Daimler on Friday said it had put on hold a development alliance in the area of automated driving between its Mercedes-Benz brand and rival BMW.

"Following extensive review, the two companies have arrived at a mutual and amicable agreement to concentrate on their existing development paths, which may also include working with new partners," Daimler said in a statement.

Daimler said the cooperation, which was announced in 2019, may resume at a later date.

BMW and Daimler said last year that they had entered into a long-term development partnership to develop highly automated driving functions to enable "hands off" autonomous driving on highways as well as automated parking.

BMW said at the time the non-exclusive cooperation was open to other automakers and technology partners.

In 2018, BMW and Daimler merged their short-term rental services Car2Go and DriveNow in a bid to create more of a presence in the developing mobility market.

Mini has offered the first official hints about how it plans to expand its electrified line-up, following the recent launch of the all-electric Mini hatchback.

Outlining its product strategy for the near future, the brand said it will "enable customers all over the world to have emission-free driving with a completely electrified model family" while still offering "highly efficient petrol and diesel engines, which continue be an ideal solution for target groups and regions whose mobility needs are not yet met by all-electric vehicles".

Confirmed to be joining the new Mini Electric in showrooms will be a new crossover EV, which was first detailed by Autocar earlier this year. Developed as part of the brand's Chinese joint venture with Great Wall Motors, it will sit atop a new platform and take its power from a new generation of cobalt-free batteries of undisclosed capacity.

Further details of the new EV are thin on the ground, but it's possible it will revive the dormant Paceman nameplate and go on to form the basis of a replacement for parent company BMW's eight-year-old i3 hatchback.

A date for the electric crossover's launch has not yet been given, but the Zhangjiagang factory where it will be built, 85 miles from Shanghai, is set to go into operation in 2022. The factory will also build the long-awaited production version of the 2011 Rocketman concept, which will be positioned below the Mini Electric in the maker's line-up.

Likely to share the bulk of its powertrain and platform with the Chinese-market Ora K1, the Rocketman will be heavily geared towards urban use, with a maximum range of around 218 miles and ultra-compact proportions, including a length of less than 3.5m.

The product strategy also mentions a new EV in the small car segment, which will likely be the MPV-shaped Traveller scooped by Autocar earlier this year.

As reported by Autocar, that model will use BMW's front- and four-wheel-drive-compatible FAAR platform and be available with combustion and plug-in hybrid powertrains in addition to the fully electric option.

Mirroring BMW's 'Power of Choice' approach, Mini remains committed to developing new combustion powertrains alongside the ramp-up of its electric offering. The next-generation Countryman SUV, for example, will continue to be available with pure-combustion and electrified powertrains, while the brand's 'small car models' will retain combustion engines exclusively.

Also set to receive a combustion option is a new crossover model, which, Mini brand boss Bernd Körber previously told Autocar, will be similar in size to its BMW X3 sibling, making it Mini's largest model to date.

The brand is marking 20 years since its resurrection at the hands of BMW following the collapse of the MG Rover Group several years previously. While it is plotting expansion into new, larger model lines, it remains committed to "creative use of space" and says every new model of the brand will "continue to be a typical Mini, with a maximum of interior space, exciting drive and individuality, achieved on the smallest footprint amongst its competitors".

Körber said: "It is part of our responsibility to the brand and the community to preserve the unique character of Mini. That is why every new model from our brand in future will be unmistakably a Mini."

Scelte alquanto curiose :?

FRANKFURT -- BMW said it will retool its German factories to build electric cars and components and shift manufacturing of combustion engines to plants in England and Austria as part of a broader shift toward low-emissions cars.

"By the end of 2022 all our German factories will make at least one fully electric car," Milan Nedeljkovic, BMW's board member responsible for production, said in a statement on Wednesday.

BMW's plant in Munich, Germany, which currently builds 4-, 6-, 8- and 12-cylinder combustion engines, will be retooled to make next-generation electric vehicles with a 400 million euro investment until 2026.

BMW said production of 8- and 12-cylinder engines will move from Munich to Hams Hall in England, and other engines will be made in Steyr, Austria.

Plants in Munich, Dingolfing and Regensburg in the German state of Bavaria, where BMW is based, will receive most of the investments.

The BMW i4 full-electric car will be built in Munich; a full-electric version of the 5-series and 7-series cars will be made in Dingolfing, Germany; and an electric X1 will be produced in Regensburg.

BMW said the number of staff at its Dingolfing factory making electric car powertrains, will double to 2,000 workers.

BMW's plant in Leipzig, Germany, will start manufacturing the Mini Countryman in combustion engine and electric versions, and the Regensburg and Leipzig plants are being prepared to make battery modules.

BMW will improve its cost structure by 500 million euros by the end of the year, the company also said.

Factories across the globe are clamoring for investment into next-generation cars as electric vehicles gain traction with consumers and as governments hasten the demise of the combustion engine.

Germany on Wednesday unveiled a 3-billion-euro ($3.56 billion) scheme to promote low-emissions cars and Britain said it will ban the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars and vans from 2030.

Munich. The BMW Group is speeding up the shift towards electromobility and strengthening its global network for production of electrified vehicles. The company is investing 400 million euros in a new vehicle assembly at the main plant in Munich and concentrating its European production activities for internal combustion engines at the Steyr and Hams Hall locations. “We are systematically implementing our electrification strategy. By the end of 2022, each of our German plants will be producing at least one fully electric vehicle,” according to Milan Nedeljković, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production.

The BMW Group has one of the automotive industry's most flexible production systems worldwide. “We are capable of producing both vehicles with combustion engines and electric drive trains on a single line and responding flexibly to customer requests,” said Nedeljković: “This is a crucial success factor.” Nedeljković has been in charge of the Production Division for just over a year. “During the Covid-19 crisis, we have proved that we can respond swiftly and effectively to even highly volatile market developments and, at the same time, permanently improve our cost structure,” underlined the Production head. “The progress made this year will reduce our fixed costs by about half a billion euros by the end of the coming year.

Construction of new vehicle assembly at Plant Munich

The BMW Group is systematically gearing its main plant in Munich towards the future. Following the expansion of the body shop and construction of a new resource-efficient paint shop between 2016 and 2018, the company will be investing around 400 million euros in a new vehicle assembly between now and 2026. “We are continually developing Plant Munich towards electromobility and creating efficient and competitive production structures for this purpose,” explained Nedeljković. “This decision signals our strong commitment to the Munich location.”

Manfred Schoch, Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board and Chairman of the European and General Works Council of BMW AG: “The decision to build a new assembly at our almost 100-year-old Munich plant shows that transformation can secure, and even create, industrial jobs in the heart of the city – if it is approached strategically, and with courage. This decision provides a model for successful transformation in the German industry.”

The future assembly and its production processes will be designed for a new cluster architecture geared towards electric drive trains. Nedeljković: “This architecture will be in use from the middle of the decade. It will ramp up for the first time at our future plant in Debrecen, Hungary, before being rolled out across our global production network in stages.”

The new assembly in Munich will be built on the site currently used for engine production. The combustion engines with four, six, eight and 12 cylinders produced there will be manufactured at the company’s locations in Steyr in Austria and Hams Hall in the UK going forward. “Restructuring our engine production network is a strategic move geared towards the future. We are also boosting our efficiency and optimising our capacity utilisation,” explained Nedeljković.

Engine production will be relocated from Munich in stages by no later than 2024.

The employees will go on to work in different planning and production areas at the Munich location or other sites in Bavaria. At its Competence Centre for E-Drive Production in Dingolfing alone, the company will increase employee numbers from 1,000 currently to up to 2,000. “The transformation of our plants and securing future jobs go hand in hand,” underlined Ilka Horstmeier, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Human Resources, with regard to the upcoming structural changes in engine production. “Here in Munich, we will prove once again that the BMW workforce can handle change. Our employees will receive intensive support and training throughout this process.” More than 50,000 people at BMW Group have already been trained for electromobility since 2009.

Transformation towards electromobility

The realignment of the production network is based on three priorities: transformation towards electromobility and digitalisation; efficiency of processes and structures; and sustainability in production and logistics. The expansion of electromobility in the production network continues. Our Chinese plant in Dadong also began producing the BMW iX3* this year. “By the end of 2022, all German plants will have at least one fully-electric vehicle in their programme,” underlined Nedeljković. From next year, the BMW i4 and BMW iX* will come off the production lines in Munich and Dingolfing respectively. Fully-electric variants of the new BMW 7 Series and the future BMW 5 Series are also ready to go in Dingolfing. Plant Regensburg will also start manufacturing the new BMW X1 in 2022, which will be available both with an combustion engine and a fully-electric drive train. From 2023, BMW Group Plant Leipzig, which has built the iconic BMW i3* electric car since 2013, will produce the successor to the MINI Countryman, with a combustion engine and as a fully-electric variant.

At the same time, the BMW Group is expanding its capacity for manufacturing electric drive trains. The company is investing in production equipment for highly integrated e-drives and high-voltage batteries at the Competence Centre for E-Drive Production in Dingolfing. The Leipzig and Regensburg locations are also currently setting up equipment for production of battery modules and high-voltage batteries from 2021. In parallel, the company is also increasing production capacity for e-drive housings at Plant Steyr.

“Allocating capacity in this way places a deliberate emphasis on the flexibility of our plants and makes them more efficient and more competitive. Long-term agreements with employee representatives also play an important part in this,” added Nedeljković

BMW will underpin all vehicles sold by the automaker's namesake brand with a new electric-focused architecture to be introduced in 2025.

The New Class (Neue Klasse in German) platform is designed to be fully electric but will also underpin cars with gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines, including plug-in hybrids.

The architecture will offer rear-wheel drive as standard, with the option to add front-wheel drive for all-wheel drive.

Over time, the New Class will replace BMW's current two architectures:

The UKL small platform used for BMW compact cars and by Mini. It can accommodate fwd and awd cars. UKL was launched in 2014 on the Mini hatchback.
The CLAR larger platform, featuring rwd and awd, used for the rest of the BMW range. It was launched in 2015 with the 7-Series sedan.
The UKL and CLAR architectures were originally developed for combustion engines, including plug-in hybrid cars. They were given a substantial overhaul with a new central floor to house battery-electric cars and long-range plug-in hybrids.

For CLAR, the upgrade came last year with the introduction of the iX3 midsize full-electric SUV. The coming i4 midsize electric sedan and iX flagship electric SUV, both due this year, will use this platform. Full-electric versions of the 5 Series and 7 Series will follow in the next few years.

This upgraded CLAR also allows plug-in hybrid models to have larger batteries, enabling the cars to travel for longer distances on electric power only.

The New Class architecture will be the central pillar in BMW's plan to have full-electric models account for at least 50 percent of its global deliveries by 2030, with all its model series offering a battery power-only option.

Even before the introduction of the New Class architecture in 2025, BMW said its current architectures will allow the company to sell at least one full-electric model in 90 percent of its current market segments by 2023.

BMW has learned a lot about how to scale an architecture since the launch of the first generation of the 3 Series Compact architecture, introduced in 2004 on shortened 3 Series sedan underpinnings, technology chief Frank Weber told reporters during a media round table on Wednesday.

"We are able to scale it size-wise from the 2-Series coupe up to X7 with the existing one (CLAR)," he said.

BMW is using the same building principles with the New Class architecture, which will serve "the entire BMW product portfolio," Weber said.

The architecture will have an aerodynamic design aimed at electric vehicles with different proportions than in the past, including a more spacious interior, BMW said. It will also have a new high-voltage battery concept with an improved cell design. An electric drivetrain based on the hydrogen fuel cell is also an option.

Digital first approach

The platform will also have "technology stacks" that can be adapted for different regions, allowing the vehicle's operating system to be customized to suit the varying requirements and digital ecosystems in each of the world's major markets. The stacks will also allow continuous upgrades to ensure that the operating system stay up to date.

The digital first approach integrated in the architecture will enable customers to book and configure features throughout their vehicle's lifecycle. This will generate a significant share of the company's revenues in the future, BMW said.

BMW has not disclosed what the smallest car underpinned by New Class will be. It's possible that the next 1-Series could switch to this new rwd/awd architecture. The current generation does not have rwd.

The 1 Series is based on the longer UKL-2 architecture that also underpins 2 Series models except the Coupe and Grand Coupe. UK-2 also underpins the X1 and X2 compact SUVs, and the Mini Clubman and Countryman.

Mini's China route

Weber said that future Minis will use an architecture designed with electromobility as its focal point and co-developed with Chinese joint-venture partner Great Wall Motor.

Mini currently sells a battery-powered Mini hatchback based on the shorter UKL-1 architecture, built at the company's plant in Oxford, England. The Mini Countryman's successor will be offered with full-electric and combustion engines. It will be produced at BMW's plant in Leipzig, Germany, starting in 2023.

BMW said that future Mini full-electric cars will also be produced in China with Great Wall, starting in 2023.

The next Countryman will be based on the new vehicle architecture developed with Great Wall.

BMW CEO Oliver Zipse has confirmed earlier reports that Mini will sell only battery-powered cars by the early 2030s. The last Mini with a combustion-engine variant will be released in 2025, he said.

BMW and Great Wall announced a 50-50 joint venture in November 2019 called Spotlight Automotive. The JV will build a new plant with an initial annual production capacity of up to 160,000 vehicles. It is expected to begin operations in late 2022.

BMW already builds vehicles in China, with its long-time local partner Brilliance, including the electric iX3, which is exported globally including to Europe and the U.S.

will underpin the company's future electric cars, is being developed to have longer driving ranges and faster charging times than its current EVs as well a new software functions, while reducing battery pack costs by 50 percent.

BMW will launch output of its first Neue Klasse cars at its new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, in 2025 and then in Munich that same year.

BMW will initially produce a midsize sedan and SUV on the Neue Klasse underpinning.

"Within the first two years, we will then expand the Neue Klasse by four more vehicles," Weber said. "You can easily imagine that a lot can be created from the middle downward to smaller vehicles as well as upward to larger vehicles

At BMW, the Neue Klasse embodies the automaker's transition to electric and digital mobility. A dedicated 800-volt electrical architecture was developed for this purpose.

At the heart of the system is a high-voltage battery that dispenses with a modular design. Instead of sitting on a base plate, the battery pack is part of the vehicle's body structure to reduce weight and assembly cost. For the batteries, BMW will switch to cylindrical cells from prismatic cells.

The advantages are better packaging, lower overall height and higher energy density.

The BMW i3 was considered revolutionary when it was released 10 years ago.
The sixth generation of the BMW eDrive will make its debut in Neue Klasse models. The new system is lighter, more compact and more than 40 percent more cost-effective than the eDrive version used today. Its energy consumption is forecast to be up to 25 percent lower than today's version.

The Neue Klasse represents the largest investment in BMW's history. The electrical architecture is designed to cover the automaker's entire portfolio.

The Neue Klasse technology will underpin six models before the end of the decade.

The iX3 SUV (code-named NA5) is due in late 2025. It will be built at BMW's new factory in Hungary. An extended iX3 version (NA6) will be built in China.

In 2026, BMW will start production of a 3 Series-sized sedan (code-named NA0) at its Munich plant. Later, production will launch in Mexico and China.

A coupe-styled sedan called the iX4 (code-named NA7) is also expected in 2026, and a station wagon variant is due in 2027.

The sixth model is a compact SUV (code-named NB5), which is expected to replace the iX1.

With the arrival of the Neue Klasse, BMW is expected to introduce a new nomenclature to avoid confusing customers during the transition to the electric age.

The 3 Series-sized electric sedan would be designated as the i320 or i330 depending on the specification, while the 3-Series combustion engine cars would be designated as the 320 and 330, dropping the "i" for gasoline versions and "d" for diesel versions.
