Tutto su Nissan >> LISTINO PROVE SU STRADA FOTO NEWS OPINIONI

Renault reported its first loss in a decade and cut its 2020 margin target, as it attempts to draw a line under the Carlos Ghosn affair and reboot its Nissan alliance.

Renault posted an annual loss of 141 million euros ($153 million), compared with a profit of 3.3 billion euros in 2018, the automaker said in a news release on Friday. Operating income dropped 30 percent to 2.11 billion euros.

"It has been a tough year for Groupe Renault and the alliance," acting CEO Clotilde Delbos told a conference call, adding that the broader autos downturn had hit the company "right when we were facing internal difficulties."

The loss triggered a "no-taboos" commitment to cut structural costs by 2 billion euros ($2.2 billion) over the next three years. Renault did not exclude job cuts in a promised review of its performance across all factories.

Former Volkswagen Group executive Luca de Meo will start as Renault CEO in July. He and Chairman Jean-Dominique Senard will be charged with turning the page on a troubled era and shoring up Renault’s alliance with Nissan.

On Friday, Renault executives repeated assurances that the Nissan alliance was on track. Delbos acknowledged that investors were still skeptical, but said that the automakers would provide meatier joint goals by May.

Renault doesn’t have the "luxury" to wait until de Meo arrives in July, Delbos said.

Delbos stepped into the CEO role on an interim basis after Thierry Bollore, a long-standing Ghosn ally, was ousted in October. She will remain finance chief after de Meo becomes CEO.

Delbos said Renault's automotive operational free cash flow, under scrutiny from analysts, would be positive in 2020 after stripping out restructuring costs. "We are very confident that there is no topic on cash availability within the group," Delbos said.

Last year Nissan's contribution to Renault's income plunged to 242 million euros last year from 1.51 billion euros the year before. Renault has a 43 percent stake in Nissan, which earlier this week posted its first quarterly loss in nearly a decade and cut its profit forecast.

Renault was penalized by charges linked to some of its Chinese joint ventures. The company also booked a 753 million-euro charge related to the discontinuation of the recognition of deferred tax assets on tax losses in France.

Sales to partners were down 3.4 percentage points due to lower vehicle production for Nissan and Daimler, as well as the decline in demand for diesel engines in Europe. A sharp drop in CKD business in China and the end of CKD production in Iran also hit earnings.

Renault's group sales fell 3.3 percent to 55.53 billion euros in 2019.

For 2020, the automaker sees annual revenues in line with last year, leaving aside currency swings, and a group operating margin of between 3 percent and 4 percent, down from 4.8 percent in 2019.

Renault’s 2019 dividend will fall by more than two-thirds to 1.10 euros a share, it said.

Renault forecasts that the global auto market will fall in 2020, with sales in Europe and Russia down around 3 percent.

Renault has stumbled in several countries, including Argentina, and said it needed to fix its operations in China, where it has a partnership with Dongfeng on passenger cars vehicles and with Brilliance China Automotive Holdings on light commercial vehicles.

The automaker has a factory with Dongfeng in Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus epidemic, which has been in lockdown to contain the spread of the virus. It has also suspended operations for at least four days at its South Korean subsidiary in Busan due to supply chain hiccups.

Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi Corp could potentially take a 10% stake in French carmaker Renault as part of scenarios being discussed to reinforce an alliance between Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors, Les Echos newspaper reported on Thursday.

Restructuring plans, plant closures and cost savings schemes are being discussed, with changes in the capital structure of the three-way alliance also envisaged, Les Echos reported.

Renault could not be reached for immediate comment.

At present, Mitsubishi Corp has a 20% stake in Mitsubishi Motors, which counts Japan’s Nissan as its biggest shareholder.

Nissan in turn owns 15% of Renault and Renault has 43% of Nissan.

Renault and its alliance partner Nissan have the resources to weather the coronavirus crisis and will roll out strategic plans as scheduled in mid-May, the automakers’ top executives said.

Renault Chairman Jean-Dominique Senard and Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that the three-year strategic plans for the automakers and alliance member Mitsubishi were needed to restore investors’ confidence.

Renault and Nissan have seen their sales fall and profits evaporate in the 18 months since the November 2018 arrest of Carlos Ghosn, who had led the alliance as chairman and was also serving as chairman and CEO at Renault.

"If the plan is not well explained and understood, then the share price is not going to recover and people will not believe that Nissan can get back on its feet," Uchida said in the interview.

Since the beginning of the year, Renault's share price has fallen by 58 percent while Nissan's has fallen by 46 percent.

"The situation is quite clear: We can’t generate income because we can't sell,” Senard said, as showrooms remained closed because of coronavirus restrictions.

The two automakers, which have also been forced to temporarily close a large part of their production sites, are considering shutting down activities and products that have little chance of becoming profitable, the Wall Street Journal said.

Renault and Nissan announced a realignment of alliance functions in January. Research and engineering work will be divided to avoid duplication, and plans to increase shared parts and body components will be accelerated. But the coronavirus outbreak has disrupted those plans for a fresh start.

Factories at risk

Earlier, Uchida and Renault interim CEO Clothilde Delbos said there would be a thorough review of alliance operations and product plans, with “no taboos” as to what might be cut or postponed. Luca de Meo, the former CEO of Volkswagen’s Seat brand, will become Renault CEO in July, with Delbos as his deputy.

Citing sources familiar with the situation, the newspaper said Nissan could close factories in Spain, and the Renault brand could withdraw from the Chinese market, where Nissan is relatively strong.

Bloomberg reported in October that Nissan was gauging interest from potential buyers for its factories in Sunderland, England, and Barcelona, Spain, and that divesting one or both facilities was an option as Nissan's market share in Europe has plummeted. Potential buyers could include Chinese automakers, sources told Bloomberg.

Renault returned to China in 2016, a market it had previously left to Nissan, when it opened a factory in Wuhan with Dongfeng Motor. Former CEO Carlos Ghosn had targeted annual sales of up to 800,000 vehicles. Its volume in China fell 17 percent to 179,571 in 2019, Renault said on Jan. 17 when it released global sales results for st year.

Renault and Nissan have sought to reassure investors about their liquidity. Renault can call on state-guaranteed credit that it has not yet requested and has a credit line of 3.5 billion euros ($3.8 billion), while Nissan can make use of a credit line worth around $12 billion dollars (11 billion euros).

Other automakers have either drawn on credit lines or set up new ones in an effort to prepare for the financial shock of the coronavirus pandemic.

"Their words are intended to be reassuring in a context where carmakers are being badly hit by the markets, and rightly so given the drastic drop in sales in the Covid-19 era," Gregoire Laverne, European equity manager at Apicil Asset Management, said of the interview with Senard and Uchida.

PARIS -- Renault Group said it will stop selling Renault brand passenger cars in China and will focus on light commercial vehicles and electric vehicles in the market.

The automaker will transfer its shares in the Dongfeng Renault Automotive Company joint venture to Dongfeng Motor, Renault said in a news release on Tuesday. Dongfeng will stop its Renault brand-related activities, the release said.

Renault's joint venture with Dongfeng in Wuhan builds the Renault Captur, Kadjar and KoleosSUVs as well as powertrains.

Renault's LCV business in China will continue to be operated through Renault Brilliance Jinbei Automotive. Its EV business will be developed through the two existing joint ventures: eGT New Energy Automotive and Jiangxi Jiangling Group Electric Vehicle.

Renault said it will continue to provide aftersales service for its 300,000 customers through Renault dealers and through its alliance with Nissan.

Renault and Dongfeng will continue to cooperate with Nissan on engines and components supply to Dongfeng and license diesel  to Dongfeng. Renault and Dongfeng will cooperate on intelligent connected vehicles.

Dongfeng Motor has joint ventures in Wuhan with PSA Group and Honda.

17 when it released global sales results for last year.

Promote health. Save lives. Visit who.int
I vincoli.

Per adesso no.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... f=0isIFblR

Nissan was a troubled company even before the coronavirus pandemic put half of the planet on hold so the Japanese giant’s problems are now even worse.
Earlier this year, the automaker’s CEO, Makoto Uchida, was urged by Nissan shareholders and U.S. dealers to speed up the company’s revival. Later this month, he is due to reveal a recovery plan which is expected to include massive cost cuts.

According to an exclusive report from Reuters, the Japanese company plans to massively reduce its presence in Europe and elsewhere to focus on three major markets: the United States, China and Japan. The news agency’s sources are “people with direct knowledge of the plan.”

Read Also: Frustrated U.S. Nissan Dealers Blast New CEO About Aging Products, Tactics

The restructuring plan is said to be led mainly by Chief Operating Officer Ashwani Gupta
The unnamed insiders said the “operational performance plan,” set to be announced on May 28, represents a new strategic direction for the carmaker. It goes beyond fixing problems stemming from the aggressive expansive drive pursued under ousted leader Carlos Ghosn. That strategy led to steep discounts and a cheapened brand, especially in the United States.

The sources said the new, three-year plan aims to restore dealer ties and refresh lineups so that Nissan becomes profitable again by regaining pricing power. The plan aims to free resources to invest in products and technology for the core markets of the United States, China and Japan.

Plans for the U.S. market include lowering the average age of Nissan’s lineup from over 5 years to 3.5 years, as well as the launch of new and significantly redesigned cars, including the next-gen Rogue SUV. Nissan will also cut sales to rental and other fleet operators.

Nissan’s only surviving models in Europe will likely be the Juke and Qashqai crossovers
Mind you, focusing on the U.S., China and Japan does not mean Nissan will fully retreat from other markets. In Europe, for example, Nissan will try to maintain a presence by ramping up efforts with the Qashqai and Juke crossovers.

In Asia, the carmaker plans to further increase sales in Thailand and the Philippines. Together with Australia, these two markets generate roughly 90 percent of sales and profit in the region (excluding China, Japan and India). As for other markets, the plan calls for tighter, targeted lineups in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Russia, Brazil and Mexico. For example, Nissan will focus on the Patrol SUV in Africa and the Middle East.

As a result of these major changes, Nissan will likely need to shut down more than the 14 assembly lines announced in July. This will reduce the carmaker’s global production capacity from over 7 million vehicles based on three daily shifts per plant to 5.5 million based on two shifts per plant. The restructuring plan also calls for less overlap and more cooperation with Alliance partners Renault and Mitsubishi.

Renault is preparing to ax slow-selling minivans and sedans to focus on SUVs and crossovers, four sources in the industry and close to the automaker said.

The Espace and the Scenic minivans, and the Talisman large sedan, will not be part of the automaker's future product program as Renault seeks to cut costs, one of the sources said. Although no final decision has been taken, "it is practically a given that these models will stop," the source said.

Renault last overhauled of its range in 2009 but it still has between 45 and 50 models in its catalog under its own brand as well as in its Dacia, Renault Samsung, Lada and Alpine ranges.

PSA, Renault's French competitor, followed a similar path six years ago, when it announced it would cut the number of its models to 26 from 45 over its three main brands, with the aim of saving 300 million euros a year.

"Renault is far more international than its compatriot, whose sales remain focused on Europe," another source said. "But even if Renault's geographical diversity is the factor behind its high number of models, that level is not sustainable anymore."

The Espace, which has sold 1.3 million units since its launch in 1984, would be the most notable to go. The car became the standard bearer, in Europe at least, for the minivan segment. The fifth generation of the model, on the market since 2015, has however struggled against competition from SUVs.

The Espace, as well as the Scenic, another one of Renault's former bestsellers, would give way to a new Kadjar SUV built in Spain with five-seat and seven-seat versions, two sources said.

Those two models as well as the Talisman are all built in Renault's factory in Douai, in northern France. But the site would remain active with the planned assembly of two new models based on the Renault-Nissan alliance's new electric vehicle platform.

Renault sold 77,507 Scenics in Europe last year, down 16 percent on the year before, according to data from JATO Dynamics market researchers. Talisman sales fell 20 percent to 15,826. Sales of the Espace also dropped by 20 percent, to just 9,561 units.

The automaker has been shaken by the downfall of its former CEO Carlos Ghosn and by setbacks on its main markets. The company last year posted its first net loss in 10 years and has been hit hard like its peers by the coronavirus crisis.

Renault is 15 percent owned by the French state. It is negotiating a 4 billion to 5 billion euro aid package with the government to withstand the impact of the drop in sales and production due to the pandemic.

Renault declined to comment.

To cut costs and boost its profitability, Renault also plans to extract more synergies from its alliance with Nissan and Mitsubishi, sell real estate assets and shut down operations in loss-making markets such as China.

Acting CEO Clotilde Delbos has said there would be no taboo in cutting costs, raising fears of job cuts and plant closures. That is likely to be politically sensitive in France, however, especially when the automaker is in talks over state aid.

The company is expected to detail at the end of the month how it aims to cut costs by two billion euros ($2.16 billion) over the next three years. That will coincide with Renault's embattled Japanese alliance partner Nissan's own strategic update, set to be outlined on May 28 and which could encompass a pullback from Europe and elsewhere to focus on the U.S., China and Japan.

Mah in renault...

Allora si vendevano 350.000 Scenic all'anno.

Mai präsentieren will.

Nissan is working on a plan to scale back its European business, focusing on SUVs and commercial vehicles as well as more effective sharing of products and investments with partner Renault, three sources told Reuters.

The strategy would see the automaker's plant in Sunderland, northeast England, switch permanently to two daily shifts from three, but become a key hub for SUVs.

It could also see the company's Barcelona factory in Spain close, putting around 3,000 jobs at risk, said the sources with knowledge of the plan, who declined to be named because they are not authorized to speak to the media. Nissan has told union leaders at the Barcelona plant that they will be informed about the factory's future before summer.

Nissan may build the Renault Kadjar and Captur SUVs at the Sunderland plant, the Financial Times reported on May 13. The Renault SUVs share the same underpinnings as the Nissan Qashqai and Juke, which are built in Sunderland.

The Europe strategy is part of a three-year global turnaround plan due to be unveiled on May 28.

Central to the proposal is a new way of working with alliance partner Renault that would see the two companies divide up areas of responsibility, with one becoming the "leader" and the other the "follower" in each.

The sources said Nissan's plan for Europe was presented to the company's board on Thursday by chief operating officer Ashwani Gupta, who they said was the leading advocate and key architect of the new leader-follower model.

They added many on the board, whose 12 members include Renault Chairman Jean-Dominique Senard, showed support for the plan, without giving details.

Nissan declined to comment. Renault did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Staying in Europe
Europe has long been a difficult market for automakers due to overcapacity, stiff competition and tight regulations. General Motors quit the region in 2017.

Europe accounts for only about one-tenth of Nissan's global business by volume and has "little prospects for growth and profitability," as one insider put it.

However, the company is keen to maintain a presence in the region, albeit a reduced one.

"We need to be in Europe to keep up with regulations and keep our technology competitive, even though we cannot go for exponential growth," one of the sources said.

Under the new working relationship with Renault, Nissan would take the lead in Europe on crossovers and SUVs, which the sources said would be available in gasoline engine, hybrid and full-electric versions.

It would operate as a "follower" in commercial vans and small city cars, using versions of vehicles produced by Renault.

The arrangement would allow the two partners to share technologies and manufacturing capacity, while keeping advanced technology and product development separate from each other to "keep our design, engineering and brands distinctive from each other," one of the sources said.

That is an attempt to resolve a major source of tension under former Renault-Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn, who sought to cut costs equally at the partners as well as merge new technology and product R&D. Many at Nissan viewed the move as an effort by Renault to ride free on what they believe are Nissan's superior engineering capabilities.

In terms of models, Nissan's main products in Europe would be narrowed to the Qashqai and the Juke built in Sunderland, plus the X-Trail SUV and the Ariya battery-electric crossover due to hit the market soon, shipped to Europe from Japan, the sources said.

Likely out would be the sporty Z and GT-R models, as well as the Navara pickup made in Barcelona, they said.

The product line would be supplemented by some of Renault-produced commercial vans and small cars to give the brand scale and provide dealers with enough vehicles.

The Sunderland factory has been operating below capacity and with a cloud over its future due to Britain's departure from the European Union.

One of the sources said the plan for the plant depended on the new trading relationship agreed between London and Brussels, but that Nissan expected the UK government to adopt supportive policies.

In forging the new relationship with Renault, Nissan's Gupta is adapting and expanding a business model he began developing when leading Renault's light commercial vehicles unit.

The Indian-born executive revived the unit and then created a leader/follower arrangement with Nissan's commercial vehicle business that saw Nissan building vans using Renault's vehicle underpinning technologies and Nissan providing Renault with technologies for pickups.

Renault and Nissan have long struggled to achieved the full potential of their alliance, due in part to tensions over areas of control.

Relations were then strained to almost breaking point in November 2018 when Ghosn, the alliance's long-standing leader, was arrested in Japan on financial misconduct charges, which he denies.

Nissan's sales and profits have been sliding ever since, and the hammer blow to the global car industry from the coronavirus epidemic has only added to the urgency for the company to come up with a strategy to secure its future.

Renault is also working on its own restructuring plan that will also be unveiled on May 28.

PARIS — French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said that Renault could go out of business if it does not get help very soon to cope with the fallout from the coronavirus crisis, while adding that the automaker also needed to adapt to the situation.

In an interview on Europe 1 radio on Friday, Le Maire also said that Renault's plant in Flins outside of Paris must not close and that automaker should try to keep as many jobs as possible in France, but should also remain competitive.

"Yes, Renault could disappear," Le Maire. Renault is due to present details of a cost-cutting plan to save 2 billion euros ($2.2 billion) in expenses in the next two years. First-quarter revenue fell 19 percent to 10.1 billion euros, with sales in Europe falling 36 percent as the effects of coronavirus lockdowns started to be felt.

Among the options being considered are closing several small component plants in France and the Alpine assembly site in Dieppe, France; and ending assembly at the historic Flins plant outside of Paris, although it could be repurposed for other uses.

Slow-selling models could also be discontinued, including the Espace minivan and Talisman midsize sedan.

Le Maire added that Renault Group Chairman Jean-Dominique Senard was working hard on the new strategy plan, and that Senard had the support of the French government.

In a separate interview, Le Maire told the newspaper Le Figaro that he had not yet signed off on a 5 billion euro ($5.5 billion) loan for Renault, and that discussions were continuing. The European Union has granted approval for the loan.

He added that the government was seeking commitments from automakers in three areas in return for help during the coronavirus crisis: electric vehicles; the fair treatment of sub-contractors; and that they base advanced technology activities in France. The French government has also asked automakers to relocate vehicle production in France.

"Renault is fighting for its survival," Le Maire said in the interview published late on Thursday. "I haven't yet signed the loan."

Sources told Reuters on Monday that Renault had reached an agreement on the loan with banks and that it should be submitted to the board of directors soon, before being formally approved by the finance ministry.

450 million euros in crisis aid
Le Maire said France's response to the worst depression since World War II totaled 450 billion euros in aid and state guarantees, an amount equal to 20 percent of the country’s annual national output.

The government forecasts that the euro zone's second-biggest economy will shrink at least 8 percent this year. Its budget deficit is set to hit a postwar record of 9 percent of economic output this year.

The European Union has granted member countries all the fiscal leeway they need to deal with the economic impact of the coronavirus, enabling governments to open the spending taps and waveve aside EU budget rules that limit government borrowing.

There is no time limit set in the flexibility clause allowing this. Nonetheless, Le Maire said he hoped the rules would remain suspended in 2021.

"Nothing would be worse than reviving the economic machine while applying the brake on public spending," he said.
