BERLIN -- Opel will not split off its German factories from its operations, and production at its Eisenach plant will resume in January, Opel owner Stellantis and union IG Metall said on Wednesday, easing fears ovee the brand's future.

Stellantis also said that the Grandland SUV, which was temporarily produced in France when Eisenach was shut down in September will be made exclusively in the German factory from the new year.

German unions and politicians in the states have criticized Stellantis' communication on its plans for the two factories, in Ruesselsheim and Eisenach. They said it had not been made clear whether the plants would be legally split off from Opel and if Grandland production would return to Eisenach.

Stellantis had said in September that a split-off structure could be more efficient and flexible after German newspaper Handelsblatt reported this was under consideration.

IG Metall said in a statement on Wednesday that the works council and union representatives had agreed that such a split was "off the table."

Eisenach will become its own company within Opel Automobile GmbH, while Ruesselsheim's legal structure will remain as it is, the union added.

"The outsourcing and break-up of Opel was prevented and employment secured. I hope that management will steer the company more constructively and transparently into the future from now on," Joerg Koehlinger of IG Metall said.

Lancia will pursue profitability over volume to secure a long-term home in the 14 brand Stellantis stable and try to Mercedes-Benz to do so, its boss Luca Napolitano said.

Lancia has in recent years retreated from a past littered with world rally titles and iconic cars such as the Delta to a single model, the Ypsilon, in just one market, Italy.

Some analysts have regarded Lancia as one of the least strategic brands within Stellantis, which was formed this year by the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA Group.

However, Napolitano has presented a 10-year plan to Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares to relaunch Lancia, based on three new models: the new Ypsilon in 2024, both hybrid and battery electric, and a compact crossover expected in 2026 followed by a compact hatchback in 2028, both fully electric.

"Clearly volumes are important, but our targets are about profitability," Napolitano said in an interview on Friday.

Lancia, which alongside Alfa Romeo and DS was grouped in the pool of Stellantis brands cooperating in the premium market, needed to continue on this high-end path, he added.

"We still need to work and need to look at a benchmark ... which for us is Mercedes," Napolitano said. "I don't mean we want to fight against Mercedes, that would be naive, but that is an example of what we look at."

While Alfa Romeo and DS are global brands, Lancia's target is to move to Europe, initially targeting Germany and France, where electrification is moving faster, then adding countries including Spain, Belgium, Austria and the Nordics, he said.

"We initially target to make 25 percent to 30 percent of our sales abroad, to reach 50-50," he said. "Our aggressive electrification strategy and our focus on market segments which are very strong in Europe will help us."

Napolitano said that Lancia aimed to be the brand within Stellantis with the highest share of recycled materials. "We would like to build cars with a significant portion of recycled materials," he said.

Lancia's 10-year plan does not include going back to motor races and expanding outside Europe, as it needs credibility in the premium segment and to focus on priorities, Napolitano said.

"However, in the coming year, if things go well, why not trying to bring (Lancia models with) right-hand drive also in Japan, South Africa or Australia?" he said.

Lancia's expansion plan in Europe will be based on a light network of dealers, only in the largest urban areas, helping it to keep costs down and boost profitability.

Napolitano said the target was to have around 100 Lancia selling points in Europe in around 60 cities, which would be shared with other Stellantis brands, while pushing online to reduce the amount of time potential buyers spend at dealers.

"My target is to make it possible to buy a car with just three clicks," Napolitano said.

PARIS – Citroen, Peugeot and Opel will sell only full-electric versions of their compact and midsize passenger vans in Europe, dropping high-emissions internal-combustion versions as of January.

The decision was made to ensure the future viability of these models, CEOs for the Stellantis brands said in separate news releases Thursday.

The models are passenger versions of light-commercial vans, and business customers can continue to order internal-combustion drivetrains, as can buyers in most countries outside of the European Union and the UK (which share emissions rules), including Switzerland and the Balkans, the brands said.

Citroen said Thursday that the decision was made to ensure the future viability of the two models, and to make sure the Stellantis brand would be an active participant in the energy transition.

"Electrification is a particularly sensitive issue for the future of the MPV segments," Citroen said in a statement. "Their silhouette and their weight lead them to consume more fuel, as gas prices continue to rise."

"This situation will rapidly reduce the relevance of gasoline or diesel offerings for these models," the statement said. It will be somewhat harder for automakers to meet the EU's emissions rules in 2022, as the "super credit" for full-electric vehicle sales declines to 1.33 from 1.67 in 2021.

The affected models are the compact Citroen Berlingo, Opel Combo Life and Peugeot Rifter; and the midsize Citroen Jumpy Combi/SpaceTourer, Opel Vivaro/Zafira Life and Peugeot Expert/Traveller. New Stellantis partner Fiat, which will get a version of the midsize van called the Scudo, has not yet announced a similar policy.

The passenger vans were strong sellers in 2021. The Berlingo was the second best-selling compact car-derived van (built on passenger car platform), with 26,179 sales through November, according to JATO Dynamics, behind the Volkswagen Caddy (28,502 sales) and ahead of the Peugeot Rifter (22,490 sales). Opel recorded 12,929 sales of the Combo.

The Zafira recorded 9,338 sales through November, the Traveller 7,319 and the SpaceTourer 5,820.

However, just a small fragment of vans are sold with full-electric drivetrains.

Citroen CEO Vincent Cobee said the full-electric versions would be enough to attract buyers. "Without compromising on space or utility, which are the main reason to buy these models, we are confident in the capacity of the e-Berlingo and e-SpaceTourer to meet the many needs of our customers," he said in a statement.

Opel CEO Uwe Hochgeschurtz said moving to electric-only passenger vans was a key step toward Opel's goal of selling only full-electric vehicles in Europe by 2028.

The e-Berlingo, for example, has a range of 380 km, or 236 miles, and the e-SpaceTourer's range is 330 km, or 205 miles, with an optional 75 kilowatt-hour battery (a 50 kWh battery has 230 km range). The Opel and Peugeot vans have similar specifications.

Emissions for diesel versions of the Berlingo started at 113 grams per km of C02, with gasoline versions having emissions up to 160 g/km. SpaceTourer emissions ranged from 168 g/km to 194 g/km, only available in diesel version.

Price, however, could be an issue. The e-Berlingo, for example, starts at 35,300 euros in France, while the cheapest internal combustion version available in 2021 started at 23,150 euros.

Similarly, the least-expensive e-Jumpy/SpaceTourer starts at 48,450, while a base internal-combustion model in 2021 was 32,350. Government bonuses for electric vehicles will reduce those prices by thousands of euros.

At the high end of the range, the most-expensive e-Berlingo is 39,350 euros, exclusive of options and the top-level e-SpaceTourer trim starts at 70,950 euros, making it the most expensive passenger vehicle in Citroen's lineup. The compact vans are available in two lengths and the midsize in three.

The midsize Opel Zafira-e is available in three lengths with seating for up to nine passengers.
Beyond the Stellantis offerings, including a compact van it builds for Toyota, Renault offers the compact Kangoo Z.E., and a sibling EV model from Mercedes-Benz built in the same factory, the T-Class.

Volkswagen will reveal the ID Buzz, a retro-themed full-electric passenger van that recalls the classic Combi, on March 9.

Automakers have added comfort features to passenger versions of light-commercial vans in recent years, and they have taken sales from the minivan segments, which have slumped as buyers turn to SUVs and crossovers. Car-derived vans outsold minivans starting in the first half of 2020, according to data from JATO Dynamic.

Fiat seguirà a ruota a breve.

PARIS — Stellantis and Renault Group will focus on launching compact and midsize vehicles in 2022, with key models that include the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric, the Alfa Romeo Tonale and the Dacia Jogger.

Others include the Chinese-built Citroen C5X, the Maserati Grecale, the Renault Austral (replacing the slow-selling Kadjar) and a widely rumored coupe/crossover based on the compact Peugeot 308, which itself was renewed at the end of 2021.

Another potential reveal is a new Opel Insignia based on Stellantis rather than General Motors architecture, although it may not launch until 2023 or later.

One exception to the compact trend is a small Jeep, slotting below the Renegade, that would go into production in Poland in mid-year.

In recent years, the two groups focused on small cars, with new versions of mainstays such as the Renault Clio and Captur, the Dacia Sandero, the Peugeot 208 and 2008, and the Opel Corsa and Mokka.

But now they are turning to the higher-margin compact and midsize segments. The ongoing semiconductor shortage has only added to their importance, as automakers allocate chips to more-profitable vehicles.

Renault CEO Luca de Meo has made compact vehicles the centerpiece of his revival plan, as he seeks to shift the group’s revenue stream away from the current 70 percent that comes from small cars.

The Citroen C5 X, a midsize fastback with SUV styling cues, will be imported from China for European buyers.
Stellantis and Renault are also sidelining a number of once-popular nameplates and models.

In addition to the Kadjar, Renault is halting production of the Talisman sedan and has pared down the Espace minivan lineup to just two trim levels. It’s also unlikely that the Scenic and Grand Scenic minivans will continue past 2022, although de Meo has suggested the nameplate could live on. None of these vehicles has a hybrid drivetrain, meaning their emissions weigh on Renault's fleet average.

Dacia has revamped its lineup to eliminate the Dokker van (Renault will take over the group’s van activities) and Lodgy minivan, whose slot will be filled by the Jogger.

Stellantis’ two French minicars, the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108, will also exit, after the group handed over a joint venture factory at Kolin, Czech Republic, to Toyota. The Citroen C4 SpaceTourer minivan is also leaving the market. As with Renault’s models to be discontinued, they are also unhybridized.

Notably, after a flurry of full-electric vehicle launches in 2020-21 to meet new emissions requirements, the pace is expected to slow somewhat until 2025, the next step down in the EU’s CO2 targets.

Here’s what we know about Renault’s and Stellantis’ 2022 plans:

Renault Megane E-Tech Electric: This key compact model is only the brand’s second dedicated full-electric passenger car, after the Zoe (the Twingo EV is a derivative of the internal combustion model). It will launch in the first quarter of the year with two power levels and two battery capacities.

Renault Austral: The compact Kadjar SUV (a sibling to the Nissan Qashqai) has failed to keep pace with rivals in one of Europe’s largest segments, so Renault is retiring the nameplate in hopes of a fresh start. The Quashqai itself was overhauled in 2021, so Renault’s timetable to launch the Austral in 2022 seems feasible. It features a new, hybridized powertrain range.

Dacia Jogger: Renault’s budget brand is set to play a bigger role in the group’s fortunes, and Dacia hopes to again catch lightning in a bottle with the Jogger, a compact-sized seven-seat crossover based on an extended version of the group’s small-car platform.

Citroen C5X: An intriguing midsize fastback sedan with SUV cues that replaces a gap in Citroen’s lineup. It was shown last spring but won’t appear until spring 2022, imported from China. For non-European markets, Citroen will launch the New C3 small crossover; another potential international debut is a four-door sedan version of the compact Citroen C4 to replace the C-Elysee.

A concept version of the compact Alfa Romeo Tonale SUV, which is to be officially revealed in March.
Alfa Romeo Tonale: A long-delayed — an official reveal is now set for March — compact SUV that will complement the midsize Stelvio in the brand’s lineup. Alfa Romeo, now led by former Peugeot boss Jean-Philippe Imparato, is in recovery mode, and a successful Tonale launch would set the tone for his leadership.

Maserati Grecale: Another model hit by a delay, attributed to the semiconductor shortage, the Grecale will slot below the Levante and compete with the BMW X3 and Porsche Macan.

Peugeot 308 coupe crossover: This unconfirmed but widely reported model could be called the 4008. The surprisingly strong-selling Renault Arkana (imported from South Korea) has shown the mainstream viability of this body style, previously seen only on premium vehicles.

Small Jeep: This is expected to be built on the Stellantis CMP/e-CMP platform, but that architecture might need to be modified to accept four-wheel or all-wheel drive, a Jeep hallmark. It will be built at Tychy, Poland, by the second half of this year, ahead of small models from Fiat and Alfa Romeo expected in 2023.

Other rumored reveals include the next generation Opel Insignia midsize, based on Stellantis’ EMP2 platform, and the next-generation Peugeot 3008, already announced in full-electric form and set to start production in 2023. Renault is likely to show a concept or even pre-production version of the 4ever, a small electric crossover that would pair with the buzz-generating Renault 5 that is due by 2024.

One other thing to watch for in 2022 is the Stellantis future product plan, set to be revealed on March 1, which could shed more light on models from Fiat, Jeep, Lancia and Alfa-Romeo. Fiat and Lancia were starved of investment and new models in the final years of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles group, and Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares needs to broaden their lineups to reach the economies of scale and synergies promised to Stellantis investors.

E dovranno muoversi velocemente come noi».

«Sta andando molto, molto bene.

Alfa Romeo puts emphasis on quality, margins
Alfa Romeo boss Jean-Philippe Imparato outlines how brand's focus on quality, margin will help it match BMW on price, market position

LUCA CIFERRI

Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato with the Tonale
"Our pricing benchmark is BMW in every region," Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato said. "To me, pricing is not a selling tool, it's a lever to improve a brand's positioning. You can't build a premium brand if you are under pressure to reach high volumes."

Soon after he helped merge PSA Group and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles to create Stellantis last year, CEO Carlos Tavares gave longtime lieutenant Jean-Philippe Imparato one of the toughest tasks in the new group: fix Alfa Romeo. Imparato's previous five years were spent at Peugeot, which he turned into a cash cow for PSA. He has had an immediate impact at Alfa, putting the chronic money loser into position to make a “positive contribution” to Stellantis' profit and loss sheet in the first half of 2021. This was achieved by de-emphasizing volume and focusing instead on more profitable sales channels to improve transaction prices and margins. Alfa's goal is to match BMW on price in every market where the brands compete. When Imparato arrived, his aging lineup included just two models, the Giulia midsize sedan and Stelvio midsize crossover. Alfa's first new model in six years, the Tonale compact SUV, goes on sale in June. Imparato shared his expectations for the new model and outlined his long-term plans for Alfa during an interview with Automotive News Europe Associate Publisher & Editor Luca Ciferri and Correspondent Andrea Malan last month at the company's museum in Arese, near Milan.

When you led PSA's Peugeot your pricing benchmark was Volkswagen brand. Does Stellantis follows this same plan and, if so, which brand is Alfa's benchmark ?

Stellantis follows the same pattern. Our pricing benchmark is BMW in every region. To me, pricing is not a selling tool, it's a lever to improve a brand's positioning. You can't build a premium brand if you are under pressure to reach high volumes. I'm lucky to have a boss [Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares] who said, “I don't even speak about market share.” We focus on quality, margin per unit and pricing power. We want to be able to say we brought Alfa to the right level of technology, electrification, CO2 emissions while reaching an adequate profitability level. We must protect the reputation of the brand and of the Italian plants where Alfas are made. The factories in Cassino and Pomigliano can assemble cars at the right quality level.

MEET THE BOSS
NAME: Jean-Philippe Imparato
TITLE: Alfa Romeo CEO
AGE: 55
MAIN CHALLENGE: More than doubling the Italian brand's lineup in the next five years.
Did Alfa make money last year?

We had a positive contribution to Stellantis' P&L in the first half. As far as the full year is concerned, we will announce results later this month.

What were the key changes you made last year to improve Alfa's bottom line?

We worked hard to clean up the sales channels. We ended 2021 with an OEM stock [inventory owned by the automaker] of just 1,200 units globally. That is about one week of sales. I want to keep a low stock both at the OEM and dealer levels, that is the best way to keep pricing at a profitable level.

With the Tonale, Alfa is finally offering a model that can travel on battery power only, the 275-hp plug-in hybrid variant. While it will be the Tonale's most powerful version, why does it have 25 hp less than the Peugeot 3008, a sister model from the same company from a brand that lack Alfa sporty heritage?

We will compete everywhere. And I can tell you the driving pleasure of the Tonale is worthy of a premium car in its segment.

How many Tonale plug-in hybrids do you expect to sell?

It's really difficult to say at the moment. The launch cadence will be the 130-hp full-hybrid gasoline first, followed by the 160-hp version; then the 130-hp diesel and 275-hp plug-in hybrid, which is due in October. That means, the plug-in hybrid will hit the market in 2023, at which time I want it to have a very high share. Much will depend on the CO2 regulations in each European market. In countries with strict CO2 rules the Tonale plug-in hybrid version's share might reach 80 percent. Another key factor is the CO2 level we have to reach within Stellantis' EU-wide strategy.

Where will the Tonale diesel be sold?

Where we can sell it. In Italy, diesels accounted for 46 percent of the compact SUV market, but it's a dwindling share. In Europe excluding Italy, diesels have a 25 to 30 percent share. In France the powertrain will disappear in a couple of years. Diesels will probably disappear in Europe with the arrival of Euro 7 regulations [which could take effect as early as 2025]. We won't invest on diesels to comply with Euro 7.

When will U.S. customers start getting the Tonale?

We'll start deliveries before year-end. The U.S. version will have a specific powertrain: a 2.0-liter turbo gasoline engine with 256 hp with a nine-speed automatic transmission coupled with four-wheel drive.

What will follow the Tonale?

Our strategy is to have either a new model launch or a significant product event each year until 2030. That gives us the best balance of efficiency and cash inflow. Alfa needs stability. We can't change strategy to follow every new trend. Next year we'll hold a big event supporting the business. We'll launch [an SUV below the Tonale] in 2024. It will be Alfa's first full-electric vehicle, but it will also offer versions with combustion engines. [The small SUV, likely to be called the Brennero, was originally expected in 2023]. We'll launch our first electric-only vehicle in 2025. Starting that year all new models will be 100 percent electric, worldwide.

As a Stellantis brand, Alfa's product planning is set for the five years at a time. Is this a rolling plan or is there an overall review for all brands at a given point?

They are rolling. This year we'll approve the 2023-27 plan.

Alfa's five-year product plan calls for five new models. In addition to the Tonale and the small SUV, there will be the replacements of the Giulia and Stelvio that will be underpinned by the STLA Large architecture, meaning they will be electric. Which segment are you aiming to cover with the fifth product?

We'll target a segment that is popular worldwide.

Does that mean large sedan or SUV?

We haven't made our choice. You have to account for changing market trends. We see the high-end segments, D and E [midsize and large], growing everywhere. That could be interesting for us, especially in the U.S. It might be a cross between a sedan and SUV. The main question is: Do we want to compete outside of Europe? Our answer is, “Yes.” The work done by the previous team to re-launch Alfa in the U.S. has great value. We have to stay in the U.S. To achieve that goal, the next-generation Giulia and Stelvio must fulfill U.S. market expectations for infotainment and electrification.

How long will the 3.0-liter V-6 gasoline engine survive in Europe?

Three to four years, no more than that. Starting in 2027, we only plan to sell full-electric vehicles globally. That's our strategy is based on the current proposed legislation in Europe that would require a 60 to 70 percent CO2 reduction by 2030. As we can't afford to keep two separate product lines, we have to make a choice.

Which Stellantis platforms will Alfa use?

The small SUV that will be made in Tychy, Poland, will be on an evolution of PSA's CMP platform. The Giulia, Stelvio and other Alfa products will be on STLA Large, unless we decide to make a compact hatchback [to succeed the Giulietta]. We haven't decided on that yet because the product is planned for 2027-28. We also have to look at what level of battery range will be enabled by the technologies available at that time.

Could STLA Large-based models have rear-wheel-drive versions?

The platform allows for both RWD and AWD.

Will STLA Large have an 800-volt electric architecture?

The voltage architecture will enable the charging rate we need. I don't want customers to have to wait 50 minutes at a charging station.

Last year you said Alfa wants to reach a price level of plus or minus 1 percent compared with German premium brand within three to four years. Where do you stand now and how will you achieve your goal?

Pricing power is the main lever, along with the right channel mix and adequate product quality. In the past Alfa made mistakes, from offering zero-kilometer [self-registrations] cars to discounts to push sales to keep the Cassino factory running. I think that the best way to kill a brand is to say it is linked to a plant. We stopped that.

Was it easier than expected to reduce inventory in 2021 because of the chip shortage?

Actually, the chip shortage did not hit Alfa much, as both Stellantis and the markets where we compete protected us from the worst impact. I don't know how 2022 will pan out, but our target is a maximum of one-month stock in the dealer network with 80 percent of our cars being built to order.

Last spring, your Alfa team had 49 members, nearly 100 percent of them Italian, and 40 percent female. The entire team was working in a building with fewer square meters than the surface of a tennis court at the Stellantis styling center in Turin. What's the situation now?

At year-end we were 51 people, all working on the same tennis court-sized space. We are very frugal.

How often do you physically go to your office in Turin?

I am there Tuesday to Thursday. Last year I spent 100 percent of my time there, as I wanted to signal that Alfa was back and I wanted to foster a team spirit with lots of personal interaction. Starting this year, I'll be traveling more often to meet people in our network and show them our future products. On top of this, every month I fly to Amsterdam for a meeting of the Stellantis board of management.

Italy will give hundreds of millions of euros of support to a battery plant in southern Italy planned by Stellantis, the government's industry minister said.

"We are convinced that Stellantis should continue to be engaged in Italy and the gigafactory in Termoli which (Rome) will support with 369 million euros ($420 million) of public money demonstrates this," Giancarlo Giorgetti told daily newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore in an interview published on Thursday, without clarifying the overall investment expected for the plant.

Giorgetti also told the newspaper that Rome could approve as early as Friday a package of 1 billion euros ($1.1 billion) a year -- for at least three years -- aimed at financing incentives for the purchase of low-polluting cars and the conversion of production plants to EVs.

Stellantis declined to comment.

The automaker, formed in January from the merger of Fiat Chrysler and PSA, said its strategy would be supported by five battery plants in Europe and North America, and that one would be at its engine facility in Termoli.

The three-year plan includes incentives and financial support for converting industrial capacity toward more environmentally friendly models, Giorgetti said.

A deal between Rome and Stellantis has not yet been reached, but in an interview on Sunday Giorgetti said an agreement for the battery plant would be signed shortly.

Electrical Steel – Another Temporary Supply Chain Shortage Or A Threat To OEMs' Electrification Plans?
While major steel producers are investing millions to increase electrical steel production capacity, the rapid growth of the hybrid and electric vehicle segment could potentially cause material demand to outpace supply from 2025.

Stellantis, which runs about a dozen plants in Italy, has been hit particularly hard by the pandemic, with a knock-on effect for its network of suppliers.

Stellantis employs about 50,000 workers in Italy.

Although the new measures aim to nudge Italian auto production toward electric vehicles, Rome would still support production of some gasoline, diesel and hybrid cars.

"Helping only on the electric side would be doing a favor to foreign carmakers," Giorgetti said in the interview. "We also need to encourage purchases of cheaper vehicles by less wealthy people."

Italy has been seen as a laggard in EV production, as the government has lobbied the European Union to postpone deadlines for internal combustion phaseout plans in a bid to buoy high-performance automakers such as Ferrari and Lamborghini.

Europe's car industry is in the midst of its worst period for new registrations since the continent's industry association began tracking the market in the early 1990s.

Registrations in the EU, UK and EFTA markets fell 2.4 percent to 822,423 in January compared to last year, data from industry association ACEA showed on Thursday.
