A slide in Tesla Inc. last week is capping off a round trip of epic proportions in the company’s shares.

Expectations that the electric-vehicle maker would benefit from CEO Elon Musk’s close relationship with President Donald Trump made its stock one of the top gainers following the Nov. 5 election. That bet, however, has been no match for growing anxiety about Tesla’s core business of selling cars.

Tesla’s shares slipped 0.3 percent to $262.67 on March 7, on track to erase their entire $700 billion post-election advance. The decline comes alongside a series of blows that have shaken investor confidence in recent weeks, from a January report showing that sales dropped for the first time in a decade last quarter to more recent evidence of Tesla losing its dominant position in Europe and China. Some investors have also grown worried that Musk’s foray into politics has become a distraction from his job as the EV-giant’s CEO.

“The bet on Tesla’s shares soaring due to Musk’s political involvement has not worked out thus far,” said Adam Sarhan, founder of 50 Park Investments. “Investors who initially anticipated massive benefits from Musk’s political involvement got too excited, and now cooler heads are prevailing.”

The broader market environment is also proving a headwind, with the speculative frenzy that pushed stocks to record highs following the election smothered by worries over U.S. trade policy and economic growth. The S&P 500 is down more than 7 percent from its high while the Nasdaq 100 has tumbled into a correction.

Bank of America analyst John Murphy last week slashed his price target on the stock to $380 from $490, noting concerns about new car sales, lack of news on a potential low-cost model and risk to the company’s robotaxi launch.

To be sure, the rapid decline in Tesla’s shares has pushed them into what chart-followers call an oversold zone, opening the way for a potential short-term bounce, according to some technical analysts. Catalysts could include signs that sales are ticking higher, an update from the company on its robotaxi, or a return of risk appetite to equity markets.

Still, any potential rally would also have to overcome investor unease over the company’s valuation: Tesla trades at 88 times forward earnings, compared with 21 for the S&P 500 Index.

“Tesla’s forward price-to-earnings ratio is still very close to 90,” said Matt Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak + Co. “So, the shares are still very expensive.”

Sicuramente ci sta una certa debolezza dei mercati, dovuta anche all’incertezza riguardo le tariffe. Tesla alla fine produce auto quindi è soggetta alle fasi del ciclo economico.
A preoccupare sono i dati di vendita che sono in fortissimo calo in tutti i mercati principali, solo negli Stati Uniti le perdite sono abbastanza contenute (i dati sono stimati perché Tesla pubblica trimestrali).
Alcuni analisti suggeriscono che l’attività politica di Mask sia nociva per le vendite, altri analisti puntano all’imminente restyling della Y.

Dall'altro lato sembra che la Model Y restyling in Cina ha raccolto circa 200.000 ordini.
Le dichiarazioni di Musk sui vari temi sono davvero fuori dagli schemi.

Tesla Inc.’s vehicle sales fell 13% in the first quarter, dragged down by the changeover of its most important model and international backlash against Elon Musk.

The automaker said Wednesday that it delivered 336,681 vehicles in the first three months of the year, the lowest since the second quarter of 2022. Analysts on average were expecting the company to sell more than 390,000 cars and trucks, based on estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

The figures speak to the extent of the disruptions to Tesla’s business early this year. The company retooled factories around the globe to make the redesigned Model Y, leading to lost output that’s common when carmakers transition from one vehicle generation to the next. The extraordinary factor was Musk’s involvement in global politics that sparked protests across the US and Europe.

Demonstrations have picked up in recent weeks in response to Musk asserting himself in Washington and beyond in support of far-right candidates and causes. The Tesla chief executive officer led President Donald Trump’s effort to shrink the federal workforce, weighed in on Germany’s federal election and called for the US to exit the transnational military alliance NATO.


Tesla shares dropped as much as 5.8% before the start of regular trading Wednesday in New York. Since hitting a record high in the weeks after Trump’s election victory, the stock had plunged 44% as of the close Tuesday.

Pochi giorni fa l'unione europea ha approvato lo spostamento delle multe di 3 anni, ciò si dovrebbe riflettere sulla quota di bev vendute ma solo dal terzo trimestre.

One of Wall Street’s most bearish Tesla Inc. analysts further reduced estimates for the company’s earnings, citing the magnitude of car-buyer backlash against Elon Musk.

Tesla’s first-quarter vehicle deliveries were far below even JPMorgan Chase & Co. analyst Ryan Brinkman’s pessimistic estimate, “confirming the unprecedented brand damage we had earlier feared,” he said in a report Friday.

The sales report “causes us to think that — if anything — we may have underestimated the degree of consumer reaction,” Brinkman wrote.

During the first three months of the year, Tesla delivered 336,681 vehicles, its worst quarterly total since 2022. In addition to changing over production lines at each of its assembly plants to build the redesigned Model Y, the automaker was contending with Musk, its chief executive officer, becoming a more polarizing figure due to his interventions in global politics.

JPMorgan now expects Tesla’s first-quarter earnings to slip to 36 cents a share, short of its previous projection of 40 cents and analysts’ average estimate of 46 cents.

Brinkman also trimmed his full-year projection to $2.30 a share. Analysts surveyed by Bloomberg are on average estimating the company will earn $2.70 per share — and Brinkman notes that this figure has dropped 17% since Tesla last reported quarterly earnings in late January.

Musk is expected to step back from his role leading the initiative known as the Department of Government Efficiency once his 130-day period as a temporary adviser to President Donald Trump has lapsed, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

But the billionaire will still wield significant influence over the federal cost-cutting effort and remain a Trump confidant after his formal departure, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Tesla CEO is a special government employee, a classification for temporary federal hires who are only supposed to work 130 days out of the year in their roles. A formal date hasn’t been set for Musk to leave, and the White House counsel’s office is in charge of determining when Musk has worked his 130 days, the people said.

After emerging as Trump’s biggest contributor in the US presidential election, Musk set his sights on Europe early this year, attacking more mainstream political figures and aligning with far-right parties and activists. That’s backfired for Tesla — sales plummeted 62% last quarter in Germany, home to the company’s only vehicle-assembly plant on the continent.

This exchange marks the highest profile disagreement between the President and Musk, the report said on April 7. It follows Trump’s unveiling of a 10 percent baseline tariff on all imports to the U.S. along with higher duties on dozens of other countries.


The White House and Musk did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.

Musk, a Trump adviser who has been working to eliminate wasteful U.S. public spending, called for zero tariffs between the U.S. and Europe during a virtual interaction at a congress in Florence of Italy’s right-wing, co-ruling League Party over the weekend.

Tesla has seen its quarterly sales drop sharply amid a backlash against Musk’s work with a new “Department of Government Efficiency.”

The company’s shares are trading at $233.29 as of its last close on April 7, down over 42 percent since the beginning of the year.

SAN FRANCISCO/NEW DELHI/SEOUL April 18 (Reuters) - Tesla's long-awaited plans for an affordable car include a U.S-made, stripped-down version of its best-selling electric SUV, the Model Y, but the production launch has been delayed, three sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.
Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab has promised affordable vehicles beginning in the first half of the year, providing a potential boost to flagging sales. Global production of the lower-cost Model Y, internally codenamed E41, is expected to begin in the United States, the sources said. That would occur at least a few months later than outlined in Tesla's public plan, they added, offering a range of revised targets from the third quarter to early next year.

The reason for the delay was not clear.
Two of the people said Tesla aimed to produce 250,000 of the cheaper Model Ys in the United States in 2026. The new vehicle is also planned for eventual production in China and Europe, Reuters has previously reported. The delay of U.S. production and the U.S. production target have not been previously reported.
Tesla reports results on Tuesday, and plans for the new vehicles are a major question.
The less expensive mass-market vehicles have been widely anticipated by Tesla fans and investors who hope they will attract a fresh group of customers and reverse the EV maker's falling sales and eroding market share. Tesla also has refreshed its original Model Y with exterior and interior changes. The Long Range All-Wheel Drive version in the United States costs about $49,000, before a $7,500 federal tax credit.

Reuters reported last month that the China launch of the E41 will occur in 2026. The E41 will be smaller and cost 20% less to produce than the refreshed Model Y, the sources familiar with China plans told Reuters. The timing of the rollout in Europe is not clear.
Tesla is also planning to launch a bare-bones version of its Model 3 compact sedan, three people said.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the delay of production of the cheaper Model Y, production targets and other details reported here.
The EV maker on Jan. 2 reported its first decline in annual deliveries last year, and analysts expect sales to fall again this year for several reasons, including damage to the brand reputation by Chief Executive Elon Musk's close work with U.S. President Donald Trump and support of far-right European politicians.

Another challenge for Tesla is that its vehicles are aging and there is no relatively cheap model.
Musk earlier promised a new, cheaper EV platform with cars expected to be priced as low as $25,000, but dropped that to prioritize robotaxi development.
Automakers are grappling with prospects of rising prices and supply-chain disruption, after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on vehicles and auto parts imported from outside the United States.
Tesla has increased North American sourcing for parts of many models over the last two years, which would decrease tariff exposure for the E41, two people aware of the matter said. It recently suspended plans to ship components from China to the United States for the Cybercab and Semi truck due to tariffs, one person told Reuters earlier this week.

Risultati molto negativi per Tesla nel primo trimestre 2025, i profitti netti sono crollati del 71%, eliminando i crediti per la CO2 che Tesla vende ai concorrenti la casa americana sarebbe in perdita. Anche gli investimenti sono stati tagliati del 50%.
Durante la presentazione Tesla ha ripetuto più volte che a causa delle nuove politiche tariffarie la situazione aziendale è diventata più complessa.
Tra i punti positivi sicuramente c’è da citare il fatto che i modelli cosiddetti low cost non subiranno ritardi (Reuters aveva riportato il contrario).
A partire da maggio Musk ritornerà alla guida dell’azienda.
