The plans for Jaguar are more complex - and require a reversal of a long-term project to develop the next-generation all-electric XJ flagship limousine. That car was expected to make its debut this year, but has now been scrapped.

The statement said, “By the middle of the decade, Jaguar will have undergone a renaissance to emerge as a pure-electric luxury brand with a dramatically beautiful new portfolio of emotionally engaging designs and pioneering next-generation technologies. Jaguar will exist to make life extraordinary by creating dramatically beautiful automotive experiences that leave its customers feeling unique and rewarded.

“Although the nameplate may be retained, the planned Jaguar XJ replacement will not form part of the line-up, as the brand looks to realise its unique potential.”

Is Tata Motors preparing to sell its troubled Jaguar brand while keep its more successful sibling, Land Rover?

A number of question marks surrounding the presentation of JLR's future strategy suggest that might be the case.

JLR CEO Thierry Bollore plans to make Jaguar a full-electric brand by 2025. Its model range will be much reduced, with no plans to replace Jaguar's current SUVs like the F-Pace or its current sedans.

JLR will "completely reposition the Jaguar brand," Bolllore told reporters in an online conference on Feb. 15. "This is the renaissance of Jaguar," he said.

So complete will Jaguar's separation be from the Land Rover brand that future cars will use a separate electric platform. The reason is to give the two brands clear positioning, moving Jaguar well away from Land Rover’s core products, Bollore said.

"The SUV will be Land Rover," he said. "Jaguar will be different from the SUVs."

There could be another motivation: Tata and JLR may be splitting the two brands with a view to selling Jaguar. Building Jaguars on a separate platform from Land Rover would make the sale a lot easier in terms of intellectual property.

Under previous CEO Ralf Speth, JLR had intended for Jaguar to use the same electrified Modular Longitudinal Platform, or MLA, as Land Rover. The platform was supposed to debut last year with an electric XJ sedan designed by Ian Callum. But it was delayed during the COVID-19 pandemic Bollore said he has now axed the car.

The reason he gave was that the large sedan "was not fitting with the new positioning" of Jaguar as the epitome of modern luxury. It could also be that JLR could not conceive of selling Jaguar when its newest model was sitting on the platform that will underpin Land Rover’s core models for years to come, starting with the new Range Rover.

Jaguar's full-electric I-Pace SUV already sits on a bespoke platform, but the extruded aluminum structure is expensive and was not intended for expansion into other models.

Bollore spoke about an all-new platform, which will not be decided upon until JLR’s design team, led by Gerry McGovern, comes up with fresh designs.

"Everyone knows the proportions are massively important, and we will pair these great designs with a platform once we have the designs," Bollore said. The designs were "not far from ready," he said.

The cost of developing another EV platform alongside MLA and the newly announced EMA (Electric Modular Architecture) for smaller Land Rovers could be prohibitive, given JLR's recent commitment to cutting costs to become sustainably profitable.

Instead, JLR might prefer to buy in an EV platform from someone like Magna International, the supplier that already builds the I-Pace at its Magna Steyr contract manufacturing plant in Austria. JLR could do that and keep Jaguar, but it would also make selling the brand a lot easier.

Although Jaguar accounts for a small proportion of JLR's vehicle sales, there would probably be no shortage of buyers.

JLR sold 425,974 vehicles globally last year, it said on Jan. 11, up 24 percent on the year before. Of those sales, 323,480 were Land Rovers, up 18 percent, and 102,494 were Jaguar models, up 37 percent.

Brands with a rich heritage like Jaguar are still highly sought after, especially in China. For example, Geely bought UK niche sports-car maker Lotus in 2017.

A full-electric successor to the current Jaguar XJ sedan, shown, has been scrapped.

Valuable assets

Jaguar its still relevant. There might not be much interest in its sedans, but the I-Pace has helped to position Jaguar as an EV-forward brand.

JLR could include its Castle Bromwich plant in a sales. The factory currently makes Jaguar sedans but is unlikely to continue as a vehicle manufacturing plant in the future, Bollore said.

Both Ford Motor and JLR current owner Tata Motor have struggled to make Jaguar profitable but the brand could still be a valuable asset to sell.

Fleshing out Bollore’s vision of Jaguar as an icon of modern luxury – complete with its own EV platform and portfolio of designs -- could be the ideal prospectus to pitch to a new owner

Bollore's plan: Solve Jaguar's identity crisis
Smaller lineup, clearer differentiation part of JLR strategy for electric future

The battery-powered I-Pace crossover has been a hit-or-miss vehicle for Jaguar in different parts of the U.S.

Thierry Bollore, the former Renault CEO who took the wheel at Jaguar Land Rover in September, last week ripped the covers off his new global strategy. If his plan is successful, JLR will shrink and grow at the same time — and build a stronger identity for troubled Jaguar.

The shrinkage will come from fewer nameplates and lower volume for Jaguar. JLR is abandoning its goal of 1 million global sales per year, a strategy put in place by Bollore's predecessor, Ralf Speth, who stepped down last fall from the CEO role and now is nonexecutive vice chairman. The company also announced last week that it is shrinking its global salaried work force by 2,000 employees.

JLR's growth will come in efficiencies gained from producing its vehicles on fewer architectures and deriving more revenue per vehicle by selling connected services and from subscriptions. "As a business we will be focused on value creation, on delivering quality and profits over volume," Bolllore said as he laid out his "Reimagine" strategy aimed at steering JLR into the zero-emissions era.

Bollore: Jaguar, Land Rover to have unique architectures, personalities
JLR will build vehicles on three platforms, down from six today.

Here is the gist of Bollore's plan:

Land Rover: Two platforms will underpin the Defender, Discovery and Range Rover family of models. Both platforms, MLA and EMA, will be able to accommodate hybrids or full-electric vehicles. Bollore said Land Rover will offer six battery-electric SUVs by 2026, more electric off-road vehicles than any other automaker.
Jaguar: This is the last gasp for Jaguar as we know it. There will be no new vehicles added to its lineup until 2025. That is when it will morph into an EV-only brand with perhaps just two or three nameplates, all riding on a Jaguar-exclusive platform. The plan, according to one JLR insider, is to take the brand far upmarket, perhaps just shy of Bentley and Aston Martin pricing with gorgeous vehicles that sell at full price or close to it.
Jaguar's dedicated platform will help achieve a core goal of Bollore's plan: to end the overlap between today's Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles that share powertrains, architectures and technologies.

Said Bollore: "Built on separate architectures, Jaguar and Land Rover will have two clear, unique personalities, personalities rooted in their emotionally rich histories. Designed to give us two distinct choices of modern luxury for our customers."

He also said the electric XJ sedan, which was set to debut next year, has been canceled. In addition, Automotive News has learned that the J-Pace three-row utility will not be built.

While Jaguar will have a zero-emissions lineup, Land Rover's rugged off-road vehicles will continue to offer gasoline engines. By 2030, Land Rover aims to achieve 60 percent emissions-free vehicles. Bollore said JLR will phase out diesel engines by 2026. Bollore also said JLR will develop hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, part of a $3.4 billion yearly investment in future technologies.

Pillars: Design, quality
In Bollore's presentation, viewed by JLR employees, dealers and media, he said the company will take full advantage of the resources of Tata Group, the Indian multinational conglomerate that is JLR's parent company.

"As a proud member of that Tata ecosystem, with its industrial strength and worldwide standing, we have something truly unique at Jaguar Land Rover, truly unique in the automotive industry, and now is the time to realize its potential," Bollore said, citing Tata Group's expertise in energy, data, communications and software.

"We have all the ingredients to define what modern luxury means in the world of tomorrow."

McGovern: New designs crucial
Gerry McGovern, JLR's chief creative officer, is perhaps the one person who will face even more pressure than Bollore in executing the new strategy. Bollore is banking on McGovern, who oversees design for both brands, to create a new design language for Jaguar that rekindles the passion generated by such classics as the E-Type sports car, the XJ6 sedan and the original 1960s S-Type, one of the first true compact sports sedans.

For the unflappable McGovern, such a tough assignment is likely just another day at the office. His revamped Land Rover Defender has received wide acclaim, and his next pressure-filled debut, the fifth-generation Range Rover coming next year, has been given a thumbs-up by dealers who have previewed it.

Bollore seems eager to tackle a long-standing issue at JLR: vehicle quality. He mentioned the word at least five times in his presentation.

Future Jags a mystery
Bollore, in answering a reporter's question, said Jaguar would be moving away from SUVs. That has dealers wondering about Jaguar's 2025 EV lineup. Since sedans, wagons and sports cars aren't selling and Jaguar won't have SUVs and crossovers, what's left?

Jaguar Land Rover's North American boss, Joe Eberhardt, last week held a conference call with dealers who are wondering — and worrying — about Jaguar's future.

The battery-powered Jaguar I-Pace crossover has been a hit-or-miss vehicle. It does OK in regions such as California and Florida and a few East Coast cities but has virtually no demand at other many other stores.

The dealers received no specific details about Jaguar's 2025 lineup.

Two Jaguar dealers who spoke with Automotive News on condition of anonymity came away with different interpretations of Bollore's presentation. One believes the plan signals the end of the road for Jaguar — whose U.S. sales in pandemic-stricken 2020 were about a third of their peak of 61,204 in 2002 — while the other thinks the new direction will succeed.

Says JLR spokesman Stuart Schorr: "By the middle of the decade, Jaguar will have undergone a renaissance to emerge as a pure-electric luxury brand with a dramatically beautiful new portfolio of emotionally engaging designs and pioneering next-generation technologies.

"For Jaguar, we will now continue to work, including with our retailers, to fully prepare for that next generation of the brand, while we also go to market with the current new Jaguar lineup to 2025."

Farrar Vaughan, president of Jaguar Land Rover Bluff City in Memphis, Tenn., is cautiously optimistic. "I think with Gerry McGovern being in charge of the Jaguar brand, it's a really good thing, and we'll see something really outside the box, something really dramatic. That's what I hope.

Jaguar Land Rover will look outside the company to find a platform for new full-electric Jaguar models, CEO Thierry Bollore said.

The UK automaker plans to make its Jaguar brand all-electric starting in 2025, dropping combustion engines as the marque’s sedans and crossovers reach the end of their life cycles. Land Rover will get its first battery-powered vehicle in 2024 but will not be electric-only in the new future.

The plan includes giving Jaguar its own standalone electric platform, which would be expensive to produce in-house for a brand that is expected to remain low-volume, below even the 103,000 vehicles it sold worldwide last year.

Bollore said the automaker has started the process to find a company willing to partner with Jaguar on the architecture. “Naturally there is massive appetite to work with us,” he told financial analysts during an investor day on Friday.

The decision to work with a partner “was a matter of scale and speed to go to market,” Bollore said.

He said the company was talking “with a selection of actors,” without going into detail.

Automakers are increasingly looking outside their company for platforms to increase scale and reduce development costs. Ford Motor, for example, will use Volkswagen Group’s MEB electric-only platform to develop its first Europe-focused battery-powered car, due in 2023.

The choice of partner and platform will be partly dictated by the designs being drawn up by JLR’s head of design, Gerry McGovern. “It has to respect the proportion of the designs,” Bollore said.

McGovern is being given a high level of freedom to decide what type of car the new models will be, and the new architecture will have to fit in with this. “Great design begins with volume of proportions and clearly Jaguars will have quite significant different volumes of proportion compared to Land Rovers,” McGovern said on the investor call.

“Therefore, we need to look for opportunities out there in terms of architectures that we could utilize or refine to give the stunning jaw-dropping Jaguars I’m talking about,” he said.

Bollore said that if the company was unsuccessful in finding the right supplier, it was prepared to develop an architecture in-house. “It may be that we develop platform internally, but it has to be design led,” Bollore said. “There is no point doing what we are doing with Jaguar unless these products are drop dead gorgeous.”

McGovern said future Jaguar designs need to be “absolutely modern and contemporary.”

“They shouldn’t be retrospective at all and shouldn’t emulate anyone,” he said.

JLR has scrapped an all-electric Jaguar XJ that was being developed the company’s new MLA electrified architecture. That architecture will now be solely be used for Land Rovers, beginning with the new Range Rover that’s due to launch in the next 12-18 months.

Jaguar's new electric-only range of cars will start at about 100,000 pounds ($140,000), Jaguar Land Rover CEO Thierry Bollore told a British publication.

Jaguar Land Rover has been indicating that Jaguar will push further upmarket since the company announced its Reimagine turnaround plan in February, which includes the Jaguar brand dropping combustion engine cars starting in 2025.

This is the first clear indication the automaker has given on price of Jaguar's new all-electric range, which will start to roll out in 2025. The cars will embody "modern luxury," Jaguar says.

"Luxury starts not far from 100,000 pounds," Bollore told Auto Express magazine in an interview.

JLR confirmed Bollore's comments to Automotive News Europe.

Pitching its new cars at around 100,000 pounds would put Jaguar against rivals such as Bentley and Porsche, far above its current competition of BMW and Audi.

Bollore told Auto Express that the designs for the range of new electric Jaguars had been signed off.

He gave no further details of the cars. The magazine said the range will comprise of two crossovers and one sporty two-door model without giving a source for its information.

Bollore has said JLR will look outside the company for an electric platform suitable for Jaguar.

Jaguar will emulate the "unique" positioning of Range Rover to position its new models in the market, Bollore said in a separate interview with the UK's Autocar magazine.

"Look at Range Rover," Bollore told the magazine. "It's satisfactory on price and profit levels, and we haven't yet reached the ceiling. The price is extraordinary, and we have the volumes."

Bollore said that the Jaguar I-Pace full-electric crossover would be the brand's only current car to continue after 2025, but that it would be positioned differently to the new models.

Becoming 'original'
Bollore said it has been damaging to the Jaguar brand to try to compete with German premium brands BMW and Audi.

"Customers, they see the car, like the car and test the car, and they still go and buy an Audi or a BMW," Bollore said. "That's the problem. People buy the originals. We are not the originals. We have to get the positioning of Jaguar much different, higher and more original."

JLR head of design Gerry McGovern has previously spoken about the need to get Jaguar back to when it was "a copy of nothing," referencing the 1960s E-type sports car as an example.

Bollore, a former CEO of Renault and Carlos Ghosn's right-hand man, has dramatically changed the course of JLR since taking over from Ralf Speth last September. The company has said it no longer wants to chase Audi, BMW and Mercedes and has abandoned its goal of reaching 1 million sales annually.

Bollore wrote off 1 billion pounds of investment into the planned Modular Longitudinal Architecture electrified platform that had been designed to underpin the bulk of future Land Rover and Jaguar models.

Cars on the so-called "MLA low" and "MLA mid" architectures were canceled, including the long-heralded electric Jaguar XJ sedan, a lower-riding electric Land Rover called Road Rover by the UK motoring press and the Jaguar J-Pace SUV.

Jaguar is taking a break from introducing new products until 2025 and focusing all of its efforts on developing a new range of electric vehicles, reports France’s Le Monde.

The automaker’s “Reimagine” strategy, announced earlier this year, will see Jaguar go upmarket as it attempts to complete both a switch to electric and a segment shift. No longer satisfied with competing against the likes of Audi, BMW, and Mercedes, the British brand wants to enter Bentley territory.
Until then, Jaguar will reportedly lean entirely on its existing range of vehicles and will simplify engine and equipment offerings. With much of the range having been recently updated, it seems that it is hoping it can coast for the next three years.
Le Monde reports that no factories will be closed in that time, but the workforce may have to be shrunk. We have reached out to Jaguar for comment and will update this story when we receive a reply.
To be sure, Jaguar’s “Reimagine” strategy will be a dramatic one. Its new, all-electric lineup will consist of two crossovers and a two-door coupe. The least expensive vehicle offered will start at nearly £100,000 ($133,000 USD at current exchange rates) and all will offer “modern luxury.”
The strategy, being set by JLR’s new CEO Thierry Bollore, has already led to several dramatic decisions.
Since his arrival, Bollore already cut two mid-size crossovers planned for Jaguar and Land Rover, canceled the new XJ at the last minute, and JLR said it was looking to cut 2,000 jobs over the past year.
While Jaguar’s shift to electric vehicles and its move upmarket may seem sensible, it is in lockstep with the wider automotive industry. And that may mean more competition when its vehicles actually make it to market.

L'insuccesso credo stia tutto qua.
