Daimler has entered discussions with its powerful German labor unions to convert key engine and transmission factories for the electric-vehicle era.

The plants in Berlin and Stuttgart’s Untertuerkheim district, adjacent to Daimler’s headquarters, are the focus of the Mercedes-Benz maker’s plans to revamp operations based on its expectation that demand for traditional combustion engines will decrease.

“Mercedes-Benz is firmly determined to transform its powertrain division consequently and gear it toward ‘electric first,’” Daimler said in an emailed statement Thursday, calling the talks with labor representatives “constructive.”

The world’s oldest car manufacturer retooling two sites that date back to the early 1900s highlights the historic nature of the industry’s shift toward battery-powered vehicles. It’s likely to involve some sacrifice. Local labor officials told workers earlier this week the company plans to cut 4,000 jobs by 2025 in Untertuerkheim, which employs about 18,500 people.

Daimler said it plans to improve its cost structure and become much more efficient but declined to comment on details. The company has a global workforce of almost 300,000 people and a labor pact in place that rules out forced layoffs in Germany until 2030. But about 20,000 jobs could be at risk worldwide as management deepens cost cuts first mapped out last year, people familiar with the matter said in July.

Untertuerkheim should retain a leading role within Daimler’s global factory network and expand its electric-mobility operations, the company said. The smaller Berlin plant will focus on electric and digital components.

Government incentives have boosted demand for plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicles this year in Europe, helping manufacturers meet stricter emissions limits. Their share of industry sales will rise to 14.7 percent next year, from less than 5 percent in 2019, according to analysts at UBS Group.

“The difficult environment arising from the global pandemic has led to one positive change -- now more than ever, consumers are shifting from petrol or diesel cars to lower-emissions vehicles, despite their relative expense,” Felipe Munoz, an analyst at auto-market researcher Jato Dynamics, said in a report.

Ci lasceranno Kl. B, CLA shooting brake, kl. A berlina, Kl.

C sarà a trazione anteriore, mi stupirebbe.

Daimler AG’s earnings snapped back last quarter, with recovering car sales and cost cuts giving the Mercedes-Benz maker the confidence to predict its momentum will last through the end of the year.

Earnings before interest and taxes surged to 3.07 billion euros ($3.6 billion) for the three months ended in September, Daimler said late Thursday. The preliminary operating profit exceeds the company’s result a year ago and far surpasses the 1.61 billion-euro average estimate among analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

Daimler Bounces Back
Mercedes maker's third-quarter earnings were better than a year ago

Source: Daimler statements
“The third quarter shows a very strong performance and provides further proof that we are on the right path to reducing the break-even of our company,” Chief Financial Officer Harald Wilhelm said in a statement. “We expect positive momentum to continue in the fourth quarter.”

Daimler coped with the biggest disruption to the auto industry in decades better than feared, though it did suffer a 1.68 billion-euro operating loss in the second quarter. Wilhelm told analysts on Oct. 6 that pricing and product mix held up well in the last three months and said the company will follow through with plans for a major restructuring aimed at reviving profit margins.

Industrial free cash flow was 5.14 billion euros in the third quarter, exceeding analysts’ consensus for 2.97 billion euros, according to Daimler. The Stuttgart, Germany-based company burned through 1.3 billion euros in the second quarter, when the pandemic forced the most widespread closing of factories since World War II.

The free cash flow beat is “a solid surprise,” Philippe Houchois, a Jefferies analyst with a buy rating on Daimler shares, wrote in a report.

Daimler’s bullish fourth-quarter outlook is predicated on there being no further lockdowns to contain the spread of Covid-19. Chancellor Angela Merkel’s top health official ruled out a second nationwide shutdown earlier Thursday even as he warned Germany risks losing control over the resurgent coronavirus. The country has joined the likes of France and the U.K. in setting records for new cases this week.

Chief Executive Officer Ola Kallenius said last week that Mercedes has not lived up to its potential to turn sales success into profit growth. He said during Daimler’s Oct. 6 capital markets day that the company will put less emphasis on volume and more on improving earnings in the midst of a costly shift to electric cars.

German auto maker Daimler will cooperate with China’s Geely to build its next generation of engines, the Handelsblatt business daily reported on Tuesday, citing company and industry sources.

Most of the engines will be made in China, Handelsblatt said. The alliance with Geely, which owns a 10% stake in Stuttgart-based Daimler, means that an existing partnership with Renault will expire. (Reporting by Douglas Busvine; editing by Thomas Seythal)

- Daimler and Geely on Friday said China could emerge as a manufacturing and export hub for hybrid powertrains jointly developed for Volvo and Mercedes-Benz cars.

Earlier this week, the German automaker said it will cooperate with China's Geely to build next-generation combustion engines for use in hybrid vehicles.

Geely owns a 9.69 percent stake in Daimler.

The engines will be produced in China as well as in Europe, and Geely and Daimler will cooperate in engineering, sourcing and production, Daimler said in a statement.

"The export of the engine from China is considered to be an option," the statement said.

Mercedes-Benz aims for more than half of its passenger car sales to be comprised of plug-in hybrids or full-electric vehicles by 2030.

An Conghui, president of Geely Holding Group and president and CEO of Geely Auto Group said: "This project reflects the need for economies of scale and targeted research and development investment in clean and highly efficient powertrains and hybrid drive systems and their applications.

Daimler will propose former BMW and Volkswagen Group CEO Bernd Pischetsrieder to lead its supervisory board.

Pischetsrieder, 72, will succeed long-term Chairman Manfred Bischoff after Daimler's annual meeting on March 31.

Pischetsrieder will become chairman as the Mercedes-Benz owner navigates through a seismic industry transformation. "Bernd Pischetsrieder is one of the most internationally recognized automotive experts," Bischoff said in a statement on Thursday. "His expertise and wealth of experience are of outstanding importance for Daimler."

EMAIL ADDRESS

Pischetsrieder's nomination comes after former Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche withdrew his candidacy for the job amid opposition from some shareholders unhappy about the automaker's results during his tenure.

Pischetsrieder began his career at BMW in his home city of Munich in 1973 as a production planning engineer. He was BMW CEO from 1993 to 2000. Under his leadership BMW bought Rover Group from British Aerospace in 1994. After failing to turn around the UK's biggest automaker, BMW sold Rover Group in 2000 to the Phoenix consortium.

Pischetsrieder was CEO of Volkswagen Group from 2002 to 2006 but was ousted after he lost a power struggle with then-Chairman Ferdinand Piech.

Pischetsrieder has been a member of Daimler's supervisory board since 2014.

In Germany, a supervisory board signs off on a company's strategy and major decisions. Operational decisions are carried out by a management board led by the CEO.

Daimler has embarked on a major overhaul under Zetsche's successor as CEO, Ola Kallenius.

The automaker is focused on reviving returns by concentrating more on bigger cars such as the flagship S-Class sedan and cutting thousands of jobs. Kallenius has also forged new cooperations with peers and technology firms and plans to boost the company’s software operations.

C sarà a trazione anteriore.

The British petrochemical giant Ineos has signed an agreement with Daimler to buy the German automaker’s factory in Hambach, France, where it will build the Grenadier 4x4 starting at the end of 2021.

Terms were not disclosed, but Daimler will contract with Ineos to produce the Smart ForTwo electric minicar at Hambach until 2024 as well as components for Mercedes-Benz models, the automaker said Tuesday in a news release. The deal had been in the works since this summer.

"Manufacturing at Hambach ensures that Ineos remains on track to meet its plans to deliver the Grenadier to customers in early 2022," Ineos said in a statement.

The agreement will preserve just over 1,300 jobs at the site, where about 800 people currently work in production and another 800 for suppliers and in other support positions.

Ineos is aiming for annual production of about 25,000 Grenadiers, a large SUV similar to the body-on-frame Land Rover Defender 110 that was discontinued in 2016. Ineos teams plan to start work at the site as early as January, Smart and union representatives told the French website Usine Nouvelle on Tuesday.

Ineos has drawn criticism that the Grenadier would not be built in the UK. It defended the decision on its Twitter account on Tuesday, saying that it had been "our intention" to build the vehicle in Britain, "but the business case for Hambach was overwhelming."

Unions at the factory approved the sale several weeks ago, despite concerns about the sustainability of building a large internal-combustion engine vehicle at a time when European emissions standards continue to tighten.

Ineos may turn to hydrogen power in the future, however, as it recently signed an agreement with Hyundai to “explore the use” of Hyundai’s fuel cell technology in Grenadier vehicles.

The Hambach factory, known as Smartville in France, was inaugurated in 1997 in a ceremony attended by President Jacques Chirac of France and Chancellor Helmut Kohl of Germany. Production reached a high of about 140,000 in 2008; in 2019 about 70,000 vehicles were built there, according to research company Inovev.

Daimler trims factory footprint
Daimler said this summer that it would seek a buyer for the factory as part of a plan to reduce its industrial footprint. The automaker said Tuesday that it had already recorded the effects of the sale in the second and third quarters. In the second quarter, Daimler booked impairment charges of around 500 million euros on the plant. "No significant effects are expected in the fourth quarter which will weigh on the earnings of Mercedes-Benz," the automaker said.

Markus Schaefer, a member of the Daimler board of management and COO of Mercedes-Benz, said in a statement Tuesday that the sale of the Hambach plant was an "important step" in making Daimler more efficient to allow for increased investments in new technologies.

"We are investing heavily in our electric offensive and comprehensive digitalization," he said. "In doing so, we must make the company even more efficient and, in this respect, the optimization of our global production network is a very decisive lever."

The Smart brand is facing an uncertain future in Europe after Daimler said last year that would build next-generation Smart vehicles through a joint venture with Geely in China. The four-seater Smart ForFour, a sibling model of the Renault Twingo, is built at Renault Group’s factory in Slovenia.

Ineos emerged as a potential buyer for the Hambach site this summer. It was also said to be looking at Nissan’s pickup factory in Barcelona and a site in Wales.

"Hambach presented us with a unique opportunity that we simply could not ignore: To buy a modern automotive manufacturing facility with a world-class workforce," Ineos Chairman Jim Ratcliffe said Tuesday in a statement.

Daimler had invested about 500 million euros to prepare the Hambach site to build larger electric vehicles for Mercedes-Benz such as the EQB crossover. Much of that work has already been completed, including a new body shop and a new paint shop.

1) EQA
2) EQB
3) EQS
4) EQE

MUNICH -- A year after Daimler and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group received regulatory approval to build Smart electric cars together in China, the brand has disclosed that its first new model will be an SUV.

The model, due next year, will be built on Geely's Sustainable Experience Architecture that will also underpin vehicles for Geely brands, Smart's boss, Daniel Lescow, told Automobilwoche, a German language sister publication of Automotive News Europe.

It will be used for at least one more Smart model, also likely to be an SUV, Lescow said.

Geely's scalable architecture, which runs from compact size upward, spells the likely end to the small city car image for which Smart is famous and the brand's repositioning to be more upmarket.

"Vehicle length alone is no longer a decisive factor for us ... we have redefined the requirements for Smart," Lescow said. "We want to radiate even more premium and not appear quite so playful," he said.

New features for the brand will also include new standards in connectivity, for example with online updates from the cloud and partially automated driving features.

Despite the move upmarket and inevitable price rise, Lescow says the new models will not cannibalize sales from Daimler's Mercedes-Benz compact range that includes the A-Class and GLA.

"We remain an accessible brand for our customers," he said, stressing the advantage of lower production costs in China on pricing.

Lescow said Smart would not be returning to the U.S. any time soon, a year after quitting the market there. Instead, Smart will concentrate on developing a digital sales system in Europe and China with existing partners.

In a post on LinkedIn, Lescow said Smart's focus will remain on urban mobility.

"The potential is vast, not only in Europe but also in China. SUVs are becoming the most popular of all passenger vehicles in China. But don’t worry, our new SUV won’t just be for China – we’ll be bringing it to European markets," Lescow wrote.

Daimler and Geely will build Smart-branded electric cars in the Chinese city of Xian in a factory with annual capacity of around 150,000 vehicles, starting in 2022.

The British petrochemical giant Ineos is buying the Daimler factory in Hambach, France, that builds the Smart For Two. Ineos will produce the Grenadier, its Land Rover Defender rival, at the plant starting at the end of this year. Ineos will continue to produce the Smart ForTwo for Daimler at Hambach until 2024.

Come cambiano i tempi.
