Seat boss confirms new SUV




IBX concept inspired crossover gets the green light from VW Group heads
Seat will put its first SUV into production by 2015 at the latest, company president James Muir has confirmed to Autocar.

The new SUV would be in the Volkswagen Tiguan and Nissan Qashqai class, and be previewed as a close-to-production concept at a European motor show “within the next two years”, according to Muir, and it would be on sale “within the next three years”.

The look of the new SUV is expected to be inspired by the IBX concept Seat revealed at the 2011 motor show. That concept, said Muir, was created “to show how our new design language would look on an SUV”.

But while the IBX was very much a concept car, Muir said the next Seat SUV concept would be “a production statement of intent that will inspire you that Seat can make such a car”.

“We will bring an SUV as quickly as we can,” said Muir. “After the concept in the next two years, it will be a short time before it comes to market.”

Muir said the SUV project had been “signed off in principle” by Volkswagen Group bosses, and “investment is already planned”.

He expects annual sales of around 100,000 units for the SUV. Seat’s total sales in 2011 were 353,000 units, although that figure should improve from 2013 with an expanded Leon range.

Muir believes an SUV “is a much better brand fit” for Seat than a four-door saloon, a comment that raises questions over whether the Exeo will be replaced in the future.

A smaller SUV based on the Mii and closely related to a production version of the VW Taigun concept is also on Muir’s “wish list”. “It’s on a white cloud at the moment, but it’s going to happen.”

Il ceo di Seat James Muir ha annunciato che la casa spagnola avvierà la produzione di un suv. Dovrebbe assomigliare alla concept Ibx mostrata nel 2011 anche se prima del lancio previsto entro 2 anni verrà mostrata un'altra concept che sarà più vicina alla produzione di serie. Muir fa intendere che grazie a questa suv seat non avrà più berline medie, quindi niente erde per la Exeo.

Lo sapevo che la Exeo non l'avrebbero più fatta. Anche se era un'Audi.

penso ne abbiano vendute 5 in tutto il mondo di cui 4 le ha prese la polizia italiana...

il discorso exeo era chiaro da subito. si rimarchia. se va bene avrà un'erede autonoma, se no muore. Stessa cosa fatta con la skoda superb, peccato con seat non abbia funzionato.

Che poi la Exeo è tutt'altro che male. Idem per la Superb, anche se a me, sta Octavia 2009 piace da impazzire...

il problema della exeo non è il prodotto, ma il marchio. nella galassia vw, la seat è il marchio con meno appeal, e lo sappiamo. d'altronde ha una gamma sgangherata fatta di rimarchiamenti di vw, skoda e audi, prima di un filone comune e di alcuna logica.

il modello chiave penso sia la leon. se funziona seat avrà un futuro, diversamente la vedo male per gli "spagnoli"...

cmq il suv si ispirererà a questo



che male non promette. target anno 100.000 pezzi.

bah secondo me visto che non hanno un minimo di mission aziendale, conviene che cavalchino le mode almeno. quando i C suv andavano, la altea ha venduto fino bene, forte di essere, secondo me, una delle proposte più belle in termini di stile.

a sto punto ciao sportività ed emozione, e che facciano sto suv C che tanto vende. Anche se sarebbe stato da presentare anni fa.

Primo muletto della suv Seat. Il ceo di Seat Muir e' appena stato sostituito quindi è' possibile che i piani cambino sotto il nuovo management. Per adesso la Tribù ( o come si chiamerà ) e' prevista per il 2015 e farà le veci anche di exeo e Altea.

MUNICH -- Volkswagen Group may build an SUV for Spanish sister brand Seat at Skoda's plant in Kvasiny, Czech Republic, company sources say.

The model would be produced alongside the next-generation Skoda Yeti compact SUV at the factory, where production costs are significantly lower than at Seat’s plant in Martorell, Spain.

Sales of SUVs and crossovers are booming in Europe, where Seat sells the majority of its cars, but unlike sister brands Skoda, VW and Audi, the Spanish carmaker lacks such a model.

VW Group hasn't approved the SUV for Seat because it is still investigating whether the money-losing subsidiary can afford to add the model.

Seat President Juergen Stackmann said the SUV would be an important strategic building block in the automaker’s product offensive in Europe.

Seat is working on an SUV that would "fit the brand and develop another European sub-segment" for the carmaker, Stackmann told Automotive News Europe's sister publication Automobilwoche.

He said no decision had been made yet on the SUV's production.

Seat’s sales are on the rise since it introduced the new Leon compact car range, which currently includes three- and five-door hatchbacks as well as a station wagon.

The Leon, Toledo compact and Mii minicar helped to boost Seat's sales by 10 percent to 242,487 in the first 10 months in EU and EFTA countries in a market that was down by 3 percent during the period, according to industry association ACEA.

According to media reports, a Seat SUV could incorporate styling elements seen in the Seat IBX concept that was unveiled at the 2011 Geneva auto show. If built, Seat's compact SUV would use VW Group’s MQB modular platform, which underpins models such as the Leon, Audi A3 and VW Golf.



L' annuncio della produzione del suv Seat si starebbe avvicinando, secondo fonti tedesche la versione di serie del concept IBX dovrebbe essere prodotta in Repubblica Ceca insieme alla Yeti a partire dal 2016.

Mi sa in una sorta di ripetizione di rapid-toledo, dove la versione skoda venderà tantissimo secondo me abbandonando del tutto la formula originale ma che non è piaciuta a tutti di "freelander dei poveri" con cenni da veicolo commerciale per adottare il solito rassicurante look da vw, mentre la versione seat non si capisce bene che senso abbia.

a me lo yeti (pre restyling) piace un botto, ma concordo che è una proposta più in stile kia soul che non di C/D suv da volumi, rassicurante e che piace a tutti.

di certo verranno sviluppate in coro tiguan/yeti e tribù. altrettanto certo che vw e skoda saranno diverse tra loro, molto meno chiaro se seat si dovrà accontentare del "solito" rimarchiamento. a oggi, sinceramente, non riesco a capire a cosa serva seat...

A quanto ho capito no, skoda sicuramente ( lo ha già annunciato) offrirà un' erede della Yeti sui 4,4 metri e un suv più grande sui 4,80 mt per Cina e Russia.
Seat dovrebbe abbandonare del tutto il segmento D e offrire un suv di segmento C distinto dai modelli Vw, Audi e Skoda.

Seat's long-mooted SUV is close to getting the green light for production, say company insiders.

The struggling Spanish car maker, which is the only unprofitable part of the Volkswagen Group, has made a number of attempts to get a compact SUV into the showroom, starting with the Tribu concept in 2007.

Not much is known about the new model, although Autocar understands that it won’t arrive until late 2015 or early 2016 and will be based on a new version of the MQB platform which is early in its development.

With the global market for compact SUVs now booming, this car is arguably one of the most effective ways for Seat to return to profit after years of losses.

The go-ahead for the new car fits in with the strategy of Seat boss Jürgen Stackmann. Last year he told Autocar that Seat was looking “to become a brand that is more than just the Ibiza” in order to reverse its fortunes. He said that he wanted to use the new Leon family, as well as expansion in new markets, to turn around the 2012 loss of £131 million on sales of 321,000 cars.

Seat is suffering, said Stackmann, because 80 per cent of its sales take place in the depressed European market and, as Spain’s number one brand, it is also suffering from the collapse in its home market. However, it does have an impressively youthful buyer base, with customers an average of ten years younger than Skoda buyers.

“I can’t predict when we will be back in the black, but I aim to make Seat into a solid company,” Stackmann said

FRANKFURT (Bloomberg) -- Volkswagen Group will add a compact SUV to its Seat division's lineup in 2016 to win new customers and accelerate a turnaround at VW's only unprofitable unit.

The new model marks Seat's entry into a growing market segment that represents sales of almost 1 million cars annually in Europe and has increased by more than 40 percent over the last five years, Seat said today in a statement.

The SUV will be designed and engineered in Spain and is expected to be based on VW's MQB platform that underpins the Seat Leon, along with other group models such as the Volkswagen Golf, Audi A3 and Skoda Octavia.

"This is an excellent piece of news, since it takes Seat into a new territory, in one of the largest and fastest growing segments in the world," Seat Chairman Juergen Stackmann said in a statement, adding that the SUV "is a major step forward on the road to reaching sustainable profitability for the company."

Seat did not say where the SUV will be built but Automotive News Europe sister publication Automobilwoche said VW Group has chosen Skoda's plant in Kvasiny in the Czech Republic as the production location. The SUV will be built alongside the next-generation Skoda Yeti SUV, it said in a report. Production costs in Kvasiny are significantly lower than those at Seat’s plant in Martorell, Spain.

Narrower losses

Seat has not been profitable since 2007 and expanding sales across Europe and in global markets is vital to restore the division’s earnings. Seat narrowed its loss to 152 million euros ($210 million) in 2013 from 156 million euros a year earlier as deliveries rose 11 percent to 355,000 cars, driven by demand in Germany and the UK.

Seat is weighing options to begin producing cars in China, the world’s largest car market, as the Spanish manufacturer expands outside Europe, Stackmann said in a March 5 interview at the Geneva auto show.


Seat's SUV likely will based on the IBX Concept unveiled at the 2011 Geneva auto show.

Seat started selling imported cars in China two years ago but high import duties and distribution problems hit sales. The brand sold just 1,100 cars in China last year.

Seat is also planning to add to its presence in countries including Mexico, Turkey and Algeria to reduce dependence on Europe, its main sales region.

Stackmann is betting on demand for the revamped compact Leon vehicle line to improve sales further in 2014 and establish the models as the nameplate’s second pillar, in addition to the smaller Ibiza. Seat added a Leon station wagon variant, dubbed the ST, at the end of 2013, and it will introduce a sporty Cupra version in the second quarter of this year.

Il gruppo Vw e' in forte ritardo nel segmento suv/crossover ma sta cercando di riprendersi la scena, entro pochi anni dovrebbero essere in commercio 6 suv col marchio Vw, 5 con il marchio Audi, 3 con il marchio Skoda, 1 per Seat, Bentley e Lamborghini.
