Volkswagen Group's Seat unit gave a first glimpse of a small electric SUV that it aims to build for the VW, Audi and Skoda brands.

The EV would be aimed at urban buyers and would make electric cars affordable for the mass-market, Seat CEO Wayne Griffiths said during the brand's annual press conference on Monday.

The car would be about the same size as the Seat Arona small SUV and would cost between 20,000 euros and 25,000 euros ($24,000-$30,000), Griffiths said.

Seat released a sketch of the car that showed an SUV-inspired design.

Seat plans to build the car at its Martorell plant near Barcelona in Spain, starting in 2025, Griffiths said.

The automaker aims to make more than 500,000 urban EVs for itself and other VW Group brands, he said.

Griffiths said it will be the first car to use VW Group's MEB entry platform. Seat would build versions for the VW and Skoda brands, and possibly Audi, he said.

It comes as no surprise that the biggest setback for electric cars has been range anxiety and the 'inconvenience' of charging them.

Griffiths said no decision has been made yet on whether Seat will sell the car as a Seat or Cupra model.

VW Group CEO Herbert Diess said during the automaker's annual press conference on March 16 that the group will launch full-electric cars about the size of the VW Polo starting in 2025.

By that time, battery cell technology should be advanced enough for the cars to be sold at an attractive price for entry-level buyers, Diess said.

Diess earlier this month disclosed plans to turn the Cupra performance marque into a full-electric brand and make only battery-powered cars at the Martorell factory.

VW Group said on March 15 that it plans to have six battery cell production plants in Europe by 2030 to secure supply for its EV push.

The locations of two plants, in Germany and Sweden, have been announced. "Seat would like to be part of it," Griffiths said, adding that a plant would need to be located near Martorell or nearby in Barcelona.

Both VW Group and Seat executives have said that the plan depends on the approval of financial and other support from Spanish and EU authorities.

Seat already sells the Mii minicar, which switched to electric power from combustion engines in 2019. The company sold 7,364 units of the Mii last year, almost all electric versions, down 40 percent on the year before, figures from JATO Dynamics show.

The Cupra Born compact battery-powered hatchback will go on sale later this year. The Born shares the MEB platform with the VW ID3 and ID4, Skoda Enyaq and upcoming Audi Q4 e-tron.

Automakers are ramping up their plans to launch small EVs because they expect demand to boom in the coming years.

Renault plans to build a retro-styled affordable small electric car that revives the design of the Renault 5. Renault CEO Luca de Meo, the former head of Seat, said the sub-30,000-euro target price could be met by using cheaper lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathodes for the battery.

Small EVs currently on the market include the Renault Zoe, Fiat New 500, Honda e and full-electric versions of the Peugeot 208 and Opel Corsa. Renault also has two smaller EVs, the Twingo electric version and Dacia Spring.

Gov't support needed

Griffiths said a small EV was the key to Seat’s success in selling electric cars in its home country.

"If we want to build electric cars in Spain we need to sell electric cars in Spain," he said. "A big part of the market is small cars therefore we need an offer in that part of the market."

The success of Seat’s plan to produce of the small EV in Martorell however rested on Spain’s ability to persuade more people in the country to buy electric cars. "It's absolutely essential that the government makes electric mobility accessible with support,” Griffiths said.

Griffiths said Spain was at the “tail end” of other European countries with a 4.7 percent share of plug-in vehicles sold in Spain last year, compared to 13 percent for Germany, 11 percent for the UK and 10 percent for France. He said Spain should aim for 10 percent plug-in sales for 2021.

SEAT is planning to launch an all-electric “urban EV” in 2025, with a price tag between £17,000 and £22,000.

Talks on whether the new car will be branded a SEAT or a Cupra are ongoing, with company President Wayne Griffiths outlining at the brand’s annual results conference that a decision on this had not yet been made.

Griffiths did confirm that the new compact EV “will be the first car for an entry platform for different brands of the VW Group."

This likely refers to the MEB Entry architecture, an electric-only platform for more compact cars that will sit beneath the MEB-based Cupra Born and Tavascan models in the line-up.

Despite the admission that the new vehicle will be an EV focused on urban mobility, it may not be a conventional supermini. Griffiths highlighted that the car is a similar size to the SEAT Arona compact SUV, at around four metres long.

SEAT’s teaser image (below) revealed at the conference also shows a more SUV-like profile, with a slightly raised ride height, likely to accommodate the mounting of a battery in the car’s floor, as with the larger MEB platform. Our exclusive image (above) imagines this teaser sketch as a small SEAT electric SUV, a little smaller than the current crop of models in this segment, namely the Vauxhall Mokka-e and the Peugeot e-2008.

The new urban EV will be developed as part of SEAT’s plan to transform its Martorell production facility outside Barcelona, with the aim of building 500,000 electric vehicles per year.

SEAT urban EV
SEAT’s ambitious plans also include leading EV development for the entire VW Group, and the new urban EV will be a key part of this, because it has the potential to generate enormous sales volumes – and it needs to.

The tricky part for automotive brands is that EVs cost a lot to develop and build, but small cars have to be sold for comparatively low prices, so it can take a long time to earn back the money spent on development.

Coupled to slower sales for SEAT, especially last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the company’s future could ride on this new baby EV. It is not known yet when the Spanish organisation will make a decision on whether to badge its new urban electric car a SEAT or a Cupra, but given the intended entry price point of around £17,000 it’ll more than likely be a SEAT, as this brand is pitched as the more affordable offering compared with its sportier, more premium off-shoot, Cupra.

SEAT has once again been put in charge of leading the development of a compact EV for the Volkswagen Group, with a VW ID.1 small EV scheduled to make its debut in 2025 also.

SEAT and Cupra President Wayne Griffiths said: “We want to manufacture electric cars in Spain starting in 2025. Our ambition is to produce more than 500,000 urban electric cars per year in Martorell also for the Volkswagen Group, but we need a clear commitment by the European Commission.

“We’ve drawn up the plan, we have the right partners on-board and we’re generally ready to invest. This project is intended to become the driver for the transformation of the Spanish automotive industry. The support of the Spanish Government and the EU Commission for this cross-sectorial and nation-wide plan is needed for the Volkswagen Group to be able to take the final decision on its execution.”

The Volkswagen Group intends to make Spain a strategic pillar of its global electrification plans. As announced today at the New Auto Strategy Day, in which the company set out its roadmap to 2030, Volkswagen Group and SEAT S.A. are willing to cooperate with the Spanish Government to transform the country into a leading e-mobility hub and will apply to take part in the Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE).

As part of the Future: Fast Forward project, Volkswagen Group will make its best efforts to build a battery cell factory in Spain. After Sweden and Germany, Spain could become the third location for one of six gigafactories in Europe. Moreover, the planned Small BEV Family could be produced in Spain. The Small BEV Family will play a key role in democratizing electric mobility in Europe, as it will make climate-neutral e-mobility accessible for more customers.

Herbert Diess, CEO of Volkswagen Group: “Spain could become a strategic pillar of our electric strategy. We are willing to establish the entire value chain of e-mobility in the country – electric vehicle production, electric car components, a Group-new cell factory. Depending on the general framework and public support, from 2025 onwards the Small BEV Family could be made in Spain.”

Thomas Schmall, member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Group for Technology, CEO of Volkswagen Group Components and Chairman of the SEAT S.A. Board of Directors: “We are further pushing forward our battery strategy and we are willing to build up gigafactory number 3 in Spain. The localization would enable high security supply for the planned e-vehicle production in Spain. Like in our first two planned factories in Salzgitter and Skellefteå, we would intend to build up the potential gigafactory together with a strategic partner. In its final stage at the end of the decade, the plant could have a yearly capacity of 40 gigawatt hours.”

Wayne Griffiths, CEO of SEAT and CUPRA: “We support and will apply to take part in the PERTE announced by the Spanish Government. Realizing the potential of the Future: Fast Forward project demands both public support and investment. We aim to cooperate with the Spanish Government to transform the country into a European e-mobility hub and the SEAT S.A. production plant in Martorell into an all-electric vehicle factory. The Iberian Peninsula is key to achieving climate-neutral mobility in Europe by 2050. We are ready to transform the Spanish auto industry and make a significant contribution to the decarbonization of South Western Europe.”

Future: Fast Forward, leading the electrification of the automotive industry in Spain

Last March, at its 2021 Annual Press Conference, SEAT S.A. presented an ambitious plan, called Future: Fast Forward, intended to lead the electrification of the automotive industry in Spain, with the production of urban electric vehicles in Spain from 2025.

The urban electric car would be a large project in terms of potential volume. It would represent an important milestone on the road to sustainability and the fight against climate change and could become the engine for the transformation of the Spanish automotive industry. This segment, of around 20-25,000 euros, is essential to make electromobility accessible to the masses and hit the Green Deal targets.

Future: Fast Forward would serve as a driving force to generate employment, especially for young people. The project includes SEAT S.A. as well as technological centers and large, medium and small companies.

L'annuncio dovrebbe arrivare a settembre.

MUNICH -- Volkswagen Group's plans to sell small full-electric cars under its VW, Skoda and Seat brands are taking shape.

The group's first battery-powered small segment model is expected to be the Skoda Elroq, planned to go on sale in mid-2024.
It will be positioned below the Enyaq, Skoda's only battery-powered car on sale now.

VW brand is expected to add two battery-powered small EVs -- the ID1 crossover in 2025 and the ID2 small hatchback in 2027. These models will sit below the ID4 crossover and ID3 hatchback.

The Seat brand will launch the Acandra in early 2025. Company insiders say it will be a sporty-styled hatchback aimed at young buyers in cities and suburbs. A second body variant could follow.

All the small EVs are expected to start at 19,000 euros.

VW Group has given Skoda, which specializes in low-cost cars, responsibility for the development of the EVs. The cars or their successors are likely eventually replace the group's small cars including the VW Polo, Skoda Fabia and Seat Arona. The VW brand has said it will stop selling combustion engine cars in Europe by 2035.

Although Skoda is based in the Czech Republic, the small EVs will be built in Spain, with Seat's factory in Martorell near Barcelona and VW brand's Pamplona small-car plant as contenders, according to company sources.

The VW, Skoda and Seat cars will be based on a shortened version of VW Group's MEB electric-only architecture. The platform currently underpins the VW ID4, ID3, Skoda Enyaq, as well as the Audi Q4 e-tron and Cupra Born.

The cars will use the same battery packs as the current MEB models.

They will get a powerful operating system that will offer functions that have so far only been available in VW Group's upper mid-range cars. These include search services, payment services, charging assistance, and networking with the Internet of Things.

Currently no VW Group brand has a battery-powered model in the small-car segment. In the minicar segment, the group sells full-electric versions of the VW Up, Skoda Citigo and Seat Mii but these are being phased out.

The small-car segment is gradually becoming electric as automakers find it increasingly difficult to sell small combustion engine cars because of the cost of adding technology to meet the European Union's toughening emissions regulations.

PSA sells full-electric versions of the Peugeot 208 and Opel/Vauxhall Corsa small hatchbacks, the Opel/Vauxhall Corsa-e and Peugeot e-208.

Renault CEO Luca de Meo has said that by 2023 the automaker will launch an "affordable" small battery-powered car with a retro design inspired by the Renault 5.

Fiat last year launched the New 500 full-electric hatchback based on its 500 combustion engine car. The battery-powered Honda e was introduced in Europe last year.

:piangi2

Vw dovrebbe annunciare tutto entro fine anno.
Tendenzialmente Vw avrà solo Id in Europa. In Sud America e Cina sarà diverso.

HAMBURG, Germany -- Volkswagen Group will build its new range of small electric cars for the VW, Skoda and Cupra brands at two plants in Spain, VW brand CEO Thomas Schaefer said.

The ID2 small hatchback, which VW previewed last week with the debut of the ID2all concept car, will be built at sister brand Seat's Martorell plant alongside the Cupra Urban Rebel, Schaefer said on the sidelines of the concept's unveiling here.

Meanwhile, two small electric SUVs -- one for Skoda and one for VW -- will be made at VW's factory in Pamplona, where it currently builds the Polo.

VW's version will be called ID2X, Automotive News Europe sister publication Automobilwoche has reported.

All four small EV will be underpinned by VW Group's MEB Entry platform.

Schaefer said economies of scale and building the cars in Spain, where wages are relatively low, will help to keep costs down.

The graphic show the locations where VW Group will product EVs and batteries in Spain.
Huge boost for Spain

Making the four cars in Spain is part of VW Group's 10 billion euros ($10.6 billion) project in the country. A core component of the project, which includes Seat and nearly 50 partners, is a gigafactory in Valencia, Spain, that will be run by VW Group's battery company, PowerCo.

The 3 billion euro plant is scheduled to start cell production in 2026, VW Group said last Friday.

VW Group's investment is projected to provide a 21 billion euro boost for the Spanish economy by turning the country into a European hub for e-vehicle and battery production.

Spain is Europe's second-largest car producing nation behind Germany.

Less than 25,000 euros

The only model among the four that will cost less than 25,000 euros is the ID2, Schaefer added. The Cupra Urban Rebel will be pitched as a more sporty, upmarket model while the small electric SUVs are expected to command a higher price due to their body style.

In Europe, automaker typically get to charge more for SUVs, for instance, the VW Polo starts at 20,830 euros in Germany while the similar-sized T-Cross starts at 22,450 euros.

This rendering shows VW Group subsidiary PowerCo's planned gigafactory in Valencia, Spain. The factory is part of VW Group's 20 billion euro ($20.5 billion) investment into EV and battery production in Spain.
All four models will use batteries supplied by the VW Group's planned new cell plants, initially from Salzgitter and then from Valencia, Schaefer said.

The entry models will use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry, which is less expensive than lithium ion, while longer-range versions will use a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) chemistry, Schaefer said. Both will be supplied by VW. The long-range variants will drive up to 450 km (304 miles) between charges, VW has promised.

Europe's largest automaker is aiming for a fast ramp-up, with all four cars expected to reach the market within one and half years of the initial start of production in 2025, led by the Urban Rebel.

'High scaling effect'

"With the high scaling effect of those four cars, we will bring down the cost to less than 25,000 euros," VW brand production boss Christian Vollmer told Automotive News Europe.

The plan requires VW to stick closely to its battery production schedule. "Battery capacity will be the deciding factor in the ramp-up," Schaefer said.

One of the design goals for the ID 2all concept was to make the car's look more aligned to what longtime Volkswagen owners expect, with a focus on "likeability,” Schaefer told journalists at the event last Wednesday.

The ID2all has exposed wheel arches and a Golf-style C-pillar connected with the side panel.

The ID 2all bears a strong resemblance to the VW Polo and Golf, unlike the brand's first iteration of the small EV, the chunky VW Life concept that debuted in 2021.

VW's recent design changes to the ID3 electric compact hatchback have also sought to introduce more conventionality to the car, which had initially been designed to stand apart from combustion-engine models such as the Golf.

"We are turning electric cars into daily drivers," Schaefer said.

Euro 7 rules to lead to name change

The ID2 could be badged Polo, depending on whether the Euro 7 emissions regulations is signed into legislation in its current form.

"The question is: What will the Polo cost after Euro 7 [goes into effect]?" Schafer said.

If the rules on pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and particulate matter are as strict as proposed by lawmakers, then smaller combustion engine vehicles "will become prohibitively expensive,” Schaefer said

"It could mean another 3,000 euros in costs," he said, adding that calling the future small EV the Polo instead of the ID2 wasn't his preferred choice, "but I wouldn't categorically say, no."

Regardless of what name is chosen, the small EV will be available with the 2.0 version of software from VW's Cariad's unit, which will enable higher degrees of connectivity, Schaefer said.

The concept car boasted a 12.9-inch touchscreen, a digital driver display, a head-up display and VW's Travel Assist with semi-autonomous driving functions.

"MEB's scale effects let us inexpensively integrate technologies from higher classes into the ID 2all," Kai Grünitz, VW head of development, said in a statement.

Cupra previewed its version of the ID2 with the Urban Rebel concept in 2021.

The sporty looking hatchback is a "radical interpretation" of what the production car due in 2025 will look like, the brand said.

Skoda has so far only previewed its version of the car with sketch, saying it's one of three new electric models it will launch before 2026.
