Daimler is revamping the management of its finance, production and development portfolios to remove duplicate layers between Mercedes-Benz and Daimler.

The reorganization will see Daimler's top management tighten control over the group's flagship Mercedes-Benz luxury-car unit.

The changes include:

Markus Schaefer will become Daimler's chief operating officer. He is currently the management board member for research.
Wolf-Dieter Kurz will take on responsibility for product strategy and steering at Mercedes-Benz Cars. He is currently responsible for the business cases of product projects.
Daimler CEO Ola Kallenius will take over responsibility for Mercedes Vans from Wilfried Porth, who retains his role as head of human resources. Porth will focus on personnel restructuring measures.
Mercedes-Benz Chief Financial Officer Frank Lindenberg will leave Daimler and hand his responsibilities to Daimler's Chief Financial Officer Harald Wilhelm.

The changes take effect on April 1, Daimler said in a news release on Thursday.

Daimler named Markus Schaefer to the new post of chief operating officer, promoting the executive to No. 2 at the automaker after CEO Ola Kallenius.
Daimler is the world’s best-selling premium automaker and largest producer of commercial vehicles. It suffered a steep decline in profit last year that forced the company to slash the dividend to the lowest level since the financial crisis.

At the vans unit, a relatively small part of the business, earnings before interest and taxes swung to a negative 3.1 billion euros ($3.35 billion) in 2019.

After three profit warnings in less than a year as CEO, Kallenius last week promised to deliver on significantly higher margins and said he will consider selling assets to channel more money into automaking.

Geely is actively seeking a deeper collaboration with Mercedes owner Daimler, according to the Chinese carmaker’s Chairman Li Shufu.
2020 is an important year for Geely, which plans to “launch several new products and services to our markets around the world”, according to Li who spoke to Reuters. The Chinese automotive giant is also planning to finally launch its Lynk & Co brand in Europe this year as well.

Geely holds a 9.69% stake in Daimler since 2018, with the two companies already formed a 50:50 joint venture in China to build the next-generation of Smart EV models under the name ‘Smart Automobile’.

The near-10 percent stake makes Geely Daimler’s largest equity stakeholder, followed by Kuwait’s Sovereign Savings Fund (6.8%) and Chinese BAIC Group (5%).

Back in January, reports suggested that Daimler and Volvo -which is owned by Geely- were in talks about combining their forces on the development of internal combustion engines for cost-cutting reasons.

Daimler Truck and Volvo Group have already formed a joint venture for the development and series-production of hydrogen fuel cells in the truck division, with the goal of launching the first hydrogen-powered trucks and buses after 2025.

Geely has a wide brand portfolio that includes not only Volvo and Lynk & Co, but Lotus, London Electric Vehicle Company, Proton, and Polestar in addition to their stake in Daimler.

The company’s chairman Li Shufu also added that the Chinese market is returning to normal, claiming that the pandemic-related disruption in the global auto supply chain is “temporary and manageable”.

Renault is looking to breathe fresh life into its flagging partnership with Daimler, just as the German company has focused on working with BMW and Geely.

The collaboration started in 2010, when the Renault-Nissan alliance and Daimler announced plans to develop a platform for the Smart and Twingo minicars. To demonstrate their commitment, Daimler took a 3.1 percent stake in Renault and Nissan each, while the Franco-Japanese alliance acquired a 3.1 percent stake in Daimler.

Renault-Nissan and Daimler have worked together on more than a dozen joint projects, but momentum ground to a halt in 2016. No new projects have since been announced and only one, the Renault Kangoo-based Mercedes-Benz Citan urban delivery van, has been extended.

Renault Chairman Jean-Dominique Senard told reporters on Friday that he and interim CEO Clothilde Delbos “decided at the end of last year to re-trigger that alliance, because it was well worth it.”

“I can tell you that from the CEO of Daimler we got a very positive reaction and we are working very regularly with his teams to see how we can ensure that the future of that particular alliance can continue,” he said.

Former Renault-Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn and Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche were often considered to be the glue holding the partnership together. The two held their last joint press briefing on the state of their partnership in October 2018. Weeks later Ghosn was arrested in Japan on charges of financial improprieties, and Zetsche retired the following May.

By that point, however, Daimler was already shifting its attention to other partners. After Chinese automotive group Zhejiang Geely took a surprise 10 percent stake in Daimler, Zetsche and incoming CEO Ola Kallenius sought to find areas of cooperation with its new shareholder. This culminated in a March 2019 deal to sell half of Smart to Geely and produce the car in China.

Daimler has also increased its cooperation with BMW beyond joint purchasing to include Level 3 autonomous driving and mobility services.

Analysts by that point believed Daimler had lost interest in Renault-Nissan, as Ghosn had left and the French-Japanese alliance appeared rudderless.

Positive dialogue
Last Wednesday as the alliance announced details of a strategy shift, Senard described the partnership with Daimler as “strong and it is getting stronger.” He said it was his “deep hope” that he would be able to make an announcement regarding it in the coming weeks.

On Friday Senard said: “So far the dialogue has been extremely positive, and Clotilde and I really hope that very quickly we will be able to announce how this can be made concrete in an even more substantial manner."

A spokesman for Daimler declined to comment specifically on Senard’s points.

“We have had a functioning partnership for 10 years now, and the atmosphere continues to be very positive,” he said.

In addition to the Smart/Twingo collaboration, key projects have included:

Production of the Mercedes Citan small van, a version of the Renault Kangoo, at Renault's factory in Maubeuge, France, since 2012.
A high-efficiency family of turbocharged direct-injection gasoline engines. They debuted in the Renault Scenic crossover and Megane hatchbacks in 2018, and are used in front-wheel-drive Mercedes models such as the A Class.
Mercedes has used Renault's 1.6-liter four-cylinder diesel engines coupled with Renault transmissions in the Vito front-wheel-drive medium van. A 1.5 liter diesel produced by Renault in Valladolid, Spain, has been used in entry-level versions of the Mercedes A- and B-Class models, as well as the CLA and GLA crossovers.
The Nissan Navara one-ton pickup was the basis for the Renault Alaskan and Mercedes X-Class, built in Nissan’s factory in Barcelona, which is slated to be closed. Mercedes said at the end of January it would cease selling the model, later booking restructuring charges of 828 million euros as a result.
Daimler architecture was used as a base for the Infiniti Q30 and QX30, both of which were built at Nissan's factory in Sunderland, England, starting in 2015. A jointly owned factory in Aguascalientes, Mexico, makes the Infiniti QX50 crossover and the Mercedes GLB SUV and A-Class sedan, but plans for a co-developed luxury compact car to be built there have been scrapped.

Daimler's Mercedes-Benz and U.S. tech company Nvidia said they will jointly develop a powerful new computing platform for vehicles capable of supporting everything from over-the-air software updates to driverless car technology.

The cooperation is the latest step by an established automaker to compete with Tesla, Google and Apple, which all aim to transform data generated during a vehicle’s operation into income by dominating the dashboard.

Mercedes will roll out the new electronics architecture based on Nvidia's Drive computing power across all its passenger car models starting in 2024.

"By downloading new functions and upgrades from the cloud, we want to continuously bring the system up to date, thereby increasing the value of the vehicle," Daimler CEO Ola Kallenius said on Tuesday in a joint statement with Nvidia.

Cars of the future need the latest in computer processing not just to crunch numbers for self-driving functions, but also understand human speech commands and interact with its environment. The added capabilities also open the door to new business models based on in-car purchases of goods and services.

“Together we aim to revolutionize ownership over the life cycle of a vehicle by allowing for its software to be continuously updateable over the air,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia.

Analysts say only software platforms that possess the last link to the driver will be able to profit in the future, sidelining hardware manufacturers including automakers if they do not control the customer relationship.

Autonomous vehicles are expected to offer automakers the best chance to turn data into revenue. The new-generation S-Class flagship sedan is expected to be the first Mercedes to be equipped with Level 3 autonomous driving for use on highways. The upper-premium model will be available to order in Europe from September with deliveries starting in November, German press reports have said.

In February 2019, Daimler announced plans under previous CEO Dieter Zetsche to cooperate with rival BMW to develop the second-generation of Level 3 self-driving technology. The two rival premium automakers last week said the cooperation is on hold because the timing was not right.

A source at Daimler said the BMW cooperation would have meant Mercedes would not be able to use the technology as quickly as it should be able to now with Nvidia.

The new Mercedes Level 2 and Level 3 systems will incorporate Nvidia’s Orin, a system-on-a-chip that contains 17 billion transistors, microscopic switches that are akin to neurons in a human brain.

Orin achieves nearly seven times the computing performance of the current Xavier, which Volvo Cars will integrate in its vehicles for use in driver assistance systems.

"Nvidia’s artificial intelligence computing architecture should help us further accelerate our path to autonomous driving," Kallenius said.

The Mercedes system will launch two years after Volkswagen Group’s new operating system. VW last week said its new car software unit established in January would move into operational mode starting next month, with its automotive cloud computing system developed with Microsoft nearly in place.

Daimler will seek to sell its factory in Hambach, France, as the automaker pursues deeper-than-expected restructuring to overcome the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic.

Daimler, which owns the Mercedes-Benz and Smart brands, had used the Hambach factory to produce electric and combustion-engined variants of its two-seater Smart vehicles, making more than 80,000 cars in 2017.

The move will result in a negative one-time effect of about 500 million euros ($562 million) in the second quarter, the company said in a news release on Friday.

"The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the economy are creating new framework conditions,” Daimler CEO Ola Kallenius said in the release. "In this context we are optimizing our global production network."

Production of the Smart will move to China from France after Daimler last year said it will build its next generation of Smart electric cars through a joint venture with Geely.

The move to sell the Hambach site comes as the auto industry faces overcapacity and plunging demand for new cars in Europe.

The plant opened 1997 and has about 1,600 employees. In 2018, Daimler said it would invest 500 million euros into Hambach to produce a compact electric car for Mercedes' new EQ electric subbrand alongside the battery-powered version of the Smart ForTwo.

Kallenius earlier this week warned he will have to pursue more painful restructuring because of the fallout from the coronavirus. He said he is planning "drastic" salary cuts on top of an existing plan, announced in November, that includes eliminating more than 10,000 positions.

B, Kl.A berlina a passo lungo e CLA shooting brake.

Daimler will need to cut more jobs than the 15,000 previously announced, the company’s head of human resources told German news agency DPA in an interview.

While he didn’t want to give an exact number of jobs that would need to be eliminated, Wilfried Porth said the figure was higher than 15,000, and was necessary for the Mercedes-Benz maker to avoid operational layoffs in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The willingness of the works council to grant really significant measures is unfortunately not particularly pronounced,” Porth said in the interview.

Daimler CEO Ola Kallenius warned last week that the company will have to widen cost cuts amid one of the biggest slumps in demand for cars and trucks ever. An original restructuring plan announced in November called for 10,000 jobs to be eliminated through 2022.

Daimler needs to negotiate the reductions with union and worker representatives who make up half of the members on the company’s supervisory board. The company had previously agreed to avoid operational layoffs until the end of the decade, but the plan leaves open the option to renegotiate in the case of severe economic changes.

Automakers globally have been pushing deep cost to survive the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, which shut down dealerships and factories and brought global car sales to a virtual halt. Though sales have started recovering slowly, predictions for the year see sales falling by double-digit percentages.

Daimler deve comunque tagliare in modo massiccio.

Truckchef Daum lässt in Europa so ziemlich jeden gehen, der will.

Defensive: Gesamtbetriebsratschef Michael Brecht

Offensive: Daimler-Personalchef Wilfried Porth

Siamo in ottime mani quindi. :vomito

Daimler reached an agreement to settle U.S. proceedings relating to investigations into software to cheat diesel emissions tests that will result in costs of about $1.5 billion, the German carmaker said Thursday.

The maker of Mercedes-Benz cars said it expects an impact on its free cash flow over the next three years as a result, with the main impact within the next 12 months.

"With the proposed settlements, the company takes an important step towards legal certainty with respect to various diesel proceedings in the United States," it said in a statement.

German carmakers, among the global leaders in diesel technology, have been caught in the crosshairs of courts and regulators after Volkswagen Group admitted in 2015 to using engine control devices to skirt diesel emission tests.

The scandal triggered a global backlash against diesel vehicles that so far has cost VW 30 billion euros ($35.45 billion) in fines, penalties, vehicle buyback costs and other settlements.

In January, Daimler warned it faced further charges of up to 1.5 billion euros related to diesel pollution.

On Thursday, the company said it has made sufficient provisions for the expected cost of the settlements.

It expects to pay about $700 million to settle a class action lawsuit, including the court's anticipated award of attorney's fees and costs. It also expects a mid three-digit-million amount in euros for the settlements.

Investors in Germany are also suing Daimler for $1 billion, accusing it of concealing the use of emissions cheating software. Daimler denies the allegations.
