TURIN -- Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares is preparing the automaker for a slower electrification ramp up after key elections in Europe and the U.S.

"There are two important elections next year -- the European Parliament elections in June and the U.S. elections in November. It could be that politics will be different then," Tavares said.

Stellantis may have to change its strategy "if political and public opinion tends toward fewer EVs," Tavares told Automotive News Europe sister publication Automobilwoche on the sidelines of a press conference at the Mirafiori plant in Turin.

He left open what consequences a reversal in CO2 regulation in Europe or the U.S. would have for Stellantis.

"One of my tasks is to prepare the company for new framework conditions. We have plans prepared for this."

A Stellantis spokesperson told Automotive News Europe that the automaker is sticking with its Dare Forward 2030 plan for 100 percent of its sales in Europe and 50 percent in the U.S. to be full-electric models.

The European Union will effectively ban new combustion engine cars from being sold after 2035 by allowing only zero emission vehicles to be sold after that date.

In the U.S. at least 10 other states that have adopted a rule set by California to phase out sales of new gasoline-fueled cars and light trucks by the 2035 model year.

In September, Britain's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he would push back a ban on sales of new combustion engine cars in the U.K. to 2035 from 2030.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who is likely to run against President Joe Biden in November, said Sunak's move was "smart."

Dichiarazioni piuttosto pesanti da parte di Tavares. Stellantis sta preparando piani qualora le elezioni in Europa e negli USA portino a cambi significativi nella politica ambientale. E’ possibile che la cavalcata verso l’elettrico possa essere rallentata. Le conseguenze sarebbero enormi e non credo che l’industria possa tirare il freno a mano d’emblèe, può modulare gli investimenti come hanno annunciato Ford e Gm ma molto di più no.
