated with the Carlos Ghosn era.

Nissan will stop offering diesels in its next Qashqai compact SUV, a source close to automaker said, as it puts electrification at the forefront of its European strategy.

Along with gasoline-powered variants, Nissan will offer the third-generation Qashqai, which is due to be revealed next September, with the automaker’s e-Power system. The serial hybrid drivetrain, which is popular in Japan, lets a car function like an electric vehicle because its combustion engine is only used to charge the battery.

The Qashqai may also offer a plug-in hybrid option using a system from Renault-Nissan alliance partner Mitsubishi, media reports have said.

Nissan’s move away from diesels comes as European demand for the powertrain has declined to roughly 30 percent now from 45 percent in 2017, according to figures from industry association ACEA. Nissan's share is also about 30 percent now, down from 47 percent two years ago, according to JATO Dynamics.

“We have seen a significant drop in diesel,” Nissan Europe Chairman Gianluca de Ficchy told Automotive News Europe. “We are adapting ourselves to follow that trend.”

De Ficchy wants more than 40 percent of Nissan’s sales in Europe to be electrified models by 2022 to make sure it avoids EU fines that loom for automakers that fail to comply with tougher emissions regulations that start to take effect next year.

“We assumed the overall electrified market will be about 20 percent to 24 percent by 2022, but we want 42 percent in Europe,” he said.

Along with helping to meet CO2 targets, a high penetration of electrified models will be good for Nissan’s brand image, de Ficchy said.

“If you want a sustainable business model in Europe that meets both corporate and customer regulations, you need to be far above that average,” he said.

There are risks, however, the come with pulling the diesel from the Qashqai, which competes in a segment that had the highest number of diesel sales through 10 months, 621,242, and where models with the powertrain accounted for 44 percent of overall sales, according to JATO.

Switching to gasoline variants is difficult for customers in SUV segments because they are not as efficient, which results in a higher fuel bill.

The Volkswagen Tiguan, which overtook the Qashqai in terms of 10-month sales to lead the compact SUV sector, was also Europe’s top-selling diesel model overall through October.

When Nissan makes it move away from offering diesels in the segment it will join Toyota and Honda, which don’t offer the powertrain in the RAV4 and CR-V, respectively. Both brands focus on offering their compact SUVs as gasoline-electric hybrids instead.

Carlos Ghosn has spent more than a year trapped in a Japanese legal odyssey that’s transfixed the automotive world and thrown his life into chaos. Now, having pulled off a daring escape from Japan to Lebanon, he’s an international fugitive.

But the executive is also free to speak his mind fully, without legal filtering, for the first time since his surprise arrest on the tarmac at Haneda airport back in November 2018. And this much seems likely: The former head of Nissan Motor Co. and Renault SA has stories to tell and scores to settle.

At stake is Ghosn’s entire legacy. Will he be remembered as the brilliant, cost-cutting manager who rescued Nissan and built one of mightiest auto alliances in the industry? Or will he be just another name in a hall of infamy of white-collar fugitives?

Ghosn said in his statement from Lebanon on Tuesday that he would “finally communicate freely with the media, and look forward to starting next week.” So get ready for what’s likely to be a blistering public relations assault, starting with an expected press conference, that will rattle some cages in both Japan and France.

Based on past statements by Ghosn and his wife Carole, here’s a guide to what may be in store.

Japan’s Legal System

“I have not fled justice,” Ghosn said in the first emailed statement after his remarkable exit from Japan. “I have escaped injustice and political persecution.” An even more robust indictment of the nation’s legal system is likely in the weeks ahead.

Ghosn’s arrest revived long-standing concerns about the fairness of Japan’s judicial system, where prosecutors can grill suspects repeatedly without their lawyers present and enjoy an almost 100% conviction rate.

Under the terms of the executive’s bail, the courts restricted contact with his family. In his Dec. 31 statement, Ghosn called the Japanese justice system rigged and said his “basic human rights” had been denied, including the presumption of innocence. Those are issues that he almost certainly would have put on the world stage had his case come to trial.

Unholy Trinity

For months, Ghosn’s attorneys have been arguing that all of the charges against their client were bogus, the result of a broad conspiracy among nationalistic Nissan officials, Japanese prosecutors and the government itself.

The goal, according to Ghosn, was to smear him in order to prevent the executive from further integrating Nissan and France’s Renault, a plan that threatened the Japanese carmaker’s autonomy and was vehemently opposed in the highest echelons of Tokyo officialdom.

Corporate Assassins

In April, Ghosn was detained before a scheduled tell-all press conference, prompting his camp to release a pre-recorded video for such an eventuality.

In it, Ghosn spoke of several Nissan executives whom he claimed turned on him to advance their own interests. The original video named the people; that segment was edited out in the version released to the public.

“I’m talking here about a few executives who, obviously for their own interests and for their own selfish fears, are creating a lot of value destruction. Names? You know them,” Ghosn hinted in his video. Now, Ghosn may really be ready to disclose names.

Nissan’s Slide

In his video, Ghosn also criticized Nissan’s management for the company’s poor performance, saying they lost sight of the need to move the alliance with Renault forward.

“I’m worried because obviously the performance of Nissan is declining, but also I’m worried because I don’t think there is any vision for the alliance being built,” Ghosn said in the video.

Nissan’s earnings have tumbled to the lowest level in a decade and the stock was the worst performer on the Bloomberg World Auto Manufacturers Index last year (the second-worst was Renault), so he may hit that note again.

French Establishment

In several interviews, Ghosn’s wife, Carole, lashed out at the French establishment for not doing more to help the former head of Renault, who also is a French citizen.

In an interview with the Journal du Dimanche, she said President Emmanuel Macron hasn’t answered her pleas for help. “The silence from the Elysee Palace is deafening,” she said. “I thought France was a country that defended the presumption of innocence. They’ve all forgotten everything Carlos did for France’s economy and for Renault.”

It remains to be seen which talking points Ghosn will hit the hardest. Yet this much is clear: He is a fighter, and he has everything to lose if he can’t pull ahead in the PR war. That suggests his approach won’t be subtle.

Secondo me Netflix ne farà un film.

tive former Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn spoke to the media in Beirut on Wednesday after fleeing to Beirut last month from Tokyo, where he had been awaiting trial on charges of financial misconduct. Here are some quotes:

RENAULT-NISSAN INTEGRATION

"I was ready to retire before June 2018... I unfortunately accepted this offer to continue to integrate the two companies (Renault and Nissan)."Some of my Japanese friends thought that the only way to get rid of the influence of Renault on Nissan, was to get rid of me."

'A HANDFUL OF ... VINDICTIVE INDIVIDUALS'

"My unimaginable ordeal is the result of a handful of unscrupulous, vindictive individuals."

BASELESS CHARGES

"The charges against me are baseless."Why have they extended the investigation timeline, why have they rearrested me? Why were they so intent on preventing me from talking and setting out my facts?"Why have they spent 14 months trying to break my spirit, barring any contact with my wife?"(One reason) was that Nissan performance unfortunately started to decline at the beginning of 2017...in October 2016 I decided to remove myself from Nissan ... because I signed a deal with Mitsubishi. I moved to Mitsubishi as chairman of the board."

'UNMISSABLE' CHANCE TO ALLY WITH FIAT CHRYSLER

"In 2017, the alliance was the number one automotive group. Three companies growing, profitable. We were preparing to add Fiat Chrysler to the group because I was negotiating with John Elkann for Fiat Chrysler to join."The alliance missed the unmissable which is Fiat Chrysler. That is unbelievable, they go with PSA. How can you miss that huge opportunity to become the dominant player in the industry?"I had contact with FCA. We had a lot of understanding, we have very good dialogue, unfortunately I was arrested before we could come to a conclusion. (Ghosn had planned a meeting for January 2019 to try to conclude the deal.)"It's a great opportunity for PSA, it's a big waste for Renault."

NO MORE ALLIANCE

"They turned the wrong page because there is no more profit, there is no more growth, there is no more strategic initiative, no more technology, no more alliance. What we see today is a masquerade of an alliance."

INNOCENT

"I am innocent of all the charges."

As the Carlos Ghosn scandal unfolds with Hollywood-level kinds of drama and intrigue, it's refreshing to see the Japanese government launch its resources to rein in this fugitive from justice with all the righteous indignation of a nation that truly values international business ethics.

It's quite an about-face for a business culture that allowed the Takata exploding-airbag scandal that has claimed at least 24 lives, injured some 300 people and generated the largest safety recall in the history of the global auto industry. Another 10 million airbags were recalled in the U.S. last week, in fact.

But even more enlightening is how the prosecution and post-escape pursuit of Ghosn runs contrary to the Japanese practice of protecting its own business fugitives from justice, particularly when they stand accused by other countries of crimes that might not be considered serious in Japan.

Supply chain corruption

In the Takata scandal, the company in January 2017 agreed to pay a $1 billion U.S. criminal finefor its fraudulent conduct stemming from the lethal airbag defect. Three of its executives were charged with crimes in the U.S., but they stayed in Japan and never faced justice here.

"Warrants were issued at the time of the indictment and are still active," a U.S. Justice Department spokeswoman said in an email to Automotive News, declining further comment when asked about extradition efforts.

Perhaps more troubling is that for many years, dozens of Japanese auto supplierssystematically ripped off their customers — including their own affiliated Japanese automakers — in the U.S. and other countries. These suppliers allowed their sales executives to collude with competitors on the price of everything from ball bearings to wire harnesses. This institutional corruption resulted in countless billions of dollars in costs built into the price of light vehicles.

The antitrust arm of the Justice Department spent much of the past decade, during the Obama and Trump administrations, prosecuting these crimes. As of 2018, U.S. antitrust regulators said their work yielded $2.9 billion in fines and convictions of 46 suppliers and 32 executives. The vast majority of them are Japanese.

And while the companies themselves pleaded guilty and ponied up massive U.S. fines, as many as 20 individuals charged with crimes stayed in Japan, where they were protected from extradition. Some even kept their jobs. It's unclear whether the U.S. even attempted extradition — and very unlikely that it did. Japanese officials would have to cooperate in such a process.

To this day, these Japanese executives carry the same international fugitive status as Carlos Ghosn.

Ultimate irony

The ultimate irony here is that Ghosn was blamed, in part, for creating this culture of corruption in the Japanese supply chain when he saved Nissan in 1999. Back then, Ghosn helped cut Nissan's costs by dismantling the automaker's insular supplier keiretsu. He had the audacity to demand competitive bidding.

As my former Automotive News colleague Dave Guilford suggested during an interview with Ghosn in 2014, suppliers responded to Ghosn's demands by fixing prices.

"So it's my fault?" Ghosn responded, laughing. "That's a most original explanation."

"I had nothing against keiretsu," Ghosn added. "It was working for our competitors. But it wasn't working for us."

For the past year, Ghosn has been accused of a variety of economic crimes that, if true, might have cost Nissan tens of millions of dollars. If true. Yet Japan harbors fugitives who cost the entire auto industry far more, not to mention the loss of 24 lives, most of them in Hondas.

Japanese authorities may have very good reasons for their bitter, relentless pursuit of Ghosn and his family, but they might be wise to take a look in the mirror and stop protecting their own business fugitives from justice.

Ormai i giapponesi sembrano irremovibili.

Secondo me sì.

The chief executive of Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) said Luca de Meo, who stepped down as chief executive of the German carmaker’s Spanish Seat brand this month, was probably in talks with French carmaker Renault (RENA.PA).

FILE PHOTO: SEAT President and CEO Luca de Meo poses during an interview at the SEAT car factory in Martorell, near Barcelona, Spain October 31, 2018. Picture taken October 31, 2018. REUTERS/Albert Gea
The Italian-born de Meo has served as chairman of Seat’s executive committee for four years, overseeing a resurgence in the Barcelona-based company’s sales and boosting its prominence within the Volkswagen group.

“We are very, very sad that Luca is leaving us because he played a very important role in the group,” Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess told CNBC on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos.

“He did a great job with us but we accepted that he’s going to leave and he’s probably in talks with Renault, that’s what he told us,” Diess said.

Renault declined to comment on the matter on Thursday.

Renault Chairman Jean-Dominique Senard said this week that a new CEO would be named shortly.

De Meo has been in talks with Renault but faced a potential hurdle over a stringent non-compete clause in the contract, sources told Reuters previously.

The French state, which has a stake in Renault, has given its tacit backing to de Meo’s possible appointment.

“There’s no reason the state would oppose de Meo’s nomination,” a source at the economy ministry said.

In December, Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia cited anonymous sources as saying Renault - in the wake of the high-profile arrest of former boss Carlos Ghosn - had offered de Meo the job of chief executive.

Renault and its Japanese partner, Nissan Motor (7201.T), last week rejected media reports that their 20-year-old alliance was in danger of being dissolved.

Renault has appointed Luca de Meo, the former head of Volkswagen Group's Seat brand, as CEO as the automaker looks to move on from the Carlos Ghosn era.

De Meo has been a front-runner to replace ousted CEO Thierry Bollore for months but his appointment was delayed because he had a noncompete clause with VW Group.

De Meo, 52, will take up the post on July 1, Renault said in a statement on Tuesday. He replaces Clotilde Delbos, who took over as Renault's interim CEO after Bollore was ousted in October. Delbos will continue as interim CEO until de Meo takes office, Renault said. The board would like her to become deputy CEO after that, the statement said.

De Meo will be prohibited from disclosing competitive information for five months and must spend that time at his home before officially starting at Renault, the French newspaper Le Figaro reported Tuesday.

His hiring as CEO will need to be approved at Renault's general shareholders' meeting in April.

De Meo was CEO of VW Group's Seat brand for five years until he stepped down this month. He led Seat to record sales, including 517,600 in 2018, an 11 percent increase from 2017, and gave the brand a sportier image, creating the Cupra subbrand aimed at youthful buyers.

Challenges
De Meo's appointment marks a return to the company where he started his career in 1992 in product marketing.

After five years at Renault, he moved to Toyota Motor Europe as a product manager for the Yaris small car and the Lexus brand. In 2002 de Meo moved to Fiat Chrysler, where he led the Alfa Romeo, Abarth and eventually Fiat brands. In 2009 he moved to the VW Group, working first on marketing for the VW brand and then leading marketing and sales at Audi.

De Meo has an understanding of both French and Japanese culture and way of doing business. Those skills will be important at Renault, in which the French government holds a 15 percent stake in Renault and expects to be a partner in major business and strategic decisions.

He was born in Milan in 1967 and studied business administration at the city's Bocconi University. In addition to Italian, de Meo speaks English, French, German and Spanish.

De Meo will take operational charge of Renault under its chairman, Jean-Dominique Senard, when the French automaker faces challenges on all fronts.

Renault is struggling to move beyond the 2018 arrest of Ghosn, its long-time chairman and CEO, who was chairman of alliance partners Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors. Ghosn's departure exposed tensions that nearly tore the alliance apart, even as a weakening of demand in key markets has hurt sales and earnings.

The leaders of the embattled Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi alliance put forward a unified face by unleashing a new divide-and-conquer plan to bolster their troubled business.

The strategy calls for dividing the world geographically, with partners spearheading operations in the regions where they are strongest. And it adopts a leader-follower approach to engineering, in which they will divide responsibilities for r&d among them.

Details of the plan will be fleshed out by May, when the individual companies plan to individually announce new mid-term plans that take into account their production footprints and product development needs, Renault Chairman Jean-Dominique Senard said on Thursday.

But some directions are already clear. In terms of geographic responsibilities, Renault will take the lead in Europe, Nissan will be the director in China and Mitsubishi will head Southeast Asia. They did not specify a point company for North America, though Nissan is the biggest player there.

The companies will also divide engineering work, with one company leading r&d and product development in a given area and the other companies sending people to assist. This will differ from the old method which had teams, for example, in France and Japan working in tandem.

New areas to divvy up include the upper body of vehicles, where the alliance companies hope to eke out more synergies and commonization. They will also split work on platforms and powertrains. Renault will also be handed the lead in developing light commercial vehicles.

“The auto industry is facing big transformations,” Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida said while announcing the new approach. “We discussed how to fully utilize the strength of each entity.”

Connected Vehicles: When the Leader Doesn’t Always Win Alone

A global race is underway to digitize cars, and the perception is that the newcomers with a disruptive mentality have taken pole position.

The strategy was agreed to earlier in the day by the Alliance Operating Board, a new steering committee launched last March following the arrest of former alliance chairman Carlos Ghosn.

The push to improve efficiencies comes amid continued upheaval at world’s biggest auto group. Its leaders are fighting falling sales and shrinking profits and struggling to find joint projects that can boost results and deliver on the alliance’s promise of massive scale and combined resources.

Combined global deliveries for the alliance fell 5.6 percent to 10.2 million vehicles in 2019, below Toyota’s 10.7 million vehicle sales for the first time since 2016 and the 10.9 million sold last year by Volkswagen Group. Toyota’s sales climbed 1.4 percent and VW’s gained 1.3 percent.

Overcapacity is pressuring the automakers as they face spiraling costs for new technologies.

And all the while, the Alliance endures unprecedented sniping from Ghosn, who jumped bail in Japan and escaped to freedom in Lebanon where he paints the alliance as a failed “masquerade.”

The four-member panel is overseen by Senard, in his role as Ghosn’s successor, and seats the heads of Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi. But the Alliance Operating Board’s lineup has already seen significant churn since its creation less than a year ago. Two members are new since October.

Representing Renault is interim CEO Clotilde Delbos, who was appointed in October, and coming from Nissan is Uchida, took office as CEO only last month.

Mitsubishi Motors Corp. Chairman Osamu Masuko sits in for his carmaker.

At its start, the initial board was composed of Thierry Bollore from Renault SA, Hiroto Saikawa from Nissan Motor Co., along with Mitsubishi’s Masuko. At the time, Masuko served as both chairman and CEO of Mitsubishi. Masuko handed the CEO role to Takao Kato in June.

Over the last year, Bollore was pushed out at Renault. And just this week, Renault appointed Luca de Meo, the former head of Volkswagen Group's Seat brand, to replace Delbos from July 1.

Saikawa resigned in September after improperly receiving excessive payouts under a stock-linked executive compensation program. An acting CEO filled in until Uchida took office.

To give the so-called AOB more teeth, the partners created an alliance general secretary position last month who will coordinate major projects across the three carmakers.

They appointed Hadi Zablit to that role. Zablit had served as the alliance’s senior vice president of business development since March 2018, heading such programs as the development of the Common Module Family A platform, a shared architecture for small cars.

Zablit, who attended the Jan. 30 meeting, is charged with accelerating the efficiency of joint operations among the companies, in an effort to boost operating profits across the board.

Nissan will hold an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting on Feb. 18 to appoint Uchida and several other new directors to the Japanese carmaker’s board. The gathering will also be platform for the Nissan management to offer fresh details of its latest restructuring plans.

Aside from Uchida, shareholders will vote on approving COO Ashwani Gupta as a new director as well as Hideyuki Sakamoto, Nissan’s executive vice president in charge of manufacturing and supply chain management. Also up for appointment is Pierre Fleuriot, a Renault nominee.

Renault, which rescued Nissan form bankruptcy in 1999, has a 43 percent controlling stake in Nissan while Nissan holds a 15 percent, non-voting stake in Renault, whose top shareholder is the French government. Nissan took a controlling 34-percent stake in Mitsubishi in 2016.

Ghosn hires legendary agent Michael Ovitz for TV, film deals

Ovitz has been one of the entertainment industry's most prominent dealmakers since the 1980s.

Hollywood producers eager to dramatize the life of Carlos Ghosn, the former Nissan chairman who staged a cinematic escape from Japan in December, are likely to get a simple response: call my agent.

Not just any agent. Ghosn is working with Michael Ovitz, the founder of Creative Artists Agency and former president of Walt Disney , to explore film and TV projects.

A spokeswoman for Ghosn said Ovitz would assist with projects and evaluating proposals he has received, cautioning that any discussions are still preliminary.

A deal with a studio could be a significant financial boon to Ghosn, who forfeited $14 million in bail money when he fled Japan at the end of December, a move that one security expert estimated could have cost him another $15 million.

Ghosn's story -- which involves allegations of a high-level corporate coup and government collusion, followed by a dramatic extraction masterminded by a former Green Beret -- has the makings of a compelling film or mini-series at a time when companies from Netflix to Amazon are hungry for fresh content.

Few people in Hollywood are more familiar with such negotiations than Ovitz, who has been one of the entertainment industry's most prominent dealmakers since the 1980s.

At CAA he pioneered the practice of "packaging" film projects, putting together stars, screenwriters, and directors and shopping them to studios as a team.

Ovitz did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment outside of regular U.S. business hours.

In 1995, Ovitz joined Disney as the second-in-command to then-Chairman Michael Eisner -- a relationship that soon turned sour, leading Ovitz to depart the company after a little more than a year.

He received $140 million in severance payments, prompting a group of investors to unsuccessfully sue Disney's board, claiming it had wasted money hiring him.

Ovitz, who over the years worked with A-listers including Steven Spielberg and Meryl Streep, has never had a client with Ghosn's background.

The Brazilian-French-Lebanese auto executive, who spent much of late 2018 and early 2019 in solitary confinement in Tokyo, was facing four criminal charges in Japan, which together could have put him in prison for more than a decade. Two related to claims that he understated his compensation in official filings, while two more indictments, for "breach of trust," alleged that he misused Nissan's resources for his own benefit.

Ghosn was a household name in Japan even before his arrest, after turning around Nissan almost two decades ago. He became something of a corporate celebrity in the country, spawning numerous business books even a manga comic about his management style and time at the automaker.

The executive, who made his way to Lebanon via private jet, has denied wrongdoing, arguing the charges were part of a conspiracy by Nissan executives and Japanese government officials to halt his plans to integrate the company more closely with its top shareholder, Renault.
