UNICH -- Audi CEO Markus Duesmann will also head the Volkswagen Group subsidiary's research and development division, the company said Thursday.

Hans-Joachim Rothenpieler, 62, will step down as Audi's current board member for technical development. During his 34 years with VW Group he has also worked at the VW, Bentley and Skoda brands.

Duesmann, a mechanical engineer who was BMW's purchasing chief and became Audi CEO on April 1, will "realign the premium brand’s development division with a special focus on process quality," Audi said in the release.

He is tasked with injecting new meaning into the brand's advertising slogan Vorsprung Durch Technik (Advancement Through Technology).

Audi has had nearly a half dozen R&D chiefs in less than a decade. During that time Audi’s reputation as a technology pioneer suffered as its technology began to lag rivals.

New industry disrupters such as Tesla have overshadowed Audi and its German peers BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

Audi's role in VW Group's diesel emissions-rigging scandal also damaged its reputation. Audi engineers were accused of creating so-called "defeat" devices used to cheat diesel emissions tests.

Volkswagen Group is in talks to acquire French car-rental company Europcar Mobility Group in a deal that would allow the German automaker to better capitalize on its fleet, people familiar with the matter said.

The acquisition would come as Europcar struggles to cope with the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has weighed on travel around the world and sapped demand for car rentals.

It would represent a reversal for Volkswagen, which sold Europcar to investment firm Eurazeo in 2006.

Volkswagen has reached out to Europcar to express its interest in an acquisition and carry out due diligence, one of the people said Tuesday. The talks are preliminary and a deal is far from certain given the financial toll of the coronavirus outbreak on Europcar, the people added.

Europcar, which has market capitalization of 390 million euros ($441 million) and net debt as of the end of March of more than 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion), has also attracted interest from private equity firms, including Apollo Global Management, the sources added.

Volkswagen, Apollo and Eurazeo, which currently owns close to 30 percent of Europcar, declined to comment.

When Volkswagen divested Europcar in 2006, it said it could be a mobility services provider without owning a short-term vehicle hire company. A new deal for Europcar would allow Volkswagen to buy it back at a significant discount to the 3.32 billion euros ($3.6 billion) it sold it for 14 years ago.

Europcar is hoping to avoid the fate of U.S. peer Hertz Global Holdings, which filed for bankruptcy protection in May.

Last month, Europcar said it secured a 307 million euro ($347 million) financing package to manage through the coronavirus crisis, which included a 220 million euro ($249 million) loan guaranteed at 90 percent by the French state.

Volkswagen has decided against building a new multibrand plant in Turkey because collapsing car sales amid the coronavirus has left existing plants struggling to operate at full capacity.

VW had picked Manisa, 40 km (25 miles) northeast of Izmir on Turkey's western coast, for the plant.

It was scheduled to build the next-generation Passat its sister model, the Skoda Superb, starting in 2022, with a maximum annual production capacity of 300,000 vehicles.

The Turkish factory, which would be VW Group's 133rd worldwide, would only add to the automaker's excess capacity, sources told Automobilwoche, a sister publication of Automotive News Europe.

VW will now build the next generations of the the Passat and Superb at its plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, the sources said.

The VW Passat is currently built for European markets in Emden, Germany. VW plans to replace Passat prodcution in Emden with a new electric vehicle from its ID family of battery-powered cars. The Superb is produced in Skoda's factory in Kvasiny in the Czech Republic.

In October last year, VW put the Turkish plant on hold amid international criticism of the country's military operations in Syria.

VW said the decision to halt the factory was taken because the coronavirus has led to a collapse in demand.

The automaker started planning the factory when overall economic conditions, particularly in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, were positive. That is not the case now, the company said in a statement emailed to Automotive News Europe.

Volkswagen Group's series of executive shakeups is reaching its heavy-truck division Traton, with the surprise departure of the unit’s chief raising questions about its future strategy.

Andreas Renschler will leave VW’s management board effective July 15 and be replaced by Matthias Gruendler, the former chief financial officer of the Munich-based truck unit, according to a statement Tuesday.

Traton management board member Joachim Drees, who leads the MAN trucks business, also will leave his post, as will personnel chief Carsten Intra.

Intra will replace Thomas Sedran as head of VW’s light commercial vehicles division. Sedran, a key figure behind VW’s alliance with Ford Motor, will assume responsibility for asset management at the commercial vehicles and machinery operations.

VW group has made several management changes over the past weeks amid internal tension that has risen from costly efforts to electrify its lineup while also coping with the biggest industry slump in decades.

Tesla zoomed past the industrial giant in terms of market capitalization early this year and now has more than tripled VW’s valuation despite selling a fraction as many vehicles.

Executive overhaul
Former VW brand Chief Operating Officer Ralf Brandstaetter was promoted to the brand chief position last month after group Chief Executive Officer Herbert Diess lost direct control following a clash with key supervisory board members.

Personal mobility without electric cars? Hard to imagine this future. But – in spite of incentives – sales in Germany remain slow.

VW brand development chief Matthias Rabe moved to the British luxury-car marque Bentley and VW group purchasing chief Stefan Sommer abruptly left the manufacturer.

The new CEO of VW Group's Audi brand, Markus Duesmann, who took over at the group’s premium-car unit in April, plans to accelerate a restructuring push to restore profit margins.

VW pushed through an initial public offering of Traton last year after some back-and-forth that dragged on for months, but proceeds fell short of expectations.

Navistar implications
Traton also made a takeover offer for U.S. peer Navistar International earlier this year. VW officials have signaled the strategic logic for the deal remains intact but have sent mixed signals about when and under what conditions the deal might go ahead.

Navistar shares slumped following Traton’s announcement, falling 5.9% to close at $27.17 in New York trading. Navistar’s stock is still up 13% since Traton made its $2.9 billion offer in January.

“From a personal point of view there is no better point in time to leave and to hand over the business to a very experienced successor,” Renschler said in an internal letter to employees seen by Bloomberg. “With Matthias Gruendler, who some of you should know as our former CFO, as my successor I am sure that you will support him as much as you supported me.”

› Former CEO Bernhard Maier ends many years of successful work at ŠKODA AUTO
› Successor will be elected in accordance with Czech law and subsequently announced at the first Board meeting of ŠKODA AUTO a.s. in August 2020

Mladá Boleslav, 9 July 2020 – Bernhard Maier is stepping down as Chairman of the Board of Directors on 31 July 2020 after almost five years of leading ŠKODA AUTO.

Bernhard Maier began his professional career in 1984 at Nixdorf Computer AG. From 1988 to 2001, Maier held various management positions at BMW AG in Germany and abroad. Among other things, he was project manager for international brand strategy. In 2001, Maier took over as Chairman of the Board of Management of Porsche Deutschland GmbH, and in 2010 was appointed Board Member for Sales and Marketing at Dr. Ing. h. c. F. Porsche AG. In this role, Maier radically modernised the trade and sales organisation. Under his leadership, the international trade organisation expanded significantly, and worldwide customer deliveries tripled. In November 2015, Bernhard Maier was appointed Chairman of the Board of ŠKODA AUTO a.s. Key aspects of the company’s reorientation within the framework of Strategy 2025+ were the areas of electromobility, digitalisation and connectivity, new mobility services and the implementation of a broad-based product campaign for the brand. Under Maier’s leadership, ŠKODA introduced new, important models such as KODIAQ, KAROQ, KAMIQ and SCALA, developed the ENYAQ iV, the first model designed purely as an electric vehicle, increased sales to approx. 1.3 million vehicles per year and achieved record figures for sales and operating profit.

The Chairman of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Group and Chairman of the ŠKODA AUTO Supervisory Board Herbert Diess thanks Bernhard Maier for his outstanding performance in the Volkswagen Group, most recently for the ŠKODA brand: “Bernhard Maier is one of the most experienced automotive managers in the Volkswagen Group. In his role as Chairman of the Board of ŠKODA AUTO, he has made an extraordinary contribution to enhancing the brand’s profile. His years at ŠKODA are among the most successful in the company’s 125-year history. I would like to thank Bernhard Maier for this and almost two decades of particularly successful years, first at Porsche and then at ŠKODA”.

4) Joachim Drees, ceo di MAN Truck & bus.

Markus Duesmann takes charge of Car.Software organization at the Volkswagen Group
Audi CEO Markus Duesmann is taking charge of software in the VW Board of Management within the context of his responsibility for research and development
Bundling of software development in independent Car.Software organization
Up to 5,000 IT experts are to start work in the new Car.Software organization this year
New CEO of the Car.Software-Organisation is to be Dirk Hilgenberg, most recently Senior Vice President Manufacturing Engineering at the BMW Group Vehicle operating system
VW.OS, automotive data cloud and new electronic architecture for vehicle control units are to be available for the next electric cars and as of 2025 for all new models from the Group

Markus Duesmann, Audi-CEO
The central development of a software platform for the Volkswagen Group is picking up speed. As part of his Group-wide responsibility for research and development, the CEO of Audi, Markus Duesmann, has also taken charge of software. With its own operating system for all Volkswagen Group models, an automotive data cloud and a new electronics architecture, the cross-brand Car.Software organization set itself a tight schedule for the coming years in early July. Its new CEO is to be Dirk Hilgenberg, most recently Senior Vice President Manufacturing Engineering at the BMW Group. The organizational focus of the Car.Software organization is to be at the IN Campus high-tech hub in Ingolstadt.

“We are now starting the biggest revolution in the automotive industry. In a few years, a car’s operating system and its connectivity with a highly secure data cloud will make all the difference. This is why the strong positioning of the Car.Software organization as a cross-brand unit for software development at the Volkswagen Group is a key step into the future,” said Markus Duesmann. “Christian Senger has made a decisive contribution to establishing the Volkswagen Group’s strategic mission as a software-driven mobility company. Under his leadership, a powerful software unit has been created that can now enter the operating phase following its successful development. At the same time, the Group’s technological expertise has been significantly strengthened through technology partnerships, acquisitions and the recruitment of software specialists. I would like to thank Christian Senger for his pioneering work. With the upcoming handover to Dirk Hilgenberg, we will gain a CEO for the Car.Software organization who has extensive international experience in the integration of software products and technologies. In close cooperation with him, I will push this topic forward vigorously and at high speed.”

Full range of functions of the VW.OS in a lighthouse model from Audi

The full range of functions of the VW.OS operating system, for which the Car.Software organization is responsible, will be used for the first time in a lighthouse model from Audi that is to be developed in record time at “Artemis” – a new agile unit which, in close cooperation with the Car.Software organization, will facilitate the enormous acceleration of development processes.

Markus Duesmann: “The close cooperation with all brands and teams will be decisive for the success of the Car.Software organization. With my team at Audi, we are assuming a special responsibility as a premium brand. Because for many of our customers, premium is already defined today primarily through digital technologies that are perfectly tailored to their users. Our aim is for all brands in the Volkswagen Group to benefit from this pioneering role.”

Rapid progress with personnel expansion at the Car.Software organization

With the transition to the agile working mode on July 1, many specialists from the Group brands and companies were recruited to join the Car.Software organization. During the current transfer phase, more than 75 percent of the experts approached have so far decided to work at the new software unit. This personnel expansion will continue. By the end of the year, approximately 5,000 specialists could already be working together under the umbrella of the Car.Software organization.

As part of the personnel expansion in the Car.Software organization, the Digital Car & Services department of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand is likely to be reintegrated into the core brand, as all the persons currently employed there will transfer to the Car.Software organization or, at their own request, strengthen other departments in the company.

Car.Software organization with a software map for all digital products

The focus of the Car.Software organization is on developing common software for all brands and markets at the Group. This is primarily about the VW.OS automotive operating system and the connectivity with the Volkswagen automotive cloud. In addition, the Car.Software organization will consolidate the technological platform solutions for data-driven business models and innovations at the Group. Investments of more than seven billion euros are planned for these tasks by 2025. The Car.Software organization will bring together international expertise. It has its organizational base in Ingolstadt and, with its subsidiaries, has other sites in Germany including in Berlin, Stuttgart, Wolfsburg and, in the future, Munich. In addition, the Car.Software organization has locations in Europe, as well as in China, the United States, Israel and India.

For Christian Senger, until now Volkswagen Brand Board of Management Member for Digital Car & Services and CEO of the Car.Software organization, new highly responsible tasks within the Volkswagen Group are being examined. Senger has successfully shaped the organizational development of the Car.Software organization and has made significant progress with important partnerships and acquisitions.

Skoda has chosen Thomas Schaefer, formerly parent Volkswagen Group's head in South Africa, as its new boss.

Schaefer, who had been seen as a favorite for the Skoda leadership post, will replace Bernhard Maier, who left at the end of July after nearly five years in charge. Maier has been mentioned as a candidate to lead Porsche, where he had directed sales and marketing before becoming Skoda chairman.

Schaefer takes over immediately, Skoda said Monday in a release.

Schaefer, a mechanical engineer, started his automotive career with Daimler in 1991, holding management positions in production and quality in Germany, the U.S. and South Africa until 2002. He then worked for DaimlerChrysler in Malaysia until 2005, when he moved to Daimler in Germany, working in the emerging markets operations business field.

He moved to VW Group in 2012 and was named chairman and managing director of VW Group South Africa in 2015, responsible for group brands in the sub-Saharan Africa region.

Skoda said last Friday that it saw signs of recovery after first-half deliveries crashed 31 percent amid lockdowns. It said it had delivered 426,700 cars in January to June while sales revenue fell by a quarter to 7.55 billion euros ($8.95 billion) and operating profit sank 72 percent to 228 million euros.

Skoda is a bellwether for the Czech economy and is the country's biggest exporter with 1.24 million vehicles delivered in 2019.

he Skoda Citigo is officially no more, as the Czech maker focuses its efforts on larger models and electrification.

The future of the city car, which is a sibling of the Volkswagen Up and Seat Mii, has long been in question, but Skoda sales and marketing boss Alain Favey has now confirmed it will not return.

He said: “Citigo is gone - as far as Europe is concerned we are sold out. There will not be a replacement of the Citigo and we have no intention to have a car of this size in the future.”

The combustion-engined Citigo went off sale in late 2019 in the UK, but the model continued with the electric Citigo-e iV. The zero-emissions model went on sale in early spring, and the UK’s 400-unit allocation quickly sold out. Customer deliveries will be complete by the end of this year, said a Skoda UK spokesman.

A new, small electric car, which could potentially succeed the Citigo, is not currently on the table, said Favey. “If one day there is a version of the Volkswagen Group’s [electric] MEB platform which allows smaller cars to be produced [than now], we would have a Skoda version, but I don’t know about such plans. But as far as the Citigo is concerned, the game is over.”

Skoda this week revealed its first stand-alone EV, the Enyaq, built on VW’s MEB platform. Favey said that this model, alongside the existing Superb plug-in hybrid and upcoming Octavia plug-in hybrid, would allow the brand to capitalise on the growing demand for electrified models.

However, smaller Skoda models will not receive electrified versions for the foreseeable future, as the costly technology would make such cars unattainable for customers, Favey said.

Talking about the possibility of plug-in hybrid options, he commented: “It’s disputable if it’s a good idea to have a Scala PHEV. It’s a technology which is still extremely expensive - you need to find a customer base which has the buying power to afford that technology, or we have to lose money which is not an option for us.”

Favey also said that there were no solid plans for Skoda’s next EV following the Enyaq, and that Skoda was closely watching EV demand. He added that the flexibility of VW’s MEB platform meant that development times of future EVs could be much quicker than traditional combustion-engined cars

Cancellata la Citigo.

Volkswagen Group is in a position to overtake Tesla in both electric vehicle production figures and software development, the automaker’s labor chief, Bernd Osterloh, said in an interview with a German news outlet.

“If Tesla sets up three factories where 300,000 to 500,000 cars can be produced, then we are talking about a number of units between 900,000 and 1.5 million. We want to achieve the same in 2023, probably even earlier,” Osterloh, who is head of the automaker’s works council, told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper on Sunday.

VW’s modular electric-drive matrix platform, or MEB, gives the carmaker a “huge” advantage,” as it can build any vehicle of any brand on it, Osterloh said.
Osterloh also said he expected an engineering task force called Artemis, set up under under Audi CEO Markus Duesmann, to help the group catch up with Tesla’s technological edge. The new Car Software Organization, where all of VW’s software operations are bundled, is a step in this direction, Osterloh told the newspaper.

“Their advantage is that they already have their software in the cars and use it to collect data,” he said of Tesla. “But if we get our system into our cars, we will have much more data within a short time.”

VW said in 2018 that it would spend 44 billion euros ($52 billion) through 2023 as part of a push for now more than 50 full-electric models by 2025.

4-day work week ruled out
Osterloh also ruled out the possibility of a four-day week at VW plants to secure jobs despite a growing shift to electric cars that are easier to build and require fewer workers.

Germany's largest trade union, IG Metall, last month proposed negotiating for a transition to a four-day week across to help secure jobs, against the backdrop of economic fallout from the coronavirus crisis and structural shifts in the auto sector.

But Osterloh told Welt am Sonntag that VW's existing cost-cutting plan, which includes reducing the workforce by up to 7,000 through the early retirement of administrative staff members at its Wolfsburg headquarters, was enough to help it overcome the coronavirus crisis and other issues.

"At the moment we are not talking about less work," Osterloh said. "With the Golf we had the [production] levels of last year in June and July and introduced extra shifts," he added. "The four-day week is not an issue for us."

Demands by IG Metall, which represents 2.3 million employees in the metal working and electrical sectors, are potentially significant in Germany because they often set benchmarks for wage negotiations in those industries and beyond.

VW in 2016 set out a cost-reduction program called Future Pact, although the company has ruled out compulsory layoffs until 2025. Osterloh was quoted as saying in July that VW had no need for deeper cost cuts to counter the effects of COVID-19, which dealt a severe blow to car sales.

Bentley e Lamborghini potrebbero essere messere all’asta.
Per adesso a rischio sarebbero Man Energy solutions e Ducati.
