Daimler completed the financial year of 2020 in a challenging environment with a very strong fourth quarter, in particular with regard to Industrial Free Cash Flow. All divisions contributed to this success. Mercedes-Benz Cars and Vans exceeded key financial metrics of the financial year 2019.

Industrial Free Cash Flow, Daimler Group EBIT, Mercedes-Benz Cars & Vans Return on Sales adjusted and Daimler Mobility Return on Equity adjusted are all significantly above Daimler’s guidance or significantly above market expectations for the financial year 2020.

The Industrial Free Cash Flow in the fourth quarter reflects the continued extensive cost and cash preservation measures and strong operative performances across all divisions leading to favorable cash-conversion ratios.

“Our strategic initiatives and our intense operational efforts are combining to deliver a significant improvement in financial performance across the company. We have continued to keep a tight grip on cost and cash while on the commercial side we have seen strong demand for our products across all major markets and divisions. At Mercedes-Benz Cars & Vans, we were able to combine a rapid acceleration in xEV sales with a strong financial result in Q4. At Daimler Trucks, the recovery of the US-market has accelerated and we are beginning to see a positive impact from new efficiency measures in our European operations. We intend to continue to make further progress on cost-efficiencies in 2021 and will accelerate the implementation of our strategic initiatives,” stated Ola Källenius, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG.

The following stated figures for the FY 2020 are preliminary and unaudited:

Industrial Free Cash Flow: € 8,259 million (consensus: € 5,296 million);
Industrial Free Cash Flow adjusted: € 9,155 million (consensus: n/a)
Net Industrial Liquidity: € 17.9 billion (end of Q3 2020: € 13.1 billion)
Daimler Group EBIT: € 6,603 million (consensus: € 5,245 million);
EBIT adjusted: € 8,641 million (consensus: € 7,120 million)

Mercedes-Benz Cars & Vans EBIT: € 5,172 million (consensus: € 3,850 million);
EBIT adjusted: € 6,802 million (consensus: € 5,390 million);
Return on Sales (RoS) adjusted: 6.9% (consensus: 5.5%)
Daimler Trucks & Buses EBIT: € 525 million (consensus: € 556 million);
adjusted EBIT: € 678 million (consensus: € 689 million);
Return on Sales (RoS) adjusted: 2.0% (consensus: 2.0%)
Daimler Mobility EBIT: € 1,436 million (consensus: € 1,318 million);
adjusted EBIT: € 1,595 million (consensus: € 1,449 million);
Return on Equity (RoE) adjusted: 10.9% (consensus: n/a)
The preliminary results include the following adjustments affecting Daimler Group EBIT and Industrial Free Cash Flow:

Legal proceedings
affecting EBIT: € 164 million
affecting Industrial Free Cash Flow: € 595 million
Restructuring
affecting EBIT: € 1,874 million
affecting Industrial Free Cash Flow: € 301 million
Given the development of successful cost discipline continued in the fourth quarter and expected good underlying demand, Daimler also anticipates a positive business development in 2021. The current semiconductor shortages and COVID-19 disruptions will probably impact the first quarter 2021. Please note these statements are made under the assumption of no further COVID-19 lockdowns.

Daimler AG will publish further key figures of the financial year 2020 and the fourth quarter 2020 on February 18, 2021. Daimler will provide guidance for the financial year 2021 together with the full year results.

S e a breve arriveranno Kl.

Nissan Motor Co. sold its entire stake in Daimler AG for 1.15 billion euros ($1.4 billion), joining its partner Renault SA in generating funds for turnaround efforts.

Nissan sold about 16.4 million shares at 69.85 euros each, according to a statement on its website Wednesday. Renault shed its Daimler stake in March, bringing in 1.14 billion euros. Daimler shares closed at 72.41 euros on Tuesday.

Like Renault, Nissan is trying to restore profitability and overhaul its portfolio after the 2018 arrest of their long-time leader Carlos Ghosn threw the alliance into disarray. Projects the two companies started with Daimler just over a decade ago were among the endeavors showing signs of stress before Nissan insiders orchestrated the former chairman’s downfall almost three years ago.

Nissan said the proceeds from the Daimler stake sale will be used to “further strengthen and enhance its business competitiveness, including investments to promote electrification.”

The industrial partnership between Nissan and Daimler “remains unchanged and isn’t impacted by the sale,” the Yokohama, Japan-based automaker said in the statement. The two companies will continue to collaborate in several areas, it said.

Several of Ghosn and former Daimler Chairman Dieter Zetsche’s projects to jointly develop and produce vehicles turned into bruising experiences. Mercedes culled the X-Class pickup that was based on the Nissan Navara due to poor sales, and customers mocked the mediocre quality of the small Citan van that shared components with Renault. The collaboration the companies planned for a factory in Aguascalientes, Mexico, also didn’t pan out as initially planned.

Ghosn and Zetsche regularly hosted joint press conferences at car shows before Japanese police arrested the former in late 2018 on suspicion of financial misconduct. Zetsche stepped down from his roles at Daimler the following year.

Daimler still holds 9.17 million shares of Renault, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Daimler said early-year growth for its main Mercedes-Benz division will be wiped out by the global semiconductor shortage that the automaker expects to put a damper on the second half.

Mercedes car sales are now expected to be roughly flat this year rather than up significantly from 2020.

The lack of chips will have an adverse impact on the business as the year progresses and visibility on how supply will develop is low, Daimler said Wednesday in a statement.

"The entire industry is currently struggling with longer delivery times, which unfortunately also affect our customers," CEO Ola Kallenius said. "We are doing what we can to minimize the impact."

Chief Financial Officer Harald Wilhelm told investors that although the chip shortage would last into 2022, it would be less severe than this year.

Daimler also faces the challenge of high prices for steel, copper and aluminum in the second half.

Despite the chip shortage, Daimler's second-quarter revenue rose 44 percent to 43.5 billion euros ($51.2 billion). Earnings before interest and taxes increased to 5.19 billion euros, the company said, confirming preliminary numbers released last week.

Profit margin at the cars and vans division reached double digits for a third straight quarter.

Mercedes-Benz car sales in the second quarter rose 27 percent, with a 54 percent jump in Europe. After soaring in late 2020 and the first quarter, Mercedes sales in China, its largest market, gained just 5.8 percent in the second quarter.

Daimler had forecast in April that Mercedes will be more profitable than it has been in years, thanks to resurgent vehicle demand in the midst of the pandemic. At the time, the company raised its projection for annual return on sales for its cars and vans division to 10 percent to 12 percent, up from 8 percent to 10 percent.

The Stuttgart-based manufacturer said a plan to spin off its sprawling truck division is on track to be completed before the end of the year.

Mercedes will update investors on plans for battery technology and its growing lineup of electric vehicles on Thursday.

Mercedes this year revved up its EV rollout with the new EQS sedan, the battery-powered sibling to its flagship S-Class, as traditional automakers broaden their attack on Tesla. The company will be making eight full-electric cars on three continents next year. It flanked the EQS with the compact EQA and plans to unveil the electric version of its bestselling E-Class sedan later this year.

Production cuts

Daimler is among the major automakers that have had to cut back production this year because of the shortage spurred by the coronavirus pandemic.

BMW said on Tuesday nearly all its German plants were affected by the semiconductor shortages that are currently preventing the company from completing around 10,000 cars. Volkswagen and Stellantis have warned the issue may affect earnings later this year.

Facing limitations on just how many assembly lines they can keep running, automakers are prioritizing output of their biggest money makers and abstaining from discounts customers are accustomed to even from luxury brands

BERLIN -- Daimler's Mercedes-Benz will take a 33 percent stake in battery cell manufacturer Automotive Cells Company (ACC), becoming an equal shareholder alongside the project's original founders Stellantis and TotalEnergies.

The purpose of the partnership is to develop cells and battery modules and "help ensure that Europe remains at the heart of the auto industry -- even in an electric era," Daimler CEO Ola Kaellenius said in a statement on Friday.

ACC will supply Mercedes-Benz with battery technology from the middle of the decade, Daimler said.

Daimler will invest up to a billion euros ($1.2 billion) in the battery venture starting with a mid-three-digit-million cash investment next year, the company said.

ACC, which had previously planned for 48 Gigawatt hours (GWh) of capacity at two plants, now aims to reach at least 120 GWh by 2030, it said on Friday, a goal which will require seven billion euros in equity, debt and subsidies.

Daimler will hold two of six supervisory board seats for the battery maker. The companies will work together on battery technology development, including high silicon anode and solid-state batteries.

"Our focus is on Europe," Kallenius told a press conference. "That is where ACC wants to grow, expand, and develop technologies with us."

Daimler board member Markus Schaefer declined to specify what proportion of ACC's desired capacity would be allocated to Daimler, stating only that it was "absolutely significant."

Daimler’s move comes amid a flurry of activity and deals across the industry to ensure sufficient supply of batteries as demand takes off. In Europe, EVs accounted for 17 percent of sales during the first half.

Eight gigafactories

The luxury carmaker, whose previous CEO Dieter Zetsche deemed producing battery cells in-house too costly, has taken a strategic turn under Kallenius towards aiming for more control over its battery supply chain.

Daimler announced its goal in July of becoming 'all-electric' by 2030 if market conditions allow. The company plans eight gigafactories, including one in the U.S. and four in Europe with existing partners and one new unnamed partner, with a capacity of at least 200 GWh.

Though European carmakers assemble battery packs for electric cars, the manufacturing of battery cells -- the essential building blocks for batteries -- is dominated by Asian companies.

"Together with ACC, we will develop and efficiently produce battery cells and modules in Europe -- tailor-made to the specific Mercedes-Benz requirements," Kallenius said. "This new partnership allows us to secure supply, to take advantage of economies of scale."

ACC was launched in September 2020 as a joint venture between TotalEnergies and Stellantis, which owns the Peugeot, Citroen and Opel brands, as well as Fiat and Chrysler.

ACC already has ties to Germany: a 2 billion euro investment in a battery cell plant in Kaiserslautern, due to start production in 2025.

ACC's first factory, in Douvrin, northern France, is scheduled to start production in 2023.

ACC is planning on expanding its network in Europe, Daimler said.

Daimler's move follows the scaling down of its industrial partnership with the Renault-Nissan alliance. Renault and Nissan both sold their equity stakes in Daimler earlier this year to help finance their turnaround efforts.

Devono recuperare.

BAIC announced holding stake in Daimler of 9.98% since 2019
Daimler holds a 9.55% stake in BAIC’s Hong Kong listed unit BAIC Motor
Cross-shareholdings reflect commitment to continue joint success story in China
Daimler welcomes long-term strategic shareholders especially during its EV and digital transformation
Stuttgart (Germany) – Daimler AG’s long-term shareholder and partner in China, Beijing Automotive Group Co Ltd (BAIC), announced that it has been holding an increased stake in Daimler of 9.98 percent since 2019. This underlines the successful partnership to continue long-term success for Mercedes-Benz in China. Daimler owns a 9.55 percent stake in BAIC’s Hong Kong listed unit BAIC Motor as well as a stake of 2.46 percent in the Shanghai listed BAIC BluePark. According to an agreement between both parties, BAIC has confirmed to not further raise its stake in Daimler.

Ola Källenius, Chief Executive of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG:
“We welcome all long-term strategic shareholders who support our strategy. During our partnership with BAIC, China has emerged as the largest global market for Mercedes-Benz and as a key driver of the shift towards electric mobility and digitalization. BAIC’s shareholding is a reflection of their commitment to our joint successful manufacturing and development alliance in the world’s biggest car market.”

Daimler and BAIC’s partnership has been a role model for Sino-German cooperation for almost two decades. BAIC is the most important industrial partner for Mercedes-Benz in China. Jointly, both companies have made a significant contribution to the development of the Mercedes-Benz business in China.

Mercedes-Benz is committed to go “electric only” by 2030, wherever market conditions allow. China plays a major role in this strategy: By the end of 2021, there will be four Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles introduced to China: EQA, EQB, EQC and EQS. The EQA, EQB and EQC are locally produced and the localization of the EQE is planned for next year.

A mali estremi estremi rimedi.

Mercedes-Benz beats profit forecast, sees supply chain headwinds in 2022

BERLIN (Reuters) - Mercedes-Benz Cars & Vans expects an adjusted earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) of 14 billion euros ($15.9 billion) in 2021 and sees supply chain headwinds persisting into 2022, it said on Friday.

The luxury carmaker predicted an adjusted return on sales of 12.7% in the full year, beating its own guidance of 10%-12% as the jump in electric vehicle sales made up for supply chain troubles, it said as it released preliminary results.

But it expects high raw material prices and semiconductor shortages to prevent it meeting strong demand for its products this year, Chief Financial Officer Harald Wilhelm told a call with analysts.

The chip shortage would ease in the second half of 2022, he said, adding that a "good part" of raw material costs were locked in but unit sales would still need to increase to mitigate the hit from rising costs.

"There will be a (raw) material headwind, so I think we will need the volume lever to mitigate and fight it," Wilhelm said. "We will try and see what can still be done on top of 2021 in terms of the pricing but the pricing itself will not be enough."

Its share price rose to 75.08 euros by 1145 GMT, up from 69.01 euros when markets opened.

Data released by Mercedes-Benz in January showed the carmaker registered a 5% sales drop in 2021, losing its crown for the first time in five years to BMW as the premium carmaker with the most vehicles sold.

Chief Executive Ola Kaellenius has repeatedly said the aim was to boost profitability rather than focus exclusively on unit sales in its bid to raise the firm's stock market valuation after splitting from Daimler (OTC:DDAIF) Truck in December.

"Our good results are the outcome of highly sought-after products and the focus on profitable growth and cost discipline," Kaellenius said in a statement.

The fourth quarter saw an adjusted return on sales of 15%, the company said on Friday, with profitability boosted by "solid net pricing, good product mix and favourable used car performance."

Mercedes-Benz expects the deconsolidation from Daimler Truck to boost its EBIT by 9 to 10 billion euros.

Mercedes-Benz is due to report full-year results on Feb. 24.

Class sedan was marketed in the U.S. to bring new, and younger, customers to Mercedes.
Mercedes-Benz introduced the A-Class sedan in the U.S. in 2019, hoping to lure millennial buyers to the nearly century-old brand with a $30,000 entry-level model.

It was supposed to be a key gateway to the brand for younger buyers.

The A-Class "will do really, really well ... for us," then Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Dietmar Exler declared in 2018 ahead of the launch.

But waning consumer demand for cars and shifting corporate priorities are prompting Mercedes to ditch the compact sedan in the U.S. after the 2022 model year, the automaker said in a dealer memo obtained by Automotive News.

Despite hefty marketing, including a Super Bowl commercial, the A-Class struggled to find a solid footing in Mercedes' broad premium lineup and in a crossover-obsessed market.

"It launched as the market was continuing to shift to crossovers and SUVs," said Jeff Schuster, president of global forecasting at LMC Automotive. "From the start, it was fighting an uphill battle."

U.S. sales of the A-Class peaked at 17,641 when it launched in 2019. Mercedes delivered 8,108 units last year, down 47 percent from 2020.

The company declined to comment beyond the memo distributed to dealers.

Mercedes wants to quit chasing volume and move more upmarket, said Todd Bondy, operating partner at Mercedes-Benz of Oklahoma City.

"They want to focus on cars that are going to be profitable for the dealer and manufacturer," Bondy said. "The gross profit average was just never very good on the A-Class."

Entry model
The A-Class sedan is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four cylinder engine producing 188 hp and 221 pound-feet of torque. A more powerful AMG variant — the A35 — went on sale in 2020.

Despite the entry-level price, the A-Class launched with a new infotainment system and advanced driver assistance technologies to appeal to younger customers.

The A-Class introduced the Mercedes-Benz User Experience multimedia system featuring improved speech recognition capabilities, artificial intelligence and predictive learning abilities.

Mercedes had doubts about the viability of a small sedan in the U.S. from the start.

The automaker initially hesitated to bring the A-Class to the U.S. because of its small size. But the success of the CLA, introduced in 2013, showed that U.S. consumers would embrace a smaller sedan.

U.S. dealers have questioned the wisdom of having two compact sedans in a shrinking car market.

A sign Mercedes was evaluating the future of the A-Class in the U.S. came in 2020 when the automaker said it would move production of the sedan from Aguascalientes, Mexico, to Rastatt, Germany. Mercedes' focus at the Mexico assembly plant, known as COMPAS, is now the GLB crossover.

Product consolidation
The discontinuation of the A-Class comes as Mercedes looks to trim its bloated U.S. product portfolio. The brand's lineup has nearly doubled to 15 nameplates since 2000. Including engine variants and body styles, the lineup in the U.S. has ballooned to more than 100 versions.

"Model proliferation for Mercedes has gotten to be too much," Bondy said. "It's hard for dealers to stock everything."

In the memo to dealers, Mercedes said the GLA compact crossover will take over as Mercedes' entry-level model. The automaker also said the A-Class' larger sibling, the CLA sedan, will continue for the 2023 model year.

But Bondy does not expect the CLA to stick around in the U.S.

"People," he said, "do not buy sedans anymore."

A berlina negli States.

Secondo me è giusto così.
