LONDON — Nissan will drop a shift from the main Qashqai compact SUV production line at its factory in Sunderland, England, as part of its global cost-saving plan.

The line will move to a single shift, while a second line that builds the Qashqai, Juke small SUV and is due to add the upcoming replacement for the Leaf EV will continue with two shifts.

Affected workers on line one will move to line two, meaning the plant’s total workforce will be unaffected, a spokesperson for Nissan Sunderland told Automotive News Europe.

The changes will help Nissan “turn around its performance and create a leaner, more resilient business,” the company said in an emailed statement.

Nissan’s European operations are under close scrutiny after the region was the automaker’s worst performing business financially in the nine months to Dec. 31, with losses of ¥68 billion ($454 million), according to company figures.

Production at Sunderland fell 33 percent in the three months ending Dec. 31 to 61,000 vehicles, with nine-month production down 17 percent to 203,000 units.

Experience Reynolds with Swickard Auto Group

When looking to change their DMS, Swickard Auto Group knew that choosing who to partner with was a critical decision for their dealership. When deciding to switch 52 franchises to Reynolds, it was important for them to have a DMS provider that would enhance all parts of their business.

The factory last year stopped building the second-generation Leaf ahead of production of the new model, which Nissan has said will start before March 31, 2026. Nissan has previously announced it will spend £423 million ($545 million) on upgrading the Sunderland plant to produce up to 100,000 Leafs a year.

Battery packs will come from a new cell plant being built next door to the Nissan factory by supplier AESC, which is owned by China’s Envision.

The Sunderland factory will also start producing the Qashqai with the third generation of Nissan’s e-Power hybrid system starting this financial year, the automaker said.

Sunderland production has declined in recent years after hitting a peak of more than 500,000 in 2016, before falling to 325,458 last year.

Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida’s rescue plan for the struggling automaker includes closing three global plants, slashing 9,000 jobs globally, of which 6,500 will be on the manufacturing side, and reducing production capacity. The first factory to be shuttered will be Nissan’s factory in Thailand. Nissan has not named the other two factories to be closed.

Uchida is battling to keep his job following dismal earnings and the collapse of talks to combine Nissan with Honda. Nissan directors are gauging interest in potential candidates to replace Uchida, Bloomberg reported.

Nissan is due to announce a shake-up in its top ranks on March 12.

Uchida achieved mixed results under his first recovery plan, Nissan Next.

Uchida managed to lift Nissan’s operating profit margin to 4.5 percent by its finish on March 31, 2024. That missed the 5 percent goal. But at least it reversed the loss Nissan started with.

Nissan’s global sales slumped to 3.4 million vehicles in that final fiscal year. That was down sharply from the 4.9 million Nissan was selling at the start of the plan.

Uchida is battling back-to-back quarterly losses this year
Uchida unveiled his second business plan, a three-year road map called The Arc, in late March 2024. The focus of that plan was growth: He aimed to boost global sales by 1 million vehicles.

But in November, Nissan reported a net loss in the July-September quarter.

The deteriorating business forced Uchida to abandon The Arc and launch his second restructuring plan. He outlined plans to slash billions of dollars in costs, cut 9,000 jobs and trim global capacity 20 percent by March 31, 2027.

In February, however, Uchida reported another net loss for the October-December period and downgraded the full fiscal-year outlook to a net loss as well.

He said Nissan would shutter three factories in the next two years, cut shifts at U.S. plants, slash executive ranks by 20 percent and seek new partners to keep the Japanese carmaker going.

The search for partners only gained urgency following February’s collapse of merger talks with Honda. In December, Uchida and Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe announced plans to merge the companies by the summer of 2026. The marriage, which would also encompass Mitsubishi Motors Corp. in a three-way alliance, would have created the world’s No. 3 auto group by sales.

But Nissan’s board abruptly rejected a revised proposal from Honda that would have made Nissan a fully-owned subsidiary.

Under Uchida’s leadership, Nissan’s global sales slid 30 percent to 3.4 million vehicles in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024, from 4.9 million when he took over.

Nissan expects worldwide volume to hold steady at 3.4 million this fiscal year as its operating profit margin withers to 1 percent, from 4.5 percent the year before.

Nissan will launch three key full-electric models in Europe in the next two years, starting with the next-generation Micra, which will be sold only as an EV, later this year.

It will be followed by a new version of the compact Leaf, which moves to a crossover body style from a hatchback.

A new electric Juke SUV, on the same platform as the Leaf although smaller, will follow at some point between now and March 31, 2027, the company told journalists at an event in Atsugi, Japan.

Nissan showed the production versions of the Micra and Leaf after a long period of teasing the cars with concepts and detail shots of sections of the car. It also showed the silhouette of the Juke.

Nissan has previously committed to increasing its electric share to 40 percent of its total sales in Europe by March 2027.

In recent months, however, the company has been critical of the speed that manufacturers are being forced by legislation to shift to electric vehicles in the U.K. — its largest European market — and the EU.

Ally All Ears Podcast | Tips to consider when buying cyber insurance
In this episode of the Ally All Ears Podcast, Aaron Lee, Senior Director at Ally Dealership Insurance, discusses the growing threat of cyberattacks on dealerships and the importance of staying vigilant. He shares essential tips for safeguarding against these risks and highlights the need for specialized cyber insurance coverage to protect your business.
A recent analysis by JATO Dynamics found that through February this year, Nissan had a 9 percent share of EVs in 25 EU countries plus the U.K., Norway and Switzerland.

The Micra is based on the new Renault 5 and will be built by Renault Group’s EV unit, Ampere, at its plant in Douai, France.

The new model keeps the Micra name Nissan has traditionally attached to its small cars and will “remain true to the DNA of its predecessors,” Nissan said in a statement. Nissan halted sales of the combustion-powered Micra in 2023.

The new car was styled at Nissan Design Europe in London using Ampere’s AmpR Small platform. Like the Renault 5, it will be available with two battery options: 40- or 52-kilowatt-hours, providing a maximum range of more than 400 km (248 miles), Nissan said.

The next-generation Nissan Leaf ditches its hatchback design for a contemporary crossover look.
The third-generation Nissan Leaf ditches its hatchback design for a contemporary crossover look. (NISSAN)
Leaf moves to CMF-EV platform, becomes crossover

The Leaf will be built in Nissan’s Sunderland plant in northern England on the same CMF-EV platform as the Ariya midsize EV.

Nissan has been reliant on sales of the Ariya to reduce the brand’s overall emissions in Europe since production of the second-generation Leaf ended in 2024.

Nissan gave no new technical information for the Leaf, although previously the company said it will use a new battery from supplier AESC that is said to be 30 percent more energy dense than the 62-kWh pack in the previous-generation Leaf.

The Renault Scenic compact SUV on the same platform is quoted as traveling up to 610 km (379 miles) with its most powered battery pack, which is 87 kWh.

The Leaf is now a coupe-styled crossover in line with both customer tastes and the need to improve aerodynamics, Nissan said.

A low nose and sloping roofline help airflow hug the body, which ends in a high tail.

The car’s interior has been created as a “sanctuary,” Nissan design boss Alfonso Albaisa told Automotive News Europe sister publications Automotive News.

The dashboard is anchored by a glass slab that integrates the instrument cluster and central display.

A yellow small SUV
The current combustion-engine Nissan Juke received a face-lift in 2024. It will continue to be built alongside the full-electric version. (NISSAN)
Full-electric Juke to join Leaf at Sunderland factory

The Nissan Juke electric SUV, meanwhile, will be built on the same CMF-EV platform as the Leaf, according to a report from Autocar. The current ICE Juke received a face-lift last year.

Nissan confirmed in 2023 that the small EV would be manufactured in Sunderland alongside the Leaf and the two cars are likely to share a production line. The combustion-engine Juke will continue to be manufactured at the factory.

An electric Qashqai compact SUV — also planned for production at Sunderland and announced at the same as the Leaf — has been delayed, according to Autocar, quoting global chief planning head Francois Bailly.

Nissan used the Japanese event to announce a new electric crossover for the U.S. described as being slightly larger than the Qashqai. The model pays homage to the original Pathfinder that debuted in the U.S. in 1986, replicating its three-slot hood design with a light signature. No date was given, and Nissan did not say if it was related to the electric Qashqai planned for Europe.

Nissan has announced plans to introduce its third-generation e-Power hybrid system to the Qashqai built at Sunderland. Not date was given for its introduction. The drivetrain is also available in the larger X-Trail SUV.

Nissan has also announced a plug-in hybrid for the X-Trail in U.S., where it is known as the Rogue, but it has said that it will not launch PHEVs in Europe

La Micra ev only arriverà a fine anno.

Renault and Nissan updated their long-term alliance, paving the way for more share sales as the Japanese automaker remains under pressure to shore up its finances.

Renault and Nissan can now reduce their cross-ownership to no less than 10 percent, from 15 percent previously, Renault said on March 31.

Renault will take over the companies’ joint India venture, while Nissan will be released from an earlier commitment to invest in the French company’s electric-vehicle business Ampere. Nissan had pledged to invest €600 million ($648 million) in Ampere.

Ampere will develop and produce a Nissan-designed vehicle based on the Renault Twingo electric minicar.

Renault has been partially unwinding its alliance with Nissan amid mounting rivalries and mutual suspicion but still owns 36 percent in the Japanese automaker.

Renault “has a strong interest in seeing Nissan turn around its performance as quickly as possible,” CEO Luca de Meo said.

Renault buying Nissan’s 51 percent holding of the joint India business is meant to help the French company expand abroad, de Meo said. The transaction is subject to customary regulatory approvals and expected to be completed by the end of the first half.

Renault confirmed its forecast of free cash flow of at least €2 billion in 2025, despite an impact of approximately €200 million from acquiring Nissan’s stake in the India business.

Nissan’s new CEO Ivan Espinosa will take the helm on April 1 to replace Makoto Uchida after deteriorating results and a potential tie-up with rival Honda collapsed.

“Nissan is committed to preserving the value and benefits of our strategic partnership within the Alliance while implementing turnaround measures to enhance efficiencies,” Espinosa said in a statement.

Nissan, in which Renault is the largest shareholder with 17.05 percent of the capital held directly, has been plagued for years by declining sales.

It has struggled to recover from the downfall of former boss Carlos Ghosn, the architect of the Renault-Nissan alliance, who was accused by the Tokyo prosecutor’s office of financial misconduct, which he denies.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Nissan Motor Co. plans to cut about 20,000 jobs globally as part of a ramped-up restructuring campaign under new CEO Ivan Espinosa, Japanese media reported.

The new plan calls for more than 10,000 personnel cuts, in addition to some 9,000 already planned as part of the embattled Japanese carmaker’s revival plan, Japanese broadcaster NHK and the Nikkei business daily reported. The cuts will happen in Japan and overseas, they said.

Nissan spokesman Shiro Nagai declined to comment on the reports.

The news comes a day before Espinosa announces Nissan’s financial results for the fiscal year ended March 31. His company warned last month it would post a record net loss for the period, in the range of ¥700 billion to ¥750 billion ($4.7 billion-$5.1 billion).

Sign up for the Automotive News Retail Roundup newsletter, delivered every Tuesday, featuring the latest auto retail news including dealership technology, best practices, and online retailing.

Espinosa, who took the helm April 1 from Makoto Uchida, is the company’s youngest ever CEO and is tasked with turbocharging the rescue plan started by his successor.

Last autumn, Uchida launched a turnaround plan running through early 2027 after Japan’s No. 3 automaker sank to a net loss in the July-September quarter.

The overhaul was Uchida’s third restructuring plan since he took office in December 2019 in the wake of the arrest and ouster of former Chairman Carlos Ghosn.

That plan aims to achieve a cost structure that will enable it to achieve profitability even at a global volume of 3.5 million vehicles. That is about 150,000 more than Nissan sold in 2024.

To get there, Nissan is trying to cut global capacity by 20 percent to bring its global production capacity of 5 million vehicles more in line with its annual sales numbers.

It also targeted 9,000 jobs for elimination.

Last week, as part of the effort to speed reforms and conserve cash, Nissan said it was canceling plans to build a battery factory for electric vehicles on the southwestern island of Kyushu. That factory had been earmarked to manufacture lower-cost lithium iron phosphate batteries.

“Nissan is taking immediate turnaround actions and exploring all options to recover its performance,” Nissan said. “After careful consideration of investment efficiency, we have decided to cancel the construction.”

Nissan’s global sales have imploded in recent years. In the fiscal year ended March 31, 2017, the last full year before Ghosn’s arrest, Nissan deliveries rose 2.6 percent to 5.8 million vehicles.

The following year, Nissan’s sales dropped 4.4 percent. And its volume has fallen every year since, except for the 1.5 percent increase to 3.4 million in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2023

Nissan Motor Co., facing a huge loan repayment wall next year, is seeking to raise more than ¥1 trillion ($7 billion) from debt and asset sales to keep operations on track, according to internal documents seen by Bloomberg News.

The struggling Japanese automaker plans to issue as much as ¥630 billion in convertible securities and bonds, including high-yielding U.S. dollar and euro notes, the documents show.

Nissan also plans to take out a £1 billion ($1.4 billion) syndicated loan, guaranteed by U.K. Export Finance. Nissan operates Britain’s largest automaking hub, in Sunderland.

In addition, Nissan is seeking to sell part of the stakes it owns in Renault and battery maker AESC Group Ltd., as well as plants in South Africa and Mexico. Sale-and-lease-back plans for its Yokohama headquarters, plus properties it owns in the U.S., are also on the cards.

The aggressive and wide-ranging fundraising plans underscore Nissan’s rapidly deteriorating financial and operational position, despite efforts by newly appointed CEO Ivan Espinosa to turn the company around. Espinosa presented the options to the board earlier this month, people familiar with the matter said, with the goal of securing some funding within the quarter that will end June 30.

The funding proposal doesn’t appear to have been approved by Nissan’s board yet, leaving it unclear whether it will happen, the people said, declining to be identified discussing details that are private. The proposal is also slated to include the rollover of some debt.

Nissan’s cash is running out as Trump tariff hit looms

The funding urgency stems from internal forecasts predicting that Nissan’s car manufacturing operations will see excess cash dwindle to close to zero by the end of March 2026, the documents show. The projections are based on U.S. tariffs remaining in place and no further cash injections.

Nissan has sufficient capital of about ¥2.2 trillion in cash on hand and credit to last the next 12 to 18 months, Espinosa told Bloomberg TV earlier this month. “We have a solid footing in terms of liquidity,” he said.

Given the uncertainty over tariffs and the state of its business, Nissan didn’t issue a profit outlook for the current fiscal year, saying only it expects to post sales of ¥12.5 trillion. Along with its group firms, Nissan is facing around $5.6 billion of debt due next year, the most in Bloomberg-compiled data going back to 1996.

The internal documents viewed by Bloomberg also show that Nissan expects to see an operating loss of as much as ¥450 billion for the 12 months through March 2026 if higher tariffs remain in place. Without tariffs, the loss is forecast to be ¥300 billion. Either would mark the biggest operating deficit in the company’s history.

Nissan plans 20,000 job losses, plant closures

Espinosa announced plans earlier this month to eliminate 20,000 jobs and close seven of Nissan’s 17 plants by March 2028 after the company reported a ¥671 billion net loss for most recent fiscal year.

The measures follow the collapse of talks earlier this year to join forces with Honda Motor Co. Those discussions ended in part due to disagreements about Nissan’s willingness to make deeper cuts to production and personnel.

Nissan will close two factories in Japan, as well as locations in four other countries as part of its restructuring and cost cutting process, the Yomiuri newspaper and other news outlets have reported, citing unidentified sources. In Japan, the targeted facilities are in Oppama and Hiratsuka, near Yokohama, and represent about 30 percent of domestic production.

Various financial institutions have been lined up for the £1 billion in loans backed by U.K. Export Finance, which mainly supports British exporters. It will comprise one of the largest components of Nissan’s planned fundraising. In the past, the agency has helped to secure financing for high-speed rail construction in Turkey and infrastructure in Angola.

UK-U.S. tariff deal could offer reprieve

In Sunderland, Nissan has committed to boost electric vehicle production with a £2 billion investment. The British government has hailed the project as a vote of confidence in the country’s automotive industry after years of uncertainty following Brexit.

Earlier this month, AESC announced plans to push ahead with a second battery factory in Sunderland after getting financing support from U.K. Export Finance and the National Wealth Fund, as well as other investors. Formerly a Nissan affiliate, AESC is based in Japan and majority owned by Chinese interests.

The recent U.K.-U.S. trade deal could offer some reprieve to Nissan if it’s able to export cars from Sunderland, which has an annual capacity of 500,000 units, at a lower tariff rate.

President Donald Trump’s 25 percent tax on all vehicles imported into the U.S., which took effect in April, has cast a shadow over most global automakers. It would be costly for all of Japan’s export-heavy carmakers, and especially painful for Nissan given its precarious financial state.

Nissan has said it has ¥2.1 trillion in unused credit lines in addition to its own liquid reserves, but cash flow turned negative in its latest fiscal year and ratings agencies have cut the company’s creditworthiness status to junk.
